    I haven't ridden or worked on a bike in decades. I just got mountain bikes for my daughter and I. We live near the city of Pittsburgh, so the 18 speed is going to come in handy. While the some assembly required for our bikes made it simpler my daughter's bike needed some brake adjustment. I decided to start here then moved into the adjustment video. I want to thank you for the in-depth and perfectly described information that you give. I was able to learn more about our brake assembly, maintenance, and repair. You are AWESOME!

    Was wondering about this for a while. Bought the bike the other day and getting the knowledge in ahead of time. Already knew a good bit,and even work on a few myself as a hobby. This really helped me identify what and how I needed to do things. Tomorrow I'm gonna check what type of brake pads I need and make a decision. Hopefully I won't need some crazy tools for the job. The one thing that might get me are the Allen wrenches,other than that,I should be good.

    Hi. I accidentally got threaded studs for my road brakes. Can I still install these? Is it safe?
    Thank you!

    • @parktool
      @parktool  7 лет назад +1

      It depends upon the design of the brake arm. If the brake washers have full engagement on the arm, it can work. Also, the thread stud tends to take up more room from the convex-concave washer design. Run the narrower spacer inboard. If you get decent clearance as you pull the lever, they can work.

    Hello Park Tool, thanks as always for your resourceful video !
    On your video there seems to be multiple orders of spacers for your threaded stud system : pad-concave-convex-arm-concave-convex-nut or pad-concave-convex-arm-convex-concave-nut. The most common configuration I'm used to is the first one where the brake arm is in contact with the 2 convex spacers. You seem to mostly use the 2nd configuration. Does it matter as long as a convex spacer is coupled with a convex one? Does it change the adjustment possibility? Does it depends on your brake pads? Is there a reason for wanting one or the other?
    Cheers !

    • @parktool
      @parktool  7 лет назад +2

      The convex side of a spacer must face a concave side on another spacer, of course. If you keep convex to concave, and flip that mating 180-degrees, it still works.

    • @parktool

      Well, manufactures prefer you get the replacement pad it was designed for. However, it can be done (for most models, anyway). The wider spacers will likely go outside the arm to simulate the original pads, but see what works in your case.

    HELP! At 4:01, the worst time possible (!), re: correct / incorrect spacer selection, he POINTS THREE times total, to the TWO rim brakes, (but obviously, there’s only 1 on each side). First he SAYS "On this other bike, we have a caliper arm w/ correct and incorrect spacer selection."
    But points to the brake on the video viewers RIGHT FIRST, then points to the opposite side (video viewers LEFT), before finally pointing back (again) to the video viewers RIGHT!
    I can only rely on the video segment that follows: Him working on the video viewers RIGHT - apparently fixing it to make it ideal (as vertical an angle as possible, like on the video viewers LEFT.)
    My thoughts: What the heck is going on here? Maybe a filming complication? Or did he get confused and suffer from one of my below issues? Edit: After going back, I now see it was video editing / timing issue. Thank you Park Tool!
    In addition, I'm a bit confused because my rim brakes have a 'noodle' and look a little different than the first ones ID'd in this video, or the 4 examples in the "ID" video. Aha - Mine look like the example at 4:33.
    My Issues: I have a lifelong personality quirk that causes me to find mistakes in the World. It's a silent curse that often happens on grocery store receipt totals or individual prices. My brain knows ONE or more prices are wrong, but I don't always know the true price. I just know I wouldn't pay X price for something OR, that the total seems higher than anticipated. And, I'm almost 60 years old, and like many of us, I now get confused easily. (Could be a Rx side effect). Then, about 16 months ago, I sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and really get confused easily (From my perspective, "misled" easily), which commonly happens when others, often pros in their field, make a mistake and don't know it (they are human after all) or verbalize their mistake if they are aware. A pro in their field who makes a mistake. Would they like to be offered a correction? My TBI may cause me to forget a word and/or to use a similar, but wrong / not-as-precise word. Aphasia may be the right medical term? Lol What’s your reason(s)?

      Well, last time I replaced my brake pads, I replaced the holders, too. Now I have the Shimano ones with the little fins, as shown in the video at, e.g., 3:34. Even heavily used pads slide out easily: they might need a gentle push with a screwdriver, but nothing dramatic. New pads just slide right in. I strongly recommend them.

    • @parktool
      @parktool  3 года назад +1

      The linear pull (V-brake style) use a pad with a convex and concave washer system to set pad alignment. This requires a long threaded stud in the pad. Most road pads lack this alignment system and should not be used in V-brakes. However, it is often possible to use a pad from a V-brake in a road caliper.
