you Sir are correct you had the TH 350 and the TH 400 back then and now days you can get a Gear Vendors overdrive to make the TH 400 happy on the highway. The GV overdrive is pretty popular with the drag week folks so its been run under drag conditions and high HP. thumbs up on your comment

@georgealmeida7382 don't need hp got 1 in a 245hp 71 impala runs just fine 80 90 on the highway doesn't break a sweat hasn't Ben unbolted from the car ever
Awesome car! The TH400 or (turbo 400 for short) absorbs a little bit of power yet handles a robust amount of torque and some abuse with some mods. i am like to use the ford C4 behind a windy small block. The TH400 is a real tuff transmission when it's weaknesses are eliminated. Just add a gear vendors over under drive. The results are an insane overdrive transmission with stacked close ratio gear ratios without the problems of other overdrive transmissions. The ride is killer. Just check out this one 2nd gen on youtube it has a gear vendors unit and not much power compared to other internet builds, however the car responds immensely with the TH400 and a gear vendors unit and performs at a level higher than normal because it is always in peak powerband. Very thrilling to watch.
Perfectly fine. I daily drive 67 camaro...high h.p. BBC, t-400 with reverse manual valve body, trans brake, 4200 stall, dana 60 rear w/4.56 gears. Yes...im kinda pushing it with gears, but i dont scream down thruways. I love it, and the brake with that stall and gears is a blast to drive. Plus i have a 31x16.5 tire...(minitub), so it makes a hell of a launch at the track. Only thing i would suggest, would of course be a flywheel and case shield. Ive seen trannys blow before with a brake....and not a pretty site. I dont know how well there stock cases are...but dont want to find out what can happen. I want to keep my accelerator foot and leg. Dont know what id do without it. Although i am going to get g.v. overdrive so i can drive to further tracks no trailer. But t-400...yes..probly would never go any other route. Ive had them in probly 90% of vehicles, cars and trucks. Love 'em. John...keep screaming man...love the car and setup. You ever going to slip a Big Block in there...lol.
Of course you can daily drive a th400...I had it in my high school 70 Camaro! It was a 406 SBC with 64cc camel hump heads and a Holly 850, th400, and a 12 bolt rear end with first 3.73 and later 4.11 ratio final drive! True I didnt have a huge stall on mine, but it was very street able, and I don't think I ever overheated it! Oh and it also ran mid to high 11s all day!
If you had a GM truck or v-8 car from 1965 into the 1990's with a 3 speed automatic it was a turbo 350 or a turbo 400 (aka 3L80). You know, back before cell phones.
Bro you are nuts. No trans temp gauge...wow. I have one and glad i do. My trans got hot to 210 one time but cools down immediately once moving. I am add fan to cooler too
Blew up 4 C4's in my fuel injected 438Windsor 68 mustang. Now my tranny guy bldg a bulletproof th400. Said it will take 1200hp and i won't be dropping trans every year again. Take it from me and don't waste any money on a built c4 for anything over 400wheel. I don't give a shit what anyone says it wont last long in a radical street car. My last c4 had all the goodies and still got toasted after 500 miles of hard street driving. Fluid was burnt and clutches and bands shot and metal all over. 438Windsor only makes around 680hp, so nothing freaky. Plus its all motor. People will tell you they can build you badass c4 for hot street car but it won't last the long haul guaranteed. Unless of course you don't mind dropping trans every year...fck that. Do a th400 and be done with it. New copo camaro and cobra jet both run th400. My car weighs 3k lbs so i went th400 instead of glide. Glide is better in lighter and real high powered cars like 800-1k wheel.
i dont mean to be so offtopic but does anybody know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly forgot my login password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me
Pre 1982, most autos were 3 speed and no overdrive. I thought 4 speed auto on my corvette was heaven sent back in 84! But three speed auto was all business going to second gear in WOT only to be shift back to 1:1 ratio third the rest of the way.
My 75 stingray came stock with it 3 speed th400. I have read alot of great things about it! Handles a bunch of power, i want to throw a manual valve body in mine!
What the???? These go way back and was the absolute top of the line auto tranny from the 60's and on as I recall. People simply do not know enough these days...............I have one in a daily driver right now. Flawless.
How tall is your tire, and what gear ratio and stall speed? Why not a built 4L80E so that you don’t have to be at 3000+ rpms at 70mph? Yes it’s heavier and cost more, but it can hold the power. Electronic shift with a D3 transbrake and triple disk converter and you’ll be at much lower RPM at 70+ mph and better gas mileage no?
My main concern would be highway driving or any long trips with 60mph+ mostly. I need to do a rebuild on my 200-4r overdrive and for the money the TH series is way cheaper but idk if I can sacrifice highway capabilities
I know I’m very late, and hopefully what I’m about to say is still helpful to you or someone else, but you can get a aftermarket overdrive kit to gain some of that ability back.
Lol I just realized you’re driving around in angier. Im right next door with a 900 wheel manual hellcat. Looking to upgrade trans and clutch or do a th400 too
99% of the guys that say you can daily their race setup simply wont, and if they do it for a bit ,they get super tired of it fast and get themselves sometimes more dd friendly
Fun fact...a stock th400 will mainly shift it's self at like 4,500-5,000 rpms if you leave it in 1st...and it will shift to 2 and to 3...where a stock th350 will not shift if u don't shift it....this is if you have a stock th400...if it's got a shift kit it want do it...its called the shift governor...also a stock th400 out of a diesel shifts at 3500..i know some master trans builder will chime in so I'll let him explain the rest...dont believe do some reading
Back in the day I ran a turbo 350 with a shift kit in my 66 Chevy truck I restored and had to daily it for a few years.I had a Hurst "Star" shifter in the ole girl But yea back then that's all there was, a 350,400, or a manual.
why Not? when I started in the 80's that's what we had, ran big blocks 4500 stall and drove it daily (20 miles each way to work and back, plus cruising and of cousre doing what the car was built for)till I got another vehicle to drive daily
Obi-Wan Kenobi of course th400’s are built to be daily driven but it all changes when you’re running high hp, high stall and 4.10 rear gears, burnt my tranny last summer. That’s why people assume you can’t daily it but it all depends on your set up, only lunatics like me tries to daily a drag car.
Great video I also have fifth generation ZL one Camaro. Swapped out to a TH 400. It made 1000 rear wheel horsepower. With a circle D tort inverter. What did you do for the speed sensor because my computer thinks it doesn't have a transmission. I havewheel sensors that give me speed on the dashboard but my computer doesn't understand what's going on lol. Is there some type of module I can use for this car that I can plug into the sensors to send the signal back to the computer that has a transmission.
My 65 Buick Riviera had a turbo 400 it was my daily driver but I actually threw it in reverse going at seventy miles per hour. I was trying to put it in neutral and overshot the to reverse.
Manual shift TH400? No, it works like a normal auto because IT IS. Unless you put a reverse manual valve body in it like yours. I would much rather daily a TH400 or a Ford C6 3 speed auto than any of these new transmissions. The are far more reliable, and will take a lot more abuse than most people will admit. If you put a big cooler on it to keep it cool they will never die. But The 400 wasnt all there was. The 2 speed powerglide was a very popular transmission for rag racing for a long time. The TH350 and Ford C4s are also good transmissions. Or if you're into Mopar stuff the 727 tourqeflite was great.
I've been putting a turbo on my 02 Silverado for over a year now, things keep coming up so haven't been able to finish it lol but I know for sure that the 4l60 won't last at 600whp so I always had planned doing a 4l80e like everyone else but now I'm really considering a TH400 just to do something different. Tell me going to a TH400 is a good idea.
My 67 c10 327 has a th400. Runs great on highway with sidepipes droning nicely. Temp is dead on in middle of summer so don't worry you won't get it hot. Yours is more modern. Mine is 55 years old and STOCK they came with trans coolant lines
What gears are you running? Back in the day when TH400 was plentiful and came in most cars, they had high gear ratios and speed limit on the highway was only like 55 max. TH400 and deep gears at 80 MPH on the highway is a no go.
@@tylerbonser7686 because 3 speed + 4.10 gears + 26" tire at 80 MPH = 4350 RPM. That is a lot of RPM for a V8 motor, it will not like to continuously have that RPM on the highway for long periods of time.
@@CarportGarageDragRacing 4:10s are not a high gear ratio. You like many people confuse the difference between high and low ratios. Also you talk as though every vehicle came with those gears. The 2 vehicles that I've owned with a th400 ran around 3250 to 3500 at 70 or so mph.
@@tylerbonser7686 TH400/TH350/Powerglide ain't bad at all with say 2.73 gear. I have 3.55 in an 80 Trans Am and it ain't bad at all. BUT these days most people do these swaps for drag racing purposes. And most drag racing builds are going to want a numerically high gear, aka low gear ratio. And those gears and those transmissions do not mix well on the highway. That's all I'm saying.
@@CarportGarageDragRacing yes if the gears are change it wont be practical for the Street. But you were saying cars that came from the factory could only do 55 and that simply isn't true. That's all I'm saying. Also you said high gear ratio in your first statement but but eitherway when someone says high gear or high gear ratio it means the engine will run slower.
If you arent rodding it around town or just nice long cruise down the highway/interstate, is it still necessary to have a trans cooler? Or will it overheat even with just normal "not heavy foot" driving? And if a trans cooler is necessary, what do you recommend to prevent overheating issues?
A full manual valve body conversion is something else entirely. I think that's the point of the video, the title is a little misleading. My truck is an LS 6.0, 4L80e with a reverse pattern manual valve . Not for everyone.
Hi Jean, I'm a complete TH400 newbie but considering buying a Firebird Formula with a TH400 with a full manual reverse pattern valve body. How is it different than a non-manual?
daily drive a 66 grand prix tri power 389 with a factory 400 trans ya its shift kitted n stalled n never have a prob with it daily all summer......they are good trans to daily just like anything it has limits too
Hey do you downshift th400 from 3rd to 2nd at higher speeds on street like 40-60mph, or do you wait till almost stopped before downshifting full manual rvb t400. I was told never downshift till almost stopped. And you need pro mod drum too. Just curious how you downshift th400 and what advice you can give me. I destroyed my 2nd gear steel drum sprag in 2 days cause i didn't know not to downshift unless almost stopped. My tranny guy installing pro mod aluminum drum now. Hopefully no more failures. Do you still downshift 3rd to 2nd at 40-60mph?.I was told to keep foot on throttle with 3rd to 2nd downshifts and never coast in 1st or 2nd. But what good is streetcar if you can't downshift. How's your t400 holding up with 3rd to 2nd downshifts on the street. Any tips thanks.
True but if you are really wanting to street it alot it would help in saving the trans an I'm sure you paid around the same if not more for your trans and convert set up
I run a 4k coan converter, tci th400 streetfighter 3.70 gears and a gear vender. Wouldn't be without the o.d. love it. The next move is full manual with a t brake. Constant foot breaking at the track is too much work. And want the higher line pressure for better shifting
A couple questions, why didn’t you just manual valve body a 4l80E so you could have 4th gear? And also were you able to wire in your gear selection lights on the dash?
Not trying to be a stick in the mud here, but... 6:21 No race shop can do that. None! Yes you need a good car to perform, but you also need experience and skill. There's no race shop that can make it easy to become a successful racer. They can build you a car, but everything else is up to you. You can have the best car in the world, but if you can't race it, what's the point?
Good vid and pretty informative. Why is there no converter lock? I’m a manual trans guy and have been since I was a kid working on my dads cars with him. Only autos I have are now that I’m a dad I am taking a break from fast cars and have my SUVs
No problem. The one you have fun with on the highway is the old granny low with 3 drive gears manual. Those things your stuck at about 55-60 on the highway. Had a 76 Dodge d300 1 ton. Plus it also depends on your rear end gearing. If your a 4:10 rear you'll be around 60 but if your 3:55s or 3:73s you usually ok for the highway
apology in advance if this is a silly question, but when you drive a newer model car like yours and you want to put in a TH300 do you buy and old one from the 60's-70's or do they make newer after markets copies or something? Thanks of all the info in your videos!!
It’s silly , because he should be saying can you Daly drive a Turbo 400 with a full manual valve body. The biggest problem is not the non lock up converter . Its the no engine breaking you get from a full manual valve body.. Years ago the converters were switch pitch . Variable pitch didn’t need the lock up feature But youngsters don’t know that. Ima have to start my own you channel .Blaaa
@JJ Jones; Unit comes with it's own PCU, can be left in full auto; split all three shifts lo/hi. Or, can shift manually split upshifts, Or bypass PCU, for normal 1-2-3 shifts w/o splitting. Splitting each gear keeps the engine in that sweet RPM power band (essentially like a 6 spd. Automatic) These units are built to last also. I've had mine over 2 years, not a single issue.
I know this is an older video BUT it is funny to me .... Can you drive a TH400 on the streets...... When I was younger we had glides, Th350 and 400 and we drove our stuff daily
Do you have to manually shift it from 1st to 3rd or If you were to just leave it in 3rd gear would it shift by itself from first to third or would it just stay in third ????? Asking because I’m looking in to buying this shifter for my 5th gen Camaro
So I just got a th400 and I am running a 4400 stall. The one thing I haven’t really figured out is what gearing to go with for racing. You have any input??
I seen a 90's Silverado, with a TH400 swap and a 454 ci for sale on FB Market the other day, and thought I don't know what a TH400 is let me look that up. 🤣
I’m not trying to be snotty or anything. Why is everybody asking? Can you daily Drive TH 400 Transmission? Yes you can why not other than it will tear up a LS or newer engine because the thrush bearing is in the middle of the crankshaft . Drive That Thank. 😃😎😃
People been daily driving th400’s for half a century... didn’t even know this is something people would even ask? Lol

Have you ever thought about installing a gearvendors overdrive/underdrive?
i have an el camino with a th350, 3000 stall and 3.73 gears and i daily drive it no issues whatsoever
Hows it at 60
Jake Tobin at 60 I’m at about 2700 and I’m on a 28in tall tire
Why do people think you can only go 55 with a 3 speed.
Might mention that is a reverse pattern trans. For the "newbie " ?
If you arent rodding it around town or just nice long cruise down the highway/interstate, is it still necessary to have a trans cooler? Or will it overheat even with just normal "not heavy foot" driving? And if a trans cooler is necessary, what do you recommend to prevent overheating issues?
Jegs the one with the fan not cooler
A full manual valve body conversion is something else entirely. I think that's the point of the video, the title is a little misleading.
My truck is an LS 6.0, 4L80e with a reverse pattern manual valve . Not for everyone.
Hi Jean, I'm a complete TH400 newbie but considering buying a Firebird Formula with a TH400 with a full manual reverse pattern valve body. How is it different than a non-manual?
Military CUCV's (Chevy Blazers) are a good source for TH400's.
Right now I'm daily driving a two speed behind a 450 hp ls ...no problem ..
All there was out there?
TH350, TH200, C6, C4, 727 torqueflight?
This should still be a factory option for American sports cars.
Put a gear vendors unit behind it and then you can split gears
daily drive a 66 grand prix tri power 389 with a factory 400 trans ya its shift kitted n stalled n never have a prob with it daily all summer......they are good trans to daily just like anything it has limits too
I built a TH400 for my 1969 Grand Prix SJ with minor built 428. DD it? Of course silly.
Any tips thanks.
have you ever thought about getting a gear vendors overdrive set up for the 400? not that you need it but it would give you an overdrive for your 400.
They are just soooo expensive!
@@supercharged6771 does your od kick in automatic at a certain speed or is is push button when u want to lock it in...
Do you have to get off the gas when up shifting and downshifting?
No
Ever heard of gear vendors overdrive?
Naw... You can't possibly daily drive a transmission that came out in vehicles that were daily driven for years.... 🤦♂️
Your set up in my 05 Colorado would be fun
A couple questions, why didn’t you just manual valve body a 4l80E so you could have 4th gear? And also were you able to wire in your gear selection lights on the dash?
So you think the 4l80E would be better than the th400 bc I wanna know before I buy I’m doin a dash swap also an I want my dash an gear shift to work
No comparison
@@kayfarrow4675 if you want overdrive and a lockup converter the 80e is better. But it has more internals then a th400 so heavier.
Not trying to be a stick in the mud here, but... 6:21
No race shop can do that. None! Yes you need a good car to perform, but you also need experience and skill. There's no race shop that can make it easy to become a successful racer. They can build you a car, but everything else is up to you. You can have the best car in the world, but if you can't race it, what's the point?
Do you let go of the gas and then shift or keep on the gas as you shift?
Never let off the gas
Good vid and pretty informative. Why is there no converter lock? I’m a manual trans guy and have been since I was a kid working on my dads cars with him. Only autos I have are now that I’m a dad I am taking a break from fast cars and have my SUVs
What brand shifter do you have in that white and orange Camaro and do they sell a kit that goes right in I'm doing one myself
Very good my boy John keep up and love video 💯
Can you run 75 on the interstate for a long time without issues?
John Alderden if your rod bearings aren't rattling you can. My old 82 k20 ran fine on the highway
Ren Höek thank you sir
If you go TH400 and say below 2000 hp, you can simply install a Gear Vendors.
Ren Höek what your axle ratio?
apology in advance if this is a silly question, but when you drive a newer model car like yours and you want to put in a TH300 do you buy and old one from the 60's-70's or do they make newer after markets copies or something? Thanks of all the info in your videos!!
No one has ever asked this question.
It's not can you... The real question is, what would it be like to daily a High HP car with a TH400. read between the lines bud.
@@robsamoles3912 let all the anger out buster. Who hurt you.
Can go through and explain your engine build
It’s silly , because he should be saying can you Daly drive a Turbo 400 with a full manual valve body. The biggest problem is not the non lock up converter . Its the no engine breaking you get from a full manual valve body.. Years ago the converters were switch pitch . Variable pitch didn’t need the lock up feature
But youngsters don’t know that. Ima have to start my own you channel .Blaaa
How are the Kirkey seats when you drive around on the street??. looking at getting a pair for my build...
Love them they are amazing.
Ever considered hanging a Gear Vendors O/d behind the TH400? It made a HUGE difference driveability to my car.
Any issues with the gear vendors....was it electronic or manual when u wanted to lock in od?
@JJ Jones; Unit comes with it's own PCU, can be left in full auto; split all three shifts lo/hi. Or, can shift manually split upshifts, Or bypass PCU, for normal 1-2-3 shifts w/o splitting. Splitting each gear keeps the engine in that sweet RPM power band (essentially like a 6 spd. Automatic) These units are built to last also. I've had mine over 2 years, not a single issue.
@@Rick-O-Shay60 only bad part is no lock up converter.
@@horsefly1020 honestly never missed L/U having the GV it is close to L\U when in 3 HI
I know this is an older video BUT it is funny to me .... Can you drive a TH400 on the streets...... When I was younger we had glides, Th350 and 400 and we drove our stuff daily
You could always put a gear vendor overdrive in it
why not a 700R4? You get the strength and the 4th gear. You need an over drive bad
Austin Rode 700r4 is not stronger than a 4l60e is basically the same transmission just not electronically controlled
Austin Rode 700r4
Strong?
Hahahahaha
th 400 with a gear vendor overdrive is miles ahead of a 700r4 because even when built a 700r4 cant handle all the abuse.
What’s your definition of strong?
COWMARO for president
The cow isn't a street car. It has a cage no car that has a cage isn't a street car. It's a race car that can be driven on the street
How long do you leave the transcooler on when you’re driving around town?
They had them on all kinds of stuff. Can you daily it? Most Definately. Wouldn't want anything else behind my big block olds.
Morning Doc!
what stator from ptc u find work best i have ptc and tried couple stators?
Do you have to manually shift it from 1st to 3rd or If you were to just leave it in 3rd gear would it shift by itself from first to third or would it just stay in third ????? Asking because I’m looking in to buying this shifter for my 5th gen Camaro
Duane Smith it will not shift for you ever being manual valve body look into a 4l80e if you wanna be able to put it in drive and just go
Just don't put a manual valve body in the th400 and it shifts nice!!!
Ik this video is old but what tire size and gears are you running
So I just got a th400 and I am running a 4400 stall. The one thing I haven’t really figured out is what gearing to go with for racing. You have any input??
Depends on tire size and if u plannto run 1/8th it 1/4
I’ll be on a 32 inch tall tire and 1/4 mile
What gear is on the cowmaro?
I seen a 90's Silverado, with a TH400 swap and a 454 ci for sale on FB Market the other day, and thought I don't know what a TH400 is let me look that up. 🤣
It’s a beast!
Can you daily a TH 400, sure it was an oem trans
What transmission cooler did you use?
I’m not trying to be snotty or anything. Why is everybody asking? Can you daily Drive TH 400 Transmission? Yes you can why not other than it will tear up a LS or newer engine because the thrush bearing is in the middle of the crankshaft . Drive That Thank. 😃😎😃
Where Is Rpm Motorsports Located?
JOHN DOC WHAT UP!!
