Chris Rock was a cast member on SNL for three years. That's why he recovered so quickly from the slap, he's a live TV pro. Also, by slapping that comedian Will Smith just begged for every comic and SNL writer to clown him for the rest of his career. If he didn't like that joke, he's in for a lot, lot worse.

I wandered the very same thing--why did Chris Rock lean towards Will? Clearly, Chris didn't anticipate a violent, physical and verbal attack. He may have even suspected Will was activated as an extra by producers and he opted to play along. His response was priceless.

I’m glad they did this segment. I feel like it reinforces the fact that comedians still matter

They took it as a major affront to the right of the comedian to heckle, satirise and roast people for comedic value.

I absolutely knew there was going to be Will Smith jokes on Weekend Update and I'm absolutely here for it. "He wasn't going to but then Jada gave him this look".
I've heard it rumoured Will Smith has a small penis. There is this interview Will Smith and Maggot Robbie talking to BBC radio 1, ironically, and Robbie makes a joke she expected his penis to be bigger and was saying it was small. On it's own it doesn't mean much, but with context this was when they were having a fling during the filming of the first Suicide Squad. And if a white woman you have clearly had sex with says you have a small penis, then you really do have a small penis.

Thing is, Jada DID give him that look. Go back and watch the video. Will, along with those seated around him and Jada, was laughing and enjoying it. But Jada...yikes. If Miss Jada wanted some of Chris Rock for that joke, she should have gone after him her own self. Smith was absolutely cool with laughing it off, and she should have been, too, especially because her Oscar look actually looked great on her. She should have stood up, thrust out her hip, licked her finger and touched her hip while letting out a "sssssssssss!" sound (a la Madonna) and sat herself back down, and everybody could have gone home happy.

Chris knew though, because he literally did an entire documentary on the importance of black women’s hair, and has been picking at Will & Jada for years now. While Will’s behavior was extremely rash and unwise, Chris Rock is not innocent. There was malice there and intent to hurt.
I'm so glad they said this. For all we know (and for all Will Smith knew, unless he knew something we don't), Chris Rock wasn't aware that Jada Pinkett-Smith has a medical condition that causes patchy baldness as one effect, and he wasn't making a malicious joke, just a mild one poking fun at her having an unusually shaven head. There's no reason to just assume he knew.
She rolled her eyes because Chris is ALWAYS making slick remarks about her. This is more than just that one joke I assure you.

Well done team. I had the slightest bit of trepidation wondering how this was going to be handled. I have no idea why. The writers and staff did what they do and crushed it. SO good. And while I genuinely laughed throughout, Michael's "Uh-oh" nearly woke the girlfriend and the neighbors.
I love that my learning disability, NLD, finally got some representation in the media via Chris Rock!
