Full Renovation - Vintage Camper RV | Start to Finish - Part 1 (DIY Before & After)

- This video starts with the beginning of our journey renovating our 47-year-old retro RV. This vintage motorhome was in pretty bad shape when we bought it. Follow along as we transform this tiny home on wheels with a full DIY makeover from start to finish.
We grabbed clips from the full-length videos that we have released so far and added some additional commentary along the way. As an added bonus, we included a tiny bit of our camping trip up to Young State Park in Boyne City, MI.

As a former RV repairer I can tell you that you will hate having an all white interior. especially with children around it will be getting dirty all the time. That being said, I think you're doing a very descent job with your rebuild. Much better than most of the people I see try this!

I just purchased a 1978 Winnebago from my father. Still had plastic on the carpet on the inside!! I’ve been renovating and you guys keep me motivated!!

We are New Zealanders and bought an '89 Ford camper in California 10 years ago. At $4500 it was cheap but we love it! Next month we return for the 10th anniversary and she's still going strong. The rvs of this era are so well built and despite the gas consumption we are extremely happy

GREAT RENOVATION SHOULD DAVE USED PRESSURE. TREATED LUMBER FOR FRAMING
@@user-ht1xu4gv2u using pressure treated lumber on some thing that is not going to be exposed to the elements and will be sealed within a wall makes no sense at all, as well as releasing the chemicals into the air of a closed in space. Treated lumber would be the last thing I would ever use for framing.
Agreed, that's why we didn't go with it. Plus, it's so much heavier!
Treated lumber cannot be in contact with aluminum either as it will cause corrosion.
I just love my fellow Michigan peeps! We have a unique humour…

The smell! The rot! The old carpet! GROSS ME OUT! You guys are cracking me up with this video. :)
Less than two years ago we dragged an old (1967ish?) truck camper out of the woods near our home and went through the same processes as you. We brought it home on a small trailer pulled by our tractor. It underwent its transformation on the concert pad in front of our garage. We got it sometime in March and were not done til September. We took it out to a nearby rustic campground with a lake surrounded by fall foliage. It was a beautiful scene. Since then we have winter camped twice and taken it on two long trips totaling about 8000 miles. We already have plans to camp again this winter with it.
That level of gross-the smell from a multigenerational mouse nest-can not be captured on a camera but we think it was worth it and hope you have many good times using your retro RV.
P.S. We stayed at Young State Park for about a week in the fall one year and thought it was very nice. I want to go back when it is warm and enjoy Lake Charlevoix. Happy camping!

Hi not sure if it went through I would suggest flush king to clean out your black tank it really works. You can even use if you get a clog well worth the money.

Thanks, Randy! We might need some Holiday Rambler parts! We haven't really developed a plan for it yet but are hoping to tackle the exterior before winter. We'll definitely message you when we know what we need. Right now, the only thing we know for sure is a fender skirt on one side (tandem).

That's amazing! We stopped there on the way back from Yellowstone a couple years ago. My uncle used to travel that expressway from Michigan when he was doing some building in New Mexico and he used to order the Rocky Mountain Oysters for his workers without telling them what they were, lol. So, naturally, when we went, we all had to try the oysters. It's a cool place :-) Thanks for the comment!

we had to pull our refrig out through the emergency window! i had forgotten about the propane tank, noooo, i think we might take ours out too. everything has to be redone and certified now, such a pain.
Oh man, I don't even think we have an emergency window in this RV! Sorry you struggled getting your refrigerator out too but thanks for sharing! Yeah, one reason we decided not to go with propane on this one was that we didn't want to hassle with dealing with recertifying the tank... we also weren't sure about the condition of all of the lines and don't really plan to go many places that we wouldn't have shore power or be able to use our generator. Hopefully we don't regret our decision. Good luck with your project!

I have to admit that I had my daults about it at the beginning especially the nasty bathroom but you guys did a great job. I recently got an 81 Dodge Transvan with a 360 engine. I started it to show my brother how well it runs. About twenty seconds in, it just quit. Trying to restart it , it would turn over but pop every so often. It’s the timing chain. I’m told that around 80 to 90 k miles they’re pretty weak and my van has almost 90k. Just something I thought you might want to know to save yourself from being stranded in the middle of nowhere. Otherwise, I like your camper and hope all goes well with it........

For some strange reason I've got "Let's Clean Up The Ghetto" running around in my head. Despite being a great song with a great intro by Lou Rawls, (Here in the UK, Loo Rolls is an apt choice for that song anyway!) it does tend to grate after a while. And the only way to get rid of an earworm is to replace it with another. Unfortunately my immediate "go to" is Baby Shark , until i can think of a better one. Congratulations, now it's in your head - I've been Tom Tucker!

ASMR is a tingling sensation, generally on the back of your neck. Typically brought on by gentle auditory stimulation. So maybe if you particularly like the sound from your pressure washer you vould call it ASMR.

I'm all about reliability 😁. I'm hoping a little tlc was all it needed.
@@retrorevivals I guarantee it will be fine a buddy of mine has a motorhome with the 440 and it is very reliable and has plenty of power for towing…he tows his Jeep and a Harley with it and it went over Donner’s Pass no problem…

So I've been looking at building a campervan so I think that's why your guys's channel was recommended to me. Love the video and you got yourself a new subscriber. Also the bathroom transformation was absolutely insane. You always have that one room that you renovate that comes out the best and I got to say for you guys and that project gets the bathroom.

I just found you tonight! Our very first RV was a lot like this one, it had the kitchen in the back and the bathroom behind the driver. We took and drove it from Texas to Yellowstone, what a vacation! We entered the east gate and staying in Cody WY was great, the RV Park was right downtown. We saw it in 88, the year before the whole park burned. That's the only trip that RV made for us though. I'm excited to follow you and see what you do with this one!
We took the family to Yellowstone two years ago and it was an amazing trip. We'd love to go back! We stayed on the west side but made a stop in Cody, WY also... loved the rodeo and the dam there. We're hoping to be able to take Harvey out west someday.
@@retrorevivals you will love out west. We went in 2017 and saw all the national parks we could because we had a senior card and got in free. It was a wonderful trip, we went all the way to Glacier National Park, just amazing!

Excellent video! You have yourselves a new subscriber. I have just bought a really nice 1979 Dodge CB300 Sportsman 440 big block with a Delta RV body. I'm replacing the camshaft and lifters this week as it was only running on 7 cylinders. A previous owner dismantled it and rebuilt much of the woodwork. The interior is excellent and it's been dry stored for 20 years. It's been here in the UK since it was new and my wife and I plan to use it in the summer months on a few trips in England. It also has 16½" wheels which I would like to replace. Keep up the good work!
