Thick fluffy sliced potato surrounded by a crunchy beer batter…these are so delicious! Perfect to eat on their own but often accompanied by battered fish or as I’m doing, in a white buttered roll with brown sauce! :)
Everything I used will be mentioned below incase you want to make these for yourself. Thanks for stopping by,

Recipe starts @2:00 after my rambling! :D x
What's the star symbol ALL about?
Is that a HIM logo? Love your channel!
What's For Tea? Ramble all you like; I love listening to you!
lmao I used to ramble! I have upgraded to wittering senselessly! but I'm an old fart loved the video x
I don't mind a bit of Scottish rambling.
My Dad made these every week in ‘60’s for us. He called them ‘snacks’ then. Love them I always remember my Dad when I eat them.
Thank you. I made these for my wife years ago. Totally fell in love with them and me. Time to light a spark. Cheers
Potatoes are among my favourite foods. Even a simple jacket potato with butter brings a smile. But the fish shop chips of my childhood, wrapped in newsprint, with malt vinegar, were just heaven. These look definitely worth making.
Tried this recipe tonight. Best one. My hubby said they were even better than the chippy. High praise indeed, lol
Thank you for these videos, My great nan passed before I got her recipes. She never wrote them down. I may live stateside, but I grew up eating scottish food and this is giving me a chance to rebuild what she taught me.
Cheryl when I was a kid in Liverpool they sold these in the chippys.......they were called scallops then, and still are! (nothing to do with the seafood scallop) And yeah, they are great with brown sauce!
yeah I believe they are called scallops down there :) My Dad is a Yorkshire man and calls them scallops x
gary chapman yes! We used to have scallops and chips here in Yorkshire- technically chips with a big chip 😂😂
They’re called potato scallops in some states of Australia too. 😊
@@clairemcleod8676 In Victoria, they're called potato cakes. Whatever the name, they're yummy if done right 😋
We called them potato "smacks"!
I could sit here and listen to you speak, for hours lol I visited Scotland in 2015 - my first trip across the pond! My cousin and I were on a bus tour that went from Edinburgh all the way around and ended in Glasgow. It was the loveliest time I've ever had. I'd go back tomorrow, if I could. Your homeland is so beautiful. I hope I'll get to go back some day! I'm definitely going to try these - they look delicious!
We are a US transplanted family from Greenock and my mom made these as a treat. But she called them “snacks”. She used self rising flour and just water, no beer. But they were soooo good and we LOVED when she made these. Thank you for the wonderful memories 🥰. I might have to give them a go again. 😋. Love your channel! ❤️
Add one tablespoon of olive oil and make sure the water is sparkling water makes the fluffy and light xo
Came here for the recipe and noted you were from Greenock, My family are all from Greenock and 3 of us still stay here. We were originally from Grieve Road and went to Lady Alice School I live on Inverkip Road close to the School
Used to make these all the time, putting on paper towels to drain and son would be eating them faster than I could make them ! Made corned beef fritters too! Really good!
Ooh I LOVE corned beef fritters Margaret! Not had them for years :)
Is that just a corned beef slice in the same batter?
Margaret deVries oh Cornbeef fritters brings back so many childhood memories. My Mam used to make them n they were lovely. I had completely forgotten about them thanks for the reminder Margaret 😁
@Margaret deVries
Do you happen to have that corned beef fritter recipe handy?
I'd love to give them a try!
Thank you!
What's For Tea?. Me too. And Corned Beef Hash.
Hello There. We used to get these from our local chip shop, when we were kids, they were lovely. No one sells them now. I've made these before but I put them straight into the batter without any cooking. They were OK. I'll try these your way tonight. Thanks a lot for posting. Stay safe you and yours. Singem.
I'm from Australia, and we call them potato cakes. Yum! Love them.
Sue Whitty ..... make potato rissoles ... used mashed potato, plain no butter or milk , mash really well ! Chill in fridge then form into logs and roll in fish dressing think it was paxo ? Orange color .....bake in a 350 oven until golden and firm ! Made some for grandkids recently they loved them ! Used left over mashed potatoes , ( it did have butter ). Turned out fine !
Make salmon cakes mixing in salmon to potato but no butter ! Form into patties , chill , dip in fish dressing or fine breadcrumbs and bake on parchment paper. ...350.
In WA we call them potato scallops. Or at least we used to.
Scallops love em
We call them potato scallops in Queensland Australia. Yummy with brown vinegar!.
Not sure what part of Australia you're from but in Sydney they are known as Scallops as well
Your wee channel is awesome
Miss tea lady. I'm making these tomorrow for breakfast.
I remember gettin them at the
Chippie in glasgow with brown sauce on roll. Thank you so much.😊❤
A spud fritter sammie, yuuum. Feeling hungry now. Potato fritters are a long established favourite here in New Zealand.
In the USA so I’ve never had these.
I HAVE to make these! This is like a hubby’s dream come true ❤️❤️❤️thank you
Tried the recipe for the "Tattie Fritters", used fizzy water for the batter and deep fried them in Beef dripping (we're from Yorkshire). What an absolute treat, followed the recipe as on the video with my method of frying but that's a personal choice. They were fantastic, crispy on the outside, the batter was perfect and so soft on the inside. A big thanks for the RUclips video, everyone should try it, you won't be disappointed. I will try the batter with a good beer next time, just to see if they can be even better, although I doubt it. Very well done!! We love 'em.
Who's here in 2024? 😂
As with ALL your recipes Cheryl these look bloody delish!! Making these for dinner tonight 😋
Oh my goodness! I love that combination soft roll, butter , and potato 🥔❤️ the ultimate in comfort 😃
Going to try this today for my family ❤️🤞
I actually made these 3 days ago here in Germany, they were delish. Only thing is I made up the recipe, and I'm watching this now and I got it right. They're beautiful.
Came across your video channel and my god my husband thinks I'm the best cook ever. Thanks to you. Your cooking is amazing 😂
Aaahhh my Scottish mother in law used to make these, never seen a recipebefore, will be cooking these today. She used to serve them with bacon & egg for breakfasts
You deserve any promoting they give you, I don’t always find you, so it’s nice to make it easier too!
I've not tried that fritter before. Look great. Thank you.
Just made some for tea. I'd never heard of these before but they will regularly be on my menu from now on. Absolutely beautiful!
Fritters"n"roll are yummy-licious!😊
Just like we add a packet of crisps to oor wee rolls!
Simple scrumptious 😉
In Australia they are called potato cakes, but can't get 'em here in the USA., so my mouth was drooling....! Thank you for sharing, love your video's!
My dad used to make these all the time "delicious" he was from Glasgow, Thank you.
My Welsh mother made these regularly as a treat for my Scottish father and the rest of us. Always welcome, especially when camping in the woods - as an evening snack by the campfire.
Thank you for reminding me how good they are.
Wow, thank you for this video! It’s brought back memories of my nana making these for me when I was younger. My Nana inspired me to cook and I am now chef in the West Midlands having moved from Glasgow in 2011. You’ve really cheered me up with this video thank you, keep safe 😀😀
American who first had these potato fritters in South Australia from the fish 'n chip shop. LOVE them. Am back in the US, my Aussie husband (but his Gran was a Scot) has passed away and I was just wishing the other day I knew how to make these! Thank you so, so much!
Awwwwww just taken me back to my Grans when I used to go for tea.....32 years ago was my last time...I’ll be trying this xx thank you xx
It's like Scottish potato tempura. I tried your recipe. Completely fab. Than you!
In northern ireland we call them scallops too. They're very filling when funds are low.
And in south west uk
Strange! I went to a chipper in Kilkenny once and asked for some scallops and she looked at me like I’d ten heads! I then assumed scallops were something only in Waterford! 🤣 good to know it was her that was the weirdo haha
In Australia we call them potato cakes haha
I'm from Manchester originally - same here Patsy! So I had to look around for the right recipe on RUclips. This looks good. Now outside the UK without chippie access - so making them at home tonight!
I only know scallops as in fish...we call them fritters here in Scotland.👌
"a wee while" oh I love it! Aloha from Hawaii! I love potatooooos and anything fried!!!! I made your easy steak pie for New Years and it was so delicious with homemade crust!!!!! My DNA is from China but my heart and appetite is all Scottish!
I am of Mexican descent and my Gran made these with a different batter. Hers had beaten egg whites then add the yolk and fold in. Add salt and deep fry. The potatoes were similar to chile relleno. They were so delicious! Thank you for your recipes!
Oh, yes, the always unavoidable chile relleno. Had one with my dinner this evening, in fact. With chihuahua cheese oozing out......yummmylicious!
Hiya was just thinking about this recipe yesterday lol 2 years now ! Blessings luv Ontario Canada Thankyou 🇨🇦🐝
ITS A SIMPLE RECEPY BUT THE WAY YOU DESCRIBE EVERYTHING IS FIRST CLASS KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK CHEERS
My late Mum loved fritters and your lovely video made me think of her, thank you.
I live in Germany now and always thought there was more to making them. So glad there's no. Thanks ☺️
I’m almost faint with hunger after watching that video!! Yum!
Here in Liverpool the chippy’s call them scollops, I love them , yours look particularly gorgeous 😍😍😍thank you
We used to have these in my uncle's chippy we called them scallops. Thinly cut potato cooked in batter, yummy yum yum.
Just subscribed to your channel. I am so enjoying your recipes . I live in the southern US and I have Scottish heritage . Been wanting to learn true Scottish recipes .God bless !
My wife loves potato scallops (Australia) 60 years ago in the UK she used to buy from the chippie a bag of batter scraps for a couple of pennies, best thing ever with salt and vinegar on them.
I'm from the US. Could you explain just what a chippie or chippy is? And are any still in business today?
@@jovanalmen8660 Fish and Chip shop. English and more so Australians like to shorten things down.
Once upon a time the scraps, burnt, overcooked bits and pieces would be sold off to kids or on occasion depending upon the owner/workers given to kids who looked like they could do with something to eat. Nanny state diplomacy now stops such practices.
Depending upon which state you live in the name varies.Once upon a time they were strictly sliced potato ,battered. Now the big commercial factories sell reconstituted mash potato pressed into scollop shape but as most people prefer the proper potato slices Fish and Chip shops will make their own or buy the now available commercial sliced ones.Years ago there were only scollops but with the introduction of a crustacean called 'a scollop' you have to ask for 'potato scollops' and ask if they have 'proper' or mash 'look a like'.
@@Aussieuke Thanks.
@Victor Murat You are right about the scollop being a mollusc. I made the usual mistake in crossing my vision memory with spanner crabs for some reason,I think from some very young mistake many years ago.Same outcome if you did not specify 'potato'. Seafood instead of potato battered.
My grandmother (from Glasgow) was the star fritter maker in the wider family! We loved when she came to stay for holidays and make us this yummy treat xx
I love potato fritters I use to have them from my local chippy when I was young 😃 thanks for bringing back the memory's 🥰🏴
I have always called them battered scollops and that was the same in Birmingham chippys and Waterford Ireland. never used olive oil in beer batter I will have to try that recipe sometimes put turmeric in for colour but only a very small amount so taste is not affected. Posh chip butty getting munchies now with all this talk of food!!
Cheryl, I’ve just found your channel and this one had me near to tears 😢.
My late mum, who was a cook in the WRNS and later worked in the restaurant/canteens in some of the Glasgow colleges, used to make her own tatie fritters. She made some wonderful food, never consulting a recipe book, and I so miss her.
She never shared her recipes though, just saying ‘I just throw things together’. She wouldn’t have used beer in the recipe, but I’m going to try this one as per your ingredients to see if I can get anywhere near to her recipe. Thank you for all the great food and recipes you give us ❤
Omg theses are my fav made them the other day best batter ever thanks for sharing
Oh Gosh; my mom would make these as a late night (10 o’clock at night!) snack! Thanks for the memory AND the recipe!
OMG. I started peeling the potatoes half way thru the video. It brought back old memories of my mum making these on a Saturday to go with supper.
I remember being 13 years old , my friends and I would sell our dinner tokens on a Friday then climb over the school fence to buy chips and or potato fritters from the chippy....I always got the potato fritters.
I live in Belfast we call them scallops and are still sold in the chippy of today delicious food 😋
Reminds me of my childhood in London, my Scottish dad would make fritters all the time.
Yum yum, we call them potato scallops here in Australia.
I used lemon instead of beer and it was sooo crunchy tysm for the recipe I was craving them for breakfast🥺💗
I like how there's many ways to prepare these... My dad used to slice them around 5mm thick, batter, then fry twice. First to cook the potato and batter, then at high temp to get the crunch. I haven't recreated the result, yet, But has been a tasty journey
My son made these last week, luv them! They were delicious ❤️
Wow..I've never boiled ma totties before making fritters...I'll be trying this from now on 👌👌
My Scottish Grandfather made the best potato fritters. I haven't had them for decades because I am afraid to deep fry anything haha. You make it look so easy I might have to give them a try. He also was known for his corn fritters
You could shallow fry the potatoes in a pan. 👍
Buy yourself a Fry Daddy and fry everything out on the patio with newspapers on the ground underneath. That way, your apartment doesn't smell of fried stuff, or your hair, or your clothes...OR, you could make it a community event. Get your turkey deep fryer going with the propane tank and have everyone bring all kinds of stuff to deep fry (when the current situation with Covid is over, of course).
We call them Potato Scallops here in Queensland Australia and
I always eat mine with salt and lemon juice
we call them potato cakes in Victoria, salt and vinegar, or just plain salt, yummy
@@amandagardner565 Do we have this argument in front of guests :) lolz.
@@mjonausk the year i turned 16 (1983) i visited a friend who had got married and moved with her pharmacist hubby who got a job in redcliffe.

she told me about some of the things like potato cake/scallops, but the one time i was out on my own was the day that local fish and chip shop was bloody shut, so i couldn't get any potato cakes.
.
i do remember the wanker lift operator in the brisbane town hall , who when asked for places to take a visiting victorian stated the bottom of the river.
he really wasn't working in the right job.
@@amandagardner565 You think he was joking ... where do you think the basement is in the lift well ...
I was so lucky to have a Yorkshire Gran to make me these.
I rate chip shops by the quality of their potato fritters.
WOW yum 😋
Ok.....I'm a year late seeing this video but so worth it. For starters I could listen to you speak all day long I just love your accent. You have brought back teenage memories when we would go to the local fish & chip shop and get a potato fritter roll.....it did have tomato on it but I tell you.....it was unbelievable. I am so excited to make these.
Love from an Irish girl in Australia 💚
Cheryl I just recently found your channel and I'm loving all your recipes that are bringing back so many childhood memories!! Fritters are one of my favourite dishes when I go back home to Scotland 🏴❤️ I'll definitely try this recipe!! 🤗
Well, there’s lunch today! BTW we call them Potato Scallops in Australia! Thanks very much for the recipe and the inspiration! 👍😉
They're only called Potato Scallops in certain parts of Australia, in South Australia they are called by their correct name of Potato Fritters and in some other parts of Australia they are called Potato Cakes.
@@neilfromdownunder9204 I agree. I think the" potato scallop" is a Queensland thing. I'm in Brisbane and that is what I have called then for years. Have not recently bought them as that sort of thing is strictly off my diet.
They call them scallops in parts of England . Here in Scotland they are called fritters .
Good basic home cooking. The best kind of cooking.
In NZ we now have 95% of fish and chip shops owned by immigrant Chinese.
Potato fritters are one thing they just don't know how to make. I miss the humble potato fritter. So thanks for this I will make my own.💚
In beer batter fried potato on bread... I think you broke my inner German with that. Humankind clearly has reached it's peak here
I used to be able to buy two slices of potato sandwiching minced beef and oinion in a fritter, delicious

Aah 🤗 childhood memories of getting scallops and crispy bits from the chippy with my paper round money xx. Lovely.
Love these, not had in years, filled you up when never had a lot,
When I was knee high to a grasshopper in the mid 1950's Scallops as they were known then, where sold in chippies all over Liverpool. They were covered in a beautiful formulated batter and deep fried in a very hot Lard, not like todays cheap tasteless so-called cooking oils. Shame its almost disappeared from the chippies down South of England.
Have to give them a try and make some myself but using Lard instead of Rapeseed or similar oil and maybe experiment with adding some cayenne or chilli pepper aswell to the batter. MMmmmm.
Great video by the way. Brought back super memories. 🥔😋
We just made these and they were exceptional. My husband says they are as good as the ones his dad made when he was a boy (and I've heard about for 30+ years)
Thank you
This looks good! Doctor Who to Amy Pond, “You’re Scottish...fry something!”
I used to actually know an Amy Pond; she was a year behind me in high school.
Julie Rauth Shaw My dog is named Amy Pound, the dog who waited LOL
@@CrappyBJJBlueBelt wait a minute, is your surbame Pound, or did you adopt her from the pound, or did you name her for the character?
@@julierauthshaw8556 No, I named her "Amy Pound" instead of Pond. hahah Yeah, because she was from the pound.
I remember that line. Only because I had an enormous crush on the character Amy Pond "pond".
Thanks for this recipe, I used to eat these every week from my local fish and chip shop. Unfortunately nobody makes them anymore so I will give them ago myself. Thanks again from Australia !!! 😀
thank you Mrs Doubtfire, I shall make these lovely little fritters tonight
Yum I love these and been missing having them as the local chippy has been closed with this lockdown now I can make my own lovely 😊
Thank you, ma'am. All those years, I never understood your love of spud fritters. I didn't twig the beer.
Hi Cheryl! In Australia we call them Potato Cakes!
I live in Japan and I SOOOOOOO miss fritters!!
I remember 69 - 70 , coming out of the swimming baths on cold evenings , with, the army cadets B company Beardmore , in Glasgow , a big bag of these for a shilling , almost better than a Cuddle fae my Ma , Thanks for this Great Channel ,
i used to have these when i was a wee lad, from the chippy in the 80s/90s on a soft roll with salt n vinager and grated cheese on mmmmm, they were lovely and not more than a £1 to buy including the roll n cheese! a cheap very filling snack x
I have not eaten these for about 60 yrs and yes I can agree they were always good. I have not seen these in Chip Shops were I have ever been mores the pity. Potato Fritters and Spam Fritters, comfort food. Think you are influencing my evening meal.
I’d never seen those before, but I’ll need to make some, and I loved the crunchie sound
Hi Cheryl. Thanks for a very simple recipe. I love potato scallops / potato cakes as they're known here in Australia 🇦🇺. I usually buy them from the fish n chippie uncooked as they are and then airfry them.
Now I have a decent and simple recipe I'll try them your way. Thanks.
Going to be trying these tomorrow. Another fantastic recipe!!!
That looks good also corned beef fritters and pineapple fritters are great.
Always remember me mammy doing these for us lot and on occasion span fritters, lovely. On my way home from school in the winter I would pop in and get a pineapple fritter to keep me warm waiting for the bus home. The best food is that you grew up on and there were no ready made meals back then, the closest was those god awful Vesta curry’s that came in a box.
Spam fritters 😋😋😋😋😋
In Sheffield chip shops, they have two slices of potato like this with a layer of fish in the middle dipped in batter and cooked the same and they are fab - it’s called a ‘Sheffield Fish Cake’….I love your videos by the way.
I used to get one of these for my lunch at school sometimes instead of the healthy meal my parents had given me the money for, it meant I had egnough money left to buy a single cigarette and 3 mathches from the dodgy garage down the road! 😁 Nice video, I'm gonna re-ignight some memories 👍
Thank You for this! You remind me of me Gran, she was Louisiana Cajun, but, your kitchen is SPOT ON! Thank You again, Gran passes in '98....
When I was a wee boy in the 90s you used to be able to get a fritter in a roll from the chippy for 40p.
Lovely - my favourite - thanks.
Nothing like a good crispy batter and a fried potato (fritter) on a roll is amazing! I am going to try your batter recipe it looks very good. Congratulations on making the trending page. You definitely deserve it!
My husband would die for these. Fried carbs on buttered carbs are his idea of bliss.
Loving this channel. What a wee Scottish angel you are.
Congratulations on making the trending page news! That's wonderful! Delicious recipe .. looks so so good! Thumbs up xx
In NSW we call them scallops, or potato scallops, because the slice is called a scallop. In the rest of Australia they are called potato cakes, because they get confused with scallops (the shelllfish). They are a must in a so-called Seafood Basket from a chippie with king prawns, scallops, calamari rings and small pieces of fish, all cooked in batter. Chips are not necessary, but most people have them. I LOVE THEM!!!! Even a couple with a piece of grilled quality white fish, probably because we usually get frozen chips of dubious quality in a chippie, and a proper Greek salad, fetta, olives, onion, tomato and cucumber..
They are called potato scallops in Queensland
