I loved retribution paladin, but MAN how their vanilla-design sucked when I think back. Short blessing duration, low mana, Consecration which would just tickle enemies for the cost of A LOT of mana, Seal of Command which could either destroy someone in seconds, or leave you tearing your hair out as your character lamely nudged his mace without effect for the 8th time. When we finally got Crusader Strike I was amazed by the simple fact that I could press a button and solid damage would happen instantly.
In groups or raids I had so many hard times because of my retribution spec and was often forced to go Holy or Protection - which again gave me a hard time getting the gear I actually wanted, which was the damage gear, because the damage classes (understandably) didn't want to roll against their healer or tank for better equipment. This meant that I usually had to search for groups in which the damage roles either weren't warriors, or they already had better gear than they would get in the dungeon/raid anyway. And finding any group back then could easily take an hour.
Yet still, I stayed with my retribution paladin all the way from classic to Cataclysm. I guess I didn't want to let the "Holy Warrior" idea go.

    • @kuhaku9587
      @kuhaku9587 4 года назад +3

You really need to understand how Paladin works to make it work. Seal of command proc 7 time per minute. You want the slowest weapon when using seal of command, if your weapon is fast then you should use the one you get right when you start. Attack scale with att power and spell power so using both pots and consumable make their dps increase significantly which make them a good dps in raid. Actually you can see well played dps be in the top 10 dps meter in 40 raid group. In there is no holy resistance thus your holy damage will always hit for maximum damage. Frost mage? eh no issue. Paladin is much more OP than people realise. Because most people were utter retards in 2004.

Little mention as a horde raider during Vanilla. Raiding without an equivalent to blessing of salvation in a time when threat was everything in group content was a nightmare. To gain anywhere near the same effect as 1 paladin buffing salv on a raid, horde would require 8 shamans, one for each group, limited to 20 yard range of the totem and would have to sacrifice windfury totem for tranquil air, to rub the salt in the wound even harder tranquil air totem only did -20% threat compared to blessing of salvation's 30%! Plus horde didn't even have this totem at the start of vanilla, raiders complained hard until it was eventually added, still Blizzard really wanted Horde to be hard mode for raids. I rerolled belf pally in BC and the power of the pally was very evident, unlimited single target healing with crits heals that refunded themselves, massive armor with parry and block, permanent auras you could easily change, so many powerful blessings for all sorts of classes, aoe tanking for easy dungeons, seal of casino crits for the lulz, going immune at the push of a button for 10 seconds was huge back then too. Some of the best support skills in the game like blessing of protection, blessing of sacrifice and blessing of freedom gave incredible power to your group, plus min maxing in raids with seal of wisdom/light really unleashed raidwide free regen. It was a good time to be a paladin back then, despite how many times you had to rebuff blessings, their strengths far outweight the inconveniences.

Had a char of every class back in vanilla, but my Prot Paladin was the only one I ever got to 60 before BC. Early game leveling was certainly painfully slow of course, but I often paired up with my brother who played a Hunter at the time which helped. Though combining Consecration, Reckoning and Holy Shield did speed up solo leveling especially when pulling multiple mobs. Not to mention Rogues in PvP absolutely hated me for that combo. XD
Dungeons were an interesting challenge, but doable as long as you paid attention to your group and knew what you were doing. All dungeons too, not just undead-heavy ones. Probably varies for other Prot Paladins, but it always gave me a good feeling when my healers told me things ran smoother than with a lot of Warriors they'd previously run with. Not to mention the amusement I got from certain DPS players who would go out of their way to try and screw things up for me only to either fail to reliably pull aggro from me, or for me to let them have their aggro, get squished and helplessly watch the rest of us continue to finish the fight without them (was especially funny how often I came across healers who were actually on board with the latter).
Never had any illusions about raid tanking though. I knew well before I hit 60 that wasn't going to happen. However, the few times I did raid I usually ended up filling a bit of a niche roll by having both Greater Blessings of Kings and Sanctuary to choose from and gave a little bit of support healing. Not to mention I was a little more durable and a little more expendable than the main healers so if an add got loose from one of the tanks for whatever reason I could usually take a couple hits for the other healers before someone got control of it again.
Overall it was a fun experience. Sure I didn't feel like the powerful holy warrior the lore made the class sound like early on, but once you get that AoE going on 6+ mobs at once and shrug them all off you certainly feel a bit powerful.

Any tier sets and good 2 handers you got were due to the raid not needing them at all. you were dead last on gearing priority. And the gear you did get handed to you was to ensure you healed better. Paladin tanking was a absolute meme for more reasons than stated here. No taunt, no crush immunity, running oom fast, needing spell power on plate and hit and mp5, crappy tanking talents. They were a mess. It was not until BC and Wrath were they became something truly special. And then got crapped on again afterwords.

I mained a pally from 2005 on and loved it. And I played it as Ret. I was mainly interested in questing and such, though eventually I joined a guild and healed with him quite a bit. Never tanked with him, we always had a warrior tank. All in all, I found it quite enjoyable to play over the years. For BC I gave him a rest though and switched to a shadow priest and in Wrath a mage (arcane, one button, LOL). It's definitely a great class to level with, I solo'd Hogger and Princess with him. With the free mount and the right professions, you could use him to earn some gold for other characters. It´s true paladins are a support class. That being said.. reckoning, shockadin and even deep ret with the right gear, would deal insane bursts. On my paladin with 50/50 r10 gear and t2 I´m shockadin specced and can deal 2.5-4k dmg every 2 minute in a controlled burst (stun, judgement, divine favour, holy shock). This burst combined with SoC procs and mby a crit here and there was like a huge execute that could be thrown away regardless of the enemy hp. Even in full pvp-healing gear I´d run up to some cocky lock with 50% hp left and just blow him out of existence before I resumed my healing.
Reason why ret are so frowned upon in pvp settings is because people are retardedly gearing them as if they were a warrior. They´re thinking "white hits" instead of thinking "spellpower, int, stam and crit". A paladin with a low mana pool in vanilla is literally a grenade launcher. 2 big bursts then you´re out.

I was a holy Paladin, but wielding a two handed weapon and armor with mixed stats (I chose armor pieces depending on what I felt like I need more of) with a bias towards wanting to deal more damage.
So I played dungeons officially as a damage dealer. My dps output was, in hind sight, of course bad, but not useless.
If more healing was needed, I could effectively help the healer with my own spells. If the main healer went oom, I could heal well enough to bridge the time until the healer was back to 100%. My own mana went down very quickly doing it, but it was enough for the job.
If the tank lost aggro of some trash mops, I would pull them to me, because I was still tanky enough to survive that. Much better then mages, priests etc.
I never raided in vanilla, but I don't feel like my playstyle would have been very useful there.

Remember playing Holy PLD as it was the only thing you would be allowed. Terrible at keeping an entire group alive but at keeping a single target PLDs were gods thanks to the 100% MP return from crit heals...
I have one fresh memory of a run through Stratholme Undead Wing... Baron Rivendare was the worst boss for a PLD healer... that fucking aura. As luck wanted it, I ended up running out of MP in what it seemed an eternal fight... and I got fucking blamed for not keeping people alive... Not my problem if you don't kill the boss faster!

AQ40 was where Paladins shone. In a place where OOM was the norm, Holydins would still have half a bar when Druids and Priests were guzzling pots.

Holy Paladins were PvP gods, every time as horde we saw 3 Holy Palas on the opposite team in AB f.ex. We knew we stood no chance. They were extremely powerful and godmode at healing PvP, especially paired with warriors. In AQ40 and Naxx Holy Palas were insanely good healers that literally never went out of mana. This video should have been 80% about how good Holy Palas were.

I still really preferred the old vanilla beta build of paladins before they had the seals/judgement stuff. Blessings were there, heals were there, but instead of seals and judgement, they had holy strike and crusader strike. Holy strike was basically heroic strike but it added holy damage (and costs mana), crusader strike was sunder armor but increased holy damage dealt to the target (and costs mana). Pretty much all of their vanilla healing/buffing abilities were there.
I think they changed it because it was basically a holy melee version of warriors, so it didn't really feel unique, but I liked it more since you had more than just auto attacks and seal procs.

    Put it this way.
I came in at the end of vanilla and played through till totc25. I raided as ret and holy, and then even Pvp'd as holy spec in tank gear. I womped kids the entire time I played and I might have gotten camped, but I honestly remember being the one who camped people and chased people down for revenge kills. I spent time in the open world arenas and my damage was always really good. So play the class. It's going to be a great time. I was always able to protect myself from world pvp and find PUGs . You will end up leading PUGs because you will find that you have to off heal or switch weapons. *all the time* . So you're going to get geared . And it's going to be awesome when you seal of command proc a horde guy stealing your mobs. You literally melt their face off in one blow.

Also to add to that, the reagents that they needed use up in order to cast the greater versions. Most classes had reagents to use for buffs like this, but since paladins had such a short duration, they burned through them like crazy.

I'd make people do a /beg before I would rebuff them in my old guild. So they all made macro's to beg me for a buff every 5 minutes. It was very satisfying getting that from 40 people in a raid. I had leverage as a healer spec'd into blessing of santuary. lol

Prot pally AoE grinding was THE way to go. Throw in engineering and I promise you this was the best of the best in regards to grinding aside from maybe mage. If you did it right, you could pull continuous large groups of mobs continuously for 10 minutes. That's not an exaggeration and you can do it fairly early on.
