How a Steering Column Works

- Here's how the steering column works to turn the wheels on your car.
The steering column connects the steering wheel to the rack. It also houses the airbag, controls for turn signals, cruise control, audio, wipers, ignition switch and steering lock, all of which are discussed in this video.
The bottom of the steering column is splined where it joins the intermediate steering shaft into the rack. A universal joint allows it to be mounted offset to the rack's pinon centerline.
Further up the shaft, is a collapsible portion that telescopes after a certain amount of force is applied. This prevents the steering wheel from being pushed up into The drivers face during a severe collision.
The steering lock consists of a tab that sticks out and engages a hole on the column, similar to a door lock. The mechanism disengages when a key is inserted and rotated, allowing the wheel to spin freely.
The ignition lock consists of a tumbler, the starter switch, a key detection switch and a lockout solenoid, all to ensure the off, acc, on and start positions of the key work safely.
Next up there's the turn signals, that use a cam-tongue mechanism that sticks into a rotating collar on the shaft. This allows mechanical self cancellation of the turn signal.
Finally there's a clock spring that allows 5 rotations of the steering wheel, while preventing tangling of the airbag and cruise wires. The steering wheel itself is a steel ring padded with colored foam, or is sometimes leather stitched.
This was performed on a 2001 Toyota Corolla. - Авто/Мото
The amount of information you show in less than 9 minutes is spectacular!

I had to log on because it was absolutely necessary to thank you for breaking it down so easily and quickly. This is exactly what I needed to know. Thank you so much.
You are very welcome. Thanks
great video. even as an engineer that specializes structural strength I'm always amazed by the amount of complex mechanisms inside machines we use daily and take for granted. An automobile is made possible by mechanical, structural and electrical engineering combined. Often times it includes computer engineering.
Nice breakdown and explanation. Some thieves trying to steal my airbag broke my ignition switch/cylinder and the security screws that hold it on. Probably used a crowbar. They also removed the electronic switch (held on by two screws) that activates in the starter on the start/on position. I knew nothing about my steering wheel column and ignition until now. Thank you.
Thanks and I hope you get it fixed through insurance, those parts can be costly and on back order.
I didn't have full coverage on a 17 yr old truck. I'll be finding an after market CAT+ Exhaust pipe, and pulling from a junk yard or eBay an Ignition Switch/cylinder or the whole steering column if I can find it
Hello from 2022. A burglar (leaning on the steering wheel for balance?) broke my steering column. I had bits and bobs lying around and didn't know what was broken. I did test the key and found I couldn't turn the key in the ignition. I now know the bits and bobs were the solenoid/housing so this was very helpful and informative for me. Thanks for making this video.
As usual...outstanding. Not sure how this video got missed? Another WOW moment. Thank you!
This video is so cool because you took the time to teach, to inform others. Thank You.

Never seen someone collapsing a collapsible steering. Nice.
Well now you've seen it in action
Man loved your video, it helped me with assignment👏
Really? What was your assignment?
@@speedkar99 i had an assignment, i which i have to explain steering lock mechanism and i was searching all the web but didn't got it. Then i saw your video, you had disassembled whole steering assembly. That helped me 🙌
Wow, you’re a genius my friend!

Best video i've ever seen on youtube
Thanks, I hope to make another one on a tilt column soon.
What a great set of videos. Did you buy this Toyota just to angle grinder it to oblivion or did you drive it previously?
I bought this car for learning purposes and I've learned so much from it!
Good work
Hi, I want to replace the steering column of my toyota corolla E120 D-4D (2002) which has NO telescopic adjustment of the steering wheel and I want to use a steering column from the later facelift model that has the telescopic adjustment. Do you know by chance if their steering columns are compatible? Can it be done?
Most impresive!
Brilliant video...
Excellent video really detailed

Yur videos r lik god made videos... Good work keep digging..
+TheZoomel glad you enjoy them!
The steering column u joints are very important because they're mostly there for collision safety. Without the u joints in a front end collision the steering column would shoot past the steering wheel and impale the driver. The ujoints are designed to break.
+LobbyDIY agreed, though as you saw in the video the steering column itself also collapses.
A superbd video. I am hearing a 'clunk' sound when I rotate my steering wheel all the way to the left or right in my 2004 Toyota Corolla. I still have steering control of my vehicle. Should I be concerned? I will check under my hood today for loose components there. My braking works fine. Thanks for any information.
Peace.
Check the strut mounts and steering intermediate shaft
Very informatibe video. One in a million.
Glad you liked it!
Hi, I am from India. Can you please do a video on collapsible pedals. Any pedals for that matter will be great
How are the security screws removed? I need to get to the ignition lock cylinder cam shaft on a '98 Lexus LS400. I want to take the ignition cylinder off the steering column. Thx.
+Fiona Marissa punch and hammer
speedkar99 Once the security screws are removed with a punch and a hammer as you suggested, could the same ones be reused or a new one is required? Btw, are they extremely challenging to remove?
Also. Great Video
Thx
You are great..!
Thanks
1)Is it possible to remove the steering column assembly without dismantling the steering wheel and the air bag, so that the whole assembly can be removed as one unit?
2) I'm able to turn the car off and remove the key while the transmission is not in the park gear. Is it just the solenoid you mentioned in the video that needs to be replaced, and can it be purchased by itself? What is the exact name of that solenoid?
Thank you very much!
Yes the whole thing can be removed as a unit. As long as you have access to the 4 bolts
nice video my friend. I have a question... it is possible to fix the clock spring ??? it is possible to solder the looooooooooong cable??? or that solder would act as a resistance... thank u for ur time and greetings from Perú
+Fernando MinAnd yes but solder should hold up to The flexing of the spiral
speedkar99 thank you for ur answer my friend!!! 🖒🖒🖒
Fully detailed video
Thanks
Awesome

My teacher wasn't explaining this properly but you did, thank you.

Speedkar99, I just have a few questions. What do you with all the junk you take off this Corolla? How are you disposing of it?
+mrjost55 Scrap metal guys are like hawks in my neighborhood. I only have to put it at my curbside and ItS gone by the time I get back inside my house.
such extreme complexity to the majority of components, but a necessary function
so, were in the process of sending our toyota carina cdx e 1996 column to be converted to electric power steering. however its been asked for the "motor" to be marked on the column where it was. and yet even toyota doesnt understand what this motor is. would this motor infact be the power steering pump?
well done engineer
Thanks 😊
Can you help me out .2006 GMC Sierra pickup when I'm truning left my steering locks up and I have to forset to straighten it out .it feels like something in the steering shaft binding and makes a Cracking sound .any ideas thanks 👍🇨🇦
Superb
Very impressive! But he only took ten seconds for the exact Steering Column
+Charles Fu Yep, short and to the point
Please help! Just replaced a steering column. Transferred all old parts onto the new steering column...yet, now the steering lock isn't engaging at all. Also, the steering wheel endlessly turns in either direction (i.e., there isn't any resistance when turning... steering wheel will allow wheels/tires to continue turning beyond what they should). Any ideas on what the issue might be? Thank you!
simply best.
+Bennett Hubert amazing
So I was changing the driver window regulator today.
The bolts that hold the glass to the regulator stripped and it now spins.
I called 5 dealers and checked online and can't find them. :/
On this 1997 Lexus es300, when you mount the glass to the regulator it had a lot of play in all three fasteners. How does one align it perfect.
I am lost and need help.
Thank you
I tried many different ways and adjustments, but when I tested it with a spray bottle, water gets in. :/ any one ever changed one on a 1997 Lexus es300.
This car has no upper door support. It is only the glass that closes.
+Martin Evan Hmn I'm not familiar with the power regulator, your best bet might be junkyard
speedkar99 If you ever come across it, it is very difficult to alright the bolts just right. There is so much play yo deal with.
I went to my local junk yard and no luck. This junk yard could be the worst junk yard in the world. The owner there said "we don't sell the bolts, you would need to buy the whole door" I was shocked and left never going back.
I called all the dealers in Atlanta and every single one hit me with " you can't get the bolts" which you can. I found them online.
But Thank you for your reply.
Lexus is easy to work on. But on this es300s, maybe others, when you install a window regular there is so much room to play to set the window glass just right.
Some mechanic hammered the metal where the sensor nut lay (0:45) and caused the steering wheel to be stiff and grind everytime against the plastic it sits on. Perhaps the collapsible steering column got a bit shorter or moved ? is there a way to undo this ?
Once it's collapsed there's no easy way to reuse it
I have noise coming from the steering column on my corsa C, steering rack is new so it's not it, is the column repairable or need to get a new one?
I replace a blower motor on nissan versa and disconnected the steering shaft from the column with the wheels turned now steering wheel is off center about half way, i cant find any videos to fix this, is there anything i can do to fix it
My 1994 Toyota Camry steering wheel goes free spinning if I hit a bump.I can pull on the wheel and it also just free spins.I can kinda wiggle the wheel and feel a short move forward then steering returns. The steering wheel will not be centered anymore.I can point the wheels straight ,then pull on the steering wheel it moves towards me Maybe a inch. Now it free spins,I put it straight and push forward to engage the wheel again.Any idea what is going on.Feels like it's coming off a spline fitting or something.
very detailed video. t.y
Welcome
Is it possible to fix the thudding noise from the steering column while the car moves through some rough patches. Since it is gonna cost a fortune to replace the steering column itself... Wud appreciate ur help
+augustine salhotra thudding or creaking?
its kinda rattle sound from the steering column. actually I took experts advice earlier and got the steering rack replaced, but the problem persists sir. then they told me that its from inside the car under the steering wheel. EPS needs to be replaced too. but I am not convinced.
I am having a very similar problem. Some rattling from steering column when hitting bumps. Turning the wheel a few inches side to side also reveals some noises. Local dealer is recommending replacing the entire column which is expensive. Not sure if it needs to be done.
Once the security shear bolts are removed with a punch & a hammer:
1) Could the same ones be reused to reinstall or are new ones required?
2) To install the shear security bolts, is the method also to use a punch & a hammer, but in a clockwise direction?
3) To install the security shear bolts, alternatively, is it possible to use an ordinary bolt where a socket & ratchet could be used?
4) Why are those security shear bolts used instead of ordinary bolts?
Thank you very much!
They can be reused. They're there for security...to slow down someone trying to hotwire the car. Of course since your doing this to your own car you can take your time, right 😉
The security shear bolts are "one-time use" and are fitted like regular bolts (clockwise rotation), the head is designed to break off when tightened with the prescribed amount of force. They are used as an added security feature to deter thieves from tampering with the cylinder assembly.....Yes, it is possible to use regular bolts but I would suggest sticking to the shear bolts.
Does accident to tire affect the steering column?
I have a 99 s10 some broke my lock housing and black gear inside housing I have it off but can't find what the black gear wheel like thing is called
Aww sorry to hear that
Fantastic, only talk about whats important
+Anthony Wiley Short and sweet is how it should be
Hello @speedkar99 . I have Lexus GX470 2004 just recently bought at auction. It is clean car , running with no damage history. When I get to pick up the car , I detected that steering wheel is not turning the wheels. It is free soft turning either side with no respond from tires. But if I remove key 🔑, it is locking the steering wheel. It feels like steering wheel has been unbolted from joint or something. Also air bag sign on and when I turn steering wheel I can feel that wires inside steering wheel is ripped off. Can you please tell me what it may be before I disassemble all front of the car? Thanks
You have to reconnect the steering shaft and make sure it's in correct alignment. You'll also need a new clock spring.
speedkar99 thanks! I found that my clock spring is damaged. All buttons are not working on the steering wheel, so it is definitely clock springs issue. And I saw that steering rod is playing free . Thanks again!
Please make a video on Electric steering wheel.I wanna see torque sensors and other stuff that guide assisting motor.
Yes I have an electric steering rack video
