    This helped a ton! Thank you so much! My breathy voice is mainly due to lack of energy. I think because I worry about the neighbours, I try to sing quietly and then I end up breathy. I tried singing with more energy and ignore what neighbours think and my voice sounded much better and it was much more comfortable to sing, my throat didn't hurt and I found I could follow the rhythm and pitch of the song more naturally. Still need a lot of work but this is step forward.

      Lol. It can feel a little awkward if you live in close quarters like an apartment building, though mine seems fairly well insulated for sound. I do get some looks from my pets though. Lol.

    I was confusing "closure" with "straining". So not wanting to "strain" I relax the vocal fold and go breathy. But after you've explained that conscious chricothyroid muscle use is the key, it fixed instantly.

    Really enjoyed this video! I had just previously commented on having this problem as a younger person and your talk.added some insight.
    In my case think the causes were lack of physical energy and trouble accessing the needed abdominal support for my breath. At the time, as an adolescent i was experiencing a lot of anxiety and upper chest breathinging was my typical breathing pattern throughout the day, contributing to anxiety attacks. Later, I ultimately mastered my anxiety by mastering my breath and learning to breathe normally - as in abdominal breathing becoming my normal breathing pattern as is healthy. Made all the difference in the world. I don't think I'm a breathy singer anymore, though I can do it by choice. But I'm fascinated by the relationship between the voice and the emotions and I have the sense that vocal training and learning how to properly use the breath can have benefits beyond improving singing and speaking.

    My problem is removing the breathy sounds in my mixed voice. It feels like I'm straining to get any sound out while in my lower chest and upper head voices I don't have this issue. I'm concerned I'm stressing my vocal chords by repetitively trying to produce sound in that midlevel with no progress. I am at a loss on how to fix this.

    Thanks for your video. Although I have to say, Ariana Grande, Mariah Carey and some of my other fave singers sing with aspirate release. I think it sounds rather beautiful... and actually doesn't damage the vocal folds :)

    • @Victoria-Victorious
      @Victoria-Victorious  3 года назад +11

      Of course! I discuss breathy singing as a stylistic CHOICE in the video, but not as one's default. This means not singing breathy 100% of the time, which IS drying to the vocal folds and can create further problems. A lot of singers have unwanted breathiness because they have not learned ho to close the vocal folds efficiently.

    Thank you Victoria, amazing as usual. I am slowly following your beginner's playlist, but I had to jump to thid video as I've heard a lot of breathiness from the video I recorded of myself to track my progress. I think my issue is I sometimes hold back too much in order not to push my voice, and this video seems to address that well. I'll make sure to apply these exercises on my next practice session. Thanks again, I LOVE your videos!

    Hello, Victoria, I've noticed a huge improvement in my tone ever since I started paying attention to my vocal closure, but, when I'm doing even the spoken siren on EE as demonstrated beautifully in your video, I can clearly hear a 'flip' somewhere in the middle of my voice as I switch into head voice. And during that flip it is hard to keep my vocal folds closed properly, they start leaking air.
    I noticed your siren is very well connected without any flips or cracks. Am I doing this siren wrong, or is it just that other parts of my voice still lack training?
    Thank you, Victoria, in advance. You are such a light and a true sweetheart. Love your content!

      Yes, EE and OO are difficult vowels for many singers. See my video on EE:
