    Few things to consider here:
    a) Muse dont really do crowd interaction eg talking to the crow because it's just not their style. They even mentioned it in some interviews that they felt it was embarrassing/cringe to do so. 95% of the time they dont talk at all in between the songs. All you get during live concert is a non-stop full of energy life performance that worth every penny of your ticket.
    b) But only recently for some of the songs they did it as it fits to do so. Eg new version of Starlight live being played with Matt on vocal (+interacting with the crowd) without playing the guitar. Me as an old fan really hate it as it felt too pop.
    c) Most of the Muse songs are way way better off without the interaction with crowd. My point is it depends on the atmosphere of the songs/music and the messages they intend to deliver within the songs. I get it if it's Panic Station but the interaction with crowd in B&H is a big no bro.
Anw thanks for the honest opinion and I respect it.

Personally, I think bands that have lots of crowd interaction, or all the other things David wants, are normally just covering up their lack of back catalogue to play - or the lack of songs they are actually any good at playing live. Muse are known for their stage shows - you can’t take one song from a set list of 20/25 songs and give an opinion on their live offering as a whole. Also, they can’t go crazy with the crowd on every song - I was at this gig and was lucky enough to see them play Unintended, however, I can’t say I was disappointed that Matt Bellamy didn’t jump into the crowd when playing it, and that’s because that song doesn’t call for it - it was beautiful to see him stood there playing it on acoustic guitar! (So I guess I’m saying there are exceptions, even to your preferred stage show) Watch the Simulation Theory film and then tell us they don’t put on a show!! Lacklustre - behave! Music is king and they are in the top 3 bands in the world for musicianship and live production - they haven’t won as many best live act awards for no reason!!

Generally disagree with his take here. There’s a lot more to live performance than a lot of pyro and holding the mic out to the crowd. And This song is not just played as it is in the studio version - there’s a section added here just for the live performance that’s not even in the original. How does that not get brownie points for performance. I think that this goes pretty hard...and I’m sure there was plenty of fireworks throughout the whole show, not every song should be judged on its inclusion or lack thereof.
Surely live performance means how it’s sang/played too...how many rock bands are busting out classical piano solos mid song and hitting notes like those all night. Quite a harsh review on a pretty stellar job by muse. But I usually like David’s takes. Think he just made his mind up early on this - 30 seconds in and he seemed sold on his opinion.

I think there is a disconnect, I respect your opinion, but I do not give a rats ass how a band interacts with the crowd, all that matters is the standard and quality of how they play live, that's what live music is about, I think crowd interaction, talking before the song, production gadgets, are all a way for a bad band to hide behind, all that matters is how good you are at playing your instruments and singing. Everything else is irrelevant, in my opinion. I guess to you, and others, you don't take account of how well they transfer the studio song to a live rendition?

I agree. I don't care how often a band talks to the crowd before a song, how often they get the crowd to clap along, how much pyro they have, etc. If they're playing the song well and with energy (which I'd say Muse is definitely doing here) then the band is putting on a great show. I think all that other stuff is just superficial elements bands that can't play well like to hide behind to mask their subpar playing. If bands do add them to their shows, cool, but are they necessary? Not really.

To be fair, David was not at this concert. All he has to go by is this video. The stage design translated poorly to video for me. Surely it was amazing if you were there. But the video does not capture the nostalgia your memories do.

I usually love your reactions, whether negative or positive, but I'm not really understanding what you want the band to do to "blow you away." The song being like 45 seconds in, I'm not sure ANY performance of a song is going to immediately blow you away. That's some pretty lofty expectations. Not everyone is going to react to songs the same way, so obviously Muse fans are going to immediately be engaged, but I'm struggling to understand your criteria for live performances where the lights and pyro matter more than the band's musicianship. In order to judge a live performance, you have to take into account how well a band plays a song--not the song itself--but their musicianship. You don't really do that here. You're focused on lights, and pyro, and the crowd clapping, which to me is pretty irrelevant if the band is killing the playing of the song. Nonetheless, appreciate what you do.

Muse interacts with the crowd in more specific situations. That's why there are "Muse by request" shows and other shows for that. And honestly? I've never seen anyone complain about them. These are shows of pure energy, it's not their style to interrupt to talk or point the microphone at the audience, for example.

I've seen many bands live and it's true that Muse are the ones that interact the least with the crowd, but that's just their style. Even with little to no crowd interaction they still manage to win best live act pretty much every year, and people leave the concert saying they're the best band they've seen. I couldn't care less if they talk to the crowd or not. They're incredible musicians and Matt's got a huge stage presence even though he's shy and awkward off stage.

I can't speak for everyone but personally I think you missed the point. Don't get me wrong, your opinion is as valid as everyone else's and I love your videos specially because you are hard to impress sometimes, I respect that. But i'm convinced that when people requested to watch the live version didn't mean that the interaction with the crowd would blow your mind, and everyone who knows Muse knows that. Muse shows don't include "woooaaa woooaaa", clapping or talking to the crowd, but a unstoppable chain of energy and amazing songs. What people meant was simply that their live versions sound much better than the studio versions, and you don't seem to get that. You proved that when you said you heard no deviations from the studio version right after a bridge three times longer than in the studio song hahaha that's Muse's interaction with the crowd: improving their own songs and surprising people with their own songs. If people wanted to blow your mind with production and interaction with the crowd they'd request "mercy" or any intro or any show, there' are plenty of muse shows that"d blow your mind. But that's not the kind of mindblowing that people requested, they wanted to show you an improved version of a magnificent song played like no one else can.
Once again, as a musician I LOVE your reviews! This is just my opinion!

I think there is more to a performance that this definition but at the same time, I totally respect this view. I was at Glastonbury (2002?) watching Stereophonics headline the main stage and I walked away after 5 songs as I could have just listened to the CD - the performance was note perfect, but there was nothing either audibly or visually extra. For some people, a perfect reproduction of the CD in a live setting would be a good performance, a sign of technical proficiency by the band and sound engineers, but it doesn't do it for me, so I left and I saw Ozomatli on the Jazz Stage who were hugely entertaining, and took audience interaction to a whole new level - I have no idea if there were any bad notes, I was having too much fun to care.
This is a good performance, but I will agree about the lack of crowd interaction and there being better performances by Muse. However, I think there is more audibly in this, the sound is great, it seems a little heavier than the studio version, the guitar riff before the piano was different and much longer, the end of the piano section was audibly more dramatic as well as visually. Now, do you have to be a Muse nerd to notice those things? I don't think so, but its probably fair to argue that you do have to be reasonably familiar with the song. For people familiar, these, arguably smaller, changeups and technical flourishes can surprise and delight and make a good performance great. The stage set looks great too, maybe this suffers a little for appearing to still be daylight so you don't get full production value from the stage lighting, and while the interactive energy wasn't there, it did look like the band very much were, they were not just going through the motions, and as I've said, it sounded great too (and I've also seen performances from other bands with crown interaction and energy but a sucky sound, either because the mix was bad or because they just didn't play/sing that well and that doesn't help).
Anyway, respect your opinion as always, and I'll be honest, after this and the Stockholm syndrome, I wouldn't blame you if you said no to these re-reaction requests from here on.
A very different performances for the lengthy list (no I don't expect your mind to be blown, or 10/10's, it's not even rock/guitar focused music, you might hate it, but I promise you will see a hardworking band engaged with their audience):

I have been to many concerts and not once have I looked at the stage and thought " wow they really aren't moving around enough". Honestly, I really don't care at all. I go to a concert to see how well they can play the songs live; it's an audio experience, not a visual one. A lot of the prancing about stage that you enjoy can come across as very disingenuous to me, borderline cringe worthy. It often feels fake and forced. This is a live performance of music, not a play. Only the sound should matter IMO. Look at the size of that stadium. How many of those people in the back can even see the stage?
I don't think it makes any sense whatsoever when you say it's not about the song. It's ONLY about the song and how well it sounds. Again, music, not theatre.

David's not going anywhere, so maybe if people stop requesting duplicate reviews (that aren't even great versions, SS and B&H from HAARP don't hold a candle to Glastonbury 2004) he won't be uptight about Muse.

Taking into account how well musicians played a song live is a pretty integral part of judging a live performance, so I think people just find it odd that his criteria are based almost solely on visuals.

Bands doing live performances shouldn't do alot of crowd interaction in my opinion, at end of the day they are there to play their songs live, I would rather they put all their effort into playing the music well than interacting with crowds, and you are more likely to get a better performance if they just play rather than distract themselves with crowd.

Oh, this is the song creating the tirade about stage presence I had to go through in newer video?
Personally I don't feel this song needs any of that - it just won't play along with the lyrics and theme. It feels energetic with a feeling of push. If you already listened to the song, it won't bring you anything new (well, apart from the added middle part).
EDIT: Plus one noteworthy thing is - it's ONE song from a hour and three quaters long GIG. We're looking at a single piece, because we don't react to a whole gig, but that means it's still cut out of the whole experience. For Muse, I think that will take part of "magic". Nowhere near as if you cut a song from The Wall gig, where you lose story, but still a part of experience as a whole.
I agree if people say "this will strip all your clothes off of you" it will be underwhelming unless you really love the song. Personally I like Muse live better than their studio versions, which are sometimes kinda overproduced to my taste. However they are already capable studio "musicians" which makes the live performance only slightly better. It won't make it more charming than it already was.
    EDIT2:
Oh, speaking about (stage) production and presence - man, you are just creating the confusion of how people don't undestand what you want yourself - I noticed that in more videos. People are stupid (hello), we can't read minds, sometimes our imagination is too subjugated that we don't have an idea what would be a good move... You have the stage (pun intended) to teach us and get to know you, because in the end it's your opinion.

I'd say that attempting to only review a live performance by ignoring the quality of the individual instrumental performances, the vocals and the overall sound of the song is like a movie critic trying to review a film whilst blindfolded. Yes, obviously it would be a shame if the dialogue and sound design of the movie is crap, but then again that is not how the media is intended to be experienced. This is by no means my favourite muse song or even my favourite live performance of it, but I think that when people ask you to *listen* to a different version, the intent is that you will compare them in full. I agree with a lot of what you're saying, but I just think that an adjustment would please both you and the fans wanting the reaction more.

I am sad, not because of your reaction, but because people are requesting duplicates that are not great live versions. I do LIKE this version, but the stage setup translated awfully to video, and the editing did not help. Even the audio mix is off on HAARP (the dvd this came from, as well as the other duplicate muse song you reviewed, Stockholm Syndrome).
I know you always get "but have you heard THIS version blah blah blah", but it's because some requests are disappointing when there are better examples.
How could these Muse fans suggest those two songs from HAARP and not Glastonbury 2004?
Sorry, I am annoyed with the request, not your reaction.

Personally, I hate Matt's guitar tone from the Absolution tour--it's tinny and hollow sounding. I much prefer his guitar tone from OoS and then BH&R on. And the piano he used on this tour and subsequent tours is so much more full and rich than the keyboards he was using on the Absolution tour. Matt may not be acting like a lunatic on stage like he was in prior years, but ultimately, who cares? I care about the musicianship, not whether the frontman is going wild on stage.

All the recordings from this show in my opinion are some of their worst. Like it's at such a weird point for the band where from albums 1-3 they were playing smaller stages and then from 5 onwards it's all about the show ( I mean if you see some of the stuff from the latest simulation theory tours it's insane the among of stage production there is) but this being the tour for the 4th album I believe just sits in this weird middle ground where they are tryna become all about the show but aren't quite there yet so it just feels disconnected. Plus the vocals and general sound from the recordings of this show are pretty meh in comparison to others. I believe the live Stockholm syndrome one you done was from this and I don't think you were a huge fan (if I remember correctly).
