    That was wonderful to hear about your Grandfather. Mine was a tobacco farmer in Cyprus. I never knew him to smoke a pipe, but I do remember when I was a boy that my grandmother would bring him a tray of cigars and cigarettes every afternoon for him to choose what he fancied. My great grandfather (also a tobacco farmer in Cyprus) would roll his own, despite the fact that the British wouldn't let him (you had to sell the tobacco to the British, then buy whatever they sold you back). They'd come every week, charge him his fine and he'd just carry right on.

    I can honestly say that no one in my family history that I know of has ever smoked a pipe. I am the first of my kind, as far as my ancestors, that I know of. My original inspiration came from Malcolm Guite. I saw a video, which randomly came up in my RUclips feed and he made pipe smoking and reading sound so relaxing. I have reached a part in my life’s journey where I am beginning to research and try different hobbies. So far, I’m loving the hobby of pipe smoking and I’m trying to be very intentional about it. I very much enjoy your videos and I find them very informative and also motivational. I hope you continue to put out good content. My Grandad was also a utility pipe smoker. He liked a cheap, straight billiard, 9mm filter pipe, with any pouch of tobacco he could get at the store. Tried to get him to try other blends, nicer pipes, but he wasn't keen. Clean his pipe with a pen knife and put a hole through the bottoms. Even taped the hole to keep smoking. Once he burnt up a pipe, he'd throw them away, and I'd rescue them from the bin like buried treasures. He also made his own filters out of paper napkins. I could never abuse a pipe the way he did, bless. I miss him a lot. Thank you for this page and this video in particular. God bless you, sir.

      @ I will warn you…this isn’t an easy transition. You will have to deal with the withdrawal so your chest might feel tight , you will briefly develop a cough for a little while. You will have to completely retrain yourself how to smoke. Pipe smoking isn’t about the nicotine, it’s about sitting down for a while and enjoying the tobacco slowly. You’re not gonna be able to smoke your pipe as quickly as you can and it’s gonna magically satisfy you. You also have to fight the urge to inhale. Pipe and cigar smokers smoke because they want to , not because they HAVE to. The way I did it, I thought about when was my favorite times to smoke. I enjoyed a smoke after meals, so I made sure I smoked after eating. But make sure you have at least 30 minutes to enjoy it. Over time , you will learn when it’s convenient for you to smoke and when it isn’t. Once you get used to not feeling the urges, it becomes a lot easier. You figure out that you won’t have the Nic fits anymore.

It has now grown into a thriving online community with meetings, forumpipes, forum tabccaos, etc. There are several older members who smoked one tobacco for decades. Chris, I enjoyed the story of your grandfather and his pipes. I heard that my great grandfather smoked Sir Walter Raleigh out of a corn cob pipe. When one broke or wore out, he would replace it at the local drugstore.

    I do feel like there's one type of major pipe smoker you missed
    the contemplator or comfort pipe smoker
    They usually get maybe one or two blends and one specific pipe that they have, and it's their thinking pipe. It's the thing they go to when they are having a bad day and need to relax, or when they need to mull over something and get their brain working. It's almost ritualistic being a part of their routine for the creative process. I fall very much into that category, pipes are somehow so much better than anything else to get your brain working and I don't know why.

    • @bveracka
      @bveracka 7 лет назад +1

      I couldn't agree more! The breathe method was truly a gift! It took me a while to get down (about two months). But when you finally figure it out, eventually one day it'll just click. Anytime I deviate from it and go puff-puff-puffing, my pipe almost always overheats, gurgles, and goes out before it's hit the heel. It's funny how I thought smoking a pipe would be so simple when I first began, but after nearly 6 months smoking at least one pipe every day, I've learned that it's truly an art-not a 1+1=2 type thing. Also, just like any art form it simply takes time to develop a feel for doing it and get pleasant results from it. You can rush it but all you'll get is frustrated and tongue-bitten. One other good piece of advice is to try and stick to just a couple of blends, and stay away from flakes, cakes, plugs, and ropes/twists until you can smoke your pipe consistently.

    • @lowfunction6136
      @lowfunction6136 7 лет назад +2

      Brandon Alan I see that this thread is from two months ago. By way of an update, my experience has improved markedly, as far as packing the bowl just barely tight enough and internalizing the breath method. The adventure continues! Happy piping.

    • @bveracka
      @bveracka 7 лет назад +1

      lowfunction 613, Good to hear! Yes, filling or packing is very important too. I like to say "fill" a bowl because you don't want to pack it tightly, as you've learned. For blends with a heavy casing and very dense flakes (even well-rubbed flakes), I do the "gravity fill". With drier, lightly-cased, and ribbon blends, I always tamp it down before lighting using gentle pressure. Even during smoking I evenly tamp around the edge and less so on the center. But regardless, always tamp gently. Muttn' has a great video about that technique. Finally, one great place to learn and talk about piping is Pipe Smoker's Forum. Anyways I don't wanna keep rambling on ya, heh. Best of luck to you on your journey and most of all, enjoy!

    Always nice to hear storys of how the old generation smoked a pipe back then. My grandfather smoked a pipe in the 60's and 70's but then he quit smoking. He is still alive and he gifted me all his old pipes 4 years ago, I was so happy. The first thing I did was cleaning em up and making them nice and ready to be smoked again. His 7 pipes are now in my collection, I smoke them from time to time and keep them in good condition. And I have one pipe that I have from my father, he was always a non smoker but he tried smoking a pipe around 20 years ago when I was 10 years old, but it wasn't for him. With 13 I started smoking cigarettes in school and that was the time when he gifted me his pipe because he said that smoking cigarettes is very bad for me and that I should better smoke a pipe instead. I still smoked cigarettes but from time to time I smoked his pipe and the rest is history. Now I don't smoke cigarettes anymore....

    Talking about your grandfather brought back memories for me. My grandfather smoked a pipe too. I have no idea what he or any of his pals smoked but as a little boy I can plainly remember all these old boys cutting their tobacco from blocks of really dark, hard lumps of solid tobacco. Then rubbing it out and stuffing it into their pipes then being shrouded in clouds of smoke. All of them used matches and the village seat where they did their smoking was surrounded by a sea of used matches. Like you say from your granddad, none of them really looked after their pipes. I can clearly remember them knocking out the pipes after they had smoked them on the metal arm of the bench they all sat on. If one became blocked. Simple, all of them did the same thing and reach into a pocket and produce a penknife and start reaming out the pipe until the blockage was cleared. Nothing high tech for them. If the pipe broke....... get another one. Nothing fancy for these old boys. Life was so much simpler in those days. God only knows what they would think of the situation today.

    Thanks for Sharing your grandpa's story... enjoyed it... I am almost two months in. So far I have purchased about 6 pipes and have almost ten tins. My great grandfather was part of the last category, he owned a hardware store and he would always have a pipe in his hand. But he had several pipes and he would constantly set one down when he needed to and then go pick another one up that he had set down before and smoke that one. Ended up having dozens of pipes laying around the store at one time.

    Another fine blended vid my friend. I too, was inspired by Tolkiens works and by the many men of that era. I would consider myself more of the connoisseur aficionado type. After many years of one dimensional cigarette smoking, I am enjoying the wide world of blends and tobaccos that the pipe offers and can not get enough. While I tend to lean more towards Savinelli's, I don't fancy any brand or shape over another but what is more pleasing to the eye and comfort to the hand. Sweet smokes amigo 😎

    I'm about to start. I've ordered my first pipe and tobacco.
    Here's why I want to smoke a pipe. I think it's got a lot less health risks associated with it compared to cigarettes. But mainly because of the contemplative nature of the practice. It seems that every pipe smoker I see here on RUclips is always laid back, composed and thoughtful. I practice meditation somewhat regularly, I also smoke cigarettes (unfortunately). I figured this would be the perfect way to continue my meditative practices and get my nicotine fix at the same time in a somewhat safer way.
    I also think pipe smoking is an important part of human history. I'd like to see it continue into the future and continue to be a part of who we are as a species. There's also a world of craftsmen, artists, tobacco growers and independent business owners that rely on people still using pipes. I'm happy to be a part of their continued existence.

    I have exactly the same influences. My grandpa always seemed so relaxed and content when he had his pipe. I was quite young when he passed, but whenever I think of him, there’s always a pipe present. Years later I stumbled into the world of Tolkien when trying to get into reading books. I had never finished a single book until I picked up the Silmarillion, and boy, I could just NOT put it down! Plowing straight through, onto the Hobbit, then LOTR… I was hooked, and the pipe smoking probably had a lot to do with it. It reminded me of my grandpa and made the Tolkien world a cozy and somewhat familiar place! ❤
    Now I will enjoy my handful of pipes for relaxation mainly, along with a good book, a pint of stout or a glass of whisky, or one walks in the forest or on the mountain.
    My pipe is a companion for whenever I am free and relaxed. 😌

    your story sounds a lot like mine. some of my fondest memories are of my Grandpa smoking his pipe, especially on the holidays. he smoked Carter Hall because where we live, there aren't very many options for pipe smokers unless you order something or buy it when out of town. i started smoking a pipe while in the army and supplies were fairly easy to obtain. when my Grandpa passed away, my uncle gave me all of his pipes and pipe holders, etc. because I was the only other person in the family to smoke pipes, they are some of my prize possessions even though most of them were just cheap pipes from the drug store. I like to smoke when I can but it's usually when I'm doing some kind of outdoor work, fishing, camping, etc. I don't know, I just like it, can't really say why. But, I'm glad I found your channel, it's very informative and I can somewhat relate.

      Johnny B. - I don't know if there quality has improved, or declined since my grandfather smoked them, but, I suspect being a budget pipe it's probably not on par with a higher end pipe. 👍👍👍

      I was actually referring to the materials used. Materials used fifty years ago may make it an average pipe today. Still as you say, With age...

    Great video as always. Enjoyed you sharing the story of your grandfather and showing the picture of him. Would love to see a video of you smoking a favored blend out of his pipe. Thanks again for sharing your expertise with our community.

    Your grandfather sounded very splendid. I only have about 14 pipes and honestly that’s all I really need, I actually want to get rid of one. There’s no need to have hundreds of them, that’s just hoarding at that point. This was a very interesting video and I loved the story about your grandfather!

    I think I'll be a specific-utility pipe smoker. I smoke only at night/midnight and only on the weekend/special days. I also don't have a lot of money with me so I'll pretty much stick with hopefully 2 inexpensive pipe for the time being and getting 2 blends of tobacco.
