Thanks very much to Modern Vintage Gamer and Dlang6487 for helping with the footage!
It really is amazing how well the video quality of the original Xbox has held up all these years later
Yep, perhaps only surpassed by the console it got some inspiration from, the Sega Dreamcast! The DC looks amazing via VGA cable, and most games officially or unofficially support it.
6:59 This is a big deal that you just glossed over; this adapter can output the Dolby Digital 5.1 signal from the Xbox's S/PDIF output over HDMI, while other Xbox HDMI solution only output stereo audio converted from the Xbox's analog stereo audio output. The Xbox was the first console to have real time in-game Dolby Digital 5.1 audio (provided by Nvidia's Soundstorm hardware) and native HD 720p output before the Xbox 360 came along.
Yeah i bought the special cable to be able to connect optical cable for 5.1 surround, back in the day. Had a small tv screen but very good audio on my bed room. Great for gaming dvds and music too. Good times, Original Xbox was awesome.
The answer to the very question I had about having access to the _surround_ audio if I didn't have the original XBox component-video output adapter for the Toslink connection. _Thanks!_
... So the optical output on my PS2 only ever gave gaming surround audio in the ~cut-scenes , not in-game?
It can, but you have to add the "optional" toslink/optical audio port. Without that, you can't have 5.1.
@@LordRayken
The Chimeric Systems adapter sends the Dolby Digital/DTS/PCM from S/PDIF over HDMI.
@@Crlarl no it doesn't. You can see the optical port

I legitimately became worried for a split second because I thought it was going to be a MetalJesusRocks video, until I saw that it was RetroRGB.
Nothing against the dude, I think he’s cool. He just talks about the cheap HDMI solutions like they’re perfect.
Woohoo! Always nice to get more options, specially if they're well designed and fairly priced like the Chimeric Systems HDMI Adapter. Nice work!
Just made a few sets of my own component cables using some of the official Xbox 360 component cables I had lying around.
Chop the plug end off both cables, pull back the sheathing on the OG plug, solder wires from Xbox 360 component cable to OG Xbox plug appropriately, and re-apply sheathing. You now have a great, and cheap component cable for OG Xbox. You do have to jump 4 pins together in the plug in order to enable "component video mode". Picture is immaculate, and arguably better than using the official HD pack from the OG era.
Made 5 of these already, and they all work very nice. The X360 component cable had pretty good shielding, and that benefits the OG Xbox you plug it into.
I have done 3 and would like to add, I have zero soldering skills. It just takes patience. I had these cords laying around. It looks way better than my Chinese cord off amazon. Good first solder project in my opinion.
Any access/connectivity available to the surround audio with that mod? Looking for the cheapest route here for C-V & SA.
any chance you could do a video on it? sounds like a cool diy project that more people could hear about!
Bonus: If you're using the SD/HD Xbox 360 cable, you can use the yellow RCA connector for S/PDIF.
@@Crlarl ,
Woah! Didn't know the cable could send digital coaxial down that cable let alone without noise/interference. Both original Xbox as well as 360 have option to operate that way when using that cable? 🤔 hm.
Out of all the videos you'll find about this topic, this one is easily the best. Great explanation, decent production values, extremely clear how each step works and provides various ways of doing it.
Thanks a lot. Got yourself a subscriber! :-)
One should mention, that this only works on NTSC Xbox'es. PAL Xbox'es have to be (soft)modded to even output 480p - 1080i.
@@thorbampougias311 I assume he meant the broader audience, not you in personal :)
Exactly
(Edited 09.01.2022 because I made some typing mistakes)
Not necessarily. You could use the exploit of Splinter Cell (or any other game that has an exploit) to just run Enigmah-X to set your console to NTSC. This alone makes the console output NTSC and gives you access to all the higher resolutions. Note that it doesn't change the region of the console so while you can't play US games with that alone you can at least play PAL games in 480p which there are many of which that support 480p. But of course, once you go that far, you might as well install a softmod on it, install a custom Dashboard and so on.
@@danielblack6529 All my OG Xbox are either soft or chip modded, but the average Joe might already face issues running the splinter cell exploit.
I didn’t realize that. That’s weak.
YES!!! Finally some Xbox love!
TofumanFC3S I know fuck the ps2
7:18 - "audio conversion chip allows the Digital Audio to be passed over HDMI, including surround sound." - THIS!!!! FREAKING THIS!!!!! I am sold. Bob, any chance you can review this? This is my primary reason for staying away from all other Xbox HDMI products, and now I found one to get.

I used to run my Xbox with the Monster component on a 32 inch HD CRT. Loved it.
I also use an HD CRT for my Xbox
If supported (like on many 4 : 3 CRTs) , does the RGB mod+switch to the component-video input on those widescreen CRTs prove as advantageous to the visuals as it does on the 4 : 3 CRTs?
I just made my own component cables out of OEM 360 cables yesterday, totally worth the effort!
I did that as well.
Is there anyway to keep the toslink output by doing this?
57Rye I’m not sure, maybe? There’s a pin out available if you google it. I know the OEM hd video pack has digital audio.
Thanks to the quarantine i finally finished my cable last nite. What are the chances
57Rye I know someone on eBay sold these modded cables and I believe they also had one with the toslink
Just picked up one of the original Xbox HD packs a couple of weeks ago. It works really well. 😁
Microsoft also released an official Xbox Component Cable, those are even better then the HD AV Pack you showed.
Better how? I havent noticed a difference
🤔
Best retro (mod/uppgrade) channel on RUclips!
I bought the OG Xbox HD cables when Xmen Legends 2 came out as it was 720p and I had a 16x9 HD CRT that took 480/720p and 1080i signals that I was using as a monitor for my pc at the time
Nice! That was a sweet setup.
Just bare in mind that for using component direct to the panel, you're likely to be at the mercy of what the tv does to lock in to a specific display process. In addition, you'll also have overscan to deal with.
If you can switch the input label to PC, you might be able to bypass the processing and hopefully remove the overscan. Otherwise I had success with the OSSC as input via HDMI does not suffer from any setting lock.
23 years later I still have mine i may be only 18 but I grew up on this console with my dad even tho he kicked my ass in like every game that wasn't sneak king lol
I remember back in the days, RCA made a CRT SDTV with an XBOX input socket called a vport. It looked somewhat like the AV port on the back of the XBOX, and it used a special cable to connect the XBOX to the TV. It fed a component signal, so the picture was nice and sharp.
I bought that tv used and it’s 32 inches…probably around 60 lbs. I use my Dreamcast on it.
Avoid generic composite cables like the plague. The one I got picks up interference like a dry sponge and will make the screen flicker every few seconds. The only way to eliminate the flicker and most of the static has been to move the Xbox to a TV where it's the only thing plugged in.
TekNemesis and Chimeric rock :D
You get a good result running your original Xbox though the tv hdmi input on a Xbox one x or Xbox one s and tbh I haven't really noticed any lag but that just might be me.
edit2: I found out that the 480p games that support 16:9 only output the same 720x480 480p image (with squeezed pixels to be stretched to 16:9) and NOT a 854x480 image as I thought it would be. (yes it's weird, NTSC standard is technically 720x480 and the TV scales it down to 640x480, so this does benefit conversion to 16:9 compared to a native 640x480 signal). This means that if you run one of these games and set your TV to stretch/wide (as you're supposed to achieve full 16:9), you LOSE resolution density. Yes, you gain some FOV but you also lose clarity compared to 480. You're basically playing equivalent to about 450p widescreen.
Why does the xbox setting need to be set to widescreen? If the game is outputting in 480p, normal mode from the xbox settings is fine right?
edit: Oh wow I had no idea there are games that support 480p @16:9 (854x480). I just bought a used Xbox and was planning on just playing the 480p games in letterbox. Great to know this.
I've always found that colours on the original xbox look kind of flat. Is there some kind of setting or mod that changes the colour profile?
@retroRGB - I’ve been struggling with input lag for years. I always thought it was the nature of the beast due to the age gap between the Xbox, the Xbox HD AV Pack and my LG LED TV. It drove me nuts. Made many games unpleasant to play.
As you suggested, I shut off the 1080i option and, all of my input lag issues are gone. I am in awe. Somehow, the 480p signal is coming through much clearer as well, a second issue I’d been dealing with. Considerably less blur. Thank you very much. 🙏🏻🙏🏻
DUDE! This is a great breakdown/analysis of all the options for modern play on the OG Xbox!! Really appreciate it, man.
I just discovered this vid and your channel because I was google'ing options on how to get started gaming again on the OG system, but with a modern TV, and this link came up for me. Needless to say, I have liked and subscribed!

I actually have those Monster Cables. I haven't used them in years. I guess it's time I dust them off. I think I paid something like $15 for them when they were new. They were really expensive, but mine were a customer return. I think they were something like $80-100 new. It was shocking.
Nice video dude, love the Rust In Peace Dean back there 👀
Actually, there’s at least one Xbox title that misprioritizes resolutions and will use a lower resolution even if a higher resolution is enabled. Check out the comments on ImplantGames’s HD on Xbox video.
Hey, thanks for that heads-up! 👍

Am looking for a source here that lists the resolutions supported by games on the original XBox with applicable footnotes. (There's such a list for the PS2... or, there _was_ on Wikipedia). Much appreciated if anyone can point me in the right direction for a comprehensive link with info that's accurate. 👍
Having an issue with hdmi to xbox on my x950h sony tv. It works fine on my ACER Predator monitor, but fickers in and out on my sony.
I use the Monster components myself, they are crazy tight to connect to my tv's and always have been. I'm very interested to see a little more info on the HDMI solution like you are showing here. The cheap cables that Hyperkin and Pound sell (i know it's the same cable with diff logos) just don't meet my standards in terms of color quality and Reproduction.
That's my biggest complaint about the Monster cables.
Paul Ramos agreed, they’re super tight and almost feel like I’m going to rip the rca jack out of my tv some times, but they work great
Would you say the Chimeric hdmi adapter is superior to those you mentioned? I've been looking for a comparison but I can't find one anywhere. From what I take from this video I'm assuming the Chimeric adapter is on another level.
Finally got my hands on the Kimarics converter a few months ago and it's amazing. To my eyes it looks exactly the same as the HD Video pack with HD retro vision cables and a RetroTink 2X Pro M but is WAY less complicated to get setup and quite a bit cheaper. Took a while for it to be in stock, but if you're willing to wait, I think it's the best solution.
Looks like they caught up to demand. I just ordered one :)

Will it work on a Xbox 1.6?
I've got a Pound HDMI converter that i'm currently using. it's.. ok... but i'm on the waiting list for a Chimeric cable now.
Just ordered a chimeric one with toslink, i have the monster cables but i heard quality goes down with component to hdmi adapters, plus AVR do not accept 480p or higher through component to output through hdmi, only really really expensive ones do that
I can verify the cheapo component cables look WORSE than OEM S video (AV Pack). I own the Monster component cables. They're a MASSIVE jump over cheapos. As a Halo (CE & H2C) player every millisecond matters. Stear clear of the cheap scalers there too. Awesome video Bob.
Far the best visuals on the original Xbox are on CRT. HD TVs are not even touching that. I was comparing the consoles side by side CRT vs LCD. If you have to use a HD TV you should probably go for Xbox One and backwards compatibility. Also as for the emulators, none of them is capable of 240p, not even mentioning custom video modes, so forgey about really good clean retro gaming on CRT on Xbox.
Another way to get TECHNICALLY Official Microsoft OEM quality component cables for the OG Xbox really cheaply, (if you have the skills) is to find some commonly available Xbox 360 component cables and some official OG Xbox composite cables. (There are RUclips videos that show how to do this, thats how i did it, and describe it better than I can so keep that in mind) And what you do is, to put it rather crudely, chop off the connectors on both cables, and solder up the correct wires from the 360 component cables to the correct pins on the Xbox connector. Using a pin schematic its very simple if you have the skills. You can even wire up the cable for composite video while youre there if you really want to and have a 2 in 1 cable. Just dont plug in both at the same time xD. Thats the cable ive been using for about 3 years since I've done it and it looks GREAT!

I've tried out maybe 20 first party used model s controllers and all of them, the rubber was disgusting and trying to use it you could feel it just wearing away and sticking to your thumb
Is there some adapter for another controller not from that era that works for it? Or some modern controller that isnt gross in 2020? I love my xbox but literally cant play it when the controllers are usjng that early 2000's rubber thats just melted over the years
Xbox 360 controllers can work with a adapter.
-My Pelican PL-2063 is actually really nice for third party. If you're up to fixing your thumbsticks on your own, PS thumbsticks fit OEM controllers.
Side note: Duke controller thumbsticks are compatible as well. I had Duke sticks on my PS2 controllers for years before they wore down. Just replaced them with metal sticks so we'll see how they fare.
🤔 (Same question about clean/non-tacky, suitable solutions for original XBox controllers.)

Xbox the playstation we always wanted, kotor, jedi acedemt , halo....unreal championship...man this was madness!
Watched this video again and I wanted to add that if you are a OSSC owner retro gaming cables UK does offer a scart cable that carries the component video signal. I bought one and it does work but I can’t test any games yet because I my Xbox needs some fixing but I can boot the system up and change the resolution in the system menu.

Is it still an option? (Askin' because I haven't se en any in sale)
It seems to be always out of stock, but you can make your own via the info on the Github: www.retrorgb.com/xbox-open-source-video-project.html
Ever try the Neoya X2VGA+? This thing was amazing. It has VGA out, headphone jack out for speakers, toslink audio, and with the right dip switch setting will output composite as well. It can even display 480i on a VGA monitor using some special cheat mode so you can see the settings well enough to switch to higher resolutions. It can even pass through VGA and audio from your PC. The only downside is that the image is a little darker, perhaps something with the internal component to VGA converter. Or perhaps due to not requiring external power. Still have mine. Running like a champ. Will not work with my Samsung DLP for some reason though. Used to use this thing on the projectors at college for XB Connect and fun with crazy Halo mods.
Edit: Sorry, this was supposed to be on the main thread.

One study proved that audiophiles couldn't tell the diff between premium "oxygen free", 10 guage speaker wire and _coat hanger wire!_
Monster cable is a scam. Their "Coax digital" performs no better than any analogue RCA cable be it terminated with green, red, blue, white or yellow plastic!
I agree…except you can find used Monster cables for less than Microsoft’s Xbox cables. In that context, they’re great.
Oh god i got that pound hdmi for my Xbox and it’s like putting Vaseline all over my 4K tv
Did you have dark screen or crushed blacks issues? I'm using component to cheap hdmi converter box and getting this when using progressive scan resolutions.. I don't know if it's the tv
That Chimeric cable seems perfect for me. I have a hacked up HD AV pack that isn't great anymore and the official ones are really getting up in price on eBay. I also have that Monster cable you showed, but it's a POS. Death grip on the cinch connectors, no digital audio AND it still has ghosting. Avoid!
I build my component cable with an original Xbox360 component cable and solderd the XBOX Connector on it.
The 360 component cable is cheap and high quality.
I tried the Portta component to HDMI converter and the picture quality didn't look good because of the moving scanlines. I had to return it because of that.
I think what you're seeing is the scaling of 480i on a modern flat-panel. A MUCH better option is the RetroTINK 5x - That'll make it look amazing, but it's a lot more expensive.
Thank you , this helps , you are needed on youtube

I would've gotten Chimeric's hdmi box already, but I have to actually FINISH fixing my xbox first. (Although, now might be even harder to get one, haha) Chimeric's page for the box is "a small handful of orders" at a time, then they get built.
I recommend the memory card USB insert. Forget the cable, the controller is already plugged in, use that memcard slot you're never gonna use. It even comes as a power button variant if you have that specific mod installed as well.
At 2:23 when I click widescreen it just takes me back to my options menu after it switches to widescreen, quality did get way better, but I don’t have the option to run 1080i off or any of that.
You’d need to make sure the right cable is plugged in, or you won’t get HD options. So, not composite, s-video or SCART.
Those Monster Component cables are a NIGHTMARE to use. The ends are so tight you are in danger of ripping out your AV Inputs on your TV. Use extreme caution with those!!! I've had them since the XBOX was still neck to neck with the PS2.
How does the chimeric systems cable compare to the n64freak hdmi adapter? I have one of those and its pretty great.

@@That_Handle Yes it had the toslink port in the connector just like the hd box version had.
There's also the issue of rolling video. Even with shielded cables it's terrible in 480i but it's not as noticeable (if there are any problems) in the other resolutions. I believe you can replace some capacitors but I don't have the soldering skill to do it.
So as a UK viewer, the OG xboxes don't give you resolution options, it's just two options with Video Mode and Pablo-60, so even using Pound cable all the resolutions are fixed at 480p. I know you can softmod enable the options but I don't know how.
To enable 480p/720p/1080i on pal xboxes you need a debug disc so that you can change the mothermoards region from pal to ntsc but it will just output ntsc and no longer pal

Any thoughts or solutions?
I noticed I'm not.the only one with this problem
Two revisions of the Official Xbox Component cable exist. The one shown in the video with the breakout box, and the second resembling the more traditional cables that runs from a console to a TV.
Sometimes sellers incorrectly list the component cables as composite for low BIN prices, so it's worth spending a little time looking at images to find a good deal.
Personally, the Monster cables are the best. They're well made sturdy shielded cables that have stood up well. Only downside is their death grip. It can easily break or strip a RCA plug if you're not careful.
I just ordered the Chimeric HDMI cable with TOSLink for $60 shipped. I have a PS2 running component as well as a first-gen Wii running component. I was considering component for XBox and then running all 3 through a component switcher box into OSSC, but I also want a N64 with RGB (the HDMI cables for N64 are garbage and the Retro HDMI internal mod is insanely overpriced, I'm talking almost $1,000 for a system with it installed...)
Wow thanks man if I randomly didn't see your comment I would've missed out, I just pre orders mine as well, they are supposed to send you an email when it's available I never got one.
It’s actually surprising that mine can still activate after 20 freaking years
That was like my last birthday someone help I can’t activate it
Ever since I got my OG Xbox I've had the Monster component cables with the accompanying TOSLINK optical cable. For some reason only the component signal from my Xbox couldn't pass through either of my Onkyo receivers (no problem with my Wii though), so the Chimeric adapter looks like a great upgrade.
Which would you say is better? Speaking strictly cables and not the advance packs etc, are the custom Xbox 360 Component Cables for the OG Xbox better or equal to the Original Xbox Component Cables? The custom made are $30 + Ship and the OG are $85 and higher + Ship. I’m in the market but I’ll still need to buy the Component to HDMI Adapter you suggested and $50 is better than $105 but I capture and I want the best.
I don’t get a picture. Sometimes I can see something but goes black again. I have the portta converter. And the only options I see under video options are picture format and pal 60..
I’d never even seen a PAL Xbox. I’m really sorry, I have no advice. Maybe someone else in the comments can help?
I just found one so thanks for this
Actually pal region original xbox using rgb Scart has a resolution of 576i but most tv's don't support this.
Tbh if Microsoft goes all out and supports original Xbox games and 360 back compatible (thousands of games they say day one) on series x I shall be playing most of my collection on that.
Is there any preference for what TV to use? I’m trying to create a retro gaming room and gonna kit it out with the Xbox Original and GameCube. Was thinking of getting a Sony Bravia would this be a good choice?
Great video! Really helpful
Hello. Thanks for this great video. I have a question I am hoping you can help me with. When I turn on my Xbox the Home Screen is flickering really badly I am using an Xbox high definition av pack.
