This was wonderful. I was born in the mid-50's. My mother was in her mid-20s then. I remember her in the late-50's "putting herself together" before my father came home. I remember the smell of the pancake makeup, being yelled at to be quiet while she tried to draw on her eyebrows and eye-liner. Careful choice of the dress and matching shoes. If they were going out, she always had her gloves and scarf. She finished it all off with "Lily of the Valley" cologne and her rhinestones. I thought she was magnificent. Thanks for the memories. Mom passed away a decade ago, but my favorite picture of her is a small portrait of her in 1950's high style. All done up like you in this video, but with her rhinestones and a little Mona Lisa smile.
I see all those people saying in the coments: I wish the 50s style would come back so I could wear those pretty dresses or formal wear. You don't have to wait for these trends to come back! Dress the way you want. I dress in 1950s vintage everyday, trust me, dressing the way you want bursts you with confidence.
Felipe Faraj I too dress in the vintage style. I joined a swing dance club in college and never looked back! So fun! Dressing in this style just feels so classy.
After investigating this particular time period- i fell in love! Haven’t messed with anything yet, but im always looking in articles and traditional home decor, clothing, and music of that period.

I showed my Nanny (grandma) your final look with the car and she said you had everything done perfectly (although she wasnt sure about the makeup since she didnt wear any)! She was also very jealous of you being in a belair (her and my poppy (grandpa) used to own one and she still has it as her all-time favourite car) 😊
My grandma even though it’s 2020, She’s still staying with her 50s style and even spends a LOT of money just to get her favourite style.Its honestly amazing and I’ve started to get it from her now. XD

She's working independently and is putting a lot of work in her videos, so it's hard to keep a strict consistency. Just be happy that she produces such thoughtful videos.

yeah, the lack of pockets is a very recent thing actually. in the 18th and 19th centuries (speaking about western fashion here), the pockets were large enough that you could fit a hell of a lot of stuff in it. i’m not exaggerating either, sometimes people used their skirt supports in the 18th century (like, when the dresses were extremely wide but not all that thick) as pockets. that’s why they’re called pocket hoops sometimes.

I think it's so interesting to see how the construction of the dresses reflect the decades they were made in. The vintage dress worked perfectly with the undergarments that it was intended to go with, whereas the modern dress was inspired by the 50s silhouette but obviously couldn't work with the genuine 50s clothing.
I wouldnt mind seeing a 1920's video if you are looking for another decade video? I loved that this one involved experts, history, facts, where the inspirations came from, comparisons, etc. Personally, I have always been a big fan of the 1920s from the era and big events happening, the fashion sense, the dancing or social outlets, the change from then to now, and I would love you take on it. You do not have to of course, just an idea in case you are ever thinking about another era.
This woman is incredible in the stuff she puts out for the viewers. A culture trip down the history lane with such social analysis shows she is not just a beauty, but a beauty with brains! Alright! (Safiya style)

"it's hard to come up with just one look that defines 2018 style." It's SUPER easy to define the 2020 style: Nice top + PJ/sweat pants; and long, bed-head hair in desperate need of a trim. :D
She does look very beautiful, and while I might be a little partial (I dress in 40's/50's inspired fashion everyday) I do think she looks the best in it. That is sort of part of the 50's look though. Petticoats/girdles/bullet bras were there to help give all women that iconic hourglass shape. Bullet bras helped a flatter chest look full, petticoats gave the illusion of hips to those that didn't have them. By wearing things that make your top and bottom half look bigger, and your middle the smallest, then it helps all figures look like the ideal figure. So the classic new look 50's style really looks great on anyone because the foundation garments help give everyone that shape!
I majored in costume design in college with an emphasis in period fashion. There is a huge difference between actual vintage and vintage reproduction. Stores like Unique Vintage (which is one of my favorite stores to shop at when I need a vintage fix) that sell vintage reproduction fashion make the clothes with modern undergarments in mind so wearing them with a vintage style bullet bra is going to make them fit very weird and look wrong because they don't have the propper darts to accomodate the odd shape. Also the reason bras were that shape wasn't because of missles or anything to do with Freud. Actually it was because the technology at the time was changing because of new materials created fir the war that were now available for designers to use (like synthetic fabrics and certain types of foam used to pad bras). Before that all bras were soft satin cups with no padding. The problem was they were still figuring out how to work with the new materials and didn't yet know how to mold the padding to a natural breast shape so they sewed a seam on the bottom edge and made a cone shape.
Oh and I don’t know if you’ll see this but PLEASE do the 1912 fashion! Like what Kate Winslet wore in Titanic!! I ADORED those outfits! Especially with the huge hats! Swoon!!
I love everything about this look. The way Saf paid attention to even the smallest details (such as undergarments) really shows how much research she put into it. Also that bullet bra, kudos to her for wearing that.
I wish this series went back to the 40's, 30's, and 20's. Those were some cool eras in fashion and super dramatic. You in a 30's frock would be glam and witchy and amazing. A new installment of the series, perhaps??
Not just those eras but then go further back, past few centuries worth of fashion! Would also be cool to see her dress up in a kimono and traditional clothing of other countries.
i LOVE the 50s silhouette!! a few years ago at high school we had a sock-hop themed dance, so i picked out a 50s vintage evening dress, and it's probably one of my favorite dresses i've ever worn
40's to 60's must have been crazy. Imagine having to rebuild your whole weardrobe completely every decade. Why are ppl so mad 😂 They went from war to miniskirts in 2 decades! That’s a big change, that’s all.
From the photos I saw of my mom and aunts, they didn't. Of course they sewed most of their own clothes so newer fashions would get added in fairly consistently, but reworked hand-me-downs were standard. My mother (born mid 1930s and one of five daughters) didn't have a new unworn dress until her wedding.

Most people like my grandma and great grandma had to sew there on clothes which my grandma ended up being a fashion diseigner (I can’t spell sry) and my other grandma who grow up in Hawaii used LEAVES to make her clothes
My parents had a '57 Belair, but it was a station wagon. Black exterior, red interior. They bought it brand new in '57. I was just a baby, born in Dec. of '56. That car's engine was sugared in '62, and then they bought a brand new '62 Impala, red inside and out. We still had that car until we left Michigan in 1970. My dad sold it to a car restorer, and it's still around today. Great job on your 50s look. Nailed it totally. (Jan Griffiths).
i love how safiya puts facts into these videos too, and the history of the decade rather than just focusing on clothing alone. i love 50s fashion, music, cars, etc. and this was amazing sksjsksj
Safiya is one of the few stand out youtubers today. You can tell that actual work and effort go into her video and doesn't just churn out youtube topics that are currently trending for the sake of views. Even if it is a topic that has been tackled by 1000 other youtubers hers will always stand out for being well researched and from her unique point of view. Which seems to be showing a genuine interest and curiosity in the topic. Added to that is Safiya's sense of humour that just makes great content that I always enjoy whether I have an interest in 1950s fashion or not. I don't think you could define Safiya's content as any one thing, like comedy, beauty, sketch, educational, curiosity because her videos are often all these things rolled into one. It's like she has taken the educational and research style of videos and applied it to pop culture and integrated it with her sense of humour. I don't know what the point of this is, other than that kind of hard work and originality is so hard to find on youtube these days (even among big youtubers that have been around for years) that I have to call it when I see it.
Underrated comment. I agree completely. It's hard to find content on RUclips that is well rounded in so many different areas, and Saf has really mastered it.
I'm not joking but Safiya looks exactly how my grandmother would dress up in the 50s. She used to be a model for a small high end clothing store in Corpus Christi and would always get free clothes from them. She's 83 now and still a gorgeous woman. EDIT: my grandma passed away the day before Thanksgiving 2022. She died peacefully and was still as beautiful as she was back in her prime RIP grandma!
AliSakurai Haha my grandma was being born in the early 50’s But her mom (who was born in the 20’s (still alive. Congrats great grandma)) was a model for several different clothing stores and would also get free clothing from all of them. She’s still pretty beautiful. And then I have a couple of other models in the family, like my cousin. He’s an adult now. (I haven’t seen him in years so I don’t know his age) He’s gone into a very goth style, which really suits him.

august Exactly. What people think of 1920s is very different from what it actually was, ugh. Even if you try to google the style you just get pictures of halloween costumes that are nowhere near the actual style
august I have to disagree there, the young “flapper” would’ve definitely rolled down her stockings “rouged her knees.” While most women kept their knees covered, there were some exceptions. Claiming “NO KNEES” isn’t 100% accurate. @Lana banana Yes, there were flowy dresses like the “robe de style,” not all dresses were the stereotypical boxy look. The more modest woman of the 1920s would’ve chosen the ‘robe de style’ to go out in. You also see more “flowy” as the decade ends.
Fringes were part of the 50's interpretation of the 20's. Most of our idea of the 20's is based on 50's media, and they changed a lot, since the 20's ideas about liberation, not giving a fluck, looking ugly to site everyone, and just all the general "we just survived a war, so feck everything" attitude and all the things that brought about, didn't fit with the 50's very different reaction to surviving a war, which was very traditional and conservative. Anyways yeah, fringes weren't popular as there just wasn't the machinery to mass produce clothing like that, fringes would pretty much have to be sewn on one at a time, so while some dresses might have a row or 2 of fringes, the all over swishy fringe wasn't a thing.

I think bullet bras were great for new moms, as it probably allowed for nothing to be pressing against the nipples, which would be very uncomfortable immediately after giving birth, and would allow space for cloth to be tucked in to absorb breast milk, which often leaks for a while after giving birth, without it showing through the cup, and also helping to avoid soggy clothes in public. The 50s was also a time when people obsessed with modernizing everything. Household appliances were getting more and more common and efficient, the space race was in full swing, and there was an obsession with the future and sci-fi in books, and radio programs. So, it probably appealed to people at the time for both practical and fashionable uses.
Funny thing: I've always liked the 1950s and 1960s for the use of gloves in fashion. With shows like MadMen, Pan Am and That Girl. Gloves have always looked so pretty, and they just complete the look.
Loved this video!! I know this is mid-50s, but I was born in 1960, This whole thing really takes me back to my childhood! I remember my mom getting ready to go out with my dad, all the makeup pots and jars and powder, the dresses, shoes, everything matched. The hair! OMG, the hair! Mom used to sleep with toilet paper wrapped around her hair so it wouldn't get ruined while she slept. My mom just died this March, this brought back some great memories! I can also remember the mid 60s, one of my aunts wore the pointed "Bullet Bra" or as we called them the "Dixie Cup" bra (they looked like the pointed Dixie Cups that we got snow cones in) all the time. I was always afraid that when she hugged me, I'd get stabbed. I think she stocked up in the 50s, she wore those bras all her life.
Loky Saint Thank you so much. I went up to Michigan earlier this month and my sister and I had her ashes placed next to our dad. It was a very emotional time but we also had fun remembering many great times. Mom was particularly hard to loose, it was very sudden and unexpected. She was my best friend, my rock and my confidant. My sister and I are close, too, we were like the 3 Musketeers.
Asura_Choi It was fun, I was a kid in the 60s, a teen in the 70s, an adult in the 80s. I have to say the 80s and 90s were, for me, the best times but I do have some great memories as a kid and a teen, too.

I absolutely love clothing from the 50s. I try to keep the fit and flare skirts in my wardrobe because they make me feel pretty and feminine. Skirts, in my opinion, are way more comfortable than pants. I love that other people also like this type of fashion and would like to wear it. ❤

Wow, this video is brilliant. Love the historical story-telling aspect of it - super informative. Also, the accompanying pictures and videos from back in the day + the background music really give it an authentic feel. The goal was to dress like a 1950s gal, but I learned stuff I didn’t even know I was curious about along the way. This might as well be a documentary.

Susan Chraibi Rosie was a riveter, she was putting steel rivets into things at a factory, probably with a big powertool as its way faster than using a giant hammer. It wouldn't fit the poster image if she was just inserting tiny rivets with a small hand tool. Look at 1930s to 1940s things like steel bridges to see the size of old school rivets, and remember someone had to flatten them in place one by one!

I think it's so interesting to see how the construction of the dresses reflect the decades they were made in. The vintage dress worked perfectly with the undergarments that it was intended to go with, whereas the modern dress was inspired by the 50s silhouette but obviously couldn't work with the genuine 50s clothing.
I wouldnt mind seeing a 1920's video if you are looking for another decade video? I loved that this one involved experts, history, facts, where the inspirations came from, comparisons, etc.
Personally, I have always been a big fan of the 1920s from the era and big events happening, the fashion sense, the dancing or social outlets, the change from then to now, and I would love you take on it.
You do not have to of course, just an idea in case you are ever thinking about another era.
I hope she just goes back in time as far as possible. It would be cool to see her do Victorian fashion!

She does look very beautiful, and while I might be a little partial (I dress in 40's/50's inspired fashion everyday) I do think she looks the best in it. That is sort of part of the 50's look though. Petticoats/girdles/bullet bras were there to help give all women that iconic hourglass shape. Bullet bras helped a flatter chest look full, petticoats gave the illusion of hips to those that didn't have them. By wearing things that make your top and bottom half look bigger, and your middle the smallest, then it helps all figures look like the ideal figure. So the classic new look 50's style really looks great on anyone because the foundation garments help give everyone that shape!

I majored in costume design in college with an emphasis in period fashion. There is a huge difference between actual vintage and vintage reproduction. Stores like Unique Vintage (which is one of my favorite stores to shop at when I need a vintage fix) that sell vintage reproduction fashion make the clothes with modern undergarments in mind so wearing them with a vintage style bullet bra is going to make them fit very weird and look wrong because they don't have the propper darts to accomodate the odd shape. Also the reason bras were that shape wasn't because of missles or anything to do with Freud. Actually it was because the technology at the time was changing because of new materials created fir the war that were now available for designers to use (like synthetic fabrics and certain types of foam used to pad bras). Before that all bras were soft satin cups with no padding. The problem was they were still figuring out how to work with the new materials and didn't yet know how to mold the padding to a natural breast shape so they sewed a seam on the bottom edge and made a cone shape.

From the photos I saw of my mom and aunts, they didn't. Of course they sewed most of their own clothes so newer fashions would get added in fairly consistently, but reworked hand-me-downs were standard. My mother (born mid 1930s and one of five daughters) didn't have a new unworn dress until her wedding.

My parents had a '57 Belair, but it was a station wagon. Black exterior, red interior. They bought it brand new in '57. I was just a baby, born in Dec. of '56. That car's engine was sugared in '62, and then they bought a brand new '62 Impala, red inside and out. We still had that car until we left Michigan in 1970. My dad sold it to a car restorer, and it's still around today. Great job on your 50s look. Nailed it totally. (Jan Griffiths).

Safiya is one of the few stand out youtubers today. You can tell that actual work and effort go into her video and doesn't just churn out youtube topics that are currently trending for the sake of views. Even if it is a topic that has been tackled by 1000 other youtubers hers will always stand out for being well researched and from her unique point of view. Which seems to be showing a genuine interest and curiosity in the topic. Added to that is Safiya's sense of humour that just makes great content that I always enjoy whether I have an interest in 1950s fashion or not. I don't think you could define Safiya's content as any one thing, like comedy, beauty, sketch, educational, curiosity because her videos are often all these things rolled into one. It's like she has taken the educational and research style of videos and applied it to pop culture and integrated it with her sense of humour.
I don't know what the point of this is, other than that kind of hard work and originality is so hard to find on youtube these days (even among big youtubers that have been around for years) that I have to call it when I see it.

I'm not joking but Safiya looks exactly how my grandmother would dress up in the 50s. She used to be a model for a small high end clothing store in Corpus Christi and would always get free clothes from them. She's 83 now and still a gorgeous woman.
EDIT: my grandma passed away the day before Thanksgiving 2022. She died peacefully and was still as beautiful as she was back in her prime RIP grandma!

But her mom (who was born in the 20’s (still alive. Congrats great grandma)) was a model for several different clothing stores and would also get free clothing from all of them. She’s still pretty beautiful.
And then I have a couple of other models in the family, like my cousin. He’s an adult now. (I haven’t seen him in years so I don’t know his age) He’s gone into a very goth style, which really suits him.

august Exactly. What people think of 1920s is very different from what it actually was, ugh. Even if you try to google the style you just get pictures of halloween costumes that are nowhere near the actual style
august I have to disagree there, the young “flapper” would’ve definitely rolled down her stockings “rouged her knees.” While most women kept their knees covered, there were some exceptions. Claiming “NO KNEES” isn’t 100% accurate.
@Lana banana Yes, there were flowy dresses like the “robe de style,” not all dresses were the stereotypical boxy look. The more modest woman of the 1920s would’ve chosen the ‘robe de style’ to go out in. You also see more “flowy” as the decade ends.
Fringes were part of the 50's interpretation of the 20's. Most of our idea of the 20's is based on 50's media, and they changed a lot, since the 20's ideas about liberation, not giving a fluck, looking ugly to site everyone, and just all the general "we just survived a war, so feck everything" attitude and all the things that brought about, didn't fit with the 50's very different reaction to surviving a war, which was very traditional and conservative.
Anyways yeah, fringes weren't popular as there just wasn't the machinery to mass produce clothing like that, fringes would pretty much have to be sewn on one at a time, so while some dresses might have a row or 2 of fringes, the all over swishy fringe wasn't a thing.

I think bullet bras were great for new moms, as it probably allowed for nothing to be pressing against the nipples, which would be very uncomfortable immediately after giving birth, and would allow space for cloth to be tucked in to absorb breast milk, which often leaks for a while after giving birth, without it showing through the cup, and also helping to avoid soggy clothes in public. The 50s was also a time when people obsessed with modernizing everything. Household appliances were getting more and more common and efficient, the space race was in full swing, and there was an obsession with the future and sci-fi in books, and radio programs. So, it probably appealed to people at the time for both practical and fashionable uses.

Funny thing: I've always liked the 1950s and 1960s for the use of gloves in fashion. With shows like MadMen, Pan Am and That Girl. Gloves have always looked so pretty, and they just complete the look.
Loved this video!! I know this is mid-50s, but I was born in 1960, This whole thing really takes me back to my childhood! I remember my mom getting ready to go out with my dad, all the makeup pots and jars and powder, the dresses, shoes, everything matched. The hair! OMG, the hair! Mom used to sleep with toilet paper wrapped around her hair so it wouldn't get ruined while she slept. My mom just died this March, this brought back some great memories! I can also remember the mid 60s, one of my aunts wore the pointed "Bullet Bra" or as we called them the "Dixie Cup" bra (they looked like the pointed Dixie Cups that we got snow cones in) all the time. I was always afraid that when she hugged me, I'd get stabbed. I think she stocked up in the 50s, she wore those bras all her life.

Loky Saint Thank you so much. I went up to Michigan earlier this month and my sister and I had her ashes placed next to our dad. It was a very emotional time but we also had fun remembering many great times. Mom was particularly hard to loose, it was very sudden and unexpected. She was my best friend, my rock and my confidant. My sister and I are close, too, we were like the 3 Musketeers.

Wow, this video is brilliant. Love the historical story-telling aspect of it - super informative. Also, the accompanying pictures and videos from back in the day + the background music really give it an authentic feel. The goal was to dress like a 1950s gal, but I learned stuff I didn’t even know I was curious about along the way. This might as well be a documentary.

Safia...u should keep going with the rest of the 20th century!! The 40's, 30's, (my personal fav and the one u would look incredible in) the 20's and then the 1910's and the 1900's still need to be explored! I love when u do these videos and there are 5 more decades that need attention. I know u would have fun dressing like a flapper in the 20's and Rosie the Rivitor from the 40's is calling for u to recreate that look!!
Susan Chraibi Rosie was a riveter, she was putting steel rivets into things at a factory, probably with a big powertool as its way faster than using a giant hammer. It wouldn't fit the poster image if she was just inserting tiny rivets with a small hand tool.
Look at 1930s to 1940s things like steel bridges to see the size of old school rivets, and remember someone had to flatten them in place one by one!

Honestly, before watching I was being judgemental and thought who on earth watches a 25 minutes video about a makeover. Turns out I was completely wrong and found it really interesting! I like how it also has a social analysis, trying to explain why the fashion was that way in the 50's. Great video!!

I *LOVE* 50s-inspired fashion! I'm with you on the bullet bras, but I love the silouhettes and the general style of the dresses. I plan on having a significant portion of my closet taken over by 50s-style outfits in the near future.
