I just got two gopro eights and I made the mistake of thinking it was gonna be amazing quality right out of the box for music videos....lol...Anyways thank you so much for all the information that really helped me out a lot!
Wow great video, small suggestion, not even sure if this is possible, it would be cool if, when you’re playing you’re ski video, have half of it on the setting you half, and the other half changing as you show us the difference in settings

Very helpful video, do you know if the digital zoom reduces the quality of the video? When I use clear image zoom on my Sony a6500 the quality goes down noticeably so I am skeptical of digital zoom. Thanks again!
Just FYI, the GoPro website now says Hypersmooth 2.0 will be available in 4K 60p Linear mode soon, upcoming firmware. It's on their Hypersmooth 2.0 resolution chart in the Hero 8 section.
Great Video, I got my gopro a few days ago . Me and my friend are going to ski in febuary and we like to film some stuff maybe cut some scenes together. I am not shure what resolution i schould use. 60fps and 4k or just 30 fps . Does 60 fps in 4k have another disadvantage than memory space and battery life? Might the hardware be not good enough and give me a more bad quality after all because of the high frames it trys to record? I just want a clean good quality ! Pls give me your advise :D
4K/60 does not support the Boost Stabilisation and records in HEVC. You should therefore check if your PC can handle this codec. 4K/60 is a good solution for skiing if you don't want to constantly change the settings.
Hi - thank you for your video, I’m a complete beginner on GoPros and i understood the technicalities. One question (from a beginners POV) - do we REALLY need ND and Polarized filters with the Hero 8? The info out there is confusing - since I don’t have a previous reference point, I gathered Simon the Internet OPINIONS that ND filters and Hyper-smooth are incompatible. Unfortunately the videos out there seem biased towards showing the “value” of the filters but they never talk about the settings. Would you entertain doing a video about this?
You use ND filters mostly to be able to follow the 180° rule, which means setting your shutter speed to double your framerate to get natural motion blur. Hypersmooth, like any EIS software, doesn’t really like motion blur.
Do you use ND filters when shooting at 30 and 60 fps while skiing and if so do you set the shutter speed for them or do you leave them in auto? Do you always use auto shutter speed? From what i understand you need to setup the right shutter speed for the fps if you want the cinematic look so what should i do? Auto shutter or double the framerate? Your videos look great to me so any tips that are gonna make mine look like yours is appresciated :P
I normally do not use ND filters for skiing. Yes it's true that you should set the shutter to double the frame rate for a more cinematic look. But with changing lighting conditions it is really cumbersome to always set the shutter manually - and you would even have to change the filter all the time. And there is another negative aspect to consider - the electronic stabilization needs higher shutter speeds to work properly. For these reasons I do not use ND-Filters for shooting action.
Just bought my first GoPro and this video was perfect. With the addition of new firmware 1.50 where Linear is now available in 4k/60 and 4k/50 with Hypersmooth 2.0, would that change any of your recommendations you mentioned in this video? Thank you.
great video, but is there something i'm missing, like maybe a setting that will allow me to actually watch my vids on my computer? both of my laptops meet (exceed) the minimum requirements but neither will play my hero8 videos. :( i guess it's either fork out a thousand bucks for a brand new computer or..... get rid of the hero8 and go back to an Olympus TG Tracker.
Hi! Thanks for all the useful information. I will go to Switserland for skiing soon. I have the PolarPro filters for the GoPro 8. ND 8, 16 and 32. How would that change your suggested settings? I will make a project with DSLR shots, drone shots and GoPro footage combined on a 24fps timeline. Little bit concerned about shooting skiing in 24 fps on the GoPro. Will it look smooth?
I would not change the settings. With the ND Filter you can bring down the shutter speed and get some motion blur. But dont forget that the stabilization will suffer if you have too mutch motion blur. And yes, with 24fps movements sometimes look a bit choppy but you will see that the great stabilization on the Hero8 helps a lot!
Hey, I just upgrade my GoPro 5 to GoPro 8 and last ski last Saturday. I got a lot of videos with freeze images and continues audio. Have you even have this problem? I filmed in 1080 and 60fps.
@@MountMediaChannel I tested with different battery and SD card. I think it may caused by the third party battery. I will buy more GoPro original battery and try it this Saturday.
Hi. My Hero 8 shuts down when I go out in -5 C weather. Is there any way to get the battery life to last long as advertised, or is it useless for skiing?
