  • Replacing the steering column on a 2016 Tesla Model S to fix a broken stalk.
The steering column part fitted to this 2016 vehicle was 1028053-00-A, I fitted a replacement with the exact same part number. The steering wheel fitted to this car is 1005279-00- and airbag module 1022506-00-D
Tesla wanted to fit steering column 1057355-00-B which apparently needs a whole replacement wheel 1022506-00-E.

That was a terrific little video. Very interesting. Stand by for anguished contacts from out-of-warranty Tesla owners . . . Thanks!

Great job. Ridiculous that they don't have or want to give you a spare part. Sounds too much like throwaway engineering.

I think the real reason Tesla didn’t want to provide the new parts required is because their not big supporters of right to repair. Good job Glyn.

Agree, but tesla is actually better than most manufacturers they make all their service manuals a service diag software available to anyone online and its possible to purchase parts direct. However, unlike other manufacturers they have a monopoly on the parts.. toolbox.tesla.com/

Hi Glyn you’ve taped the steering wheel clock thingamatgingy so it wouldn’t spin as described in service manual but how were you sure the replacement mechanism that you’ve bought was in tact? Thanks!

I tested it thoroughly, the tape was just to maintain the orientation

Hi Glyn, I left you a message on twitter it I'm not sure if you saw it. We are currently scoping out research where we'd love to talk to people who have modified their vans like yours. I think you'd be a fantastic person to speak to so please let me know if you'd be interested
