It reminds me of the old days with the manual valve body THM 400 tranny’s and B&M style ratchet shifters. Man those were fun to drive, especially when you got on it hard slap shifting!

Excellent video and explanation of what a manual valve body drives like. This is pretty neat setup, you are basically doing the work of a transmission computer.
It's a lot of work to get to 4th gear though. I wouldn't like that setup in a drag truck, to much shifting inconsistency or missed shifts. Although, you would have the advantage of having total control over turbo spool. For daily driver/drag, it would be better to get an aftermarket Trans. controller, (like the ATS Diesel Co-Pilot) it offers adjustable control over torque converter lockup. There are other advantages he could of went over, but I think that would be a different more advanced video.

Thank for the video, this was the best explained non reverse manual lookup video.
I have a question and it may help others. My question is this
    1 2 3 TCL Overdrive upshift
    Overdrive TCL off 3 2 1.
    Or should down be
    TCL off Overdrive 3 2 1?
I just installed a Killduff with the two buttons for OD and TCL.
    Really appreciate your input.
    Thank you.
    Subbed.

I have a FMVB 48 as well. ive got about 10k miles on it, normal daily driving i do 1,2,3, OD, TCL, slowing down is TCL off, OD off, 3rd. come to a stop, then back to 1st to take off. I Do OD to 3rd locked down shifts but only on decel with my exhaust brake. I think the problem would be locked down shifts under power.

Looking at a truck that has this style of shifter and I’m new to this can someone explain the lock out process? And exactly what it does and why it’s needed?

    • @jerryhaveman5659
      @jerryhaveman5659 Год назад +1

I have a FMVB 48re like this guy. not sure what lock out process you are referring to. With the TC (torque converter) it is normally unlocked, meaning it is slipping, similar to slipping a clutch in a manual transmission. The TC has a clutch inside that when pressurized is pushed against a plate, thus locking the TC making it turn as one unit -no slipping-. like when you fully let off the clutch pedal on a manual transmission.

Still need the TCM to work in order for it to shift. Manual valve body just allows you to tell it when to shift but all the electronics inside the valve body still have to do their job

      I run a FMVB in my 06 CCSB 4x4. light driving I shift from 1600-2000rpm, or roughly 2nd at 20mph, 3rd at 30mph, 4th at 40mph and TCL at 50mph. i get 13.5 to 14.5 with 33 inch tires.

for daily-driving type shifting, I usually 'lift' a little on the throttle as it's shifting to OD. In my mind's eye, it's similar to the tcm not shifting to OD when throttle is still accelerating above a certain rate.@@DennyDiesel
