After buying so many games over the previous three years, I've drastically cut back on my game spending in 2024 by using a new rule-I only allow myself to buy a game when I've rolled credits on four of my backlogged titles.
It's been months since I've bought a new game; right now I'm making my way through the Sky trilogy in the Trails series-hot damn, these games can be long!
I had to implement the same rule too 😅

Glad to hear you pre-ordered Tsukihime as well! I just got mine and it both looks and sounds incredible on the OLED switch. I haven't spoiled it for myself, so I'm really excited for this to be my first experience with the story 😊

Glad I helped remind you about that release! It's one I can see going fast like Witch on Holy Night. Though I saw in other countries that they're offering standard editions so there's that at least this time around.
I've also been approaching my collecting this year with a "low buy" mindset, and have found it to be refreshing. I've been able to focus more on purchasing the games I want to play as I intend to play them (with the exception of the odd collector's edition here and there). As someone who has been collecting games from a young age, my collection is now in a place where I'm pretty comfortable with what I have. While I'll always love this aspect of the hobby, I now approach it with more restraint and intentionality.
So cool seeing how much love and care developers put into those collector editions you got.
Waste of time and money imo.
All I care about is the disc/cartridge and if I can play and beat physical games in 20 years then that’s what matters.
You really think in 20 years people would care about the extra pins and artbook if they can play the physical game on the intended hardware?

Recently I have stopped collecting physical not for budget reasons but just not enough time to play everything I own. I am now living through yt videos like yours. It's cool to at least see these editions and the differences between platforms.

Baten Kaitos Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean is my favorite game of all time, seeing people pick up the HD Remaster double pack warms my heart. The fact that there is new merch and even a recent Steam release is absolutely unreal to me.
I'm so glad that it's now accessible for more to experience it too! Missed out on it as I never had a Game Cube back in the day.

I haven't felt it. The handful of games I wanted that were digital only ended up with physical editions.
I buy digital games for fun, you should try as well. Watching my digital library (.pngs) is pretty good for the soul.

I really adore your collecting videos, it inspires me to pull the trigger on the physical editions i want. Responsibly, of course! I tend to debate with myself too hard, like with the Pentiment Limited Run edition, and I ended up missing it :((((

Excited to hear 7 remake/rebirth opinions - they are beautiful games, I’m currently playing through rebirth and restarting final fantasy XIV journey again for a long term jrpg.

I was basically frozen with my finger over the buy button on the Metaphor collector's edition... But I decided not to, and the main reason is that I'm just literally out of room. 😂 I think for me it's going to be just Trails and Xeno collectors editions going forward. But I'll be really curious to see the Metaphor set when you get it!
One of my worries regarding Metaphor is that Atlus will release a more complete version within the year 🫠
Yay! You’re back! 😊 this video was perfectly timed. I’m just finishing up a long retro jrpg kick and haven’t played anything recent in a few months. Gnoshia (love that art style) and Root Double look right up my alley. Also, man do I regret not hopping on that preorder for P3P and P4G 😭 I played P4G on the Vita and it’s an all-timer for sure.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it! I've heard some mixed things about the combat style so I'm looking forward to seeing how I take to it.
I think they nailed the aesthetics and music but were lacking in the story and characters. combat was fun but just had limited options you could do. if they do a sequel they would do well in hiring better writers and just tinkering with the battle mechanics a bit more. its a good first attempt, ill give them that. i just think it was a bit overhyped.
The out of focus hurts my eyes but happy you have a new video Emily!

i wish i had the passion to buy these newer titles. from me, i have been buying less and less as the years go by, mainly because of how games are made now. sometimes we don't even get the whole game on a disc or on a card (nintendo, im looking at you!). also, games get updated on a weekly or monthly bases. If i do buy, its mainly playstation titles. i mainly get nintendo games digitally.
Neat video, maybe I'll make a response video as I've been keeping track of my spending too.
Those Idea Factory collectors editions look so well done! I haven't collected any retro games this year, definitely been focused on the Switch before some of those games get harder to find/more expensive. I would say for hidden gem my favorite pickup this year has been Gerda: A Flame in Winter - I'm not super huge on VNs but that one is my new favorite.

Nice pickups and thanks for your results so far. My pre-order of Tsukihime was delayed of course (sometime after the 4th). I kind of regret not preordering Metaphor, but I was in a no buy situation then (kind of still am at the moment). My biggest retro pick up was earlier in the year and is Shadow Hearts for the PS2 in really good condition (now I have all three that I don't have time for, lol)
I pre-ordered Tsukihime as well. Super stoked for it and the wait is almost over. Witch on the Holy Night was absolutely incredible so I have high hopes.
I really loved Witch on the Holy Night too - I hear Tsukihime is even better!

It's really great to see you make another video Emily😊. That some amazing collector's editions that you have. Very awesome stuff. Yea it kind is annoying that LRG is getting a lot of stuff to be honest. Lollipop chainsaw repop, beyond good & evil and more. But I'm ordering them. The wait is what sucks. But im glad the physical copies are happening.
Yeah, I prefer to have physical than no physicals. Just wish the buying windows weren't so restricted for all of these.
Some really solid pickups! I don't think you'll have any regrets setting up the Final Fantasy VII section on your shelf after you play Remake/Rebirth 🙂 Both are fantastic in their own unique ways, and it's so nice to see the extra depth and character growth you experience that wasn't as possible in the original game. Nice pickups. I also just got Trails 1 recently. Have never played any of them but love the Ys games so I figured it's time.
Gotta say though being a PC guy all those beautiful physical copies make me a little jelly. lol
If you love Ys I'm sure there'll be something to enjoy about Trails for you! And you may want to check out Tokyo Xanadu as well :)

Year so far: bought 4 (3 digital, and Sea of Stars physical for the Switch which I am halfway through and loving every minute), received 5 physical games as gifts. Beaten 2 games. Need to speed up to try and even up games in and games removed from the backlog.

I’m trying to resist buying all the SMT games on 3DS but they’d look so beautiful on my shelf. I don’t think I can hold out much longer but it’s gonna hurt my wallet. I keep track of my purchases in Excel too we are definitely kindred spirits.
The SMT 3DS games are pretty great! Really love the Devil Survivor games in particular.
I feel you… I have an eBay alert for them but will require a pay rise before I can go for them!

I completely agree with you and I’ve been slowing down my buying this year too and curving fomo. Another possible option for you for limited run games is there retail store in NC, it has all there releases in store for example both the persona games are there right know for the same price as they preordered online for and they often show up to the store before very many people have received there order. So me personally I don’t preorder I just wait till they get to the store and get them then for the same price as preorder and I don’t have to spend the money until the day I get them. Only thing that’s sometimes hard is certain collectors editions like the Jedi survivor collectors edition they didn’t get in the store except for people that preordered in store. But all there regular releases show up in the store :)
I live in California, so unfortunately the NC store is a bit too far away for me.
I got Sea of Stars from Playasia and for the $40, I got the game with a nice box that included the soundtrack, an art card, and a sticker.

Kicking myself for not getting that deluxe ff7 when it was time, good call on that. Catching up on missed zeldas has been the highlight of this year. Into Persona 5 now really enjoying it, will probably have to get 3 and 4 as well. My time has been limited with work unfortunately.

I'll likely wait until next year for the DQ remakes and new Zelda. Though if they come out with a similar Dreamers edition for Zelda like they did for the Link's Awakening remake I may have to preorder 😅

The majority of my purchases have been digital but I have recently bought physical editions of Astral Chain, Fire Emblem Engage, Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth and Trails into Daybreak (which should be here very soon!). I hope all is going well with your new job!

I definitely get the frustration with limited run, especially for the bigger publisher games.
I live 10 minutes from the retail shop so it hasn’t hit me super hard. But I did notice when I picked up Rocket Knight last week for switch, none on the shelf and only could grab if preordered. I wonder if it will make it to the regular shelf to just buy… but also the preorder commitment in store is only 5 bucks so I basically just preorder everything these days lol.

One thing I try to do is 25 games per platform to limit myself. It also helps make sure I'll actually play the games I have.

For me if the Switch 2, which I hope is called the Super Switch. If it wasn't backwards compatible, I would eventually get it just not right way because I have plenty of games to play on the OG switch. BTW glad to see you are back from your hiatus!

The wait truly has been so long! I've watched some unboxings of the other platform versions for BG3 and the deluxe edition looks really nice 🥲
@@orbalology I agree! I think it's going to be worth the wait. Most of my friends have been playing since release and it's become somewhat of a joke that when they start talking about it I'll say "I think it's shipping soon..." But I really do believe its just around the corner now.

This year I've bought LAD:Infinite Wealth, FF7 Rebirth, Dragon's Dogma 2, ER: Shadow of the Erdtree, Stranger of Paradise:FF Origin, and the FF1-6 Pixel Remasters. Only FF7 Rebirth was physical, the deluxe edition with the mini soundtrack and art book. That's a little more than I usually buy in a year, because the first four were highly anticipated by me, though the last half of the year doesn't have quite as much I'm looking forward to (so far).
Yeah so far for me I just have Metaphor & Ys X on my radar for the second half of the year (hopefully that'll be all I give in to for new releases 😂)

My biggest pickups have been DRAGON FORCE and SNATCHER. CODE OF THE PRINCESS is also a recent pickup. I’m really enjoying this one.
I’m currently eyeing BEYOND GOOD & EVIL, and a classics collection of METAROTS. 3DS or SWITCH? Hmm.
I'll likely be picking up Beyond good & evil, just wish I didn't have to go through LRG's limited time window next month to secure it.
Have you ever thought about having proxies in different countries? I hear about these "diffucult to find" games ALL THE TIME. Then I walk into my local and see it sitting on the shelf. LOL... Meh, probably not worth the hassle.
I'd love NBA JAM for the PS3 but it's no where to be found here.
@@koobsmooth I use Japanese proxies all the time, however other country proxies are a little less accessible.
I'm here watching this video wondering why it's a big deal that you've bought this many games this year...completely forgetting that somehow it's already almost July!

I bought FF7 Rebirth Deluxe Edition, pre-ordered ReFantazio, and spent some cash at a recent retro gaming convention, buying Persona 4 Dancing All Night: Disco Edition, and a few other smaller games.
However, I've spent over $700 this year on very obscure gaming hardware stuff, including a Doctor V64 and a Super Wild Card DX.
It's fun to splurge on obscure items, so I don't blame you in the least!

Initially it was an Amazon exclusive and then GameStop went ahead and reprinted them and sold them preowned. I’m sure there are Reddit posts about that. That’s how I picked mine up. it came opened but in pristine condition.
It's unfortunate 'Hakuoki: Chronicles of Wind and Blossom' is one of those novel styled games. I often take pride and reassure myself of having good taste in anime when I see series I've watched already become available on large streaming platforms for the masses, or receive video game iterations. Nice to see you back Emily, and good to know your not only buying the premium stuff (like Rebirth & Baldur's Gate 3) but using your wallet to vote for somewhat decent stories. Also, although I don't care for discs, I can see the investment in a collectors PS5 'Metaphor: ReFantazio' compared to a Switch 'Persona' title knowing that there is no official seal of quality on the cart sticker these days...

I was wondering if you record your own game footage to use in your videos, and what equipment you use if so?
I feel your new job, whatever and wherever it may be, will be the biggest influence on the next six months. If you have to move to a smaller space, then less room. If you are lucky enough to move to a larger space, then more opportunities. Regardless of what kind of job you get, there will be some transition time where you won't have as much time to play or shop for new games.
When you go retro games, would you tell us what ones you are having difficulty finding? You may be lucky enough that one of us has the game(s) you are looking for and is willing to sell it.
I dont think she wants to give her address out to her viewers for safety reasons because she doesnt have a p.o. box.

I love your pick ups. Very cool. Mostly I like the spreadsheet you showed on how much you spent on your video games. Also the fact you really go into detail & explain things very well.
So what's up with me? Yeah I quit buying Modern gaming. I quit because I found it to overwhelming. I had like 10+ games in my back log another 10 on my list, then it was a matter of me hardly playing them because it felt like a huge chore to beat games that are 30 hours on avg, with work that makes me mentally & physically exhausting I just said enough is enough & decided to quit Modern gaming.
I am just curious, you made a chart with your spending, how much do you want to spend this year on games?
I didn't really have a definitive threshold of how much I'm looking to spend. The goal was to be more selective so I can have more time to focus on them this year. And put off other titles I may be interested in next year (when hopefully they'll still be available and on sale).
Sorry to hear that modern gaming hasn't been meshing with your playing style. But the great thing about gaming is that we have a huge history of fantastic titles that we can tap into! So I hope you can discover some new favorites looking back at least.
hey Emily, with BG3 do you know if its up to date on disc? i have the japan release, but i know shortly after it came out the game had a massive overhaul.
The physical editions through Larian Studios' website will be playable without additional downloads (unlike the Japanese version). I'm unsure whether it'll have all the up-to-date patches however.
