- In this episode, we test out the Electron Shepherd Xbox2HDMI dongle, which promises to provide clean, crisp, digital HDMI output from an unmodified original Xbox.
Features:
Size: 58mm x 33mm x 12.6mm
Supply Voltage: 5V
Video Input: Component
Audio Input: Digital Surround Sound
Video Output: HDMI
Latency: LAG FREE!!
The original Xbox was the only one in the series that did not include an HDMI output. They did provide quality component video cables, as did Monster Cable, but for today's modern flat panel TVs, many people don't want to go through that hassle. There are companies that provide Xbox to HDMI cables, but generally speaking those tap into either the composite or S-Video output, and they don't look very good. In early 2023 we reviewed the Xedusa, designed to plug into your original Xbox and give you component, composite, optical audio output, and HDMI video output. It's a great device, but for some people, it might be overkill. Enter in the Electron Shepherd Xbox2HDMI dongle, a budget-friendly XBox2HDMI adapter that is under $50 and may be the ultimate solution for those looking for a simple yet good HDMI output for the Xbox.
The overall design of the Xbox2HDMI is very simple. You have a metal connector that goes into the multi-output on the back of your Xbox, a shroud around a PCB, and an HDMI output. The whole thing is only a few inches long, but much like the Xedusa it relies on the connector to provide strength and support for the cable. I'm going to look to 3D print something that will provide support down the road. The connector going into the system is fairly robust, and good quality, and the HDMI connector seems to be as well. I did feel like the HDMI connector was a little bit on the tight side, but I'd rather have that than have it flop around loose where could provide an intermittent connection.
I've been playing more and more of my Xbox lately, mostly thanks to the fact that I can now use other controllers with it. I started out by playing Star Wars Republic Commando, and I thought that the initial splash screen looked kind of grainy. When I got into the gameplay, however, I thought it looked really good. It very much reminded me of the visuals that I got out of like the Retro-bit Prism HDMI adapter or the Carby from Insurrection Industries for the GameCube. It wasn't doing any upscaling, it was giving me just a clean crisp 720p signal out of the system which is exactly what I wanted. It CAN technically output 1080i, but I feel 720p looks a lot better.
I moved on and played a number of games through this, one of my favorites is IndyCar Racing. I know, I know, in 50 ft make a left turn. At 50 more feet make another left-hand turn. While the character models and the cars were a bit boxy-looking, I thought everything looked super sharp. Best of all I didn't feel any lag or latency as I played.
I continued on and played several more games, Conkers Live and Reloaded, Doom 3, Ninja Gaiden, and they all had very similar performances. The color levels were accurate, the blacks were not overly soft or blown out, and I didn't notice any extreme jaggedness around anything, this is a pretty good solution in my opinion.
Why it RoX:
- Under $50
- Gives you a direct HDMI connection
- Very good performance
- Continually being updated
What could be improved:
- No external support for the weight of the dongle
- My HDMI port was a bit tight
- Still takes a while to ship
- Does not provide any upscaling
Should you buy one?
If your goal is to simply get a good, clean HDMI signal out of an original Xbox to connect to your modern TV I don't know that you're going to find a much better value than the Electron Shepherd Xbox2HDMI adapter. It's quite good in what it does and how it does it. When I originally ordered mine it was under $35, but it is since he had a price increase to push it north of $40. That's still about $20 less than the Xedusa, but the Xedusa does offer additional features. You can connect it to a RetroTink 2x Multiformat or 5x and get ine multiplication out of it, which the Xbox2HDMI does not do. The only way you can get any kind of line multiplication is by plugging it into something such as the upcoming RetroTink 4K, but if you're going to do that you'd be better off buying a 5X and a Xedusa. For the average consumer, however, I can't think of a much better way to connect your OG Xbox to a modern flat-panel television, it just works that well.

I've been wanting a simple, more affordable HDMI adapter for my Xbox, but definitely didn't want a garbage cable. This is VERY attractive to me! I'll look into it.
Glad to see you covering this. Great stuff!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks Gary! Great video as usual!
Thank you sir, glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching
This is what I will be getting for my OG Xbox.
That doesn’t look bad. I’ve bought 2 other brands and they were fuzzy. This looks sharper. I need this.
I'm intrigued. I have the Chimeric adapter and it's great aside from some noise. Definitely a step up from something like a Pound cable.
i have both chimeric/xbox2hdmi both produce little noise. The only thing that doesnt is makemhz+ if you have revision 1.6 xbox soldering mod is easy even for a beginner like me.
Good to know, thanks for sharing
2:38 Roger Roger lol😆
Recently I pulled my Xbox out of the closet for the first time in 8 years.
Now I connected a Microsoft Xbox component cable to the Xbox, and connected it to an HDMI conversion adapter.
But my 4K monitor only recognizes 480i on the OGXbox, and keeps black out randomly at higher than 480p...
I am fed up with this, so I absolutely needed the Xbox2HDMI.
Maybe next year I will buy it!!!
Awesome review Gary! Can you see the full startup of the Xbox with this dongle?
I have a pound cable and by the time the video is on the screen the startup is 3/4 finished.
I think this depends on your TV and how nice it plays with the HDMI handshake of the adapter. Not all TV's will handle this the same way.
sadly it's not under 50$ anymore. I'm glad i got 2 of those for 31$US each (+shipping of course), back months ago, even though i got the V2, the only difference is a switch on it that temporarily fixed the V1.0 problem while they were doing a new version without the need of a switch.
The Wii2HDMI is like 5 dollars and it’s made life super easy when i was working with the Wii
The electron shepherd one is like $24?
i had to use one years ago cause the tv i had didnt have a hdmi port
Looks like it’s the converter is crushing blacks on your display (Halo gameplay at start of the video and Ninja Gaiden at the end of the video). Is your display set for RGB or YCbCr?
I just received mine! Luckily my OG Xbox still works after all these years, haven’t done anything to it yet. Can it be that there is a slight lag with the Xbox2HDMI converter? Or is that normal for the OG Xbox? I honestly don’t remember. I tried Forza Motorsport 1 and there is a noticeable input lag.
this is the one to get
It's a great performer and very reasonably priced
Going to order mines soon, will it be fine to use with the MCable Gaming edition?
It should work just fine with an m cable
Have you encountered any flickering with some Xbox original games using HDMI adapters? I’m having that issue with some games. Any suggestions?
I have not, sorry
Hi, i bought one for my PAL OG Xbox and it (unfortunately) dont look very good. The image is too blurry. Even by changing all the displays settings on my Xbox or on my TV, it's impossible for me to have what you've got on your screen. I tested it on 2 differents hdmi cable and the result was the same. My TV in a high quality full HD Panasonic so no problem for the TV.
PAL Is a challenge into and unto itself. I honestly don't know how this would work with PAL systems. But reach out to Mike on Twitter, he'd be more than willing to answer your questions I'm sure of that
@@RoXolid Thank you. On another Jesus Metal Rocks video, he spoke about an hdmi cable for OG Xbox and tell that it won't work on PAL system. I thought this adaptor won't be limited too but it is.
I don't have twitter but i'll try to find the information. Thank you.
Hey, the issue is that your Xbox is PAL. Fortunately, using a softmod (done using a game save exploit) or a hardmod (e.g. modchip, TSOP flash, etc) can help you fix this. There is homebrew that you can run to switch your console to NTSC (US/Canada).
The reason is because the original Xbox will only output 480i when in PAL mode. For whatever reason, Microsoft decided to restrict 480p, 720p, and 1080i. When you switch to NTSC (which, btw, won't affect your connection with your TV), you will gain those options in your dashboard settings.
Basically, what's happening right now is that you're just getting a normal 480i signal. This is bad because most Xbox games are 480p, which is significantly better looking. Some are even 720p native, and a few (like Enter the Matrix) can do 1080i.
@@notkyloren Hello my console is NTSC and I modded with Evox so it can play PAL games, so when I play Pal games is my console will be in PAL or NTSC mode?
Just wanted to ask, do your games cut out of signal quite frequently, including during gameplay? I understand the screen might black out when swapping games, but it's doing it during normal gameplay as well.
I have not had that issue
I already have the officially licensed Pound cable, which was pricey enough, costing about the same as this, so how does this compare to the Pound cable, and would it be worth getting, since I already have the Pound cable?
The Pound cable is vastly interior to this! The XBOX2HDMI is more accurate in color, sound, lag, and latency. A definite improvement!
Pound cables are bottom of the barrel. There is nothing worse 🤷🏻♂️
@@wolfgangpuff7030 No, those av2hdmi boxes are worse
Has anyone noticed any faint lines (jail bars) going down the screen while using this device? I tried different TVs, HDMI cables, even got a replacement, but still the same thing. I have an 1.4 Xbox by the way. Could that be a sign that the video capacitors are going bad? I ask this cause I've also noticed some wavy lines going across the screen when using RCA based component to HDMI converters (which is something I didn't experience when I hooked up my PS2 to the same converter).
I have not
Just wanted to inform you, that the "gai" in Ninja Gaiden is pronounced like "guy".😃👍
7:50 had a terrible coach but made the superbowl????🧐
Yes, because he has an amazing defense and Ron Rivers bailed him out throughout the season. Once it was known Lovie was getting rid of Ron the team was never the same
Do you know if it does surround sound well at all? My research shows that they do, their website suggests so as do comments on reddit. I've already got a generic adapter that someone gave me which works fine but only does stereo. Wanting to confirm before pulling the trigger.
I don't know as I don't have a way to test, sorry
I don't know for certain but I'm pretty sure it is, they recently updated these to fix audio issues on some setups
@@daddykarlmarx6183 well I'll let you know as I accidentally ordered it while tyring to find out the price in AUD - it's currently $100 AUD for reference.
8:00 I do not appreciate the Lovie Smith slander.
What slander? He was a terrible head coach
lol, truth!
And the McCaskey's are clueless owners
I feel like kaico labs shouldn't get a bad rep, they're products are solid, better than average. Sony PS1 PS2 Playstation 1 & 2 HDMI Display Adapter is insanely good.
But they don't develop a lot of what they sell! They stand on the shoulders of real developers and steal their work. Google Kaico Mike Chi Retrotink Clone
@@RoXolid Oh. I did not realize, thank you for clarifying. I did not know they were copycatting to that extent.
@@RoXolid I have been watching ton of your videos and have bought a bunch of products based off your reviews and recommendation, I enjoy your insight towards products and giving a fair shake. I bought Tribute64, EON Super64 and will be buying Electron Shepherd Xbox2HDMI adapter once they have it in stock. Thanks for the great content.
@@TripleThreatDX thank you so much for the kind words and good I can help
If it doesn't support Dolby surround it's a deal breaker for me
