Burns told Cannibal Corpse to kiss his fucking ass and “mix their OWN goddamned record” one day when he was stressing out and the Cannibal guys (super young , green, overly enthusiastic, and asking too many questions in their loud Buffalo accents) put him over the edge!!! (LMFAO!!! Hope you read this , Scott, that part of the CC documentary still puts me on the floor!!!) You could tell how hard Sean's death affected Scott, it is an absolute shock and a loss to the world of a world class musician. He is our Neil Peart. Had no idea Mike Smith went by Smittie, that is hysterical, it's great you guys were able to get Scott, last thing he was in was Cannibal's Centuries of torment.

You can also hear the pain when he discusses his regrets (Exhorder, Napalm). This man defined the sound of a genre of music for a decade, then packed it in and created a career for himself in a completely different world. Man is a genius and a gentleman.

@@corycourtney8923 I hate the revisionism towards his production, the push of the ideology of black metal, especially the no mosh no core no fun no trend mindset. I love both black and death metal, but Scott's productions created an atmosphere both welcoming and hostile. You had to ingratiate yourself within this music and I love that.

@@TheGreatBaronOBeefDip It's funny to me that critics of his production would claim his work was "over-produced". Before Scott, these bands and this style of music weren't really produced at all. No one understood how to make this music sound like it does in the room until people like Scott came along. Also, if the bands came to him for that sound, how can anyone blame him for doing the job?

I had already thought of them as that to begin with (up to Arise). Then I also heard Max refer to his music as death/thrash on a old live recording. It’s on the 2020 BTR reissue (one of the bonus live tracks)

I guess it’s Max’s somewhat guttural vocal style (even actual death metal bands have varying extremes), and you can hear it in some of the riffs like “Primitive Future”. Max was a big fan of Death and Possessed back then. I can hear how they influenced bands like Malevolent Creation (whose first album came out in 1991).

Damn, only half way through this awesome interview but really loving this. Scott's from a different era of producers, his body of work is stunning. I dig a lot of new heavy music, but exactly the sound imperfection he's talking about makes his work more brutal, organic, authentic. Like famous philosopher Žižek once said: "You can never fall in love with a perfect person..." And that's exactly why I can admire the new sound production being all in levels and clean... But my heart is where little imperfections make the heavy groove that's just perfect. And timeless ! Thank you Scott for everything. Ordered your book awhile ago, still waiting on it 👊😎

You know, even there are lots of death metal bands nowadays, but everytime I find myself that lots of modern music lack something, even it feels repetitive. Production is good, but there is no something unique. But with Scott Burns, I've always have quite positive feeling to that oldschool vibe. It sounds different and it has something unique. I don't know, why Scott said that he sees mistakes made on the records. In reality it doesn't even matter, because he captured the main thing about the music, because it has something unique, that makes you getting back to old stuff. It touches you in a good way. It has something alive, not something constructed in a way to sound always the same. I think Scott should be proud of everything he has done. And if hees some imperfections there, it doesn't matter, really. What matters the most is those records are still alive. And that's the main point!

Still from France with not a perfect english, but I’ve understand the most and even if i’m only 28 i’m a huge fan of Scott Burns productions and we all have to say that his work is absolutely legendary. Plus, this guy is humble and looks very simple. Still a very good interview guys. You know i’m so sad not to be 20 yo on 90´s to know that period at its beginnings. When people ask me why i listen Death Metal i always say that it’s impossible to explain without talking Scott Burns, Morrisound Studios and Morris brothers, same for Thomas Skoksberg for Sweden. That’s quite emotionnal to talk about this period, all of it is truely legendary and kids now have to know part of this history when they listen their stuff, like history books at school. Thank you so much again for that interview.
To finish i wanted to mention my favorite productions :
    Suffocation - Pierced from Within
Cannibal Corpse - Tomb of the mutilated
And a forgotten album wich sounds awesome to me : Overthrow - Within Suffering !

Cannibal Corpse - Butchered At Birth was the first Brutal Death Metal album. Suffocation started Slam . Butchered At Birth was the first Death Metal album with guttural Vocals, Heavy breakdowns, and before that album you can hear the difference. It was definitely a step beyond Death, Obituary, Morbid Angel, Entombed, Atrocity, Deicide, Repulsion, Carcass, Atheist, Benediction, Loudblast , Autopsy and other early Death Metal bands around at the time. The Vocals Chris Barnes provided for Butchered At Birth made all the other Death Metal Vocalists sound like they were actually just singing. Deicide without a doubt stepped up the technicality and brutality on Legion, Immolation, Broken Hope, Suffocation, and Incantation all followed the Heavier Butchered At Birth type of Death Metal

Mick Harris is the man but he has always been extremely difficult to be around. Harmony Corruption is a masterpiece and Mick is a huge part of that. He wrote over half the album and his style of drumming was so very unique. If you muted all the music on any song off that album and only played the drums, I could instantly tell you what song it is just from his drum parts. They were so musical because he wasn’t the most skilled drummer, but Mick had originality and his own style. Too bad he’s his own worst enemy.

IMO part of it is correct on being raw and fresh. But I feel the main contributor would be most first albums/demos are/was written by kids..Sitting around jamming and writing riffs for years as a kid, so they have so much material to put on tape... Then as Scott brought up, they tour and are pressed to record a follow-up album. Not to say sophomore recordings aren't great. 2 minutes in & I am already loving it the Sadus album he was talking about was Elements of Anger, & the last album he ever produced was of the 2005 Frozen in Time by Obituary. I just love any albums this man produced, that classics sound from Obituary, Atheist, Cynic, Napalm Death, you name it. Can't have a producer like Scott Burns anymore, thanks to this!

Thank you. This is a great interview. Scott worked on some of the best records and did an amazing job. Those albums still sound better than most of the records released nowadays, at least in this genre of music.

Being in young and in a metal band, your 1st studio experience might be the first time you can actually hear your singer...."Oh hey he's actually pretty good - and we have lyrics!"

This is such a great interview. I began hosting a metal show in college in 1990, right when the full on surge in death metal began. I had access to so many great bands and albums, and every time you saw Scott Burns' name in the credits you knew, at least from a production standpoint, that it was going to be good. He basically CREATED a death metal sound, and that's a good thing. There were differences with the Swedish bands and some other parts of the world, but when you saw Scott's name you knew sound wise that it was going to be worth a serious listen. He's amazingly humble given his part in death metal history.
Oh, and Harmony Corruption is by far my favorite Death Metal album. By 2021, it's almost an outlier in terms of it's sound compared to the rest of their albums. But that album played a HUGE part of me becoming a Death Metalhead.

It makes me sad to hear that Mick Harris didn't like the sound on Napalm Death's Harmony Corruption.... because I F%cking Loved it when it came out. I mean, I get it... Mentally Murdered EP has one of the most insane organic sounding grindcore sounds one could ever hope for, there was no where to go but down. Yet, after finding Harmony Corruption I was looking for anything from Burns and Morrisound. That fat mid crushed tight and crisp sound really helped Death Metal along. the DiY stuff before it I can appreciate now that I love it... but back then... the cleaner heavy sounding riffs and drums of Burns' work really set the genre on its way as a viable medium. Massive appreciation for that work 30+years later.

It's funny. You can hear the squeak in his voice/delivery that in the Cannibal Corpse Documentary, Centuries of Torment, alot of the guys imitated him for. I picked it up right away having watched that Doc 30 plus times. Arguably the best, well done band documentary out there.

Boomy drums are still my favorite drum sound in general, but Scott really got one of the perfect sounds for death metal that holds up today because he was about real performances of the bands and just getting the best sound that represented the bands. I love they're not so clean I hate processed sounding metal.

Very interesting interview, with a subject that has avoided the limelight, how did you score this interview???!! 😮 One thing I was wondering was, Scott now works as a computer programmer (I'm pretty sure software was becoming a feature of the recording process at this stage), I find it surprising that a Pro Tools suite would present such a challenge. Besides that, many bands would like to "record live" or record as in the past, without the gadgetry. I wonder is it the case that Scott doesn't have the time and he was trying to politely Imply this? I'm sure Jim Morris would have him back, show him the new and old equipment and given a few weeks, he'd be flying. He may well be earning a small fortune in the tech world though 😜 I would LOVE to see Metallica + Scott Burns in Morrisounds. I rate Scott Morris > Flemming Rasmussen >>>> Bob >>Rick Rubin.

Anyway, I have an offer, what about you, Mr. Burns, tackle our upcoming songs, digitally from a distance ofc, across the Atlantic in fact, then you will get 3 birds with 1 stone, learn the computer studio stuff, you can stay in Florida AND you getting back in business! 😀👍 Yeah! Cheers n keep safe guys!
