In regards to packing the pipe, test the draw as you pack it. Don't wait until it's full to discover it's not to your liking. Conventional wisdom says it should have a draw like sucking water through a straw, and I agree. If it's like pulling a milkshake, that's too tight.

Great stuff !! Dont forget NEW PIPES are harder to smoke (all around/go slow ) they burn hotter and do not taste the best until broken in and have a cake built up. I also suggest AVOID buying too much tobacco (watching youtube doesnt help.. lol ) in the beginning (30 yrs on the pipe here ) Buy bulk 1 oz at a time work through it and try a few diff options ie , Vapers, Virginia, English, Aro, OTC ,ect that way your not over invested (like alot of us ) in tobacco you really dont care for i suggest Lane 1Q , Boswells Northwoods and the one your currently smoking "early morning pipe " as a great starting point.Your own taste will determine the path you follow not the millions of reviews or the hype over HARD to get blends. Wise men sit and ponder , Fools rush in . Cheers .All the best Happy Holidays .

Thanks Curt, yea I’ve been tryin TONS of different tobaccos, that’s def good advice to not buy too much. Lol the temptation is hard, but I’ve been getting a lot of lower quantities as of late to taste more. Cheers!

Great videos... I've been smoking a pipe for around 20 years but always enjoy learning new things... I usually leave mine in the tins.. I usually smoke it fast enough before it dries out... and its easier to transport in the tin too.. nightcap is also a very good tobacco too

so i just wanna say this is maybe the best beginner pipe video i've seen. they all told me to pack it super light and i did not like that. just smoked my first bowl. did it too light. also got like a burning pepper bite on my tongue. packed it more like the draw from a cigar this time. worked better and tasted better but still having trouble staying lit. i'll be a pro one day like my granddad. anyways. thanks for the info bro.

you can pack at three times before you fill it. so the first time you pack it you do it lightly then the middle a little bit tighter and then the last pack you can do it quite tight. so you got three levels of tightness in the top one is the one where you want to put a bit more pressure.

  • @edmundradziewicz5165

Love the video, I'm a new pipe smoker age this video has helped me. Would you consider making a video of a complete session, packing, lighting, smoking with no talking at all? I can't seem to find a video like that anywhere. Im a visual learner and just want to see exactly how people smoke, how frequently they draw, how much smoke is produced, etc etc from start to finish without distractions like you're smoking alone at home. I know everyone has different methods and ways of doing things but it would really help me out a lot.

I leave my tabacco in the tins but store it in a large humidor that’s heated/cooled. It has worked great so far and it keeps a consistent humidity.

  • @adz-ql6kv

if you want to avoid tongue bite. dry out your tobacco. take the whole can dump it on some paper towels spread it out for about three hours or when it just starts to go crispy. from then I will never get tongue bite. tongue is caused by the moisture in the tobacco turning to steam because you're not heating it up hot enough to burn. you're trying to smoke it lightly so you can get the aromas tobacco with a high moisture content will produce steam. and that's what's bite in the end of your tongue. so like I said before if you're tobacco is dry. not too dry but almost dry you won't get tongue bite.

My first pipe was unwittingly a Missouri Meerschaum I picked up on my way through Chester, Illinois, birthplace of Popeye. It sat on the shelf for two years before I decided I wanted to try smoking for the first time. I thought it was some Chinese tchotchke I picked up in a tourist trap shop. Much to my surprise, it was a MM made in America so of course I had to start with it. It undoubtedly made me second guess my desire to smoke that first time but after the second and third bowl, I was hooked. That cob taste goes away with use and for $5 it's been well worth the experience. Don't let it deter you.

I like bigger bowls, not necessarily deep, because I like Prince shapes, but .75" is about as small as I'll go. My favorite pipes are .8 or higher. Morgan Bones pipes are great pipes for the money if you don't want to use cobs. Peterson's are solid works too. Cobs have their place, they are good for aromatics and tobaccos that ghost a pipe (like Lakelands), and whenever smoking around water: in the rain, boating, fishing, swimming, hot tubs, etc. Another great video.

Keeping your tobacco in the tins is fine. Drop in a humidor button or a clean fresh slice of orange peel. The buttons work better for larger containers. The peel will do better for small tins as it won't over moisten the Tobacco.

@@TheGingerPiper I think aromatics are harder to smoke and enjoy. By design they are better for the non-smokers in the room than the smoker themselves. I started out on English blends and didn't start into aromatics for my first ten years. That being said, I enjoy lots of aromatics now, especially ones that don't overpower the tobacco taste and have consistent taste throughout the bowl. Sadly, many of them lose flavor quickly, but here's a few suggestions worth trying: Vauen's Oxford Blend (Earl Grey flavor), Samuel Gawith's Grousemoor (a unique light lakeland), and Solani's X: Sweet Mystery (berries, great room note), Sutliff's Molto Dolche (smells like Playdough, can be quite wet), Lane Limited's Andullo (unique fermented cigar leaf), Cornell & Diehl's Crooner, and I agree with The Smoove Piper, Mixture #79 is one I've been enjoying lately (root beer like flavor). Many of the old codger blends have great added flavors too: Sir Walter Raleigh, Half & Half, Ready Rubbed, Prince Albert, and the Captain Black blends. Starting out, don't be afraid to try any tobacco. There are so many types of pipe tobaccos out there, and like with food, your palate may change over time, so it's also good to occasionally try ones you didn't like in the past.

I have had tongue bite with certain tobaccos, but not all aromatics. I smoke an aromatic and have never had tongue bite from it. And you are smoking it wrong. You must exhale put the corner of your mouth while also blowing some air back through the pipe. Not separately. The best smoking tobaccos are the worst smelling to those around you. The good ones are very cool smoking a d have almost no flavor, but extremely nice to smoke. Just doesn’t smell good.
