My driving instructor charged me 35x5 lessons to ramble on about cockpit drill, and didnt teach me nothing else, and yet i learnt so much more through this video. This is a decent and well intentioned young man, that i wish all the success life has to offer.
I’m glad you liked it. Will definitely be doing more of these. Thank you. 🙏🏾

Thank u for this well explained video u are an excellent driving instructor 👏
Thank you for sharing the video very helpful. I appreciate it.
This video is really informative and well explained. Thanks bro.
subscribed. every bit of this video is worth watching and staright away info. Thanks alot mate.
Great to have you on board. Thank you 🙏🏾
Been watching a lot of tutorial videos for driving manual, and your content is by far the most clear and concise compared to other channels You also expand upon most driving situations smoothly and calmly. Both practical, and applicable. Nice work!
Thank you for the great feedback 🫶🏾
Really really helpful! Thank you!
This is really good. thank you!
Very nice Video! One Part that i might add is that many people stay on the clutch If they stand for a longer duration(for example Traffic light) instead of just switching to idle. If you stay on the clutch you wear out the release bearing for no reason.
One of the best “How to Drive a Manual Car” videos I’ve seen here on RUclips! Keep posting such amazing stuff, bro 👍
Thanks, will do!
Just got my first MT car. Appreciate videos like this one.
You taking off helped me tons 🎉 clear precise and well put together on exact point every stick driver questions
Glad it helped
This is the best video on RUclips for manual driving. Thank you bro much love From New York City NY

Hi ZONDO, i passed my manual driving test today with 5 minors i just wanted to say thanks for all the videos ive been watching over the years as they have really helped me with my test.
Hey Kay. Well done on your Pass. Thank you for watching over the years. People like you have helped the channel grow 🫶🏾
@@ZONDOdriving no problem I will still watch all your videos because you are good at explain things and getting to the point
Thank you . Ive learned a lot . Its the best video !!!
Glad you did Valerie. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing mate , it helps alot 👏🏻
Glad it helped
I have watched many Videos regarding driving instructions in various channels But You are the best explaining Very clearly each situation and questions came in mind for beginners👍🏼. Great job
Thank you so much! 🫶🏾
Well done Mr.Zondo, great information well presented. I’ve just returned to driving a manual car after 30 years of driving mostly automatics, your advice is exactly the stuff I’ve relearned or was never taught in the first place! 👍
Thank you. And welcome back to Manual 😎
He really nailed exactly what I wanted to know, great job and thank you!
Great to hear
Straight to the point no bs this will help me immensely on future lessons thanks you!
You're a 🌟
Great video, nice and concise thanks - definitely needed this!
Glad you enjoyed it!
as a learner I've had like 14 hours driving and I can drive pretty good but I always struggled down shifting smoothly this vid really helped
thanks!!
Glad you found it useful. You will get much smoother the more you drive. 👍🏾
13:01 The first time I have change the gear I realise that I shouldn't try looking down which is dangerous. So I started going over in my head the application of not looking down at the gears to change the gears. So you're right about this matter. 😎💯💪🏿👍🏿
All that I wanted to learn you have mentioned them, you are well experienced driver brother and I want to be a teacher too
I've only been driving for a few months as of now, when I was a beginner I had a hard time shifting and controlling the clutch. Shifting up or down comes a lot easier when you actually hear and feel the car needing to change gears, it's almost like it's crying for you to change it and once you get used to feeling your car, you'll start to change gears much smoother without even looking at the speedometer.
wow thanks for this, very informative 👏
Glad it was helpful!
thank you for the video! I haven't driven manual in a very long time and now I'm driving a small 3 cylinder car and going up steep inclines have really been a challenge, I wasn't sure what speed to be on the different gears, the car I bought for fuel efficiently isn't very powerful so it is a new challenge. thank you for the videos. God bless you
Thank you Jose. All the best with your manual car 🫶🏾
this was a gold mine
Feel like he was calling me out, cos i do so many of these things! 🤣 Super helpful advice, explained in clear concise manner. Brilliant 👏🙏
Thank you 🫶🏾
Excellent video encouraging good, smart, and safe habits.
Thank you 🙌🏾
Good video. I’m an instructor of 15 years and teach as you are doing! Keeping it simple for learners.
Much appreciated Andy. There's no need to complicate things. They're under a lot of stress as it is. Good to hear from an instructor 😎
Hi. I have been a driving instructor for 17 years and will say the same, this is exactly how I teach my pupils. You and Andy will recognise this, you get a pupil who has been driving before and they are doing all the things wrong that you highlighted in your video and when you enquire as to "who told you to do it that way" they say their previous instructor. It makes me despair that there are driving instructors out there that teach car control all the wrong way. Then of course you spend the next 4 lessons trying to break the bad habits they were taught before. @@ZONDOdriving
Love this video man thank you
My pleasure!
super helpful thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
I have got my license for almost two months now, so I am fresh out of driving school, yet this video taught me so much about driving a manual, in contrast to my driving instructor. Thanks a lot!
Thanks. But you probably learnt a lot more from them than you realise.

Very practical and helpful, what happened if i forget what gear i was using 😮
just started driving manual, this tutorial was very well done! thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Very helpful informative video must watch don't miss to watch it's useful new car learners
Much appreciated
Brother you too good 👍🏿
Thank you for the video. In the beginning I noticed that at the traffic lights you engaged 1st gear and keept the clutch pedal pressed. This should be avoided as it wears out the clutch.
How a car should be stopped at the traffic lights is with neutral engaged and the break pushed. This is also the only way that a start stop system is going to be engaged to save on fuel.
Thanks for the info! It's mainly for beginners who are trying to pass their test
In general if you cant control the clutch in reverse its gonna be hard to use if your on hill in moving traffic
7:10 My current driving instructor uses his hands to hold the steering wheel together with my hands to assist me. But his hand prevents me from making full long turns of the steering wheel because it is intertwine with mines. This is why I believe his method of teaching is lacking refinement and is risky because both of our hands will invariably get entangled when making certain maneuvers. I never thought my driving learning experience would be so crude and unsophisticated to the point of being below the basis of any teaching level. 😎💯💪🏿👍🏿
fantastic driving instructor
Thank you
Good stuff
You are a very good instructor
I appreciate that!
2:04 instead of just leaving it in gear u change to the right gear while u turn then there wouldn’t be any rumbling
Bro thank you for this video I wish I watched it before my test 😢
You got this!
Great video my brother
Thank you! 🙌🏾
All of these are stuff i struggle with in my car. I'm a new driver and just bought a 2004 g35 coupe. These tips will help me get a lot more comfortable in my car
Good to hear. Let me know how it goes! 😁
How is it as a car, do you struggle woth the length?
@@7rodo what do you mean?
@damionsinmons23 normally beginners get a hatchback like a fiesta or a yaris because theyre shorter in length and easier to manuever. So for your experience does having a coupe affect you in that way, and does the power output mess with your driving experience?
@@7rodo I don't think the length is what gets me. However the power output kind of scares me a bit especially since I'm not all the way proficient in driving the car so I kind of freeze in fear
The bit about not forcing it into gear was my biggest problem learning. Keep doing 2nd to 5th and my mom would be like tell me to give it more power haha.
Lots of people do it for some reason. Why do you think you do it?
Thank u very much, I watch this multiple times and I finally got it... now I'm gonna shocked my instructor 😅😅
😅😅 A good shock I hope. Thanks for watching! 🫶🏾
thanks bro
No problem
Nice video, except for the first recomendation. It is better to blip the gas downshift a gear, let the motor star breaking the car on its own and keep doing that for all gears. Less brake wear and you keep better control of the car
There are a lot of good tips in this video, but I can't help but point out some things you did in the video which I find less than optimal.
Riding the clutch at a stop light is a great way to shorten the life of your throwout bearing. I almost always put the car into neutral while waiting. I've heard the argument that you have to do it in slower cars so you don't take too much time setting off, but having driven a base model Citroën C3 with an oar for a gear lever, I don't see it. You're not trying to make a race start and if you are slow at moving your gear lever, waiting half a second more won't make a difference to most people.
I agree that you should avoid rough gear changes. It lets you react when something is wrong before grinding gears. But that doesn't mean you should avoid reasonably quick ones. Taking too much (or too little) time shifting means you don't 'catch' the revs and the clutch has to make up for the work you should have done to match the speed of the engine to the speed of the wheels.
This also applies to shifting down to overtake. Letting the clutch do the work will slow you down before you can use the lower gear to accelerate faster. It also doesn't light up your brake lights.
Rev matching is somewhat advanced, but very much worth learning. Not only to extend the life of your car's components, but also to increase driving enjoyment.
Locking arms while turning is bad, which is why we have the hand over hand technique. Some people find shuffling the steering wheel to have its merits.
Great analysis. I agree with your point about changing gears quicker. If you take too long on while climbing a hill for instance, there may be an issue. Locking arms is always bad when doing sharp turns, where as crossing arms may be OK.
he sat with the clutch pedal depressed at the traffic lights

I passed my driving test from the first try in August 2022 with zero penalty points, but it’s only few months later (when I got my own car) that I realized there were so many things I still didn’t know about clutch control, that my instructor simply didn’t teach me. I don’t know how, but the car I was driving during the lessons with him didn’t have any issue about leaving only using the clutch and not the gas too. And there’s another thing that absolutely left me in disbelief when I’ve firstly driven my own car, because I simply didn’t understand why it was so different from the other car I was used to: when driving off a hill, my instructor taught me this technique - clutch and brake both down, release the clutch a little bit until the car starts slightly shaking, then release the brake, then fully release the clutch - it’s only now that it seems odd to me, how could that car move off a hill without using the gas AT ALL? Being a beginner, I thought that’s how it works for every car. I had a disastrous day when I drove with my dad and I absolutely couldn’t get the car to move on the hill because of what my instructor told me. And what’s even more weird, the technique I’ve learned from the instructor seemed perfect because in that manner I NEVER got the car to stall or even go an inch backwards. It was never ever going backwards, but the way everyone is teaching, there’s still a slight chance that the car will still go backwards for a very tiny bit. Sorry for the long comment, but I’m thinking there should be an explanation for these, and in other words, thank you for explaining so well and for being such a nice person. I wish you were my instructor.
No need to apologise for the long comment, I honestly appreciate it. As you've experienced, each car drives slightly differently but now that you know that, the next car you drive should be a lot easier to control as you will have more experience. Good luck with your driving. 🫶🏾
@@ZONDOdriving Thanks for the tips! Can you also do more videos about driving in traffic (encountering different situations for example clutch control in traffic uphill when the cars in front keep stopping and moving slowly) ? Subscribed and much love from Romania 🇷🇴🫶🏻
Hi boss , hw r u ? i didn't hear from u about me doing mock test with u ASAP because my test is 28 march 11:11 at mill hill
Interesting video. Please where is your centre located?
NW London
It’s been 2 years since I’ve passed (excruciating) and I’ve forgotten how to drive well kinda also I’ve never driven on the motorway just dual carriageways plus the insurance companies charge way to high for new drivers at least in my opinion putting me off from buying a car (not employed 😅) so I won’t be driving for a while
You should get some refresher lessons the hire cars every now and again to keep your skills and confidence up.

Beautiful
I miss driving automatic. It's fun and you do a much better Job You're self then the computer🍻
Normally I see people saying they miss manual
@@ZONDOdriving What i mean't. I miss manual so much.
Engine braking is never advised for any car. It’s cheaper to replace brake pads and discs than replacing an engine. Other than that, pretty sound advise. 👍🏼
Not too sure cause engine breaking is useful when going downhill and trying not to put too much heat into the brakes
what are you talking about😭😭
It's not gonna break the engine lol. The engine can handle it
All these YT advisors are applying the brake without the clutch. This shows that most are not aware of the function of the clutch in the system. Applying a resistive force while the engine is engaged with the transmission.
Also, the shape of the head of the gear suggests how it must be grabbed _(roll the fingers into a loose fist)._ There is no need for all those movements while downshifting from the 3rd to the 2nd, unless it matches an individual's comfort quotient.
An asian guy on RUclips had said when you are in 5th gear doing 50mph but want to pass someone in front of you whom moving slower you should double clutch to downshift to 4th and maybe 4rd. Is that correct?
After I see this .. I will apply tomorrow as a taxi driver .. thank you ..
How did it go?
@@ZONDOdriving thank you
I’m just here to say I love your donut socks 😂
A person of culture! I love it 😎😅
Do you press the gas before the biting point then, while the clutch is barely up from the floor? Or can you add gas while the clutch is on the floor then bring it up to biting point?
Good question. To keep things simple, it's best to add gas just after getting the biting point. That way it will work whether you're on a slope or flat bit of road.
I wish I had you as an instructor because mine literally said I don't have a brain even tho I did almost nothing wrong
I hope you're joking. If not, there are plenty of really nice instructors around. You don't have to stick to one.
How can I judge what turns to make in first or second gear any idea about east London (Goodmayes)test centre Roads
I took my test here, narrow roads 1st, wide open 2nd.
If you can't see into the turn you're going into, you'll most likely need 1st gear.
@@ZONDOdrivingI passed (Wanstead) yesterday 3 minors.I took the wrong exit and ended on the A12 carriageway and had to circle back but because I done it safely no fault but made the test extra 10,15 min.A day I won’t forget 😂.Thanks for your vids
Doesn't it burn the clutch more by doing it "smoothly" tho? like the 3 seconds thing feels like over time its not too good?
No, it will only burn if you're using an excessive amount of gas at the same time
how did u start ur engine at 4:27 without keys and start button, or i`m blind and didn`t see it
u are pressing clutch pedal so engine start, i get it ahahahaha
Stop/Start feature
Rev match?
But why can’t you just hit the clutch go to neutral and then just break slowly still you fully stop and if you don’t fully stop just go to 2nd gear and just keep going?
Because the breaking pads are gonna get hot and at some point the brakes wont even work.
You just taught a whole lot in 13mins
🙌🏾
Is it good to keep on hold the clutch while brake pls anyone 😢😢
Are you moving or staying still?
He's so good...I ended up not listening to my driving instructor 😂
Of course 🤣
Thank you. But you should still listen to your instructor 🫣
6:12 i’m gonna be honest, this felt personal lol
😂 I guess it's something you do?
With the clutch coasting on the turns, I do that but then I spike the rpm’s a tad to get into 2nd usually.
Im a diva with manual. My car does auto rev match and it fights to not stall.
😎 Diva. Love it 😅
As a german i can say i am already the best
as an American, i can say a manual transmission works better than a car alarm here... lol
2:50 straight bars
🔥🔥
u don't need to hold Ur clutch if u already stop the whole car. go to neutral
I prefer that way for new learners so that they don't struggle to move off when the light goes green.
0:53 wouldn’t it just be better to go into neutral?
Not if you're new and are the first person at the lights. Better to be ready to go. Less hassle.
Your spedo is in mph or kmph

Youve missed all the benifits of engine braking
We no longer use engine braking. Use more brakes less gear changing. Brake pads a lot cheaper to replace compared to clutches and gear boxes.
@@user-py5up8zy1t never in 30 plus years worn out the clutch or gear box bit have changed pads and discs so your point isn't valid
@@wrightwoodwork I knew you were old from your comment, I always drove the same way but since becoming a training driving instructor. This is now the way we teach. Block changing is now the way.
@user-py5up8zy1t yes we still get taught block changing 30 odd years ago but holding the clutch in and going through the gears individually is stupid . The difference is I'm in the right gear all the time . If driving in snow you want to avoid touching the brakes as much as possible. It's nothing new do block gear changing.
@@wrightwoodwork he says that it is wrong to leave clutch in and change gears. What he did say was going from 5th to 3rd. I teach going from 5th to 2nd when coming off a dual carriageway. You get the speed down using your brakes then when at an appropriate speed you go down to 2nd
Bro who tf will stay on 1st gear and clutch on the traffic lights
I don't even go into first gear for stop signs 😎
Some of these mistakes are so bad, if someone do them, they should put down their driving licence, and stop driving permanently.
Look at the first one as an example.
If you want to do THAT, you just push the clutch, put it in empty, then lift your leg from the clutch.
Then you rolling empty, which is not the best, as the engine brake isn't working, so you must use your brake more, and in any emergency scenario you have less controll over the vehicle.
But, if you keep pushing the clutch, and switch gears like it would matter anything, then you are too stupid to be allowed to go into traffic.
Pressing the clutch for a long time is harmful, man.
