I’m using all set - mixing smaller batches - measuring out the powder by weight and adding recommended water ratio- this is for laying the tiles but it is coming out a little too thick - can you confirm the max water ratio per pound for wall tile

I got the Ditra installed pretty much on point on concrete, I used UNMODIFIED Homedepot bought thinset, but Im still confused if I needed a MODIFIED thinset for my ceramic 12 x 24 tile over Ditra since it is considered LFT. So my question is, Should I resort to modified thinset formulated for Large Format? I know you recommend Schluter AllSet but it is somewhat hard to come by plus it is more expensive...

I am installing tile in a bedroom on a wood floor. I bought the ditra rolls to install on the wood, I thought the recommendation is to use the schluter all set or an unmodified thinset at ANSI A118.1. your video states to use a modified thinset at ANSI 118.11. what is the correct thinset to use to install the ditra to wood floor. is it modified or unmodified? Also do i use modified or unmodified to install tiles on the ditra?

Hi Thomas, thank you for your questions. The correct thin-set to use to install the DITRA over wood is ALL-SET, FAST-SET, or modified thin-set mortar. To install the tiles over the DITRA, SET, ALL-SET, FAST-SET, or unmodified thin-set mortar is to be used. Hope this helps!

In your video around the 2:30 mark, you talk about Set being used for DITRA on concrete or gypsum floor leveler. It is my understanding that this will not work on gypsum without the use of a primer. I have seen systemic failure on projects where a Schluter thin set was used on gypsum without a primer on the gypsum leveler first. It is important that you discuss the use of primers on gypsum poured floors before using a thinset.

Hi Ryan, You are correct. We actually address this in our DITRA handbook: since DITRA and DITRA-XL must bond to the gypsum underlayment, follow gypsum manufacturer’s recommendations regarding primers and/or special surface preparation before installing DITRA and DITRA-XL. Schluter®-PRIMER-U is suitable for use over gypsum underlayment. Refer to the Schluter®-PRIMER-U data sheet for more information.

i''ve got my kerdi-board installed and just need to fill the gaps with schluter all-set and kerdiband. it's for a van conversion. is schluter all-set an advisable thinset for a mobile setting? also, can i glue up FRP board over the completed kerdi board / band? if so, any particular glue?

Hi there! Such an interesting project! While our Handbooks don't cover installations in vans, perhaps our customer service team can help you out. They can be reached on: 800-472-4588 (US) or 800-667-8746 (CA). Best of luck!

Which mortar (modified or unmodified) should be used when embedding a Kerdi membrane to drywall (I assume unmodified). I know All-set works, but which alternatives can also be used?)

Hi there! You can use ALL-SET, FAST-SET (both modified) or SET (unmodified). If using a brand other than Schluter, please use unmodified. Thanks!

The mixing instructions say for 50 pound, 7.5 - 8.5 quarts of H2o for membrane, 5.5 - 6.5 quarts for tile. The tray has membrane on top, but the mortar would be placed on the bottom where it is all polystyrene, zero membrane. Nowhere would the mortar touch membrane on tray. When installing tray and curb, should I use the membrane or tile ratio of adding water?

Hi Stanley. The purpose of the thin-set mortar under the tray is to bed and support the tray only so it is not as critical. Either ratio would work, but a stiffer mix like is done for tile is preferred. Thanks!
