    Been watching for a couple years now and I have to say you’ve been, by far, the most helpful. I’ve been riding about 6 years now but don’t get to go all that often, so I was stuck in the “learning” phase for a few years, and will even admit I still feel like that now a little. But you have such a way of explaining things that my riding progressed tremendously just sitting in my living room watching you. I’ve got a couple friends who have just started and after I’ve shown them your channel they literally have progressed so much. Your delivery and genuine care for snowboarding and your audience is unmatched and seriously appreciated. And I think this video in particular only further proves that sentiment. So for real, thank you. You’ve made snowboarding so much more enjoyable for my friends and I.

      Hey Veronica! I'm sure my messy hair will come back soon, I'll be starting a cycling channel up in the summer, but for the moment I'm not even allowed to do that due to the lockdown rules over here in France. No more than 1km from your home, for no more than 1 hour, and not doing anything considered remotely dangerous! Yeah I may well make a fitness video or something, but as I'm not a personal trainer or anything it's not so much my thing, I'll have a think! And for patreon, I'll look into it!

    • @veronical8103
      @veronical8103 4 года назад +1

      Malcolm Moore OMG. France’s lockdown rules are stricter than here. I routinely see runners and cyclists on the streets and people having tailgate parties at the parking lot, maintaining 6 feet away, or at least initially. That’s saying a lot from France, which is known for its revolution for liberty! I do feel for you, but on the positive note, the virus will likely die down a lot sooner where you are than in the US because of the stricter measures in France.
      As Queen Elizabeth says, “We should take comfort that while we may have more still to endure, better days will return.” 🙂

      @@malcolmmoore I would say if you are used to Premiere, it is not a hard jump to Resolve, unless you do a lot of grading or After Effects work (Resolve/Fusion uses nodes rather than layers). I was on Premiere before, but it got too expensive to maintain. Resolve is free with mostly all functionality, including stabilisation. And if you buy, its a one-time payment - and they have lots of updates, about 6 since i bought mine! And I do like how it makes you logically work - import media, arrange, then colour grade. Also has a decent sound processor.

      I tend to use 24fps 👍

    • @BarryP
      @BarryP 4 года назад

      @@malcolmmoore I recently figured out that 60fps files, left alone in post and encoded at 60fps looks pretty terrible on YT, compared to if you encode that same 60fps footy at 30fps, instead. The pixelation during rapid cam movements is greatly reduced. That said, let's say you have a shot slowed down from 60fps. Would your max slowdown be 50% or 40%. Do you get where I'm going with that question? Will you see the stutter that should technically be there if encoded at 24 instead of 30fps? Just picking your brain, as your stuff looks great... even though you seem to have the automatic advantage of a LOT of bluebird days (GoPro footy ALWAYS looks fantastic on a bluebird day). ;-)

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  4 года назад

      @@BarryP I tried messing around with loads of different settings when I started up to see what works well. 60fps played real time in a 24fps isn't ideal as the frames aren't dropped in an even manner. Most the time you don't really notice it to be honest but when you start to see it it's frustrating. Therefore I only film in 60fps when I know I'll be slowing it down. I have toyed with shooting my headcam videos in 60fps and exporting all of them at 30fps. But with my other videos I just happened to settle for a 24fps timeline. People say you get more 'cinematic' looking footage at 24fps compared to 30fps but honestly I couldn't really see much difference between the two. The benefit of using a 24fps timeline us that you can also low your footage down a little bit more, like you mentioned 60fps drops to 40% rather than 50%!

    • @BarryP
      @BarryP 4 года назад

      I really wish GoPro would update firmware to support "24-Rule" framerates (IE: 24, 48,72,96, etc). It would be so easy to do, and they'd be doing themselves a massive favor. It would pretty much unlock streamed visualizations of what their cameras are actually capable of.
      Here is my most recent snow project that was shot on a single 6 Black in 2.7k/60 (encoded the same way), with the cam on a stick at times and a Karma Grip at others: ruclips.net/video/qPc7SHSBIF4/видео.html It's not bad, but I truly wish I had exported it in 30fps. It would be much better, that way. I also wish I had learned to color grade, do color grading on the adjustment layer level, and ramp from 100-50-100% prior to making it (I have since learned all of the above, since being pretty much either fishing or stuck at home, frustratingly pounding away at my keyboard, during this unique time).
      If you have time, I would truly appreciate you having a look at this clip from a recent trip to New Hampshire. ruclips.net/video/BQpGUClGmj8/видео.html and making additional suggestions to the above either here or on that clip's url. This is raw 2.7k/60 stuff, that was only cut, and encoded likewise... No grading, no nothing... and it looks pretty good. My buddy and I (he was filming, I was riding) have TONS of footage like this from that trip, and we obviously can't really get together to do a timeline for the project. I'd love to hear what you would do with such footy, from a post standpoint. I would prefer to make the most of this time out of work, and get my GoPro snow learning-curve off the books, and have presets ready for when we can finally get together to choose what is in, and what is out. Any suggestions are appreciated.
      I know the videography tutorials are not your first choice. We would all rather be riding slush right now and talking about this over the summer. You may have keyed in on a very good skill that you have and that people really want to learn. Thank you, for engaging in this convo.

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  4 года назад

      @@BarryP the second clip immediately looks so much more professional due to the stabilisation. If I'm going for a purely creative edit I normally start with the song. I try and slow mo on slow bits of the song, and cut on the beat, things like that. I would drop it into a 30fps timeline and then you can easily ramp between full and half speed. Colour wise it looks pretty good already, the nice things about shooting on snow is that you really don't need to worry about getting skin tones looking good. Just do white balance from the snow and then you can find a LUT that works. I don't normally go too intense with them, turn the opacity down, and it'll just have that slight look to it!

    Great video and some very handy tips. My GoPro settings are pretty much the same as yours except I shoot in GoPro Flat as I find it easier to match up with my other cameras. I also shot my last trip to the Val Thorens with the Insta360 One X (you can view on my tiny channel!😊) . Great thing with this 360 camera is the selfie stick problem is no longer an issue and it'll capture all angles. 😉

      Ah yeah I shoot everything on the GoPro so that's no worries for me, do you find it takes long to edit the footage from flat?

    • @Jon-Chan
      @Jon-Chan 4 года назад

      @@malcolmmoore If you only shoot with just the GoPro and don't have to match footage from another camera, then I guess shooting in GoPro Color is good and the colours are pretty vibrant. But from all the youtube tutorials I've watched about colour grading GoPro footage is to shoot in Flat profile as it allows you more room to adjust the colours better/more without the footage breaking up/artifacting and this is what I've found to be the case too, and because of this, I also think with the Flat profile you may get better results with usiing LUTs due to better dynamic range. I guess then it will take a little bit more time to edit as may need to adjust the contrast and colour saturation with the Flat profile before applying a LUT and I guess time is of the essence when you need to post videos regularly.
      One tip I can advise you is not to shoot with auto white balance. AWB can sometimes change the colour of the footage when the light is variable, that is, if on a sunny day, a cloud covers the sun during filming, the white balance will also change to allow for the change in light affecting the colour balance making it harder to match a sequence of footage. I usually fix the white balance to prevent this to 5000k/5500k so if you apply a LUT it will have the same affect across the whole video. 👍

    Hey Malcolm, could you explain how you stabilize the footage? With as many details as possible, because I have an older gopro and the footage always comes out so shakey it's totally unusable.
    Another angle you could try out is to extend your gopro pole and position it behind your head looking down at you. It gives this video game third person view that looks very cool. The only downside is that it makes it twice as difficult to snowboard but I'm sure you'd be able to handle it.

    • @malcolmmoore

      Basically the newer gopros have digital stabilisation built into them. From the hero 7 onwards they will do alot of work for you. The new hero 9 even offers horizon levelling which pretty much makes that gimbal I use in this video redundant!

      I'm now using the hero 10 and I don't have anything around that no, with the new white batteries they last pretty long in the cold. For the older ones you can get these wind fur things that are foam and help suppress wind noise, they might potentially keep it warmer.
