The opinion of “the kids on TikTok” doesn’t matter. Type O are almost universally adored in the Metal community to this day. Peter was able to alchemize his pain into something beautiful with this band, he continues to touch people’s lives to this day. Pure musical genius.
it doesn't matter but it doesn't allow people to enjoy things as freely because of how obsessed "kids of tiktok" are to be politically correct It's a shame as someone in a younger demographic I know some people who are insufferable when it comes to how "correct" someone is. Really ruins the whole experience of loving music because they won't shut up about what some artist said 20 years ago. I wish more people would just enjoy the music without needing to do a moral background check on the artist or band
An even better joke on October Rust than the outro was the intro joke. The first "song" was called Bad Ground and it was just the sound of buzzing for like 30 seconds or something and then the band came on laughing and invited you to enjoy the rest of the album. They got me with that one. I was checking all the cables on my old stereo trying to figure out why it was just buzzing.
Ironic , I got the World Coming Down repress about a year and a half ago and the minute the record starts - it’s w White Slavery and goes straight to the intro track ‘Skip It ‘ thinking your record is skipping lol. I thought I waited a year for a nothing 🤣 but love the idea that Pete tricked me over a decade in the grave lol
@@deathspells_6665 i've heard that in the cassette version of World Coming Down the first track sounds like a tape being "eaten" by the cassette player lol I've haven´t checked it out myself though
The first album had a similar, though more convoluted joke... The second to last track was called "The Misinterperetation of Silence and It's Disasterous Consequences". It was about a minute and a half of silence, the joke therein being that after a bit, the listener would assume the album was over and shut it off, with the "disasterous consequence" being you'd miss out on the last song.🤣
I saw him at a Laibach show in Manhattan in 1996 and I'll tell you this - I talked to a lot of musicians I liked when I was young and stupid, but I was literally too scared to go up and talk to him. He was also there with a date and it seemed like he couldn't say two sentences to her before some dork came over to interrupt him, so I probably made the right choice for once.
@@spacehamsterZH I met him when I was 13-14 in Atlanta after a show at the Masquerade. My friends and I approached him and he was super nice. He introduced to us to some girl and he was like “ this is the dark mistress…Cindy.”
@@Blade2vampireravehahaha. That’s such a Type-O thing to say. The dark mistress, Cyndi. It reminds me of that Evil Dead movie where the heroines name is Shiela. Idk why. 😂😂😂
Ahh, one of my favorites back in the day. I'll never forget meeting Peter Steele at an industry party in 1999. Got one of the best hugs of my life from that dude. And of course, when I came home and showed my mom the pictures from that trip, she paused at the picture of him and was like... wait a second... that guy looks familiar... and it turned out that she'd seen his issue of Playgirl.
God, I miss this band. No other band I can think of was able to combine sarcastic gallows humor with gorgeously-heavy goth metal and New York hardcore like this (and to be fair, no one else even dare attempt it). I can think of few bands as original as Type O.
@@saturationstation1446 To be perfectly fair, that was a big part of Type O's whole gig. It was meant to be ridiculous to a point. And I can see how off-putting that is on the surface. But they could also play it straight - and the results were often quite amazing. October Rust and World Coming Down had that humor muted (but not gone.) and were gorgeous well-crafted albums. They may have saved their best album for last, though. Dead Again was a raging full-on return to their hardcore roots while retaining their penchant for Beatles-esque melodies and harmonies. Might be the best final album from *any* band. Lots of ways to get into Type O.
Pete was a cool guy. He used my bass rig for a gig in Atlanta and put my band in the thanks list of bloody kisses. Will always respect him for being real. R.I.P. big dawg.
Part of the genius of Type O really comes down to how much of a bag of contradictions they were. For an example, Pete Steele was perhaps one of the coolest, smartest guys in music, yet he lived in his mom’s actual basement for the majority of his life.
@@ellakiedrowski9382 Great song. If you haven’t already, check out Cave In’s album JUPITER and Thought Industry’s SHORT WAVE ON A COLD DAY. Similar spacey rock vibes to FANTASTIC PLANET I think.
I see October Rust as a landmark record. The sound is lush, heavy, ethereal, and haunting. To this day, there’s nothing that sounds like it. Usually I don’t much care when celebrities die, but Pete’s death actually made me kinda sad. Glad to see these guys getting more attention, even if it feels like it’s coming a little late.
I met Pete after a show in Fort Lauderdale back in 97' I told him how their music had helped me get through a lot of shit and he said, " Thank you for coming and wasting your time with us tonight, we really appreciate it." it is always nice to meet one of your idols/heroes and they are worthy of the regard you have for them. He is missed.
I once said to Kenny at a show I was later booted from lol, that they had helped me more than any psychiatrist and his response was, "and we're a lot cheaper too." My friends and I busted out laughing. RIP PETE
Met him in Dallas after a show. Nice dude hung out will us in the cold for about a hour beside their bus. I was surprised. I thought he would be a dick
Yeah I didn't read your comment before I made another comment but I've met the band at a few shows. After one show my little sister who was a giant drunk went up to Pete Steele and took a bottle of wine out of his hand, she took a big long gulp and then went in to take another only spit it all over him telling him "you have shit taste wine". The band and the crew all started laughing hysterically at that. My sister as evil as she is was about 2 to 2½ feet shorter than him and weighed 100 lb soaking wet. I thought it was going to be yet another time that I had to save her from a pummelling. Pete Steele was actually very nice about it. I got the feeling that he might have been interested in her, many men who like to have that crazy lady dangerous s€x but I can swooped in and brought her back to where we were sitting in the bar with others. Pete Steele sent the whole table a round of drinks. He was a nice guy. RIP
Dude, my entire senior year of high school ('94-95) was colored Type O green! They seriously save me. That summer after I graduated, I got to see them play at Milwaukee Metalfest and had the chance to meet and chat with Peter outside the venue. Good memories.
Pete Steele was one of the most underrated rock composers of the modern era. He wrote the lyrics, wrote the music, arrangement, everything. Right up there with McCartney...a musician Pete looked up to, or was at least inspired by. This man was a MASSIVE talent. All the gimmicky shite aside. Had a vision and the drive and creativity to pull it off. Credit to his friends/bandmates for supporting him. They really were loyal as hell, staying committed to their friend's vision. Pete Steele. Massive man. Massive talent. Massive loss. RIP Greenman. You are missed.
I went to the Coal Chamber/Type O Negative tour back in the year 2000, it was called the "Road Rage" tour I even got to meet Duke Collins from the band The Deadlights and Dez Fafara from Coal Chamber. Dez was cool, but he seemed to be pre-occupied with the backstage party, he talked to us fans for a bit but didn't really respect me asking him about Sharon Osbourne haha (Sharon used to be Coal Chambers manager for you kids who don't know) then he quickly left the group of us fans backstage and returned back to partying and drinking backstage and I returned to the venue to watch Type O Negative!
I miss Pete so much! Growing up not far from NYC, Type O and Peter would always play shows and and even hang out here. Pete had a girlfriend here he would take the train up to see for the weekend or whatever. She had this TINY 80's hatchback Pete would be seen driving. Half hanging out of the windows like a folded praying mantis. He was sooo funny in an extremely sarcastic and in a very dry way.
I recall an interview where Pete said he wished he would’ve just stayed working for the parks department and that it is his dream job. Was a very interesting perspective from a front man of a popular, influential band.
Oh man...this one is pretty heavy for me. I have a weird connection with Pete through an old friend and mutual love interest...that one song "everyone i love is dead," is not an exaggeration. You were dead on with the whole Dad thing, he really wanted to just be a normal guy.
This is a sad story and I like him even more now having watched this… this is having never been a fan but rather neutral on the band. The 90’s were different and everyone understood that not everyone should have the same beliefs/opinions/goals. & The digital (progressive) hive-mind didn’t exist yet.
@ColeWheeler4Lyfe dude exactly. I grew up the 80s and 90s and that collective hive mind bs was not the "norm" that it is today....its like people back then were less informed than nowadays but they had a more personal opinion and whatever it was it wasnt enough to break a real friendship, u just rolled w it, nyc in the 90s was still grimy and you had to grind but it had a lot more personality than today, shit today even whole different cities in different countries share that hive mind bs....idk im rambling here but u hit the nail on the head.
@@radyoung779 Really? If so, then damn. Interesting coincidence. It was a really surreal situation to say the absolute least, especially since I looked up to him in my teen years. Her and Pete never got super serious, IIRC, but the man was pretty crazy for her. She had seriously considered his proposals but she wanted to stay friends. They were still good friends up to his death. I never got to really meet Pete, unless you count seeing his band live, which I only did once, unfortunately. My life has been speckled with weird moments like that. I'd rather not give away too many details (already made that mistake once) out of respect for both her and Pete. I feel though it is important to say that I didn't leave with hard feelings towards him (or her,) quite the opposite. I wish I could have known him better. His music made the world an easier place to deal with during some lonely moments in my life, and I am thankful that he existed.

@@danteshollowedgrounds I’m just saying they’re the perfect goth unisex band that I could see getting a resurgence thru TikTok. And Deftones is so overdone for me at this point lol. But oh well Type O Negative also has the right amount of fame and respect on their name as is
16:30 "An unborn child should not have to pay the price for you being too lazy to go to the pharmacy and get a condom." Sage, true and NOT actually inconsistent with a moderate pro-choice ideology.
Of course that's true. That doesn't mean a 10 year old victim of rape and incest shouldn't be able to get an abortion. And no matter how careful you are, birth control isn't 100% reliable.
As a fellow Brooklynite who saw Type O just 6 months before Pete passed, I would say he and the band are definitely a product of their time and place. No one hassled me or anything though at their concert. Had a great time, though Josh wasn’t playing since he was busy with his day job (the got someone to fill in). I remember seeing Kenny randomly in Times Square and shouting about how I love his band as he was walking past me. He turned a bit, kept walking, then I guess thought enough to half-heartedly wave. Lol, these guys are just very Brooklyn 😂
World Coming Down is both a dark and epic album. "Josh Silver" was the keyboardist, not guitarist. Also Pete was half Polish not Russian. RIP Green Man 🙏
A wise man once told me addicts use to change the way they feel because they don’t like themselves or how they feel. I think it’s the closest thing to a root cause for addiction that has ever been said. I can totally relate to Pete’s music and lyrics and I relate to the self loathing. I always thought I Don’t Wanna Be Me was about addiction as much as it was about being a celebrity.
Steele's not Russian but Polish on his father's side. He talked about that himself. Could you please add at least a note on the video about that mistake? It has always been, but in the modern political context, that's an even more important distinction.
Finn I know you said you've been feeling not great about your content lately but this was great. Lots of insight, depth, relevance. And I'm not even a Type O Negative fan. 👊👊
I have a feeling this guy never listened to Type O before deciding on them for content. ANYONE who is a fan knows what Pete really died of. A few inconsistencies in this video, mostly just a regurge of what countless other's content.
I connect so deeply with Peter’s humbleness and self doubt. FFS their best of album is called the “least worst.” He never took himself too seriously and made some of the best metal music, literally defining the genre of doom and goth metal.
I met type o in Peoria Illinois. Really really nice guys. I have met a lot of artists over there years and that was one of the best experiences. Peter was really down to earth. My heart was pumping meeting him and he could not have been a more down to earth friendly guy. What a voice RIP
I'm not the only one who thinks this because they were literally referred to as "The Drab Four", but Type O Negative were the Beatles of goth rock. Their chord structures and melodies have a classic feel to them (songs like Todd's Ship Gods, Be My Druidess, IYDKMIGTHTKY among many others) that's reminiscent of the Beatles and many other bands of that era. However the lyrics and sarcasm, cynicism, appreciation for nature, love & loss paint a unique picture i haven't quite found in any other group. Truly one of a kind and their music is my all time favorite. My first tattoo was their symbol on the upper arm and almost 30 years after first hearing them I'm still blown away by their sound and presence. Long live Type O💚💚💚💚 *shoutout to Carnivore btw
The other day you said that you are burned out from making these kind of 'Wikipedia summaries', but in this particular case I think you added your touch to it and I would presume that you also enjoyed making this video as much as I did watching it and listening to you putting things into perspective. Thanks
I'm sure it helps too that Type o Negative is an interesting band, whether you like them or not. Hell I only really like a handful of their songs but they're interesting dudes. It's hard to get into it when you're talking about Papa Roach
I second this sentiment. Great video woth great context setting towards the end and Pete's upbringing and convincing the viewer that that part really should be considered when remembering the band and Pete steel. Love your vids finn, ignore the haters bud, make content that you are happy with!!!
I'm a huge fan of Type O negative, and it's a pleasure to see that people still talking about this band, it means that Pete really left his mark on this world... Nice video!
Type O were unique on so many fronts but most of all the songwriting on their albums is what stood out most to me. I genuinely don't know how they manage to be so catchy and so heavy and experimental at the same time. Every album sounded different, World Coming Down is like pure Gothic Doom metal, but you can sing along to it. Then they put Life Is Killing Me out, and its a total 180, its pop all the way through, but it still sounds like them and its still so catchy.
Never a fan of throw-away videos on random subjects, this mini-doc was not that. I was pleasantly surprised and appreciated the analysis on Pete's views toward the end of the video. Thanks.
Peter was a rare gem. My uncle had been friends with him since the Carnivore days. Last time I saw them was when they toured with Lacuna Coil when they came to Baton Rouge. Great consistently odd band that came out at the right place and time.
Red Water and Everything Dies are some of the most depressing songs I've ever heard, and the thing about their songs is that their depressing songs feel like the weight of the whole world falling on my shoulders, as opposed to others that feel more lonely (like Mad World).
Exactly! And not only the bass TONE, but his bass lines are intricate, very interesting and beautifully complex...plus the guy could SING!!! As a bass player myself, I find him among the most underrated genius bass players of all time! One of the very best there was, in my opinion....It is about time we recognise that!
Pretty sure I read that Pete said the happiest time was when he worked for NYC parks. I think the bands were a creative endeavor and hobby for him, but he wanted to just be a regular dude.
I absolutely love this band. I met Pete a couple of times and he is absolutely hilarious and a really nice guy. It's so sad he left this world so soon, he was such a deep person. He WAS NOT a bad person,, he said alot of things in jest and facts are facts so i'm sure he was brutally honest as well. I miss them and esp pete R.I.P. So talented!
Bloody kisses and Life is killing me are masterpieces of music. A Finnish band called Sentenced, awesome band, are heavily indluenced by type o negative, check them out! Very interesting topic, especially when you shed light on the era this bands grew up in
Finn - thank you for this very even-handed and fair assessment of my all-time favorite band of all time. That began in early 1994 in Copenhagen when a very pregnant graphic designer for a CPH music venue (me) left the art department at the venue in search of coffee. And literally walked straight into Peter Steele. Type O Negative was to play at the punk/metal/alt bar Barbue that night, and Peter had gotten lost somewhere on his way to the green room. I'm 5'1 on a good day. So I looked up. I was used to that. And up. And up. Peter was horrified, empathetic and apologized profusely and most eloquently all the way back to the green room as I laughed it off. Of course I had to go to the show that night. They blew my mind. I met them several times since, and Peter never forgot. Ever since - these 30+ years and counting - Type O has been the band in my head and in my heart, and the soundtrack of my life. I've never stopped listening. When I wrote my debut novel 'Quantum Demonology', Peter gate-crashed as a major character - the literal Saint Peter. Which is one reason why it is also dedicated to him. The world is a lesser place without his music and that depth-of-Hades bass baritone, but at least we have that blacker-than-black music to console us.
That Nativity in Black tribute album to Sabbath is one of the best tribute albums ever made, almost every track is a perfectly-paired loving homage to the metal pioneers by some of the top 90s metal acts, and yet Type O's is still a cut above.
Really appreciate how much personal opinion and introspection you added to this video. I think the thing that drew me to this channel originally was your openness and emotional intelligence. I want more videos like this!
I was devastated when Pete died. I have been a Type O fan since I was in middle school as an edgy goth kid lol. They were working on their next album when he died. It is sad that we will never get to hear it. RIP green man.
I remember getting to see them on Halloween night, in Pittsburgh. It was maybe around 2001. They played an awesome set, complete with the Beatles medley and everything. Especially after Pete’s death, I was really happy to have had that experience.
These are bomb man. This is what brought me to the channel and I love that you're still doing it. I know you said it felt like compiling a wiki page but I've never been a huge type o fan but I've read up on them before and this still felt more informative and easily digestable
@kattykatrina and that's your opinion, only weird part is the mommy part to me. Women liked a felon who turned into a supermodel and an underage kid from target a few years back. I won't be told that liking adult big tiddy/booty tattooed women who also like metal is wrong
Good summary of the trajectory of Type-O! They were my introduction into metal when ever since I heard 'Love You to Death' on a movie soundtrack when I was in my early teens. I didn't know what hit me! Please do more videos on Goth and Industrial genres. Something about Ministry/Al Jorgensen would be great if you have not yet done one.
World Coming Down was the first Type O record I bought and it's still my favorite. It's so dark and depressing but it I think that's what makes it so good, it's real. I'm very thankful I got to see them when they were touring for Dead Again, this band has had a big impact on me in many ways, I was really bummed when Pete passed.
WCD got me through some of my darkest times. Peter Steel's death is probably the only musician, or person of note, that has ever truly impacted me personally.
Love the Carnivore period. Peter once answered in a Danish tv interview whether he had a role model, that Poul from the Beatles could play fantastic bass while he sang to the guitar...
Unreal! Thanks for the plug, now I get to check them out for the first time! ☺️ And one personal note/ idea that I gleaned with while watching this : The right people are always watching, even when you think nobody is paying attention. Great stuff, man, thank you!
This was a cool one! 😎 I had no idea Type-O-Negative had roots in NY harcore. I've never Been the biggest fan. But I appreciate them, and 'I don't want to be me' is also my favorite song of theirs. 😄 At least from what I've heard. I remeber seeing Black #1 on Beavis and Butthead back in the day. 14 year old me didn't get it at all. 😆 But it def left an impression. Kinda like watching a video from 'The Cramps'...
I may be 17 years old but it feels like I have a connection to the band through playing their music. I play 4 instruments the guitar, piano, drums, and vocals. Pete has inspired me to play, sing, and think like him through music. The Green Man will always be remembered.💚🤘
At the time it was released I remember the review that said bits and album for people who want to kills themselves. If you don't want to kills yourself before listening, you will when your done" paraphrased
That's the first of the 3 albums that helped me turn my life around. The End of all Things to Come was second, Supremacy was the last one. I would not be here if not for them.
Met Type-O in 1997 during their tour with Ozzy and Sepultura. Peter was so damn kind and actually let us hang out with them during their soundcheck backstage. One of the best memories from a band that is easily top 5 all time for me.
Peter formed Sun-Zero after Carnivore. Finding that the name was already taken (and they had all gotten the tattoo) they needed to come up with another name, hence Type O Negative
I interviewed Pete Steele via telephone when I was about 16 around 1987 or so when I lived in Michigan. He was still in the band Carnivore and "Retaliation" had just been released. I was late getting in, when I arrived home I found my mother talking to him on the phone, LOL.
The only thing thats next is the exraordinary story of Life Of Agony, who had Sal Abrusco as their drummer at first, thats the guy who brought all the slowy doomy drops to both band's music... Fucking love it.
I am so glad that you made a video about "Type O Negative". When you hear Pete Steele's statements, you don't think that he was a bad person, but rather that he was a very creative guy who wasn't at peace with himself. In my opinion, the importance of "Type O Negative" in the history of rock music can be compared to "Joy Division" or "My Bloody Valentine". By the way, could you maybe make videos about the latter two bands?
Discovered them with "Bloody Kisses" when it came out. "Summer Breeze" blew my mind. I was 27 at the time, and thought it was the greatest cover I had ever heard. I still feel that way, along with "Superstar" by Sonic Youth. Still listen to Type O Negative on a more than regular basis to this day. I feel I understood Pete's humour and use of sarcasm and irony. But yes, they would be cancelled if they were around today. And that would have probably still led to Pete's fate.
I wrote a metal and hardcore zine back in the mid-90's when I was in high school, and because my 33Mhz Macintosh had a modem that also doubled as a fax machine I was able to send faxes to record labels like Earache and Roadrunner to ask for promos to review. Much to my surprise this actually worked and I always reviewed the albums I was sent and one of those albums was October Rust. This is a long-winded way of saying I'm glad I was introduced to them back in the day because I have a habit of tuning stuff out when it becomes super trendy out of nowhere. I'm not trying to be an elitist or anything, but for some reason when things (in my opinion) get overhyped I don't really pay attention to it until much later.

The opinion of “the kids on TikTok” doesn’t matter. Type O are almost universally adored in the Metal community to this day. Peter was able to alchemize his pain into something beautiful with this band, he continues to touch people’s lives to this day. Pure musical genius.
it doesn't matter but it doesn't allow people to enjoy things as freely because of how obsessed "kids of tiktok" are to be politically correct
It's a shame as someone in a younger demographic I know some people who are insufferable when it comes to how "correct" someone is. Really ruins the whole experience of loving music because they won't shut up about what some artist said 20 years ago. I wish more people would just enjoy the music without needing to do a moral background check on the artist or band
Especially amongst women

All those spineless clowns are the ones who need to be cancelled.
God, I miss this band. No other band I can think of was able to combine sarcastic gallows humor with gorgeously-heavy goth metal and New York hardcore like this (and to be fair, no one else even dare attempt it). I can think of few bands as original as Type O.
glad you can enjoy something so much. it sounds comically bad to me tho lol
Same. Never heard of a band like them before. I love their music so much!!! 😶🌫️
@@saturationstation1446 you must be fun at parties
deftones did it better

Type-O was a moment in time to never be replicated.
Even Peter Steele would agree
And a great time it was
I went to the Coal Chamber/Type O Negative tour back in the year 2000, it was called the "Road Rage" tour I even got to meet Duke Collins from the band The Deadlights and Dez Fafara from Coal Chamber.
Kind of like the 1970's Bad News Bears.
Summer breeze opening up the first "I know What You Did last Summer" credits was perfect. Great vid, Finn.
I recall an interview where Pete said he wished he would’ve just stayed working for the parks department and that it is his dream job.
Was a very interesting perspective from a front man of a popular, influential band.
he didnt like being a band all that much
I've been a Type O Negative fan for a while and seeing them get more popular these past two years makes me happy :')

Really?

Yeah I've never thought Don't Wanna Be Me as anything else other than an ode to self-loathing and addiction. Also prophetic, which I love/hate.

Long live Type O💚💚💚💚

Thank you for making this. Type O is one of my favorites! RIP Pete! ❤

Finn, Josh wasn't the guitarist, Kenny was their guitarist, Josh was their keyboard player.

Finding that the name was already taken (and they had all gotten the tattoo) they needed to come up with another name, hence Type O Negative
Sub-Zero,
Sorry trying to type on my phone
Actually; Repulsion, then Sub-Zero.
There’s a recent video by a channel called Rock N’ Roll True Stories that’s pretty in depth.
I wish Peter was still around, but I'm sure he is at peace with himself now.
A goth gf introduced me to Bloody Kisses, and then October Rust came out, and to this day it’s probably a top 5 all time album for me.
Best punk rock MBA in a while! Great video finn!
Type O will always be one of my favorite bands. And I am glad I had a chance to meet Peter before he passed.
I saw them open for Queensryche. It was an outdoor venue and they came out while the sun was still out and I remember thinking it was wrong. 😅
I'm grateful to have gotten the chance to see Type O live in concert back in the day. Great show!
I never thought you would do Type O. Thank you.
Rest easy, our green giant 💚🖤 You are missed 😣
