Trying Clickbait Clothing "Hacks" From Instagram

  • So I've been seeing these clothing and fashion hack videos all over Instagram, and they always seem so incredibly strange that I decided to test a bunch of them out and see how they were! We tried a few out from different instagram accounts and pages and ended up with a boxer bralette, a laminated shirt, a skirt weighed down with coins, a bra strap necklace, and napkin shoes!
    Don't forget to cast your tattoo vote at the end of the video before Tuesday afternoon!
    BTW, if you don't see the "i" icon in the corner to vote on the tattoo, try hovering or clicking on the screen to see it in the corner!
    Don’t forget to click the bell to turn on post notifications!

      I think there might be something out there that you can sew into the hems to do the job and is made just for that. I'm a bit into sewing and such so ik there's so many things out there that are hardly known or found in fast fashion items and some are really cool and should be there in your everyday clothes but idk for sure if there's something that's specified for this issue as I personally never had it since I usually make/wear maxi skirts made from thick fabric (my preference for comfort) so both the length and the fabric make the skirt heavy enough on its own

It looks like Saf had the right idea about putting the paper in pieces first, and you should apply a layer of Modpodge under the paper, then smooth any wrinkles out before doing the top coat. I also think tissue or napkin might be too lightweight to get a good result.

Bonus: For best weight per dollar, consider using dimes, cents or pebbles. For maximum value use expensive jewelry.

    I think a lot of these hacks are meant to be upcycle. Like instead of throwing away your old bra you can turn it into something else. You should check out a RUclips channel called Coolirpa. She does videos where she thrift for very dodgy clothing and then turn them into very nice clothes. Maybe you can try to follow one as well for a video.

    • @WeiYinChan
      @WeiYinChan 6 лет назад +2

      exaggeratedeyeroll also, I'd add that decoupage technique is to apply glue, than tissue, than glue again, so tissue would stick properly. And need to pull it gently while applying to avoid wrinkles as much as possible. Yeah, this DIY is not easy

  • @kittyprydex
    @kittyprydex 4 года назад +34

    If you're doing that to shoes, you have to use a thicker paper, like comic book pages or stronger. A thin layer to glue the paper to the shoe, then a little bit thicker layer on the top. Let it dry and cure, about a day, and it's ready when it's not tacky to the touch. Then you have to layer it again and let dry 24-48 hours again. If you're not too impatient, do it a third time. But 2 layers minimum.

    As someone who has an absurd amount of experience with bizarre crafty skills (I may be the proud owner of a loveseat with no right angles, built from scratch...), I have two big tips for the shoes thing and one for the iron on.
    Iron on first, as it’s the quickest- they make printable iron on sheets. Just follow the directions. The only caveat is to be sure that if you want to use a dark shirt, buy the sheets made specifically for dark shirts. Also, they don’t last super long but they do just fine for the occasion fun odd project.
    Shoes next. One, I suspect someone with sewing knowledge and/or piecing knowledge might have better luck using cheap, thin cloth napkins. And two, make sure to wait at least one day, preferably several days, between the glue and the spray varnish. The glue needs a chance to fully cure or everything will fall apart after only a few uses. Dry does not equal cure, either. I think the name brand mod podge has a cure time of 3 days, not positive and it’s in the basement so I’ll just say to look it up. And three, a random bonus tip, I’d recommend several light coats of varnish, separated by however long the package recommends. An overly thick coat won’t set right, and t can cause transparency issues (letting you see the old shoe through the napkin rather clearly) and discoloration.

    You need to put a layer of glue on the shoes first. And also watering down the glue a bit so it absorbs into the tissue more. This is an excellent hack so please try it again! You are right to work in small sections, even cutting the tissue into smaller usable pieces

    Interestingly, the whole sewing coins inside skirt hems thing is actually an old seamstress trick from way back when, to get them to hang straight.

    • @aim-to-misbehave5674
      @aim-to-misbehave5674 6 лет назад

      Not just way back when! Queen Elizabeth's dressmakers sew weights into her skirts and coat hems for all her official visits so the paparazzi don't get any weird photos of her clothes blowing around (even though her skirts are long enough that nothing would show).

    Soooo. As a crafter just a couple of suggestions. 1) on little objects put glue on the destination, rather than the item, you’re less likely to burn yourself that way. Also 2) also I recommend adding mod-podging the shoe first then adding the napkin and then doing a second layer on top of the napkin.

    as someone who does mod podge a lot. the downfall was the pattern of napkin, as well as technique. first, you need a pattern that if full of color. like in the video. if not it becomes "clear" and you see the shoe, and any imperfections. as for technique, you MUST apply a layer of mod podge to the shoe, then place the napKin in sections while still wet. then apply more mod podge over top. it must be applied to every inch of shoe you want the napKin to be or it will not tare well. also tare when dry.

      I think they thin the modge podge with some water too. That really helps thin out the napkin and get it into the crevices. Take it from me, I'm an avid decoupager lol

      I don't think you're aware, but your phone or mic is replacing "tear" (the present tense for taking apart something) for "tare" (a type of plant).

    The mod podge shoes are something that is real. They just didn't do it right in the video. It's also a better idea to do it with comic books or magazine clippings instead of napkins

    • @qazplm3845
      @qazplm3845 6 лет назад +3

      It could be possible for the napkin shoe one to happen to have a shoe that has the exact same pattern as the napkin or they could just be really skilled. Both are kinda far fetched however.

    • @Varulfen95
      @Varulfen95 6 лет назад +9

      The modpodged shoe does work, it just takes a lot of time and you have to be very careful. A layer of modpodge first, then the napkin, carefully smoothed out with a brush and another layer of modpodge on top. I guess they made it look a lot easier in the video, because the real process would be far too long and detailed to squeeze it in a couple seconds of film.
      I actually did that with a pair of shoes and some fabric once and it turned out quite pretty, but it made the shoes very stiff and uncomfortable to wear. So I wouldn't recommend it. xD
