  • At long last, we have the final episode of our French trip to share with you all! Thank you for your patience as we've been away from RUclips for a while due to the long list of preparations needed for the upcoming big move.
Join the five of us as we get a taste of what daily life might feel like living in a Chateau one day.
In this episode we set up utilities, go grocery shopping in our local grocery stores and farmers markets, explore the cottage and grounds, take long countryside walks, and try our hand at some delicious French recipes. It was a very short amount of time before we had to leave again for the US, but we cherished every minute of it.
    ----------
Regarding the poor quality of our Audio, we have heard your pleas about it and we are so sorry! We hope to do better in the future with better equipment to make everything nice and audible. This trip was very much a documentary-style experience, so we have included subtitles in this episode, and we are working on upgrading our sound equipment for future vlogs.
As of January 2022, we are all here in California, wrapping up our lives and home, and we will be vlogging about some of the considerations and processes of preparing for a move like this, as well as our visa experience. We hope to be in France soon, but for the time being we wish you all a happy and loved-filled 2022.
As always, thank you for your incredible support and enthusiasm!
    Channel Description:
From California to a Chateau in the South of France. Welcome to Dreaming of a Chateau 🏰
Follow the life and adventures of Julia, her partner Caroline, her sister Penelope and her parents as this American family takes a leap of faith to live out a long-awaited dream. Chateau de Puy Vidal is a medieval fortress turned renaissance Castle, and is located in the Charente region of Nouvelle Aquitaine, France.
This channel is dedicated to our love of chateaux, old stones, magic, family and history. We share with you our process of applying to visas, setting up a business, purchasing a property sight-unseen during COVID all before moving across the world.
What happens when your dreams come true?
    Stay tuned.

I am a French viewer and I really admire your determination. Life in a remote corner of the French countryside will be a huge change from California. I can understand why you fell in love with the place. I can see quite well where you are located. I live in Paris but my family is from nearby Dordogne, with our family home just 10 km into the Dordogne departement coming from Angouleme, beau the town of Brantome.

Thank you so much! Hearing from support from French viewers especially means the world to us! The Dordogne is so close close to us, we haven’t been able to explore there yet, but we are very excited to.

It's so gorgeous - we can't wait to see it in person. Even the birds flying in formation to make it a bit more perfect! The semi-hidden vaulted dungeon... dying. For shopping, also check out Auchan - we've had lots of luck there. Mostly, I just love watching your family hang out at *your* *castle*! You'll be back in no time ;) Loved the sneaking in of a bit of art & shots of Paris - and omg - you stayed in Saint Germain des Pres!

Hi Stephen & Sara...just watched your channel , the one you had to say goodbye to family, then Lady of the Chateau popped up. One of the things I love to do is to read some of the comments, and imagine my happiness when I saw your M&M logo. I just had to say hi to you. I “met” Lady at the Château, through Stephanie just as I did you and Sarah.

I'm from San Diego too and can tell you that moving to a place that has seasons, different wild life than you're used too and the stunning gardens you have, will constantly amaze and delight you. Learning to live seasonally will become a constant fascination and you'll feel closer to the land you now have. All of these things are essential for the soul. Your Chateau is wonderful and I wish you the best of all life has to offer and success in all your endeavors.

Thank you! And you are very right! San Diego really has spoilt us, but we are also so excited to see the beauty of the changing seasons. The three of us (Julia, Carolina, and Penelope) lived in New York City and Ohio for many years, but we aren’t ready for country winters. That requires a much better understanding of the challenges of each season.

I think you have a wonderful idea with a gazebo designed just like the one at Helbrunn castle but...I think placing it in the formal gardens would be a HUGE design mistake. Perhaps a more fitting location would be at the end of the lovely grove of trees at the back of the gardens just before a walking path into the forest. Gazebos are so romantic in hidden areas almost like a follie. A secluded area would suit your gazebo better than the open area you spoke of where it would compete for attention with your beautifully designed gardens. Just a suggestion from an admirer of your wonderful home and its incredible grounds.

    • @juliamcgrath3364

Design mistake , very much so. Agree with your suggestions.

This garden is "classified" which means that no one has the right to modify it, it's French law. The owners know it well, and deal with it. At the time when these gardens were designed, the layout may have been different, moreover the terrace and its extension are also a place where one spread out one's success. It is also a question of representation.

I am looking forward to that one -day myself! I do think it will happen though. It all takes time, and maybe when they are living there all the time they can work on it at some point? With so much they have done already! Just setting up enough to really live there has to take so much out of anyone? There is so much more to owning the Chateau than anyone one could imagine. It sure takes courage and strength.
When you have a strong dream I think you can see it happen especially when the whole family is on board with the same dream.

Great video but here is a word of caution,,, it's never a good idea to announce you are leaving the Chateau because there are people out there that might find out to break in to steal valuables or move in for that matter. There is nothing to gain by telling people you're leaving.

Looks like the shutter dogs are missing. I think they were removed for restoration and are in that building you were in at the beginning of this vlog. The shutters need to be secured before storms or else you will end up with broken windows.

Suggestion: please forgo swinging the camera back and forth while walking around. Not only will all the lovely details that you see be totally lost on your viewers but you are inducing a bout of seasickness! Just be more intentional and only highlight a few details... slowly and with closeup shots. You have years to reveal all the details. For instance I enjoyed the brief introduction to your wine cellar... nice overhead shot moving into a mysterious reveal of the cellar through the bars. Would love to see some follow up on this intriguing segment.

Well wow!! You ladies (and gentleman) are brave! But what a stunning château and property, Congratulations! I totally related to your sentiments about being a foreigner in France. As a transplanted (but French) NYer myself, the feelings are spot on. I wish you the very best with settling in. There are ups and there are downs. This said, as a history fanatic and lover of old stones, I would weep for joy in your shoes, despite the nausea on signing day. I follow all the mostly British chateau restoration channels for fun and relaxation, and look forward to keeping track of your progress and plans. Current Parisienne, I am contemplating a future modest home in your very same region. Omg, they left you the clavichord!!! (Or is it a square piano…. Who’s the maker?Musician here!) As I was watching I couldn't help but imagine the cottage to be a small off-road cyclist cafe stop, I imaged a coffee cart and local bakery adding extras, just my imagination. what a beautiful dream come true for you and your family.

For me, much of the attraction of "chateau" videos is less the buildings themselves than the characters in the ongoing drama. That's why Stephanie Jarvis has so many followers and patrons: she realizes that producing videos is her full-time job, and she manages to do it with apparent passion and sincerity. RUclips followers are beasts that need to be fed, or they look elsewhere. Even if you are not presently at the Chateau, I'm sure most of your subscribers would be happy to get regular briefings on how the family is coping with French bureaucracy, selling your house in CA, having second thoughts about this, how it's affecting your relationships...the whole soap opera. Here's hoping we'll see you soon.

Wonderful …… and superb seeing the drone footage. You have a beautiful home - or it will be very shortly when you can be there forever. I am really thrilled for all of you. The next few months will pass quickly so don’t worry about that. You will be back before you know it and then the fun can begin 👏👏

I think it would be a mistake not to restore the chapel as a chapel if you at all plan on hosting any weddings. Even if people may chose to have a ceremony in the garden it's a cold weather or rainy day alternative and honors the original features of the Chateau through history. No matter if you chose to keep it secular, non denominational or find old French Catholic pieces for the decor it's nice to have a space dedicated to meditation/contemplation away from the main house. Also if insulated a perfect place for a piano so it could double as a space for chamber music concerts.
A pretty reception/cloak room with kitchenette and/or wc in the other end would then be useful for all events as well. Such a stunning house and garden! Hope you can stay safe in California and the visa process is smooth. Chateau Puy Vidal is just so splendid, I'm so glad you feel welcomed by thr house and regretted having to leave, that's a GREAT start! ❤️
