- We are back for a quick update on what's next on our Dreaming of a Chateau adventure. It has been a busy last couple of weeks with our visa deadline application looming and all the paperwork collection that entails. Mid November is our self-imposed deadline to submit our applications. From there we wait and hope to hear the good news from the French embassy. Wish us luck for a speedy process!
Thank you all for your support and lovely comments.
From California to a Chateau in the South of France. Welcome to Dreaming of a Chateau 🏰 Follow some of the daily life and adventures of Julia, her partner Caroline, her sister Penelope and her parents as this American family takes a leap of faith to live out a long-awaited dream. Chateau de Puy Vidal is a medieval fortress turned renaissance Castle, and is located in the Charente region of Nouvelle Aquitaine, France.
This channel is dedicated to our love of chateaux, old stones, magic, family and history. We share with you our process of applying to visas, setting up a business, purchasing a property sight unseen during COVID all before moving across the world.
What happens when your dreams come true?
Stay tuned.
I am excited for all of you. I watched Stephanie's tour of your chateau and was stunned by it's beauty inside and out. You are incredibly fortunate to have purchased such a gem and I can't wait to see what you will do with it.
So exciting but so complicated, most of us would know nothing of the process involved in moving to another country. Thanks for the update, it will be great to see you back at the Chateau... it's such a beautiful place to call home!
I didn't realize the details involved in opening a business/purchasing property and or moving to France. Very interesting and exciting! Can't wait !
Thank you for revealing the process of the visa, business plan(s), etc. I worked for the United States Treasury department and know the red tape for citizens. I can not fathom the time and hard work it would take to apply for these things in a foreign Country. I just found you tonight and watched the first video because Of your connection with Stephanie Jarvis. I subscribed because I am impressed with your business minds . I’m a country gal myself but have met and personally know people who know how to build successful businesses, and I see that energy in both of you. I have a good feeling about you two, little sister and your parents. A family bonded in love, strength and unity is a success story alone. It will be your armor when you feel overwhelmed at times. This is better than a fairytale . I see a very intelligent father /husband , the matriarch who is a talented artist & loving mother and three young women who have the potential to do what they set out to do. In my neck of the woods, we call it GIRL POWER! I wish you all well as your new adventure begins.
That whole business plan will work out as you are extremely well prepared. It will be the European vibe that you will have to get used to. The French lifestyle. The old vibe, the pace. You will love it, of course, you will adjust. It is so nice of you to take us along.
I must say that your chateau is one of the most gorgeous I've ever seen whilst following some of the Chateaux reno channels from the US.... 🏰
As an empath, I am often struck with the sense that so many of the enthusiastic expats doing this brave and awesome journey are actually the reincarnated souls of the French aristocrats who were so abruptly (!), fatally removed from the scene (and more 😱)
during the Revolution. It's possible that the anciennes are returning ... ☺️
Wishing you all the very best and bonne chance with your trip! 💛🍀
Can't wait to see more of your magical castle ... it's superb!
1/ they were abruptly and fatally removed for a reason
2/ worry not that the French aristocrats did not get dirty building, restoring or even cleaning their châteaux themselves.
Who are the "anciennes"? you mean les anciens?
@@iyzabel Hola Yzabel ... Nadie es perfecto, mi amiga. Que tengas un hermoso dia! 🤷🌺

I would be interested in hearing a little about finances, how you can afford it all, it's frustrating never to hear anything about this aspect of chateau ownership. Looking forward to you getting started. Hope your father is happy to be on board.
Have a lovely time on the beginning of your new journey. Thank you for including me.
And, now that you have told everyone when you’re going to be gone, please get a house sitter.
Ive commented before on your production values, but talking us for a walk and drawing us into your conversation worked extremely well. Often car journeys and walks can be as exciting as watching paint dry.
You’re never boring.
OMG! such bad grammar. Thank you for the likes, correction made.
I had no idea that the visa application was so long-winded. It must be very frustrating. I hope that everything goes smoothly and that you guys are there sooner rather than later.
What a lovely update. I'm sure it is overwhelming at times, you guys seem definitely up to the task & have such wonderful support systems at home and already in France. I wish you all the best and good luck with your visas! Have a wonderful journey and I hope it's an enjoyable experience! Wow a Chateau! Thank you for sharing, take really good care of yourselves, stay safe & safe travels! Kathy x (Ontario, Canada)
So happy for you all and your wonderful grand plan. It sounds very exciting and I'm looking forward to following and enjoying vicariously. Good luck with all the paperwork. In the past I have started a few businesses with my husband and you probably know this already but, you pick a space; rent or buy it; sign the lease; purchase a license with the town and state; arrange for heat, light and phones; and move in and put your sign up. Easy peasey, but of course you don't live the French life in Illinois. It was still marvelous. As I followed Stephanie's videos of your beautiful Chateau, I fell in love with it too. Marianne, Chicago.
I love that you are detailing the entire administrative process along with the wonderful chateau that you will be showing. It's interesting to me to know what exactly is involved in making this move and business happen. So excited for you all!
Don’t worry girlies - this was a brilliant update. Loved seeing your neighbourhood so that was a bonus. Gosh it is busy but it will be so worth it. Good luck with it all and catch up soon 🍷👍
Really appreciated hearing about the visa process and business plans!
Excited with you and thank you for updating!. ❤️
Bonjour Mesdames,
Very excited about your purchase in France.
However, there are numerous legal and administrative constraints that your readers must be aware before residing in France among which :
- owning property in France does not give residency rights - if not a EU citizen, strict immigration laws (a talent visa is not delivered upon request and can be denied) ;
- renovations concerning a building listed as « a monument historique » (you need permission by a state appointed architect before you touch anything and must use special qualified workers which can be very expensive);
- if renting more than five rooms, you are considered as a hotel and must comply with all hotel regulations ;
- strict inheritance laws (your children are entitled to a share of your estate before your spouse and cannot be desinherited) and death tax (up to 60%) for joint owners who are not married (common law spouses have no rights) ;
- employment regulations (expensive contributions and regulations in favor of employees).
I do not mean to spoil the dream, but one has to be aware of the above.

I am super excited for you and I also feel that I am sharing this journey of life with you. I'm exciteddddddddd. 😘😘😘
You have chosen well with the chateau; it’s amazing! Wow, a lot a head, a lot to do and to experience, what an exciting adventure for all of you. Wishing you all the best and safe travels.🌈🇨🇦
Thank you Julia, Carolina and mum for the update. So interesting to learn about the work behind your move and timelines. I’m looking forward to seeing your first reactions 💕 All the best.
Lovely to see your new vlog - can't wait to see what's coming up! Good luck!
I’m so impressed by how much work this is for you all! I’m American as well (also in So Cal) and the process is fascinating. Even getting visas to visit some countries as a tourist can be a task, so I am not at all surprised by what it takes to move there!
Congratulations on your continued progress and thank you for giving us this update!
¡Hola desde Honduras! So excited for y'all! Obtaining my residency here was a long, complex process but worth it. Hoping everything goes smoothly in France. Looking forward to more stories about your adventure. ¡Buena suerte! 😊
You are going to have the time off your lives and we are going to have the best time watching. Blessings, happiness and all the love to you both and your family XXX
I am SO excited for you and your family! I know this sounds corny but as a native Californian (Riverside) I really LOVED watching you stroll around the your neighborhood. Makes me homesick. ☺️. I’ve been in NW Arkansas 25 loooooooong years! I too have been combing French real estate, thanks to Steph.
I’m excited and thanks for going over just a bit of the process of moving to another country.
What a process to get your visas but how exciting for you all. I look forward to following you on this journey and eventually visiting from Australia.
Your Chateau is beautiful! Thank you for sharing the experiences!
Gosh that’s lots to do best of luck to you all
As brits we moved to Spain it’s wonderful not quite as difficult as your journey.
Your chateau is stunning you will love it
Have you been there?
It’s an amazingly charming place and I think you’ll do it justice. I don’t envy all you have to go through paperwork wise for the next few months. But a year from now… Life will be different!🌺🌺🌺From Missouri.
I saw Stephanies tour of your Chateau and it is stunning, I'm so excited for you, I've subscribed to your channel and will look forward to following you on your journey. Xxx

You’re excited…we’re excited too!
Really lovely plantings in the neighborhood of your stroll.
Thanks for the detailed visa and employment/business explanations, that will be very helpful and a good reference for us that will be following your timeline.
Good luck! Hope the visa paperwork and chateau closing goes off without a hitch!
So excited to be watching and following you from WI, USA. Hoping that you'll be taking us along each step of the way. Congratulations to your entire family on this amazing journey!
I love how natural you both are with the videoing, I’m sure you will, along with your family make this adventure work and I look forward to following you on your adventure, how excited you all must. 🤗 Bon chance my dears!
Thanks for the update, we weren't sure where you were in the process. Really excited for you all and looking forward to seeing your upcoming trip.
This will be so interesting to see. Especially as none of you have lived in Europe, which means the transition is a big deal culturally speaking. It’s the most marvelous Chateau I’ve seen footage of, really beyond imagination also in regards to the great condition it’s in and the breathtaking garden, a huge responsibility to care for and cultivate correctly.
I’m so curious; did you decide to make an offer including the woodland area and adjacent pasture incorporating the irrigation-brook along side the property?
Or did you decide to buy the chateau with the garden only? I remember some concern about potentially having to ruin the hedges of the garden maze for some reason (it was a bit ynclear why, in Stephanies video but seemed an awful shame to do), I’m still curious what that was all about?
Your family home is very charming and your mothers sense of colors and style looks like it will blossom in a more historic setting where lots of paintings and oriental carpets will enhance the already beautiful rooms.
One of the striking things about the chateau was really all the natural light indoors, the many glass doors to the outside and beautiful large windows with amazing views from the elevated location in the landscape! I’m sure when you can finally make the move and settle in in springtime or early summer you’ll be amazed! Remember it’s alot darker this time of year.
Things to consider stocking up on in the US to bring over to France when the time comes is any kind of specialty tools for art, crafts, etc. The selection os much smaller in Europe and far apart, for anyone in the arts, any craftsperson, artisan, it may come as a huge surprize that the easy access to great tools and materials for very affordable prices is just not found across Europe in general. The suppliers are much smaller, much more niched, resulting in smaller stocks of high quality equippment geared towards professionals only and therefore with imports fees and taxes and all, the prices are ALOT higher and the pickings slimmer.
So this is really something to consider both for your DIY reno-needs and artistic persuits. Most american AAA-quality tools can be ordered back home in 220volt compatibility.
Doing that and adding them to your household shipment will save you ALOT of hassle, time and money.
Ordering these things from Amazon in EU is not nessecarily the same as in the US. Also some rescorces in the UK are now very pricey due to Brexit.
Just a tip from a creative expat who’s lived in Europe for decades ;)
Looking forward to seeing you embark on this journey!
Best wishes, and happy belated birthday!
Jo
So happy for all of you! After watching Stephanie's tour of Chateau de Puyvidal it is wonderful to meet the new owners. Looking forward to future updates. Janice from Arkansas USA
Such an exciting new journey! I look forward to seeing everyone's reactions as they experience this magic in real life. I hope the processes go smoothly and that any boundaries are cleared so you can hit the ground running!
Look forward to seeing it again,it’s a wonderful chateau with fabulous gardens
Look forward to following your journey from the beginning.
Exciting times! Love your vision.... and initiative. Well done you. The chateau is breathtakingly beautiful. 🤗
So excited for you and your family. Look forward to following you on this amazing journey. Your chateau is amazing. 🥂
*I get so excited every time you do a vlog as it’s getting closer and closer for the big move, the anticipation of seeing you all there together in this magnificent home and impressive gardens is pure joy to me, I truly love your chateau, and everything Stephanie showed us all in her vlog was breathtakingly beautiful, and to think that this is going to be the place you will all be waking up in every morning for the rest of your lives is mind blowing, I am so happy for you all ♥️🏰👍🏼*
Look forward to watching all your vlogs & your new life in France. I'm sure it will be totally different all together but you'll adjust to it just as I adjust living in Canada from England.
I sawStephanie’s video tours. Did you get to include the gorgeous furniture and art, mirrors etc???
I just found your channel via the Chateau Diaries. So, I'm going back to watch your journey from the start. Excited to see how that all goes and learn from you. I've wanted to move to France and buy a chateau for home and business with my mum and son. I've started an online version of the yet to be physical chateau so I can offer online courses and digital products to help save funds to be able to purchase an actual chateau to renovate, start an animal sanctuary and offer retreats/workshops/classes/events. It's called Chateaux Retreat and it's vegan/eco/ethical creative spiritual lifestyle. Maybe what I've already been doing could help with visa applications.
Exiting time’s ahead thanks for sharing with us, best of luck. 💛🧡💛
Thank you so much for these post, and yes I am sure you all have it right, and above all thank you for bringing us all along with you into your new life in France.
Much love and blessings to all of you.❤️🙏🏻❤️, bye for now Rosemary

What a lovely update, and to see a bit more of Carolina. So glad you will be here soon, even if for a whirlwind couple of weeks. Good luck on the visas!
I have butterflies in my stomach for you! You two really seem like a force!!!
By accident i saw the video from chauteau diaries tour.., and i m here! Wooow it s like a fairytale to me😳😳
Super excited for y’all ! Bon voyage 👋
Hello, so interesting this video. We would want to buy a castle as well in the near future. I was wondering if could tell more about this : do you buy the castle through a business or as a person, are there differences in taxes ? Thank you
Wow great news, hopefully you will have time to vlog with only TWO WEEKS there and sooooooo much beauty to absorb! Congratulations and thanks for the update! 🙏💫💥💕🥰
A lovely little video! Can't help thinking how daunting just furnishing a place that size will be. Still, I think you will quickly figure out a process for getting it all done.
I think it came furnished according to the other video
Wishing you both all the best !! Excited for you !
You can get a second passport so you can still travel.
Also see if one of you qualify for citizenship of a European country via your grandparents or great grandparents. Check were each of them were born and what rules apply for that country. Apparently Italy is rather easy to get via grandparents.
OMG! I am so excited for you all to be there and share your chateau with us.
May God bless you all in everything you need to be able to go and start your new life, your dreams, and all wishes!
Take some American and add to the French and make yourselves exceptional beyond desires.
Thank you, Stephaine, for introducing us to you through The Chateau Diaries! Congrats on your new journey. It is truly inspiring and a dream of ours to be the guardian of a chateau! one day. We can't wait to see more videos, and we wish you much success! PS: It's a shame we never bumped into you as we walked that same loop and lived a few blocks up the way.
You ladies are very smart ..can’t wait to see it unfold and blossom 🌸🌷🌹🌺🌻🌼
Very exciting, what a process, I wish you lots of luck.
Good luck to you girls from England I will follow your journey I have seen your Château it’s beautiful all the luck in the world from wet cold England💕🏰🏰💐
Thinking of you all and hope your trip is going well!!!!
Congratulations! What a wonderful experience it will be for you and your family to live in the Chateau in France. I look forward to your videos in the Chateau 🏰
All the luck to succeed in your endeavour to create a successful business in marvelous France. How is your French coming along. For speaking French is the first requisite in France. Money can buy you a lot but not speaking French will definitely cost you money. Bonne chance.
Waiting on pins and needles for your video of signing and living for 2 weeks at the Chateau!
Thinking of you all and wishing you well on your adventures!! It's amazing that I can watch and share in your adventures even though I don't know you! Have fun, be safe and can't wait to see what your next video holds!! Bon voyage! :)
How very exciting! It must have you on pins and needles. Looking forward to experiencing it with you through your posts .
I watched Stephanie's video introducing you. You guys are adorable. What a cool family venture. Best of luck with this new chapter!
New subscriber , I am originally from Europe , my husband is from Mexico , now both of us are American citizens , love your channel and everything about the chateau and your family . Please share some information how did you find the chateau for sale , which real estate company did you use for that process , who help you about the actual process for the buying and the French language terms . It will be interesting for us to know about the process or details if you could share . Thank you so much !
Wishing you all the best Julia !Wishing you all the best of your endeavours ♥️🙏🥰❤️
Oh gosh, it's Nov 3 - you're all there NOW! I'm so envious!
So great to hear from both of you! Love learning about the process. Excited for your France trip!! 😊
Happy you can take us along☺️
How fabulous! It must be so wonderful to be doing this as a family - discussing plans and dreams and feeding off one another's excitement. I am curious to know why you can only spend two weeks in France? I had understood that you could spend three months without a visa. Bon voyage and I cannot wait to see those reaction shots. :)
hi onedandylion very good question- yes we definitely could spend 3 months without a visa, we are just eager to be able to move there permanently- if we stayed there longer, we would delay our visa submission, which would push out our permanent move until spring of next year- and we would like to start getting the renovations and preparations started as early as possible. The two week trip was just enough for us to enjoy the final signing and arrange things for our absence, and then we hope to be able to move in forever soon!
How Exciting Girl's. X 😊
I wish you all good wishes and God speed.
Fly safe! We look forward to seeng it come together for you! Bright blessings from Newfoundland!
