Just to note, the Wandering Isle wasn't specific to Monks, but for Pandaren instead.
After last 3 videos, got Pandaren on the brain apparently.

MoP Brewmaster was the most fun I have ever had tanking. I wish we would go back to that yes it was mega hard for the average player but it was so rewarding. I remember tanking dungeons where healers would groan the moment they saw a monk tank because “they are so squishy” then they saw me and how I took like no damage

I never got why people thought monks were squishy. You just had to manage your staggered damage, heal and use defensives appropriately. I did see some absolutely awful examples of monk tanks, but the vast majority were totally fine. I both tanked with my own monk and healed monks with my shaman. I honestly preferred healing them rather than warriors.

When it got pruned in legion a lot of the fun was gone. Now in BFA its a relaxed ride without much difficulty, like the original monk on autopilot. The big issue with monk tanking that scared many people was the seeming lack of big get out of jail cooldowns (like pally bubble, druid savage defence etc), coupled with low max HP. I know in my raid team they were initially skeptical if I would survive progression raiding as a monk. It took the community a long time to understand that (good) monks took a lot less damage than other tanks.
Levelling was broken as, from someone who pursued a monk from level 1 the second MoP went live, between being able to tank roll dungeons and then every 10 levels (plus daily) getting the bonus EXP buff that came with our training quests, we were easily able to rush up to higher levels.
I think the bigger issues were simply that it was different, and people struggled to deal with different.

Thank you for video, really enjoyed strolling down memory lane. Having played multiple classes from Vanilla to now, I can say without a doubt that Monk is my favorite and plays a large factor into why I consider MoP to be my favorite expansion. The class just so unique and diverse, had a blast with Windwalker throughout it's entirety despite the constant development; miss it very much.
Bit of fun facts from that awesome era:
-Windwalker had undergone 3 Mastery's throughout MoP's duration, landing on Bottled Fury v2 with Tigereye Brew causing 3% per stack, 30% at 10 (6% per stack, 60% at 10 during WoD)
-The T15 Windwalker 4pc bonus seen in the video was previously the specs Mastery, Bottled Fury v1 - it was swapped when Monks were using the Rune of Re-Origination trinket to snapshot Mastery to gain large amounts of damage during the Tigereye Brew window; previously the set bonus gave a chance to gain an additional stack of Tigereye Brew
-Dematerialize - when the Monk was stunned they would go immune for X seconds - made Mistweaver extremely broken in PvP (which is ironicly has been their bane since)
-Fists of Fury used to stun, multiple times in fact should the opposition choose to try and break the stun to run (although it didn't do the crazy damage like it does til WoD)
-Touch of Karma used to reflect 100% of the Windwalkers health of the damage taken, which you can imagine the large outcry from the playerbase that wanted to just burst everything but instead were punished for not heeding the mechanic/animation
-Paralysis had a positional requirement, becoming a longer CC if used behind the target
-Windwalker Blackout Kick used to heal themselves when attacking an enemy from the front, and apply a DoT when attacking from behind (or glyphed)
-Jab was the Monks primary generator and would change icons and sound effects depending on the main hand weapon of the Monk
-The Swift Reflexes passive would cause the Monk to perform a low damage attack upon parrying an attack, which caused a bit of problems with achievement runs such as Iron Dwarf Medium Rare
-Speaking of passives, Windwalker had a Passive called Sparring which stacked up to 3 times to increase Parry chance by 15% (5 per stack), along with a Glyph that had a chance to deflect magic for the same stack amount
-Brewmaster Black Ox Statue would provide an absorption shield depending on the amount of damage the Brewmaster had dealt, allowing the user to shield every party member (before it was turned into Stoneclaw Totem)
-Dizzying Haze granted a 3% chance for the enemy to miss their attacks and secondary way to apply Keg Smash's debuff (for Breath of Fire)
-Monk had a buff called "Legacy of the Emperor" which increased stats, while Windwalker had an additional buff "Legacy of the White Tiger" that increased Crit
-Provoke can/could be used negatively to troll, like speeding up Armsmaster Harlan's Whirlwind/Bladestorm, causing Thok and Garalon to run faster to their Focused Target, etc.
-Expel Harm became a spammable heal should the Brewmaster fall below 35%, making a really geared/good one almost unkillable to the high stacks of Thok
-Tiger Strikes passive used to cause Monks have faster auto attacks and 4 additional auto attacks per stack - there's irony to had here as after it's change and removal Windwalker has been faced with the problem of Fists of Fury causing less auto attacks which makes the spec benefit less from Auto Attack related procs ala Trinkets, Corruptions, etc

The way belts work in martial arts is essentially your mastery over different forms, and knowledge as well as discipline. From the dojos I was taught at, it went from White->Orange-->Yellow-->Green-->Red--->Brown--->Black
You'd get stripes on your belt based on your progress of your belt, and after you'd get 4 stripes, you'd take a test to move onto the next belt. The test would usually be memorization of forms, holding stances, sparing with your peers of the same belt, or sometimes your seafoo depending on the class (seafoo = teacher).

StormEarth&Fire wasn't a CD in MoP, it was changed to a cleave CD in legion.
In MoP it didn't have a CD and you would cast them on mobs with a max of 2. It was a part of how you would cleave and AOE. SEF was a huge part of WW game play and was considered really difficult to use effectively and took a lot of planing and forethought.

Monk’s been my main and favorite class since MoP (Mained a Paladin in Cata). MW was (and still is) my favorite healer. Same goes for BrM and it’s fast paced juggling of buffs. I loved how different and unique it was to all of the other healers. Legion was terrible for both BrM and MW since they removed what made them unique and fun. MW was made to be the same as a regular healing/Resto Druid and BrM was made to be similar to any other tank. Also, removing Chi from Brewmaster and Mistweaver was one of the worst decisions they made for the class in my opinion. It completely gutted the flow and choice of the specs. Some viewed it as liberating, but it ruined the aspect of choice between abilities and the overall feel of the specs. I had a similar issue with Paladin, but I near they are getting Holy Power back in Shadowlands. Here’s to hoping that they do the same for Monk.

The months before MoP dropped, I did the "Invite a Friend" thing and had I thnk 80 levels saved up. So once my Pandaren got off of the Turtle, I went to orgrimmar and was level 80 in about 10 minutes :)
Loved the Monk, loved the Pandaren, loved MoP. Was the last expansion I really played, as WoD just took WoW out back and put it down. Didn't come back till Classic was release.

Everyone slept on the Monk in MoP, but I was loving it! My only regret is I enjoyed WW so much, I never got around to playing the other specs during this time, as well as other Classes that are now pretty legendary in MoP like Destro and Ele; I have since gone back and played these specs... but for Monks I just have too much fun on WW to give the other specs a go.

this made me remember windwalker mastery being changed every patch. combobreaker procs ,chi / energy spheres, faster tigereye brew generation come to mind immediately. still loved it and really looking forward to being able to choose between onehander and staff/polearm again.
if i remember correctly, they gave 1handed +damage and 2handed +attack speed (also you only had to get your hands on one weapon that way, which would be really good with the bfa droprates of weapons)
whilst being at it, do you remember not being allowed to use heirlooms in the pandaren starting zone because you had to send it per mail, but those characters arent part of the factions

    • @tdmc6428
      @tdmc6428 4 года назад

I think when he said they come out with good gear that doesn’t matter due to heirlooms, they were referring to the fact that everyone had access to better gear by the time you leave thanks to heirlooms. But yes, pandaren didn’t and still don’t have mailboxes which stopped them

I Mist weaver during mop . It was so fun I switched from my priest that I had been playing since tbc. Extra mobile with damage to healing conversion. It was so good. Then in legion, instead of leaning into the fantasy they completely remade the class in to just another healer and stripped e everything that made it fun. Sure it made it easier to pick up for new people but it wasn't as fun.

I think monk design was spot on. I did not really like the healer spec but I dont really play healers in general. I loved monk tanking, you could really tell if a monk tank was a skilled player or just a random button smasher. And WW monk was really fun in pvp, countering the crap out of those boring frostmages and feral druids :D

  • @AirshipFury
    @AirshipFury 2 года назад

I was a MW monk main back in MoP, with a resto druid alt. While MW surely took more effort to play well than resto, never running out of mana, and being able to fistweave was infinitely more fun. Ring of Peace was actually quite a good external damage mitigation tool for tanks! Just let the tank round up a big old deathball, RoP, then roll in for RJW and fistweaving to help mow down the ball. The biggest downside to MW healing was the lack of control you had over your heals. Renewing mist's "smart" heal wasn't all that smart and constantly reminding people to step on your balls (mastery) was awkward.

I’ll be honest. I only had a monk for my Herald of the Titan toon. Completely OP even without any tier gear and it was good for just about any role though I played as healer. I really got into researching BiS gear for it, since all the guides at the time did not have an update for monk. It was fun, but it also took up my monk slot, and I already had a bunch of alts that were raid ready.
Plus I’ve never leveled her beyond 80 due to the fact idk if someone wants to make another Herald of the Titans run. I’ve done it 3 times so far, in addition to my first time, so it honestly makes sense to keep her there.

Monks never interested me before the recent 100% XP boost, and I thought It would have been cool to level a class because I don't really see purpose of doing BFA endgame content anymore. So I started a gnome monk few nights ago and let me tell you, I had a blast because I wasn't even aware of me staying up all night leveling, but I just did naturally. Time flies when you are having fun, on top of that monks get 50% exp boost which made it even faster. What really pulled me in is the rotation and the mastery that gives % dmg if you don't repeat the same ability in a row, and you can only use whirling dragon punch when your fist of fury and risen sun kick is on cd, it is so rewarding to press it for some reason. :D Overall It really got me out of the boring aspects of BFA. Next Is DK, I haven't played a dk before ever.

I main a monk in retail since I joined in 2015. I used to be a hunter main in private servers, but hunters were such no brain classes and I hated their pets. I experimented with druid for a bit, but I didn't like the feel of it. I wanted to have a class that was like a druid, had similar specs, wasn't all about nature and trees. I liked the aesthetic and feel of the monk, so I went with that when making my first character on retail. I have so much gametime poured into my female blood elf monk, I love her. :D
    She's Sunbursts-DraenorEU. :)

The initial version of the monk class quest that gives the buff enlightenment use to be much much better. It use to give you 50% increased EXP gain for 1 hour instead of mastery, and the duration could stack. I remember only leveling my monk on the weekends and simply flying through levels with heirlooms and a 8 hour 50% exp buff. However, if you died, the buff was removed. Pretty harrowing to risk wiping in dungeons groups as a tank.

You should remake the video now that Classic MoP is on the horison , you could include such things as loggs from back in the day comparing the 3 diffrent specs to their counterparts in the 3 diffrent tiers.
You could draw examples from AoE fights, ST fights, Cleave fights and showcase what each spec was good at.
You could for example show world farming, elite soloing . (For example WW and BM were godlike at AoE farming because of their CC/burst dmg and MW could AoE farm aswell very safely due to alot of HoTs and decent dmg)
You could showcase how well monks were doing in BGs and Arena , i belive theres still rank information to be found from MoP days.
Would love to see a more detailed video hyping up Classic MOP!

I remember brewmaster monks could either be awesome in the right hands, or terrible in the wrong ones. My raid’s MT was a brewmaster, and he was great at it... but in another raid group I was in, the raid leader would try and brewmaster tank but he’d never keep shuffle up, and he’d get wrecked and then blame the healers. We finally just had to inform him that he was horrible at brewmaster tanking 😂
Also, it still cracks me up to this day that Tauren can be monks.

One more funny part was the vengeance exploit monks could use, using diffus magic and the 90% dmg reduction spell (can`t remember name) at 0.1 second before you get hit buy a hard ability. It would skyrocket your vengeance to max because the hit registrered as if it killed you and then you could summon tiger and have 3.000.000 dps and top the meter. Method used vengeance exploit aswell on guardian druid on klaxxi to top the dps meter as tank.

I miss mists brewmaster if played right they were some of the best tanks you could get. One of my raid leaders hated the fact that I would ask to experiment. Spirit kings being the first time when I said I’d take the stack mechanic on my own, she was pissed but it worked every time. Don’t remember all the fights but there were some where another group we would just run a single monk to tank.
