Manowar - Triumph of Steel Rainbow - Bent out of Shape Rennaisance - A Song for all Seasons The Move - Shazam Joni Mitchell - Court and Spark Lucifer's Friends - Where the groupies killed the Blues
I think the reason I love metal artists, is because they are just regular people. They don’t expect the paparazzi, or the fame. They are just regular people making something they awesome
He wasn’t kidding about Renaissance. I can definitely hear some Opeth type themes in the title track. Very interesting record and pretty epic for the 70’s.
Found out about Camel from Mikael Akerfeldt! Awesome band, Moonmadness and Snow Goose are amazing albums. Peter Bardens has some great solo stuff as well
Peter Gabriel Song for All Seasons is not even one of Renaissance’s most acclaimed albums, but I agree it is a very underrated album. Very soft and beautiful, and surprisingly good to hear Michael digs it. I love that he has such varied taste in music.
Thank you so much Mr. Akerfeldt for your music and now for your recommendations. Annie Haslam's voice is just majestic and all the other bands are great as well. Good day to you Sir.
So awesome and not really coincidental that he mentioned one of my all time favorite but overlooked bands.. Renaissance!....... i was telling my friend how the new track dignity has some renaissance influence trip to the fair to be exact!
I'm Listening to renaissance right now. She is like the female Jon Anderson. Hints of abba tone on her voice too. Very cool prog folk album. Music reminds me a bit of old genesis mixed with some Yes.
The diversity in this repertoire explains the genius behind Mikael's music--and then some. He knows his stuff, what a swell guy to have a beer with and talk anything under the sun!
Dang your taste in music is fantastic. I'm getting so many new things to listen to that just blow my mind! I wish you did a lot of these videos all the time!! Thank you Mikael! Tack för allt
He's not joking about Lucifer's friends kiddies. Amazing band!! Auctually their evolutionary trajectory was very similar to Opeth's. They evolved from a metal band into something that defied classification. Coolest band name ever too.
I'm surprised he didn't recommend Camel. Their song "Never Let Go" was basically the inspiration for the riff on "Benighted". But yes, Renaissance is amazing. Great recommendation.
I CANNOT BELIEVE they were playing MALPRACTICE by Testament at the record store. That's their BEST old era song Id argue to my last breath. It's practically prog thrash but just.... Every aspect of the composition is 10/10 CRIMINALLY underrated
Mikael is about the “farting” album cover. They were shooting photos and none really came out right. Duane Allman, who is sitting next to the leaning dude(Dickey Betts) had just run to buy an 8 ball and sat back down, making everyone crack up. It’s Allman Brothers Live at Fillmore East( one of the greatest live albums ever)
Dylan , That is the full truth but many folks don't know the photo was not from the Fillmore but at Mussel Shoals . Man he sure missed out on one of the best Live albums ever. He's very well versed on so much but he has no clue who The Allman Brothers are.
If Morgan Freeman was a Swede, this would be his voice. I like how diverse Mikael's taste is. The best metalheads are the ones who realise the good in everything, either across metal or across music.
Mikael needs to check out Warriors of the World from Manowar. Their last great album. The title track is the simplest song ever written, but I'll be damned if it isn't catchy as all hell.
In Eastern Europe and Europe in general Manowar were HUGE. Like, Metallica or Maiden level huge. Nobody considers them a joke around here as a lot of people in the US do for some reason. Why is that is beyond me. And is not just guilty pleasure, they are legit, their first several albums are actually really good, even for people of highest standards, such as Mikael.
Listen man, with respect I say this, you go your way and I go my way, and that's all that simple, you're not someone I should take in that's freakin all
He's either wrong (or joking) about why everyone is laughing on the cover of At Fillmore East. Story goes that they were all stone-faced until Duane Allman's dealer arrived, and in the next picture they took he's holding the stash, covering it with his hands.
The most unexpected thing, really, some one knows the Churchill's, in Israel I barely know friends who listen to them, amazing 70s band, their debut is so rare it's ridiculous...
Tis a sign! One of the greatest prog metal bands of all time! You should check them out. Live at the Roundhouse tapes and Heritage gives you a great range
@@nopicks1 You mean the newer stuff. I think it's a bit sad he doesn't want to growl anymore. The older stuff was just so uplifting music. He is a great guy, funny af, but I wonder what happened that he went full 70s prog rock.
He's such a charmer; a guy to have a few beers with and hear some great stories; the anti-wanker rock star. I gotta get some Opeth records, and that really ain't my usual thang.
Went and listened to Renaissance "A Song for All Seasons" (ruclips.net/video/YdszVEg6e1Q/видео.html) based on his recommendation -- HOLY CRAP! "Epic" is not even remotely adequate to describe the song... Heavy without distortion, ethereal vocals, and complex AF. Definitely looking forward to listening to the whole album (in one sitting as recommended by Mikael).
7:30 - that's how I feel about The Mars Volta. I have no idea wtf is going on, insanely talented musicians. Just not my cup of tea. I'll never understand it.
If Mikael had a radio show where he just played obscure stuff he loves it would probably become my favorite show.
Would probably be the psychedelic / prog version of Fenriz' podcast, I'll take that in an instant!
He actually had a show like that on swedish radio
...yeah I really wish he was a radio DJ instead of joining Opeth
Basically what Fenris (Darkthrone) is doing with his "Radio Fenris". Worth to check out if you are into black metal or metal in general.
greatest music related show of all time
I wanna sit down with him, have a beer, and just chat music of all kinds.

also the band The Churchills aka Jericho aka Jericho Jones at the beginning

That Lucifer's Friend album is awesome.

Agreed such under rated gems.

Such an interesting guy. Love his music. Will give Renaissance a spin.
I would highly recommend "Scheherazade..."

I picked it up due to both Mikael and Tobias recommending it, and they were correct. It's a wonderful album.
ashes are burning is what hooked me to renaissance
Great selections!!! You are an old soul for appreciating those albums

Renaissance are wonderful. Make sure you listen to Scheherazade.
Turn of the Cards is my favorite from them. Mother Russia is a stunner, one of the greatest songs I've ever heard.

I got that Lucifer's Friend album on vinyl 35 years ago. It's epic!
Always a pleasure to see someone who knows what he is talking about.
He mentioned a band called Acid Bath at a concert I attended years back and I checked them out and think they were phenomenal.
He seems like a pretty chill dude.
Lucifer's friend! I got the first four albums. Kick-Ass Rock/Prog rock(Banquet album). Led Zeppelin ish at times , but their singer holy shit!!!
which is the band with the controversial album cover ?
If Morgan Freeman was a Swede, this would be his voice.
I like how diverse Mikael's taste is. The best metalheads are the ones who realise the good in everything, either across metal or across music.
When he says "From Birmingham" he sounds like Borat!
Mike wasn't joking. The dude singing in that Bent out of shape album by Rainbow is a really good vocalist.
Wow he’s right a song for all seasons is a beautiful album.
Just listened to song for all seasons - well that explains ALL of Opeth.
So far, I"m totally diggin' that Lucifer's Friend album. Thanks for the recommend!

Nice list, Mikael. But, are you serious about that "Bent out of shape"?
Is it really THE album from Rainbow?!

Shame he didn't buy either of them. Big mistake for a guitar play of his caliber.
