Tysm...I'm so looking forward to more of your videos....n m so glad i stumbled across this one❤️❤️❤️
Great question Hans, it's because you're focusing on the technique and the control. We need to train this into our bodies with practice so that once it becomes habitual we can let go, trust our voice and express the emotion when performing. I might have to do a video on this! Thanks for the suggestion. :)
It could be that you're moving your mouth more than you need to when you change to different words and vowels Bhavya. Hard for me to say without hearing you though.
I’ve noticed that it’s a small thing. If you focus on singing from “the back of your throat” you will naturally sound more flowingly sing-songy instead, that’s where you’re supposed to sing through when it’s coming out of your throat, if that makes sense. However, this will make it more challenging to exercise perfect control.
I just watched this video and I decided to try this and record myself singing and oh my gosh I could really hear a difference granted I do need to work on my notes but it definitely made a difference thank you so much 😁
Hi Kim, thank you for posting this video. I've been searching for a long time for a solution to my monotone drone vocal and you've just hit the spot for me in understanding what I have been doing wrong and what I need to do to prevent it, thank you once again.
Thank YOU! It's comments like these that keep me excited to do what I do. :) I really appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with me, thank you.
Thank you, i've browsed a lot of videos but you explained it well enough for me. People with no vocal lessons, coaching or prior experience just feel kind of lost. or well that's how i felt.
I'm so glad my explanation resonates with you and I completely understand that a lot of singing technique can feel overwhelming and full of "jargon." Find what clicks for you and please know that your technique doesn't need to be perfect for you to sing. Technique is a way we can make our voices more efficient and and different dimension and colour, but it's not a barrier to entry. :)
You're so welcome, I'm really glad it helped get you the sound you were after! A lot of people feel uncomfortable opening their mouths like that. It's often linked to identifying as being shy, a fear of being heard or an experience of being told off for being loud or speaking their mind when they were younger. Does that resonate with you at all?
I dont understand all you say, cos of my bad English, but in spite of that, I UNDESTAND, its very well explained and showed, good tips -Thank you very much !!
You r right bt what you r doing to make it sound more presentable is that you r using vibrato which I don't have and really want to learn it....please make a video on how to learn vibrato fast
Unfortunately vibrato comes once you have learned to control your breath and released tension throughout the body. There is no quick fix and why a video on vibrato by itself wouldn't help much.
How can i send you my record so you can help me with me singing... cause i am so shy to sing in front of people... i have been told that i can sing but when i listen to my record, it isn't something that i expected... i am trying to find someone who can help....
That is amazing. Did you come up with this technique. I like how you added the Shakespeare part because that really makes a difference when you train yourself to sing that way
Thank you, I'm so glad it helped you! I don't know that I'm the one who "invented it" but it did fall out of me trying to figure out the easiest way to have students mimic what I was doing inside my mouth to the vowels. When I simplified it to to speaking, it reminded me of Shakespearian productions I'd seen! :)
Ive been singing for awhile and i cant seem to get a better sound. My singing is on pitch but its like lazy sounding. Idk what im doing wrong. Ive followed tips all over youtube but cant seem to get it.
I'm sorry you're frustrated, I get it! If you listen to the way the singers you like pronounce their words (especially their vowels) are they different from yours? I find that sometimes imitation can be a useful tool to understand the way we shape our mouths for singing.
I struggle with my own music… I can sing like many artists on radio with range but when it comes to having range with my own music I can’t figure out how to produce it and make it flow better lol
Hmm that's so interesting Taliah. It could be that you haven't quite chosen how it's meant to sound. We have a lot of options with volume, power, brightness, warmth, rounder sounds etc so you might find it easier to follow what another artist does instead of choosing for yourself? It will help so much if you know what sound you would like to create. Maybe feel into the emotion of the song and let that guide you? Feel free to reach out if I can be of any more help! That might be helping you release the jaw more naturally Denis, just be aware that it'll change the resonance and projection a lot if you're not in alignment.
this technique of yours helped me to open up my voice and those hands behind the ears is a crazy thought but its a great idea to be able to hear own voice
This was a great video thank you ! I think this helped me to sound better but I keep finding every time I sing I get worse (a less smooth/ shaker sound and can hit less notes ) and struggle more . Much thanks xxxxx
Hi Rosie, if you're finding that your sound is shaky I'd definitely work with some vocal function exercises. You can check out the straw here: inspiredtosing.com/videos/how-to-get-rid-of-vocal-throat-strain-tension-straw-singing or fricatives here: inspiredtosing.com/videos/what-should-vocal-breath-support-feel-like
Oh Mary-Anne I hope nobody would kick you out! We can learn so much about changing the colour/tone of our sound if that's something that you'd like to do. Don't give up hope! :)
It really is Mr Chas! It's exciting when you begin to realise how much influence you can have over the tone. That's when you can really get creative! 🙂
in my head I sound like myles kennedy, a very full sound with lots of distortion when it's required but can clean up beautifully, when i record myself, it is clear that I do not sound like that, it sounds like I'm trying to sing when someone's sleeping next to me, it sounds like i'm very quiet, but I know I have a very loud voice, I've sung before at gigs whilst drumming with no mic and can be heard at the back of the venue. The distortion is also different, it's definitely there when i record myself, but it sounds like vocal when you wake up in the morning and ur voice is very deep and croaky (men anyway) also my voice is very shaky when holding one note, but when moving the pitch around it stays strong
Hi James, have you explored the idea of "support" before and how it changes depending on the volume/power you want? That could be a great place to start. I did a video that could be a good check in here: ruclips.net/video/xqC_FFc1nj8/видео.html
Hi Polar Apple, this is a really common issue for people who feel shy or uncomfortable projecting. I find that training using the straw can be a useful way to feel more at ease with using your breath as fuel to project (without it being loud or judging your voice). My video on this can be found here: inspiredtosing.com/videos/how-to-get-rid-of-vocal-throat-strain-tension-straw-singing
I think my vocal cords were just built incorrectly. I'm 18 and my voice switches between being audible and just hissing air out. Can I even fix it? dude i think ima cry
Leave a comment if you have questions. Yes, I have a few! Why don't you sound monotoned, flat, or like talking to me when you tried to mimic the problem you're trying to help us fix? Do we actually have a different problem? Because when i "attempt" to sing I am 100% just talking and I don't know how to fix that and none of the "tricks" on youtube have helped change that at all. I just talk louder? there's like zero rhythm. Haaallllpp? :D
Hi Blake, thanks for your question. As you can probably tell, singing is a layered learning experience so it's tricky to nail everyone's challenge in one video, but let's get to work figured out yours. :) When you say rhythm, is it timing that you struggle with or are you wanting more flow or warmth/fullness to your voice to sound more like "singing"?
Thanks, I've always had problems with opening my mouth more when I speak in English (not my mother tongue) that’s why I stick to songs that I can sing with a deeper pitch because when I go up an octave I feel like that’s not my actual voice and it sounds like a girl voice instead or sum that does not sound like it fits the song but with this I can try and sing some other stuff and playing more with my voice :)
Hello, thanks for taking the time to comment! You're certainly not alone in not knowing how to navigate some of those higher notes (and feeling like it's not your real voice). We don't tend to speak in higher pitches in our day to day life so it's something we begin to learn and become familiar with. Sometimes being a little silly and speaking like a cartoon character can help us find a hybrid between our normal speaking voice and something sweeter and more "sing-y".
Hmm, that's tricky to answer without hearing what you mean by "have their own wall" but it could be that you're giving each note a "puff" of air. I get singers to explore melodies with lip trills, tongue rolls or through a straw to feel what it's like to have a continuous stream of air while they change notes (not separating them). I hope that's helpful!
Haha, yes we don't base our singing on how our face looks which can mean we end up with some interesting expressions (but if you come back to the feeling of it, the emotion you're expressing and the experience of creating sound, you stop worrying so much about the faces you pull).
Oh my goodness, I came here because I had problems just a few minutes ago with that exact same Beyonce song that you just demonstrated. Scared me to death, but thank you, because now I can copy your articulation and directly apply it xD

My pleasure, thanks for watching!
Oh wow thanks so much
My absolute pleasure, thanks for watching Lucas! :)
Can you help me figure out why it feels like all of my tones have there own wall and won’t allow for a smooth transfer?
Hmm, that's tricky to answer without hearing what you mean by "have their own wall" but it could be that you're giving each note a "puff" of air. I get singers to explore melodies with lip trills, tongue rolls or through a straw to feel what it's like to have a continuous stream of air while they change notes (not separating them). I hope that's helpful!
thank you this helped me out a lot
Awesome, thanks for taking the time to comment! :)
Nice tips. But as i look in the mirror i look like a baby bird waiting for worms 😳
Haha, yes we don't base our singing on how our face looks which can mean we end up with some interesting expressions (but if you come back to the feeling of it, the emotion you're expressing and the experience of creating sound, you stop worrying so much about the faces you pull).
@@thatsweetroar so true!
I kinda know what your saying but at the same time I don't but thank you anyway you were very helpful
Oh my goodness, I came here because I had problems just a few minutes ago with that exact same Beyonce song that you just demonstrated. Scared me to death, but thank you, because now I can copy your articulation and directly apply it xD
That is awesome Alex, I hope it's feeling a lot better. Thanks so much for watching and sharing how it helped you. :)
Amazing ! 🥰
