I met Mr. Lilly when I was a sophomore in high school in 1972. He was doing a promotional visit for a local car dealership. I had just lost my dad, so my adult brother took me there early, so no one else had gotten there yet. He was so gracious and nice. I was in awe and speechless to be in the presence of my hero and idol, and he didn’t disappoint. He shook my hand and we talked football for a couple of minutes and he offered me his best wishes. I have a Polaroid picture with his hand on my shoulder from that day which he signed for me, I’m 64 now and that photo is still priceless to me. It’s so good to see him healthy and doing so well. He represents the best of what a Texan should be.

In 1972 or 1973, I was playing pee wee football where I wore Bob Lilly's number and played his position. My coach told me if I wanted to be a great defensive tackle, I needed to watch Bob Lilly play on Sunday. Cut to the scene in an airport the same year where I spied Mr. Cowboy in the terminal. I told my dad "hey, that's Bob Lilly!" Dad said, "Well go over and introduce yourself." Scared to death, I approached him and introduced myself. He could not have been more gracious. He must have talked to me for 20 minutes. He treated me like I was the star football player instead of him and made a life long impression on me. I can't tell you how impressed I was and how much respect I have for this great humble man.

I was 10 when I went to my first Cowboy game in the Cotton Bowl. 1965, they played Jim Brown and the Cleveland Browns. I was in awe of Lilly, Meredith, Hayes, Jordan, Andrie, Howley, Landry and of course seeing the greatest running back of all time Jim Brown. The Cowboys lost and I cried. The Browns were a juggernaut then. I had chill bumps or some say goose flesh watching this great game and great athletes in person. I'm still in awe of the players I idolized as a kid in the 60s. The 70s the same thing.

Tom Landry built his defense around Bob Lilly's great defensive talent. Lilly was a consistently great player whose greatness was overshadowed by the fact that he wasn't mean or vicious. Bob Lilly didn't have the mean persona of a Dick Butkus and in the words of one teammate, "If Bob had been mean, they'd have had to outlaw him!"

My parents were students at TCU when Mr Lilly was a student playing for the Horned Frogs-my parents were a bit older amd graduated ahead of Lilly but from time I was old enough to start being seriously interested in football (about 1968) my dad would always talk about 2 great players at TCU from his time there as a student-one was a RB named Swink and the other was Bob Lilly-we had left Texas and moved to first Oklahoma for a couple of years and then to Baltimore MD for 6 mo (transferred for my dad’s job in Fed govt) then moved back to Dallas where my dad was stationed in Fed govt office downtown and stayed there-and we were Cowboys fans or at least my Dad was from the day they drafted Bob Lilly. Ironically my head football coach in HS was also a TCU alum who played for TCU in early to mid 1960s and I think may have been on the team for Mr Lilly’s final season-but always also had glowing things to say about him not only as a player but as a man. Unfortunately I never got to meet him (did get to meet Roger Staubach when he came and spoke at our church around 1974 or 75. These were not only great football players but fine morally upright men-the kind of sports figures that deserved to be emulated and to be role models for other young men and kids. Sadly, there are far fewer such pro athletes today that deserve such adoration.

This show compared to other interview shows is kinda like a stick figure drawing compared to the Mona Lisa. I'm not hating, I'm just being honest. It's very low production. In the case of this area that's fine. It brings intimacy to the interviews but in serious areas that's a problem. Like Stevie Ray Vaughn's people hiring a Christian based helicopter company...that would be a problem but in areas like this it's fine. Everything in life has a balance and you have to constantly think situationally

I'm glad I typed that out because that's something that's been on the tip of my tongue...folks use a Xhristian connection to push their remedial businesses and in important areas that can cause damage. You're not supposed to be using religion to get ahead. That's why there's supposed to be a separation of state and church.
