I’m so flat! I was convinced I was the only person that was unable to sing, having no music background (despite it being in the family) I’ve now come around to opening to learn. I’m ok(ish) on relatively low notes but shifting and high notes 😬😬😅 🙏 for your guidance!!
Hi Victoria! I just got to this video, and it's beautiful. Honestly, singing flat is my major problem when singing. At some point I thought I was tone deaf, but I know I hear note alot, which you just clarified. I will try these tips
Thank you!! I noticed that after healing from a vocal cord injury, that I was singing a bit flat and also using too much air to reach high notes. Ms. Victoria.. you helped it chick for me! . After I did my vocal warm ups.. I was able to effortless hit high notes that I hadn't been able to in a while. and with clarity. I am hoping that as I continue to keep these tips in mind I will also have better breath support and not run out of breath at the end of lines! Thank you Ms. Victoria. :D

I am a composer/musician and a music teacher, though voice is not my strongest skill. I've had health problems that involve breathing and I've found I started singing flat more often unexpectedly. With a bass voice I've always had to practice reaching, often with 5ths / larger intervals and in my upper range, just not too hard or too much. I know lack of breath support to perform my newer "power songs" (8 and 10 min each) is leaving it flat. Watching this gave me technical language in simple ways to tackle this more precisely. Thank you.
im not kidding, what you taught in this video helped me instantly. i feel much more relaxed now when singing. and im more confident as well. though i know it's far from perfect still but it's a lot of improvement already personally. thank you :)

This is really helpful! I've been singing "professionally" my adult life, mostly in rock bands and now in a duo in assisted living type places. My pitch has generally been decent, but recently on recordings, I've been flat in places. (never sharp). I do have some hearing loss from the rock and roll, but I easily hear the flatness upon listening to recordings of myself. I think the reasons you listed on this video might just be what's going on. I've usually been very heavy in my mid to low range from the rock & roll singing, so I really look forward to your other videos so my husband and I can improve our duo and our voices. Thanks for your work in posting these helpful videos!
2:44 - easy and good. Great hinting! No. 2 and 3 seem like elaborating on No.1. - Having watched the video on vowels being work of mouth - I wonder if the palate is part of the mouth? Heck, no. This video is not about vowels but growels. I do not believe you can intentionally raise the palate. Sounds like twinkling your ears to me, "into me". Reminds me of my very first do-it-yourself-hint: try to attack a note slightly higher than in tune. And drop to the right. -- Last thought: the palate is the region that separates singing from speaking. There is some gurgling parts of the lower mouth that relate to "overtones" - fountain of singing. I wonder if consonants in speech that is not singing can be modulated, at all. Not with the palate. That gurgle (Simply Red live in Isch-gl...) might be the soul of - do you really wanna - say s.th., the words can be in any "langue". Palate is imperial.
Yup, I was pushing up too much weight. What happened is I was so worried I wouldn't REACH the high notes that I would immediately overcompensate by pushing in more effort, which would make me sound flat. The moment I recorded myself easing up instead of doing the opposite as I'd made a habit of doing, I sounded much better.
Only long term solution is the real fix . Quick fix are like using a make up concealer for a blemish. Nevertheless it is a gem to know the theory of the fixes , then work on it . Thank you for another real teaching.
Wow, this is so encouraging. I have been working on this the last few months and especially the spft palate part resonates with what I sometimes felt working. But I didn't know the other two and will try them tomorrow!

I have a genuine honest question, are the singing techniques different depending on whether one is a man or a woman, or are the singing techniques universal for all, regardless of gender? I love your videos by the way.
This is a great question. The principles of technique are the same, regardless of voice type, BUT the way we apply it may be different, depending on style. This is why I try to demonstrate in different registers (high and low) and apply to different styles. About half my students are men and half women. Certainly the principles of posture, breathing, breath support, vocal fold closure, and resonance apply to all singers.
Ya know what like totally crushed my self confidence?? The first 2 weeks of the first season of American idol. And the first 2 weeks of every season after that. Because I KNOW I can, or could sing, pretty damn well usually. I had a good instrument and a good ear. BUT ALL OF THOSE POOR KIDS WHO BOMBED HIDEOUSLY THOUGHT THE SAME THING! Self perception can be a very deceiving thing. I haven’t really trusted mine since. What if I actually sound like THAT?! I would die. Now I’m even shy singing in the shower. I really think if I had chosen to do something with my talent instead of choosing early motherhood, I could have actually gotten somewhere with it. Or maybe I just can’t hear and don’t know it. Lol.
I notified the soft palate thing bc I habitually keep my tongue on the bottom of my mouth throughout the day which is why I can’t breathe when I’m sick. So I need to start dropping my mouth way more.
Love your channel, Victoria! Question: How do you correct the one note that is the "transition" from chest to head? It's not a flip exactly, but more of a "fog horn" sound, as I never know whether to keep it into chest or place it in head voice. I think this touches on what you said about thinning out the vocal cords as notes get higher, but for me, it is always just that one wobbly note! Thanks in advance!
See my Playlist on the Vocal Bridge or Passaggio. I have lot of videos on it. Also, work on your Mixed Voice so that you learn how to blend. I have a playlist on Mixed Voice too.
Hello I'm back! Thanks for answering all my questions and thank you for all the videos. I have another question that's not related to this video, or maybe it is i don't know. Sometimes I'll be singing and thinking that I'm doing everything correctly, getting a good breath, supporting, etc. But for some reason my voice just cracks. It mostly happens in my lower/mid register. My teacher says that I'm not supporting correctly but I feel like I'm doing exactly the same thing as I did when I sang the exercise perfectly. I think it's something with my throat but I'm not sure. Would you happen to know what's going on and how I could fix it? Also, do you maybe have any advice on making the first phrase of a song come out correctly? I always find myself screwing up the first sentence of a song and I don't know if it's a confidence thing or what. Do you know what I'm talking about? Thanks again for the advice and the videos!
Without hearing you, I cannot say what is causing the cracking, but clearly, something is disturbing the balance in phonation. Regarding the first phrase of a song, that sounds like it is a confidence issue if you improve as you sing. Practice the opening phrases over and over again as exercises, then in performance mode. I will have a future video on how to practice songs correctly. I also have an offer of a video review of your singing on my website, www.healthyvocaltechnique.com/ !
Thank you for your tips! I think my Problem ist the second one, but I don't understand how to fix it...^^ When I sing low notes I hit the pitch, however as far as I go up, i become flat. What excactly do you mean by slightly lighter body? How do I thin my vocal folds?
Ah! Thinning out the vocal folds as you go up in pitch is one of the principles of vocal technique! :-) It sounds like you have not learned how to mix, specifically chest mix. I have several videos on this. How to find mixed voice explains it easily and clearly through spoken exercises that make it simple. ruclips.net/video/4WLfBSTYrW4/видео.html This is Part 1. Then watch Part 2 to apply to singing ruclips.net/video/3wfGp1d4U2Y/видео.html. Once you are comfortable with the first 2 videos, you can go on to: Still Confused About Chest Mix vs Head Mix?" ruclips.net/video/R8IRVpfgfr4/видео.html. This should help!
Thanks. You're great!. I've been told that I've have significant hearing loss in my lower register. From about 250 hz to 1000 hz, I have been told by 2 audiologists that I have moderate hearing loss so I can't tell that I am singing flat until I record myself. Is there any hope for me or do I have to wear hearing aides? I've tried the but sound is just amplified and I don't know if that is going to solve the problem of singing live. I've been singing for over 40 yrs. Thanks again for your insight.
I sound ok on the lower notes but I have real problems hitting the higher ones. Not sure if I can apply what you said to this problem. I'm not tone deaf ! I know when I sound awful and when I sound good. If only I could get those higher notes ! Open my mouth as if I was about to yawn and see if that might help. Thanks for your advice. Will keep trying !

Thanks for that! I find myself often going a little sharp or flat by a couple cents in the note, and so it just sounds bad. I didn't realize the palate had a part to play. Unfortunately, I have mild TMJ and can't open my mouth very tall. Can that play a part in it too?
Hey Victoria, this concept feels tricky to me What exactly is flat singing? Just squeezing our voice to reach high notes instead of reaching it gradually?
Exercises are what build and train the voice. Here is my video with my exercise formula: Daily Vocal Exercises - DON'T DO RANDOM EXERCISES! Have a FORMULA ! ruclips.net/video/3UL3aQpTh_U/видео.html. I will also have hundreds of exercise combinations in my upcoming audio exercise program.
Thanks for the video Victoria, you are really an amazing teacher. I seem to have the same problem if you could help. I am a musician with good ears but when I hear myself in recording I am constant microtonal flat. Now I have to imagine to sing on little sharp while singing to match the pitch but this is uncomfortable. I m not lack of energy, not pushing too much weight and not sure about dropped soft plate. and I did not notice if I sing on high pitch, it always match but on lower pitch it is flat and I can't help it,, This is really frustrating, how can i fix it. I need help.
Hi, SOK, "Sharping the tone" is a bandaid kind of quick fix and can cause more problems; however, it is okay if you are only talking about 1 or 2 notes and you have a show today. I recommend the longer-term solution. If your high notes are in tune and your low notes are flat, I suspect it is your dropped soft palate as you descend. Practice singing through a straw and record yourself. See if that helps! If your soft palate is weak, this can also help strengthen it!
Love your videos! How do we help someone who can’t tell when they’re off-pitch. I’ve heard there’s no such thing as being tone-deaf. Yet I know a 15 year old girl who is sometimes as much as a half-step sharp or flat, but can’t hear it.
Hi I used a vocal pitch monitoring software and realized that when I am ascending a note I am slightly flat but the same note on descent immediately after singing a higher note turns to be in tune. Any thoughts on how this immediate change happens ?
This is very common in singers who push up excess vocal weight and don't allow a tall enough throat space as they ascend in pitch. You always want to feel that you are approaching the note from above and not from below. You pretty much answered your own question when you said that you are in tune when you approach the note from above. :) You might try descending and ascending through the same intervals over and over again and record yourself.
I always sing flat when I do not sleep the night before a performance. This happens all the time, because I am often a bit stressed the night before, and I have to sing the next MORNING. In your experience, is there any way to get rid of this flat sound that is caused by lack of sleep? Caffeine doesn't seem to help, and keep in mind, sometimes I am not able to cancel, even if I don't sleep, because it's for Church and they don't have any backups. I don't know what to do. Do you sound flat when you sing on no sleep? Or is this just a beginner thing that will improve?
Sorry, but that does not happen to me. I recommend working on getting better sleep (like maybe you get too excited and need to calm down earlier in the evening), and also working on how to sing even when you are not feeling 100% (but I don't mean sick). We often have to do that.
I sing flat due to stage fright which is another kind of stress. I find if I work on deep support then adverse circumstances have less of an effect. It's not a quick fix though.
I laughed so hard when you said, However...followed by, “Do you sing habitually flat.

@@Victoria-Victorious Thank you, I will try it :)

🙏🙏🙏thank you
Thanks for that! I find myself often going a little sharp or flat by a couple cents in the note, and so it just sounds bad. I didn't realize the palate had a part to play. Unfortunately, I have mild TMJ and can't open my mouth very tall. Can that play a part in it too?
Hey Victoria, this concept feels tricky to me
What exactly is flat singing?
Just squeezing our voice to reach high notes instead of reaching it gradually?
So good! I started to practice singing some scales I found online. Could that help me with my singing if I stick to it? If so, in what way?

Hi, SOK,
"Sharping the tone" is a bandaid kind of quick fix and can cause more problems; however, it is okay if you are only talking about 1 or 2 notes and you have a show today.
Victoria can u tell me how to correct singing with high notes
I have tons of videos on this in my playlist on High Notes.

@@Victoria-Victorious Thank you! I think that working on my breath support will really help me to not sound flat.
I sing flat due to stage fright which is another kind of stress. I find if I work on deep support then adverse circumstances have less of an effect. It's not a quick fix though.
I will try to open my soft palet but what is my soft palet
