  • I hope this video was insightful for some of you! I'm sure there are more variations I didn't cover & I also feel a little bit silly for forgetting to mention the Nintendo Select editions while editing.
    But let me know if there's anything I missed worth mentioning! And if you happen to live outside North America are there any interesting variation differences in your region? Also at the end of the day, do any of these variations matter for your collection? I would love to know!

    This was interesting and informative! I was wondering if anyone knew the differences between all the 3ds print editions. Since prices are already high and I’m just collecting games to play, I don’t mind the edition or world editions.

    • @orbalology
      @orbalology  2 года назад +5

      Honestly this is the best mindset to have and certainly saves a lot of time & money if you're not too pressed over the specific variants.

      @dellin1213 2 года назад +1

      So is there a big difference in price?

    • @orbalology
      @orbalology  2 года назад +2

      Price varies depending on game & what cover variant you're looking at. But generally world editions are the cheapest, even for brand new copies over most used standard copies. But with luck sometimes the variant doesn't matter too much for price, it's dependent on the seller and what they think is most desirable.

    The FR versions are sold throughout Canada. As Canada is multilingual, Nintendo always released the FR versions of their games across Canada. Third party publishers don't usually have the FR versions as far as I've seen. Also, for the first print numbering, I've noticed Capcom also keeps the 0 and A scheme at the barcode.

    • @orbalology
      @orbalology  2 года назад +1

      Oh I see, thanks for letting me know! I think I may have gotten a bit thrown with how Canada released 3DS games because I didn't see VGP or PGP list any FR versions on their website specifically. But maybe that's because new/sealed ones are hard to find at the stores?
      Also interesting about Capcom! I just have Monster Hunter Stories from them which I want to say is Nintendo & has the 0/A numbering.

    • @MaryyamFatima
      @MaryyamFatima 2 года назад

      @@orbalology I don't think many FR version are available sealed anymore, which is likely why you won't see them often. I'm sure they printed a lot less copies of FR versions to begin with, for obvious reasons.
      I actually like collecting the FR versions as they're pretty unique to Canada. I sourced Zelda OOT from Quebec and they actually had a much bigger french manual for the game compared to the one I sourced in my province which had separate english and french manuals (10 pages folded french manual compared to the 4 in the english manual/french version from my province). So even within Canada, different provinces get regional variants apparently.

    • @orbalology
      @orbalology  2 года назад +2

      Oh that's really interesting! It's surprising how much effort Nintendo used to put into some of these 3DS physical games, and even going the extra mile for some of these variants.

    • @MaryyamFatima
      @MaryyamFatima 2 года назад +1

      @@orbalology So true! When I got the Quebec version, I felt shortchanged lol. The two manuals (english/french) in my copy weren't nearly as nice as the single french manual. They're also both second print runs, so it's not even like one of them was a different run.

    This has me curious about which games in my collection are first print, and what is second print. Did a little snooping around and there is the whole white case/red case for Mario games which is kind of interesting.

    • @orbalology
      @orbalology  2 года назад +2

      Oh yes, and I think for at least Europe & Japan they had yellow case options for New Super Mario Bros 2 too? Though I've seen some people sell those cases with NCST games - I'm not sure if that was an option or they just swapped the cases with another region. But yeah those color changes were definitely interesting choices by Nintendo.

    Interesting video ^^ I also bought SMT Soul Hackers from Atlus recently and thought it was fake because there was no manual. Fun fact, in europe pal 3ds game cases were a bit thicker and in the case of soul hackers it was the american one atlus used, which is thinner. Now I got different sizes of 3ds games in my collection even though they are all pal games xD

    • @orbalology
      @orbalology  2 года назад +2

      Oh I think I remember hearing how some of the last PAL 3DS print runs had thinner cases because they were using the Japanese and/or NA cases. Hopefully the size difference isn't too noticeable! I'm not sure if it would be something that would bug me or not. But I'm glad you were able to grab a copy of Soul Hackers, curious how the new game coming out later this year will go.

  • @theanjo
    @theanjo 7 месяцев назад

    Personally I can deal with World editions. Having the colored corner on the back and the label on the front isn’t much of a bother to me since they aren’t on the spines.
    Though recently, I’ve compared World and a regular first print of Pokémon games (Specifically World Edition Alpha Sapphire and regular first print Omega Ruby) while cataloging my collection, and noticed the manuals/inserts were different. World editions usually had the electronic manual guide on a single page of thin paper, but the regular ones used the thicker and glossy booklet. Also no Club Nintendo codes for games that had them in NA, so the relevant inserts or back printing on the cover art is not there. Strangely, the World Edition Ocarina of Time 3D uses the European Box art, which makes me wonder if other games had that treatment.
    I unfortunately don’t have any World edition versions of games that came with actual manuals in NA, so that might be worth investigating to see if those are on cheaper paper or even omitted entirely!
    I think that’s fine for folks that only want boxed 3DS games, but the fact that the manuals and such are more cheaply produced kinda makes me see why World Editions aren’t as highly valued.

    What's the problem with world editions? Just out of curiosity?

    • @orbalology
      @orbalology  2 года назад

      For playing there is nothing wrong with them - they're the same cart as the standard North American version. Collectors however are particular with what edition they want, like you have with book collectors or really any hobby. These version released after the NA versions did so I think they're a bit more common to find brand new right now, making it less desirable or 'valuable' in some collector's eyes. I personally don't like how the world edition logo blocks the cover art. They sort of stick out like a sore thumb, though tbh you can't really tell on the shelf just by looking at the spines. So in sum there's nothing wrong with them and they're a decent option if you want brand new Nintendo published games for MSRP at the moment. But from a value standpoint I think the standard versions will be the preferred versions to own going forward, especially within NA.

  • @fivejedis
    @fivejedis Год назад

    I agree with the world editions being kinda ugly but now with the eShop gone they will probably help a lot of people play these games for a fair price until eventually even world editions get expensive too. If I'm not mistaken in terms of inserts they're usually the same. It's not like first print would have a manual or more inserts and world editions wouldn't. Also the carts they use are typically the same too I couldn't spot any differences so if someone really wanted to they could buy a world edition and upgrade to a first print cover at a later time if they find someone selling the empty box.
