Motionless was a band that I did not hear about until 2018. Once I did, I was hooked by all of it. The steady progression of their sound and refusing to stick to just one theme is refreshing. Listening to bands like Motionless in White, Bring me the horizon, Wage War, Bad Omens, etc. allows me to be moved through all my emotions. It's not just heavy anger and angst. I love that rock and metal bands are starting to do this nowadays because it felt like that type of music was growing stale in the 2010's. And this is coming from a lifelong Metalhead.

Another thing i think is overlooked is the fact that they broke one of the key rules of a successful band, and that’s maintaining a stable lineup. They have gone through so many member changes and still somehow every member that has come in has managed to build a following within the fanbase. even their new bass player has left a mark on their music and fanbase and he’s played on i think 2 albums (i feel like that’s wrong, so correct me if i am). A lot of bands who have that high of a turnover often fall out of relevancy.

I remember hearing "Ghost in the Mirror" off of a label sampler in 2009, then I gave Creatures a listen when it came out in 2010. I fell in love immediately. Even though I love many albums by many bands, Creatures holds a special place in my heart. After that I went back and listened to their even earlier stuff. And as the years went on, I listened to every album, and loved them all. I waited through two bands at their stage at Warped Tour 2012 just so I could be in the front row for Motionless, and I almost passed out by the end because I got dehydrated, but I sang every damn word of their set. I never expected them to blow up this much, but I am so happy they did. They're good dudes, and talented as well, and they deserve it!
Their "thing" being insanely catchy choruses and super heavy elsewhere in the song really worked for me, and clearly I am not the only one!
Lol and I remember Chris's Tumblr post, that definitely resonated with me because I hated that whole savior culture thing as well.

Motionless in White was my first show ever. They opened for william control with Black Veil Brides in October of 2010 at my aunts club in Tucson. I went and bought creatures the next day with my own 12 year old money and still have it to this day. They've been one of my favorite bands since that night. Less than 300 people in a packed club going bananas. Every album has been a step up and leap forward for them. Despite the line up changes, they've captured a vibe unlike any other band.
Sidebar- if you like Motionless, definitely go give Dark Divine a listen. They give me that "creatures" era with even more energy and emotion.

I appreciate that you are covering some more current bands lately that have members in their 30s and are still releasing relevant music (I know they've been around for 20 years). It's refreshing when you tell the story at the midway point instead of the end.

Perhaps their heaviest, but I think Finn's overall point was that from an objective standpoint the songwriting and song structure in following albums were more defined and cohesive, with more diversity and melodic elements to attract the attention of more than just the Warped Tour/metalcore scene.

I saw them on tour last October with Knocked Loose and you know, I've seen hundreds of shows and that show was hands down the BEST SHOW I HAVE EVER SEEN. I personally, as a 2000s emo kid, live for theatrics and the costumes and the makeup and the themes and they really just fucking nailed it. Getting to hear Slaughterhouse live with Bryan was just...I doubt anything will top that honestly.

Their first demo is crazy, and I kinda wish Finn would have mentioned it. "Trace Out the Heart" is kind of a banger even though it's really rough and barely recognizable, but would have killed it with the 2005 emo kids if it was spread around more.

I've got a story about Motionless in White. I saw them in 2019 at Aftershock in Sacramento CA. They not only sounded AMAZING Live, Chris Motionless is a frontman, he got the entire crowd going and he even said "On your drive home, put on our new album Disguise, its your soundtrack for this festival in the parking lot". Later that night, my friends and I where trying to get to our hotel room to meet up with other friends and as we walked to the ride share section, we passed by the parking lot and everyone was playing Disguise

It's crazy that Finn is calling the keyboard parts they took from Bleeding Through and credited Attack Attack. That's insane to me. They're so explicit about Bleeding Through (like Eighteen Visions) being one of their big inspiration.

You pointed out that they were doing the goth/halloween/black paint stuff and thank you for that. They were one of the only bands in the scene doing that and their image set them so far apart from all the other bands and gave them an identity that was pulled off just right. Chris is a smart guy, there is a reason they’ve done so well and exploded the past five years.
