Excellent suggestions, I just used the POV setting for video shooting in a 10K race and it worked perfectly. Thank you for taking the time to explain and share the information!
Just got mine yesterday. Been watching you've videos about it since then. You're very helpful. Please make more videos about the GoPro 8 Black. I'm in learning Mode right now. Thanx
Question for an unusual application. Our GoPro Hero8 is BackBone modified. Lens gone. We use it on an infinity-corrected microscope. The data are to be processed numerically (Fourier transforms etc.) not really that interested in the image itself. We want fast. We want low light levels. Probably not important whether we have 1080p or 4K. Processing in image J or VLC preferred, but we can learn. We think it will make a nifty microscopy camera for the price. Suggestions for best optimization?
That’s awesome! Assuming you want the maximum SNR, I would go with a slow shutter speed for maximum light gathering and the lowest ISO to maximize the SNR.
@@forestchaput is the 8 as stabil as people claim? (Usually review people are paid and or got a free camera) I wish people would post RAW,100% untouched ,UNgraded..ACTUAL out of camera footage
Great video. I have a still photography background and have really gotten into cinematography this past year. Have the GoPro 5 & 7 and Iphone 11 pro. Have plans to modify the 7 through Back Bone so I can use my Nikon lenses and gain a "movie camera" with depth of field ability. I'm seriously looking at the GoPro 8. I plan on making short nature documentaries. I have viewed a lot of RUclips tutorials regarding "cinematic settings" for the GoPro. Yours is the first where you recommend the highest possible ISO setting. I get that. My question: If you set the shutter speed, you definitely need an nd filter. And if you use an nd filter, according to the tutorials I've seen hyper smooth does not function. Most of my footage will be handheld. Do I disable this function and use a gimbal?
Great vid. Question: In your simpler ‘set it / forget it’ setup, why not set the ISO max much lower (as you did in the pro settings suggestion)? Are you assuming an amateur photographer would have issues with holding steady - so it’s better to have a faster shutter speed - or do you trust the higher ISO more for JPEGs?
Great question. I'm assuming that in most cases a professional will have some support (tripod, etc) that will enable use of a slower shutter speed. Or, that they will just manually raise that value as the light allows for it.
Rocky Mountain School of Photography thanks man. Does it require phantom power? If so what recorder are you using? I’m I’m the market to upgrade and I’m debating couple of different options but your audio sounded really clean
Great video! Im a beginner with gopro and just bought a hero8 for our non-profit organisation. I want to use it on either voice control (from my head) or in my hand to take photos mostly of horses hooves before, during and after I have trimmed them. I also want to take video footage. A problem! Firstly thank you for your help but I had a problem with the shutter speed. Nothing is wrong, you just need to get yourself a neutral density filter to knock down the light a bit and allow the camera to shoot at 120th of a second shutter speed.
Thanks for your video. Great content! I have a question about my GoPro HERO8 Black but need some introduction first. I have a long road trip from Florida to Oregon. I bought a GoPro HERO8 Black to record the whole route in "real-time" (no timelapse). I want to upload the videos on YouYube in 4 parts. Each part is 8 to 9 hours driving (I will stop the camera to rest and shake my legs every 3 to 4 hours). I will mount the camera inside my car on the official GoPro Mount. I want to do minimum effort after recording (no color grading, no lut, no music ....) as these files would be huge and rendering takes forever! For storage, I have two SanDisk Extreme Pro Micro SDXC UHS-I U3 A2 V30 Memory Card (256GB). For battery, I have two of them, a charger, and a 20500 mA power bank. Also, I have the easy option of connecting the GoPro directly to the cigarette lighter charger. With this introduction now my question is: What setting do you recommend on my GoPro for video recording of this long trip? P.s.: Please let me know if you have any advice. Best, Ehsan
I would probably recommend shooting 1080p at 24fps to limit the amount of heat built up in the camera, set the color to GoPro Color and you should be all set!

One more question/observation: Did you notice that after you set the camera on 4K/60 in the pro video settings... you briefly switched over to show super view and it downgraded you to 30fps... and didn’t change back to 60 after you switched back to wide? Weird. My question is - I can’t seem to be able to turn on Boost (maximum stabilization) in 4K/60... Is that max stabilization only available in 4K/30? Or am I doing something wrong? Thanks.
Here's what I found in the manual: "Heads Up: HyperSmooth is unavailable when recording 4K60 video with the Linear digital lens. It will use standard video stabilization in its place." It looks like the linear mode is the problem, not the 4K60fps.
redmrc_vidz I’m just bummed that you can’t use Boost (better stabilization than hypersmooth) in 4K Linear 60fps. But I guess they’re all just a digital in camera crops/anti-distortion algorithms once you get tighter than superview... it would just be nice to have the linear 4K 60fps Boost SOOC.

14:20 "Here's the set and forget it, just straight upload settings. ... We can fix that later." Umm, no you can't. You can't fix it later if you're intending to simply upload it plain. Also, it's wide. No.
if you really want to master the go pro you should realize what are its limits, i thought this camera will finally help me to replace my dslr camera, but is not. it has pros and cons
I dipped my toe into the GoPro world with my 1st hero 8 black, terrific camera other than it doesn't do the 1 biggest reason I went and bought it, 4k 60fps...in linear, they pulled a fast one. Hope it was worth the 1 sale GoPro, instead of a customer for life if there's not a firmware update giving the hero 8 black the specifications it's supposed to have had according to the literature. Sad 😢, not cool.
You prefer to have a longer exposure time over increased ISO, really? A noisy image is far more useful than a blurred image. There's only one thing you can do with a blurred image, bin it.
Completely agree! Just rewatched the video and you are right, we want a higher ISO rather than a slower shutter speed! If you watch our video on sharp photos we say just that! You are right!!
Found it interesting that your video aims for professional results meaning post editing capabilities and yet you are explaining what EV stands for. Anyone not knowing what EV means is going to have NO idea how to edit raw images or footage in the first place lol.

I think you said (9:30) In general you'll be shooting SLOW-MO with a GoPro. Wha?
You're saying most people want to shoot in Slow Motion?
Yeah! Because you can run it normal too! It just gives you the option of running in slow motion for slowing down the cool stuff you do!
you can not record in 4k 60 fps with super view. therefore gopro turn to 30 fps, when you choose super view. And alco when you than choose 60 fps, it will turn to wide...
Thank you! Thumbs UP! Subscribed.
Good video
Thank you!
@@forestchaput no problem anytime
But you uploaded to 1080?
Yep. We shoot all of our tutorials in 1080. Makes the editing / uploading process faster and there’s not much reason for the added resolution.
@@forestchaput Im pretty sure over 90% of the people would watch it in 1080p anyways.
Max ISO 6400?
Yep!
@@forestchaputwon't it be too grainy?
price just dropped $50 more dollars for the Gopro 8 to 349. All of a sudden I can now afford it. My first gopro so I'm watching everything I can before it gets delivered.
Heck yes! Nice! 👍
Great information..thabk you
You’re welcome!
i learn something in this vedio
Glad to hear it!
firmware upgrade to do 4k 60 linear
Yep!
Thanks for this.
You’re welcome!
14:20 "Here's the set and forget it, just straight upload settings. ... We can fix that later."
Umm, no you can't. You can't fix it later if you're intending to simply upload it plain. Also, it's wide. No.
Ummm. Yes you can.
Thank u for good tips 👍👍
You’re welcome!
All this mentioning of editing program. Obviously something else other than the app ???
Yep. Really anything other than the app. Luma fusion is awesome. Premiere is awesome.
Rocky Mountain School of Photography not sure if my Timmy dink laptop will do those but on my phone I have iMovie
iMovie is great too!
if you really want to master the go pro you should realize what are its limits, i thought this camera will finally help me to replace my dslr camera, but is not. it has pros and cons
Absolutely! The GoPro cannot be a DSLR or Mirrorless replacement but it does make a great camera for certain situations.
does anyone elses go pro look really bad indoors and up close? taking photos and vidoes of myself vlog style just seems to look really bad?
Indoors in low light situations it will struggle. I recommend using a big window for light or using a lamp with some diffusion.
Sorry to hear that!
I like your U.S. Patent NO.52... :)
*thanks... GoPro hero 8 great! But voice commands poor .... It's useless...*
I agree! I turn that off almost all the time. It's far too unreliable.
I just wish you said "set it and forget it and upload on RUclips". 😂😂
Hahaha. But the goal is to actually understand what everything does!
Again, I am surprised! Why buy a action cam to take photos???
You prefer to have a longer exposure time over increased ISO, really? A noisy image is far more useful than a blurred image. There's only one thing you can do with a blurred image, bin it.
Completely agree! Just rewatched the video and you are right, we want a higher ISO rather than a slower shutter speed! If you watch our video on sharp photos we say just that! You are right!!
Found it interesting that your video aims for professional results meaning post editing capabilities and yet you are explaining what EV stands for. Anyone not knowing what EV means is going to have NO idea how to edit raw images or footage in the first place lol.

ok, lets talk about the 28 dislikes
Hahaha. Thanks 😀
Thank you. Your video really helped me figure out how to adjust my settings exactly how I want them. Thank you very much
Glad I could help!
