Water ratio has gone up since this video. You may have a comment that has covered this somewhere. I just wanted to put the info here. I would give current values but wouldn’t want this to change since I input so check their site, it’s pretty informative.
I love the idea of one thinset for all. Makes sense! You are indicating that the pot-life of ALL SET is 2-4 hours. When I currently use thinset now I occasionally remix (fluff up) the batch so that it spreads in an easy manor. Is it ok to do this with the ALL SET?
I don't want to use an entire bag at once, and in the video you said the All Set pot life is 20 minutes, not 2-4 hours. So if I'd rather work in smaller batches, is there a table that shows the ratios that can be used for smaller amounts?
Can you please do an update on the video you had on the corner of the tub with the leak you had but put kurdi board! I’m debating on doing this. Had a new bathroom but contractor doesn’t wanna fix it. I was going to follow your steps but nervous it won’t work. You kept saying this is an experiment. Thank you!
Hi Jeff, sorry, one more question. Schluter video says pot life Is 2-4 hours for schluter set. You say open time is 20 minutes. Am I missing something?
I’m confused. I’m about to do my first tiling project. 12x24 porcelain tile on Ditra Heat on concrete. Should I use set or all set? My understanding is unmodified (set) is appropriate for concrete. Would all set be as good, better, or should I use set??
All-Set is my go to thinset since last year. I had the misfortune of having to pull off one of my 12x24 tiles doing a shower recently and man it was hard work getting that tile off.
Home Repair Tutor Not really, I just try to load the walls with just enough thinset to cover with tile in about 15-20 minutes, or it’s gotta come back off the wall and re-troweled on. Here in Oregon it’s typically cooler so it doesn’t seem to be much of an issue with flashing. It does seem to be a bit sticky which makes back buttering a bit more difficult, but that has not affected me really; I’m highly confident that once my tile goes on it’s there for good with this stuff.
Great video but let pose another question to you. If I roller redgard or aquaban or ardex onto my hardibacker board and make it imperious to water then install porcelain or ceramic tile using modified thinset which is recommended haven't i just done the same thing that Shuluter says not to because of drying issues?? If I read it right modified thinset is the way to go because of its bonding strength however i just now sandwiched it in between two imperious surfaces reducing its drying ability
We just did our first ever application of the Kerdi membrane. We used the Schluter Set unmodified thinset. We ran out of time before we could complete the job. Now we need to purchase another bag of the Schluter set unmodified thinset. I happen to have a bag of Schluter All Set modified thinset. Can I use that to finish the job or stick with the Schluter Set unmodified thinset?
I'm installing the system over a existing fiberglass exterior balcony, the reason for use is for crack control, I used the all set material and I'm finding release and some separation over time. The rep explained they have no specs on doing this. Help so there is no fail. Thanks
Jeff. I've read the Schluter warranty. Two things to note: I'm not seeing a "lifetime" warranty, only a 10 yr. Also, it does not appear to require the use of Schluter made thinset, only thinset products that comply with the ANSI standard. Am I not looking in the right place?
Per schlute instructions all set for membrane installation the 5h3 water ratio is 7.5 - 8.5 and for tiles 5.5 - 6.5. But you saying is 6.5. so what s the water ratio should i choose for schluter shower kit installation.
Use the membrane water ratio, this video is several years old so things can change over time but the more water the better to allow the tray to set and for the KERDI-BAND to bond properly
How about with Kerdi-band? Can you use All Set with it for covering screws and seams? Also, what size trowel notch would you recommend with large format 12x24 in. porcelain tile on Kerdiboard wall?
Yes, ALL-SET can be used with any Schluter system and for setting tile. We've used 1/4"x3/8" and 1/2"x1/2" square notched trowels for 12x24 inch porcelain tile. Also, it's best to back butter the tile and have it 95% covered in thin-set and use directional troweling on the wall, meaning all the trowel ridges face the same direction
Hello, Would you use the White All set to lay White Thassos marble on the kerdi board and Ditra? I have a job coming up and just want to confirm. Im a Schluter installer, and schluter will not give me a strait answer on this. Would appreciate your help.
we don't like using marble period due to discoloration from iron deposits. Very surprised Schluter wouldn't comment on the installation but we recommend using white thin-set to avoid discoloration due to the gray pigment
Sal mentions to use unmodified thinset between the ditra and tile but modified on wood floor before laying ditra. Hoping it's true that we can use all set on literally everything!! Thanks for the video. Motivating me to do my first install!
+Manny Lidie Sal is definitely correct, if you're using a thin-set other than Schluter's its modified between the subfloor and DITRA, and unmodified between tile and DITRA. ALL SET also provides a lifetime warranty 👍
Hi thanks for the video, very informative. I am living in the UK and using the Schluter ditra and kerdi band in my bathroom. I have a Maxxus plastic wet room tray which is very tough and solid. I am wondering what I should use to bond kerdi band and or membrane to the plastic wet room tray? I have been told to use an epoxy tile adhesive?
I find it hard to believe that other modified thinset won't work. I get the warranty issue with using only their thinset in order to validate their product. But only using their brand sounds like a product promotion. If i understand this is other modified will work but invalidates the warranty. Shuluter doesn't sell allset in a big box retailer near me. I love to see someone test a membrane/ ditra with a big box retailer modified thinset and compare the results. I bet there's no difference in performance
Hi Jeff, I’m planning a full Kerdi install, so thanks for all the tips and tricks (and letting us know there is a Kerdi rep to contact.) one question though.....I’ve watched tens of videos (and called schluter too to confirm) and was always told modified for under my Ditra XL and us modified for all floor and wall tile. This video says the opposite, and you suggest modified for all. I have already purchased all my mortar and am now panicking . Will schluter set (unmodified ) be adequate for my 13x 24 wall and floor tiles?
Home Repair Tutor question : CAN I use a part of the bag ?? I do not need a full bag for the part I have to do tonight . Finally :there are some videos out there showing that at the corner walls ( like you do at the end for the ceiling) is NOT waterproof ...? THANK YOU AGAIN!
@@ikust007 yes, you can use half a bag but be sure to still adhere to Schluter's water ration recommendations and mix properly. All seams and screws/washers need to be waterproofed using KERDI-BAND. Is that what you're talking about or the transition at the ceiling?
Home Repair Tutor I must say that I am rarely clear so ... you answered pretty well;) For the 1 st question it was about putting my Kerdi Band on my Kerdi board, and I will protect the screws/washers with the patches. The 2nd question is in relation with the junction from the e vertical Keri board to the ceiling (gypsum). I thought of putting a Kerdi Band but as you mentioned , not water will ever go at the height . I would prefer (easier...) to put a bead of Kerdi Fix at the junction , using it as a sealer (like a silicone), but not sure anymore if it is good enough ?? Thank you so much
WOW! They were always picky about the thinset you use, it's about time they gave us theirs haha! But modified on an uncoupling membrane? Seems sort of redundant... I would like to hear them explain that haha. Great video though! Thanks for the sneak peak!
+DesignIY yah it's s good thing for the warranty and eliminates all those thin-set questions. I asked about the modified with tile setting and how it was described was that Schluter's formulation was specifically made to work with their products. On the other hand, they can't warranty other thin-sets because they don't know the components. ALL-SET is definitely my choice, and not just because the name implies it's intended purpose!
+Danny Albeck our local tile place had some but I think those were limited demo samples. Schluter has an authorized dealer search on their site www.schluter.com/schluter-us/en_US/store-finder Let me know if you find some 👍
Thanks for the fast response. All of the results seem to be smaller shops, so I will have to check it out. Was wondering if Home Depot or Lowes would carry it.
Yeah starting to notice (after I had already signed up for a Lowes CC) that I am preferring the selection over at Home Depot as far as big box stores are concerned anyway.
Do you have any recommended videos that show what to do when the bathroom floor is a but unlevel. I just exposed the underlayment to my bathroom yesterday and I found that from the center of the room toward a wall where the bathtub is on the floor slopes down slightly. Will the thinset I lay under the ditra level it out for me?
Looks to drop about 1/8 - 3/16 over a 16in run. After the 16 inch that tub will be there so i'm thinking that tub is a bit more forgiving and I can correct that will shims?
+Nelson Custodio you'll want to level that as much as possible so that the tub drains properly. 1/8" isn't terrible but it is over 16 inches. Does the tub require a mortar bed? That actually will help
Home Repair Tutor the tub does not require mortar. Should I be concerned about to slope as it relates to the tile? I'm laying 6x32 inch tile. Should I buy self leveling compound?

Can I mix half a bag of the All Set like other thinsets? I imagine just cut the water in half as sell, but does the time of mixing change?
ratio for all-set to set membrane is 7.5 to 8.5 qts per bag according to the instructions
Yeah, he got that one wrong...
So i need to spend a total of 18 minutes mixing one bucket of thinset? That would be great if i charged by the hour. But not so good otherwise.
Per schlute instructions all set for membrane installation the 5h3 water ratio is 7.5 - 8.5 and for tiles 5.5 - 6.5.

It is suitable for large format tiles. The mixing directions are very important, be sure to follow them closely.
Yes
How about if you only want to mix a 1/4 or half a bag for smaller projects? Do the same mixing times apply?

Same mixing times. Only water and powder amount changes.

Ditra on Concrete Substrates require us to install using Unmodified. Does Schluter allow us to use All Set on Concrete too?
+Spiny Norman from what I've read the answer is yes. The only substrate that Schluter doesn't recommend for ALL-SET and Schluter SET is vinyl flooring
+Home Repair Tutor What evil person would install on top of Vinyl Flooring?
Modified takes extended set time when sandwiched between two membranes that don't breathe
Would these work successfully on the Wedi substrate, or should they be used primarily for Schluter installations?
+Ken Stevens used primarily for Schluter, we haven't tested them with Wedi
