How did she win? She did though. Love her but seriously she just hits the ball back so many times without injecting more pace and no grants too. Interesting power and strategy by Sloane Stephens well done. Congratulations.
my question as well. stephens is consistent with lot of baseline power and poor movement. i think many top wta players find success with the style(pliskovas, azarenka, mugu). i think i underestimate how relevant that is. their opponents are not running them enough.

Not every tennis player grunts .
Well, grunting and power are not correlated. It's just a bad habit, especially when it is on every shot. As to how she wins, she doesn't miss much, she mixes up spin and has deep placement, both of which often make it hard for an opponent to hurt her. Her lack of a real killer instinct and minimal risk-taking are one reason she's been 4 years without a title, though.
She is painstakingly hard to watch play ! She gets you riled up 😤! But is her own person !
Stephens became more patient and slowly gain her will to win again. Congrats

Sloane could have been a much more accomplished player if she could get outta that counterpuncher mindset. She has the speed and power to blow people off the court but she’s just so content to just get balls back. Look at that 3rd set when she started really hitting the ball.

After watching Doha/Dubai WTA matches, this final looks very lethargic for both players, playing with low energy and unable to inject power in both serves and ground strokes. Maybe, it's the high altitude of Gaudalajara.

People keep on saying how did Sloane win? Sloane isn't the type of player that will constantly barage an opponent with power such as Sabelenka. She is more selective and can inject pace at different times, surprising her opponent. If Sloane can keep consistent in a rally, this tactic can be very troublesome to any opponent.
