- Dan Swanö is infamous in the Metal world for the bands he’s been involved with such as EDGE OF SANITY, Nightingale, Infestdead, Diabolical Masquerade, Pan.Thy.Monium, Bloodbath, and Ribspreader to name a few . And his Engineer credits read like a metal encyclopedia having worked with seminal acts like Marduk, Dissection, Opeth, Katatonia, November’s Doom, Therion, Incantation, Entails, and so on. This episode is probably the most intense and in-depth we have gone with a guest and we still probably need a part 2 and 3! There is no shortness of breath from Dan so this episode acts as an unwritten memoir of a golden age in metal with various perspectives to describe those cherished times. This was amazing guys! Dan swano needs more recognition as the guy is multi talented in the vein of Devin townsend. Moontower his solo album from 98 is a masterpiece and let’s be honest crimson 2 is basically his second solo album. Everything he does is awesome and that second witherscape album the nothern sanctuary is killer! Great riffs and Melodie’s on that album. Also his production on opeths orchid is groundbreaking. Massive influence to me and my project Earthmind.
This was so f*cking interesting and fun to listen. Please make an part 2 with Mr. Dan Swanö!!!

To me, Dan Swano is the modern day Motzart. He is that kind of genius musician.
Finally long form and in depth interview with my biggest musical hero, ill be listening to this more than once since there's so many amazing stories he has to tell. This was a fun interview to listen to, and of course we're very appreciative of him mentioning us. Having been a fan of his and writing to him since back in the early '90's it was always a dream to work with him someday, and we were so fortunate that he agreed. We've grown so much over the years as a result of working with him and the input he's given us even just in the mixing/mastering context. And his work keeps getting better every time as well, so we're happy to continue on with him. Dan's a part of the family now, so to speak. And he doesn't make fun of me for all the Journey riffs I steal, which is appreciated, lol. Keep up the great work guys, really enjoy the show. - Larry, Novembers Doom
This is one of the most interesting interviews I have ever heard. Been a Swanö fan since the early 90s, and even had him working on one of our albums.

I would love to hear more about Jon Nödtveidt as a musician, the recordings of the Marduk albums and probably the most important one that wasn't touched on in this interview - Quorthon. There must be some stories regarding him and the impact the music had.

Great, great interview. Good to see some recognition for Dan, he's greatly underrated. Part 2 is a must! It would be awesome if he could talk a bit more about:
- how he ended up singing on "Theli" and "A'arab Zaraq - Lucid Dreaming" by Therion
- how he remembers recording songs for Steel with Åkerfeldt and Lindgren.
- how he ended up leaving Edge of Sanity and what he thinks about the "Cryptic" album
- what happend in Bloodbath that led to him leaving the band
- how did Bloodbath get
Peter Tägtgren to become the new vocalist after Mike's departure
- the origins of Witherscape (and if there are plans for a new album)

Part 2 would be great. Was really nice. My brother and I, we grew up with listening to Dan Swanö, Katatonia, Opeth, so it's really nice to hear some backstory vibes. Especially the practical stuff was interesting, how the recording went and so on. Really cool.

Please do a part II of this! I don't really understand what happened with him getting "kick out" of Edge of Sanity and and the Cryptic album and then him doing Crimson II by himself, I'd like for him to give all the details to that! I also wanted to hear about Purgatory Afterglow; he talked about Entombed having a legendary guitar tone but I feel like Purgatory Afterglow has my favorite "Swedish DM" sound. Also some Witherscape and Nightingale would be cool!

Along with David Vincent, Dan Swano has the finest "ooh/yah/ugh" vocal punctuation in metal history in my opinion. Y'know, when riffs kick in etc. Don't know how else to describe it...
His friend/bandmate in Pan-Thy-Monium did a damn good job of that too. Ahh, the days...

This is awesome, great interview with with of the giants of death metal, and rock music in general. Dan is involved in so much it’s hard to fathom. I always loved Moontower as well. And I was totally unfamiliar with that 70s prog project he did with Akerfledt. Hope they eventually give it a proper release. You guys really did a good job.
Great interview. Dan has been a huge inspiration for me in the early days.Funny thing is I have been recording/mixing bands for 25 years now and I only had that Storm of the light's bane experience where the band wants to remix and redo things indefinitely recently. It left me sorta of depressed like I experienced a real burnout and lost interest in sound engineering for a few months. It's a really difficult thing to deal with when the band is unhappy but cannot put words properly to explain what they want. They ended up being happy but I can't really enjoy the result myself. That's par for the course I guess.
Dan 's a true legend, thanks for that great interview guys, i can listen Dan talking literally for days and his interviews are not easy to be found (if they exist, at all) . Thank you mr Swano! (no i won't ask anything for a possible Crimson III)

@@ReaperMetalProductions Sorry for the late reply, anyway I was thinking next time you have Dan on the show, it would be cool to hear about bands like Ancient (Norway - usually people inside the scene dont talk much about them), Centinex, some stories about Darkified, cool details about the album Naer solen gar niber for evogher from Dawn, and more gear talk, maybe orientated more for the Bass/Guitar aspect, like strings, pedals, odd tunnings and other nerdy things that usually nobody ask bands about. I'm glad someone brought up the whole difference between 'core' and something like Moontower cause there is little to none, its just a mentality really.
I am disappointed that Jon didn't do the King Diamond Scream on Somberlain ( but it's interesting to find out Dan Swano did the scream ) . Somberlain is a way better album than Light's Bane in my opinion. May Jon enjoy mating with all the Daemons in the lowest level of Duat ( Tartarus ? , Anwh ? ). He ended his time on Earth to be with the Master . Restless In Purgatory , just not Rest in Peace in Jon's situation . Never have heard of Edge of Sanity ( I have heard Dan Swano with Bloodbath ) . edge of sanity are AMAAAAAZING. Crimson, The Spectral Sorrows, and Purgatory Afterglow are some of the very best progressive/melodic death metal albums ever written. Crimson is by far my favorite death metal album of all time. great riffs, super emotive vocals, some of the best screams in the entire genre, and one of the few instances of what can only be referred to as “cosmic tragdy” (along with Terminal Redux). amazing band, you should definitely check them out

I have this problem with Abominations of Desolation. The album sounds really cool objectively I guess, but by the time I heard it, I was so used to Altars and Blessed that I couldn't get into the different versions on Abominations. 😥

This was a great episode. Super psyched you asked about Diabolical Masquerade and to hear so much of the inside info on that project.
It did sound like you guys were getting a bit uncomfortable with the length of the episode and with how much technical detail Dan was giving haha. I’d say don’t sweat that and let the episodes go as long as needed. There’s other podcasts out there topping 3 and 4 hours now...but that’s why podcasts rule! Your listeners will be OK with it.

I love eos and nightingale but ive spent thousands of dolars on metal over the last 44yrs cause ive been working since i was 14 i just sent reaper 30 mo i hope you got it buddy and you dont have to send me a shirt also ill send another 40 this weekend the demos on hold too the guy wont return my phone calls anyway stoked about doing a podcast one day everybody do the right thing and send reaper some money to support reaper metal productionsl

Reaper Metal Productions How about some talk on Crimson 2? I know it was initially intended as a second solo album but not much more. Who played on it other himself, how much was written before he decided to make it edge of sanity? Also, what was it like recording ABRUPTUM?! And more mixing and production geek talk in general is fun, any old techniques or tricks, mics, drum triggers, etc
One more thing... the guitar solo on Uncreation that’s in 7/8 time! I would love to hear anything about that small piece of music. Thank you!
