I am not coming over for dinner because Hellofresh exploits their workers to no end. They are a disgusting unionbusting company who treats their workers like garbage.
Actually, as a Taiwanese, many of these dumpling hacks are pretty legit, as in my grandma has taught me. The rose one though, not so sure because it seems like a lot of dough to very little filling ratio.
you might be able to get more meat in w practice; I imagine the key would be to flatten it a bit before folding the dough over so you could make sure it covers as much area as possible without adding too much girth or overflowing. no clue how to make dumplings tho so idk there could be plenty of factors I'm not taking into consideration
It is better to do with a group. My first attempt at dumpling making i was alone and ended up making dumplings for what seemed to be hours lol. I ended up with about 120 dumplings because I had no idea the recipe would be that large lol. 1 pound of pork and one of shrimp is a lot of filling lol I had to portion it in half and keep half in fridge while folding lol
god i really miss this channel. it was such a break from saf's channel's energy (in a good way!) Like if Saf's channel was like really good pasta, this was that good wine and bread pairing. even though the pasta is amazing, you still need the wine and the bread breaks. it's like, you need the pasta so that the wine and bread taste good, but you need the wine and bread so the pasta tastes good. each element enhances the other!! This channel has this gentle, kind of casual vibe I LIVE for which is such a nice contrast from the structured, more 'productiony' vibe that Saf's channel has. sometime you want a deep dive into the fake scam ads that tiktok is casually allowing to run rampant on their platform, and sometime you just want to watch your favourite duo try to follow dumpling hacks that are needlessly complicated! I hope you guys eventually return to this channel as well. Love you both loads!
totally agree, for me it's like different cuisines but similar vibes. saf's channel is a pasta dish and tyler's is noodles. i swap between the channels when my palate requires smth a little different
So for that lotus one, they definitely used a cookie cutter to get such even circles without any tapering at the edges, which isn't what you usually want for dumplings, but works for that method.
Theyre not using hot water dough, theirs is so yellow. Probably pasta dough or otherwise enhanced with eggs. And yup, dumpling dough should be rolled so that it tapers/gets thinner at the edges so that they don't become too thick or gummy when the folds/pleats are made. Those hack dumplings would not be satisfying to eat if they were made with dumpling dough and steamed like that because the dough would be too thick
@@AllTheArtsy looks like the hacks channel used whole wheat flour from the colour. I use whole wheat flour for flat breads, so the colour seems similar

Guys I appreciate you showing us not to be afraid to mess up in the kitchen. It's every novice's experience but we usually don't see it on video. From what I've seen the dumplings had more dough and not enough meat is because they're not rolled out thin enough. The way to fit more meat is use the same amount of dough but roll it out thinner, like at least 3 times thinner than what you did in the video, especially at the edges or parts of it that will be pressed together or bunched up. Don't be afraid they will tear while steaming; they really won't unless the dough is torn before it goes in the steamer. The meat won't increase in volume, in fact it will shrink when you cook it.
Lotus dumplings: it's common in many places that each hole at top has a kernel of corn or a pea in it, so you could form them around that and use the veggie to hold the hole open.
Loved Tyler nailing a very concise, to the point commentary for the shell dumplings and instantly losing me with random ESPN analogy 😂 I wouldn’t want it any other way 🙏
Love the chaotic energy of these videos. They have the fun vibe of Safiya and Tyler’s livestreams and the tight editing kicks it up a notch! 🩷❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜🖤🤍🤎
A hack they didn't show you: roll out a larrrrrge rectangle of dough, then use a round either cookie cutter or biscuit cutter to get the perfect round shape. You can re-roll the scraps, too!
We do this for perogies too, I can't imagine trying to hand roll dozens of equal sized circles. Old school farm style: just a glass instead of a cookie cutter.
The dough in the hacks video is definitely not dumpling dough (hot water dough with just flour and water), it looks so yellow. It probably is pasta dough, enriched with egg, which makes it bind better and hold its shape
Tyler's "Come dough, time to meet your destiny" is definitely something I shall from now on say to my dough when baking. 😂❤ Also, Safiya's musical commentary this episode is just _chef's kiss_ ! 💫
Saf & Tyler should open a business that sells frankencandles, frankenlipstick, dumplings, chocolate bars and any other franken product they plan to create. I love these type of videos. You 2 did amazing!

Hey now, some of the flower shapes turned out quite lovely! I think the visual process of making the shell dumplings is quite nice, but the end result (even from the hack video haha) just look a bit like wrinkly shar pei puppies lol
26:30 Saf momentarily staring into the center of the universe to contemplate what Tyler could have possibly meant by "the hacker did not become the hackee" 💀
These looked pretty hecking tasty! They were definitely using clay or a completely different kind of dough for the initial aesthetics and then possible real dumplings once they were cooked because any amount of gluten in dough will not let it just sit there neatly, so kudos for achieving these beautiful shapes! Definitely needed more meat in them, but you nailed each hack!
I usually dont comment so much on RUclips videos, and I love your content so much. Just to inform I watched a video a while ago about Hello Fresh unethical work practice. Anyway everything okey, and you are both my favorite content creators I re-watched your videos so much, love you all. And wish you the best ^^ ❤
Part of the issue is your dough is not all the same size. They rolled theirs out to a constant thickness and then cut it with a cutter of some sort. Also, keep the dough cool until use would prob help as well. (They prob used part rice flour and part AP wheat flour, but not 100% sure.)
One thing that ive noticed from other handmade dumpling videos is using a smaller rolling pin, almost like a thick dowel, thats used with one hand. The ball of dough is smushed a bit, then the edges are rolled thin while the center has a slight hump of dough. Theres a reason why i use pre-made wrappers.
Here's an actual hack for making this easier: get a big portion of the dough, roll it all at once on your surface (sprinkled with flour of course) paying attention to make it as even as you can, just like when you're making cookies. Then get a whisky glass (any glass really, but relatively big circumference), turn it upside down and use it to cut out circles. Immediately knead the dough cutouts back together and put them under a damp cloth with the rest of your dough so that it doesn't get dry. Meanwhile, you can work with your perfect circles of very similar thickness. Because they're all the same, you'll quickly figure out how much filling to use to make it easy to fold but still satisfying, and they'll all require the same cooking time. And if you have a partner at the ready, you use them to roll and cut, while you fill and fold. Or the other way around, depending on the force vs. art distribution in your household. Pre-cutting the dough into portions, like you did in the video, will only be efficient if you can ditch the rolling pin and flatten it with your fingers. I tend to do that when making bigger steamed buns (the dough can be thicker, and I go for thinner edges to keep balance when they're all joined on top). Happy dumpling making!
A LOTUS! 😂 OMG that was hilarious. As I have never made any dumplings by hand either, I'm sure my first attempt would not be any better, but that was just great!
I loved you actually tried the hack out. I saw the video a while back and couldn't figure out how to do any of it with my dumplings, so I went with the usual smash the edges together and hope the seam stays that way while cooking. I might try it again this week. I was wondering what the hack was using for their dough; your idea that it is playdough makes so much sense! It holds its shape and looks good and you can put more meat in it. Too bad it isn't edible.
I'm a big fan of your videos, but i must say, when you were doing the lotus hack, in my head i was screaming because you missed one essential step of the hack, always pinching the dough first in the middle! 😂 ❤ like "noooo, pinch it! xD"
Those were really cute. I think they would have worked better if you'd refrigerated the dough and the meat before attempting to form the dumplings and used a finger tip of water to seal them. But for first-timers and people who don't cook that often, they looked really cute! I may even have to try these!
For the cabbage one, insteadof mixing dough with water use like spinach juice or something green. My brother actually dough of all colors with fruit/veggie juice, my favoriteone was watermelon juice! And we had carrot, purple cabbage, added lemon juice to purple cabbage to make it blue, it's really fun!
They all came out very pretty. I'm kind of sad it was mostly dough, but I feel like you guys probably made an insane amount of traditional dumplings with all that filling you had leftover. At least, that's what I would've done.
Good job guys! Love your channel. I did notice your dough was too dry. That's why the dough didn't stick together when you pinched it. But brava to Safiya. You were the rockstar in this video. 😂 However, with the right dough, Tyler would have kicked butt. 😊

I do beleive ya'll did an awesome job. I also know they are using pre-made dumpling wraps - so they are all the exact size needed, the thickness is just so = big advantage!
So when mixing the filling for dumplings, use chop sticks or even better a butter knife and stir in on direction. It make a better and more melded filling. The proteins of the meat form better
