Woah! I literally can do lip trills way better after your video! On high notes I used to push more air to get it to make a sound up there, but now, it's way easier and I know not to use too much air now as well! Thnx!
This was good. Really, really good actually. As someone who's gone from not being able to hold a note, to being a deathmetal vocalist, to *then* learning to sing - you can imagine my diaphragm control was almost an all-or-nothing type of thing. After learning that I could actually sing I've found that not going full-blown belting or not having enough support were my biggest issues so I decided to try lip trills and this confirmed the issues. Watching this video plus a few practice runs and there's major improvement already. Thanks a bunch!
I could never get a complete scale lip trill before and kind of gave up on them or thought I just wasnt capable of fping them. Now after stidying this lip trill video I can do them in sll the different forms you demonstrated! There is hope afterall! Lip trills arrnowy faborite exercise warmup. Actually, I love all of your voice exercises!!
Genius explanation! I saw this exercise on a different channel and was reminded of an Austin Powers film, a little comical! I remember I used to do this without rhyme or reason as a toddler to amuse myself when no one was in ears reach and I grew out of that as you get to those classes at the point kids look to make fun of each other. You explain this so scientifically, yet in a common sense simplied way so I don't have to over think this, and with options I had no idea were useful. Your wrong examples given are so helpful, only someone teaching a long time throws those in as samples as easily as you do. Without a doubt you are a pro vocal teacher I look forward to studying with. Your prices are so practical, I know I will not have an excuse not to sign up for more than one, greatfully I might add. Adding all of these to my daly routine, sometimes i dont know which exerciese to do. this offers so much clarity. Loving the trills and sustained. I notied i've been yawning a lot during wamrups due to some strain and bad breathing in the past. Aiming to get more air and confidence in the runs! thank you! GLHF everyone
I have done some singing on the love of development of vortex winds through cavities with vowels which I'm still fine tunning along with a right Lung missing and part of my intestine sticking out i find courage to still sing thank you so much i get overwhelmed but I'm comitted to sing at any cost.
Oh wow! I almost can't believe it. I'm a beginner singer (I saw your channel on reddit! You recommended me to take a look at your channel), and I've always had the problem of either pushing too much air and just getting out of breath in like 3 seconds of lip trills, or I end up with the 3rd problem of the lip trills turning into... nothing after a couple of seconds. But I just tried your "push up your cheeks technique" and immediately it fixed all of my problems; it's like the lip trill is just the most natural feeling/action ever it took literally no effort at all, I just can't believe it. It's so different from when I tried to "force" a lip trill normally, haha. Thank you! Unfortunately I still don't know how to recreate it without artificially pushing my cheeks up with my hands.
What a great report! To continue the lip trill without hoisting up your cheeks, loosen your hands little by little under your cheeks. If the trill stops, go back to lifting the cheeks. Maybe your lips are tight. Actually, you can still benefit from the exercise (balance of airflow and resistance) even if you lift your cheeks!
Wonderful tips for trill alternative, for those like me that can’t lip trill.I would like to see the alternative trills applied to vocal exercise.thank you!
Thank you so much, Victoria 🤗 I hated this thrills, because nobody from teachers could explain for what it 😅 The answer was: "its nice for warm-up" 🤷🏻♀️😅 Especially big thanks for tips about tongue position in this exercise 🙇🏻♀️ It was my mistake - my tongue was "in the air", and made tention on high pitch
For years, I also didn't know the benefits of this exercise but luckily I did and it helped get my strength back so I'd be ready for gigs after the lockdown ended!
Wow, thank u so much!!!!!❤❤❤. I have been struggling so hard to sing, and in pain afterwards. This opened my throat and kept it open. It was the perfect exercise. Thank you, thank you, I was truly thinking I should give up.
Dear Victoria, you have given me faith in the usefulness of lip trills again. I was told by someone recently that they do no good at all and advised me to stop (she meant for anyone, not just me). But all coaches use and teach them and so, as one of your subscribers I thought it was time to find out what YOU think. And Victoria, you have restored my faith in the importance of trills. I have never been able to do the tongue trills, so I stick with the lip ones. I love the way you say how to place the tongue, although whilst practising with you just now, I found it tricky, so I started a trill and then instantly put my tongue in place (behind my teeth) and it seemed to work. Thank you so much for your time in explaining this, not to mention the resistance in the abs!
I watched a lot of your videos. There's still a lot more to go.I want to watch your amazing tips the hole night🤗 Good explanation and always fun to listen to you.I totally love when you clap on your support area 😂while explaining what to do🤩😉
It is so good to learn not only the proper way to do it but also the reasons why we do it and how it connects to real singing. I am a total beginner, this is the first video I saw of yours and it already separates you from the rest of the teachers who just tell students what to do but not why to do it... I have one problem you didn't mention there, though. Whenever I try to do a lip trill, I absolutely must wet my lips with my tongue before I try, otherwise it just doesn't work, no matter how much air I push out... Is this common? I see you (and others) do it without any need to lick the lips before. I am probably doing something wrong but I don't know what. Any advice?
Interesting! I have never heard this. Maybe your lips and mouth get tight without the licking of your lips? I would toggle back and forth, with & without. I also would not worry too much about it since it is an exercise for balance of airflow and resistance, besides helping with registration.
Thank you Victoria for a very helpful, informative and practical video. I find lip trills to be very useful and worth taking seriously. Your thorough explanation will help me to move to the next level of lip trill application. I wonder if you have any thoughts on why I can become a little dizzy or light headed on lip trills, especially within a couple of minutes of starting. My expectation is that this will improve in the coming months. Your comments would be welcome. Thanks again for your brilliant video. David.
Getting dizzy happens to some singers in the beginning, but it usually goes away when they stop over-breathing (taking in too much air). Lip trills do not take a lot of air.
Thanks for the exercises, I will definitely use them! they help me find my support. I also wanted to ask about belting. Is it something that can be done healthily or is belting bad for our vocal folds? Would love to see a video on belting and powerful notes, cause I'm really interested in the topic.
Belting, just like any kind of singing, can be done healthily or unhealthily. The healthy way is to sing it as a robust chest mix with good support and a "forward" vowel. The unhealthy way is to push up excess vocal weight, squeeze and outright shout. There is more to it than that, but this can be a start. I don't have a video on belting yet, but it is on my list.
Thankyou for the video. The tongue position tip made all the difference. Is it normal to get dizzy and have a tingling sensation in the face? Also, when i get low it makes me want to cough.
A slight variation is if you really relax the lips during the trill and hold a finger at each side of the mouth it will really engage the lower abdominals more so than if the lips are pursed. I toggle this btw phrases in songs that I'm finding troublesome and the difference is huge.

I have to say I don't know. It's okay, if lip trills don't work for you, try the alternatives I give.
