After watching this episode it makes more sense why Reiner, Annie, and Bertolt took an interest in Eren back when they were cadets. They weren’t masterminding the entire scenario, they were kids trying whatever they thought could give them a chance to complete their mission and go home. When they found out Eren was from Shiganshina, Bertolt took pity on him because he ruined his life, so he helped him with the ODM gear (before anyone knew his equipment was sabotaged by Shadis). Annie respected his desire to go against the system he was forced into, which she wanted to escape from, so she taught him some of her fighting style. Reiner saw a version of his past self and tried to build him up the way he had wanted someone to do for him back then. So while they made plans to capture the Founding Titan they befriended him instead by accident, and the moment they saw him emerge from his Titan form in Trost they realized they were helping the person who hated them the most become a more powerful enemy to them
Not just that. Reiner wanted to destroy all the Titans just like Eren. They really thought Eren was one of them. Maybe. Remember they didn't want Eren to get eaten by a pure Titan in the beginning. Reiner, Bert and Annie were making sure Eren didn't get eaten in Episode 7. They talked about how that mysterious Titan could be a powerful ally. They didn't mean for the people on the Island.
Reiner went from a side character to the second protagonist of the story. This is the episode that solidified him as my second favorite character. Also I love the fact that he's half Eldian and half Marleyan, makes the split identity of his much more compelling.
Kenny is friends with Uri aka the previous founding titan and knows who the real Royal family and everything. Showing how close Annie was to figure out the founding titan
Yeah, and by following people like Kenny who are connected to royal family, Annie (who Reiner said in this episode was entrusted with spying and gathering information) most likely figured out that Historia was important person connected to the church of the walls and Reiss and might know about the founding titan.
Commenting to this post because I hope they see my comment, but Honorary Marlaeyns are inspired by Hitler’s Honorary Aryans. In his later years, with all the drugs he was taking probably affecting his mind, Hitler started to see some other races as exceptional to their region. Like Japanese, awarded the status of honorary aryans
The warrior trio all dealt with their trauma differently Reiner dissociated and his brain created a different personality to forget all he's done. Annie kept herself distant from everyone to avoid the pain she will get if she became close with everyone. And Bert was just stuck in the middle..unable to make a decision
A popular theory of Bert's sleeping position is that it represents the 'hanged man'. At training, the upside-down form (reversed) represents delays, resistance, stalling, indecision.
And outside of Tarot (which I know almost nothing about) it was ALSO an old Italian torture punishment specifically reserved for one crime: treason. I think both of these are true and deliberate.
@@maddevsaveua9975 Where'd you hear that? The military sleeping method that gets spread around by media outlets is a mental checklist plus controlled breathing, but exhaustion and/or pills is the more common reality. Bert's position is an obvious reference to the hanged man tarot card.
To see how little they were during the invasion of Marley..makes you see the whole first episode differently..like imagine seeing the first episode, with the colossal and armored only to realize..those tiny children were in it
Yer in their first appearance in the first season the audience is presented with these external threats that apear to have a plan when in reality they were just winging it the entire time reacting to what everyone else does and going from there.
Before the Armored Titan reveal, Reiner even says "We were kids", but I feel like most people, myself included, didn't actually understand just how young they were.
kenny was the personal guard of the king, so this means that Annie was deep into the royal capital to find where the founder titan was. And yes, as you said she made up the whole father thing to mislead kenny
Its not true, Eren was 4-th by the training cadets results after Mikasa Rainer Bert and Annie who was trained years before and had supernatural abilities
@@dimalyubchenko2918 Because Reiner and Annie became friends with Eren and helped him improve his skills + keep him determined over the years of training. Reiner on the other hand often had to relied solely on himself during his "warrior candidate days". I'm not saying that the warriors didn't created friendships among themselves or care for each other, they definitely did, but they were put on a system where they had to compete against each other for the chance to inherit one of the 9 titans (So you would hardly see them helping each other to improve their skills during this period that they are competing for a spot to become warriors and improve the living conditions of their families in Marley).
I always felt that Reiner and Eren in general were very similar. Everyone loves to say it's Gabi, but I very much disagree. Specially the more times I watch this.
it's funny the story the man was telling them at 9:23 was the same cover story reiner and bertholdt told eren in the barracks when they asked where they were when it happened
I've always thought of Reiner's suicidal impulses as ptsd, but the perspective of rebellion against Mare has been missing until now. I'm always impressed by something in their shrewd thinking.
I just think he doesn't care. Spite is often an excuse of why people do it I don't think it's ever a primary goal, he doesn't have long to live at this point and his life has been miserable, that's all he cares about until he realizes he cares about the kids. It's often the most selfish reason, "I'm miserable, I hate my life, everyone hates me, I betrayed all my friends, everyone who I thought was a friend isn't or dead, I'm going to end it, who cares where the titan ends up or who has to clean up. If the titan goes to some random person, so much the better." The whole episode is pretty much him thinking about what led him to where he is, not parsing out the reason why or consequences. There wasn't a scene that dropped a thought or implication that it was for spite so I don't necessarily think it would've been part of his thought process. The only consequence he thought of was that he felt he should be there for falco and gabi.
a thing i always loved from Annie is that she never seem to actually hate paradis eldians or go along with Marley, she saved Connie and pardoned Armin in S1, not because of her split personality or coping mechanism but because she wanted to, in S3 we know that she didnt wanted to kill Marco but Reiner pressed her and now the same but with attacking paradise Also, theres a thing that the anime didnt showed, we see how Annie is unconscious after the first attack and right before that we see how Reiner extrangulates her, which could lead to think that she passed out because of him, but in reality, she was tired because she had to lead the pure titans with her low-range scream (as Armin pointed out in S1) while transporting Reiner and Bert
Reiner is my favorite character since S2 E6. That turnaround on top of the wall wasn't just a visual spectacle, but it had such a strong emotional charge... For me, this guy could only have experienced hell to have done what he did.
An important part of the comic that wasn't shown in this episode is that Annie carried Reiner and Bertoldt to the wall. The original plan was for Marcel and Annie to take turns carrying the other three so that Reiner and Bertoldt would have the energy to destroy the gates. After Marcel is eaten, Annie has to carry them the whole way and passes out from exhaustion, only waking after Reiner and Bertoldt have brought her into the walls. It's a great scene where Reiner has to stop the other titans from getting Annie, showing him taking the leader role seriously. I really wish the whole scene was shown in the episode.
My favorite episode. I've always loved when a show or movie recontextualizes things we've seen before. That whole section leading up to Reiner's "To save humanity" is the most gutting and emotionally resonant part of AoT for me and one I think of often. It's easy enough to say that "every 'bad guy' thinks he's doing the right thing" but to really show WHY Reiner is who he is, why he believes the things he does, what produced the man who shocked and confused everyone in 2x6... We see he does have true convictions (of course informed by propaganda and brainwashing) but also self-loathing due to knowing he shouldn't have been chosen, guilt over Marcel's death, longing to show he belonged and deserved a happy family, and a childish (but understandable, if not universal) desire to be recognized as The Hero... i can think of few pieces of fiction that show "the human heart in conflict with itself" quite like this. And to paraphrase Faulkner, what else is art for, if not that?
It's a very sad situation😔''If people knew it would come to this, nobody would go to war. But most people are pushed by something, forced to march into hell. That 'something' wasn't their choice. Their situation or others made them do it. But people who push their own backs see a different kind of hell. They can see something beyond the hell. It might be hope. It may even be another hell. Only those who keep moving forward will ever know...'' Isayama is a genius🔥🔥
The Jaw Titan's form of Marcel's brother is interesting. Because it inherits the basic jaw titan ability, but also has armor on his head. That armor is coming from his own personality which was supposed to be the candidate of Armor Titan.
Fun tidbit @10:15 Bertholts sleeping position resembles the hanged man in tarot card reading which is intentional. It can symbolize sacrifice, treachery and guilt
seeing you unpack the episode at the end of it feels just right, you're weaving in and out this absolute masterpiece of media and i love every bit of it
Here it becomes clearer why Rainer and Berthold looked older than the others, they were two years older than the others. Annie didn't really show it, but I wondered why these two looked like teenagers in contrast to the other cadets
We do not recommend judging a character's age based on their appearance. This is because it can look very different depending on the drawing skill and style of the manga artist. To be honest, I think it's difficult to differentiate the characters' appearance in detail depending on the passage of time during the work. This is also why when time has progressed significantly in the story, the characters' hairstyles are changed to represent the passage of time. (Sorry for Google translation)
No one ever seems to mention how different it would have been for the scouts and everyone within the walls had Marcel not been eaten by Ymir. His jaw and strategy would have annihilated the scouts the first time they fought. MAYBE not Levi/Erwin and save a few others of the elite, but back in season one? Oh they were donezo.
8:31 the answer will shock you 😉 📺 9:30 14:36 like 4 times or so He talked to her after she saved Connie and she ignored him and walked away. During Trost she asked him what they'll do (and then pan and Marco is next to them) I need to watch Nicholas Light again, because despite not having many 1-on-1 conversations, he spoke up about their proximity so much it felt like they were _frequently_ hanging around as a trio. (Plus Marco part of the time.)
You guys are my favorite reactors. Love your insight too !! 🫡 Also yes the reason they use kids as warrior candidates is because they are so much easier to brainwash and control . The last thing the Marley brass wants is a warrior who doesn’t listen or has distain for them.
One thing you may have missed is tbe story the older guy with the brown beard had about the titan in their window was the same story bert and reiner gave to eren about how they survived the breach of Wall Maria in season 1.
Watching this again and listening to you guys made realized something too, back in S1 EP3 where Instructor Keith Shadis was shouting and doing initiation at everyone, he skipped people and it was not because they've seen titans. Eren and Mikasa was skipped because they both've killed the abductors. Reiner, Bert, and Annie because they were warriors who commits nationwide war crime, and Ymir was also skipped because of her dark past. Even Armin was not skipped eventhough he's from Shiganshina and saw how horrid the titans was. And the soldier who was watching the initiation was belwidered watching it and asked why the instructor skipped some people, meaning skipping people is not something that happens all the time, so they must've been through some shit or atleast killed someone.
@@vaarios Its more so that its a clue to the audience if they are paying attention because the other officers who are talking about Shadis outright say that he skips over the people who have seen the horrors of titans already, and the only people he skips over are Eren, Mikasa, Ymir, Reiner, Bertholdt and Annie. That doesn't mean he never spoke to those characters at all during the introduction ceremony, just that he didn't do it right then and there.
@@Qprah no I get that but I still think its an awkward decision to show one scene from the past where the only thing we certainly know is that he skipped them. Even if it is a hint, it would make more sense to bring this back and confirm this to be the reason he was skipped and maybe some other scene with Shadis outside of the introduction ceremony where he is claiming to save all humanity
@@vaarios I think its fine just because Shadis doesnt grill Reiner like he does all the others, he just asks him what he joined the cadets for. Reiner being able to give an answer that is truthful to his Warrior mission while still sounding perfectly in line with his Soldier persona shows the audience the sort of double life Reiner was forced to live. The other possibility is that that moment comes from a different point during the 3 years of cadet's training. That scene is reused in the OVA's a few times as a way to allow Shadis to announce training missions to the cadets, so in theory it may just be a part of a speech that is reminding them of why they joined and what they are working towards. I can see why its possible to feel like it undermines the previous scene, but until now I hadn't even considered it or seen or heard of anyone else that had brought it up. I suppose that's why I don't think it is a bad decision. I dont think you are wrong though, you are making a very fair point.
@@Qprah I agree with you as well and I can totally see that being the case. Its been a long while since I had a nice discussion like this with someone from the AoT community otherwise mostly it devolves into "No mY StORy Is pErFeCt". I think stuff like this does get brought up by some people in the community but they are quickly snubbed by the majority unfortunately. I really believe its a masterpiece of a story, its just that of course, like any other one out there, there are some hiccups, or inconsistencies that are bound to be there due to the length and nature of the show.
They werr made into Warriors as children since they only have 13 years to live, so presumably Marley wanted to take advantage of children who could me molded into perfectly loyal soldiers against Paradis who are also at their physical prime.
I think overall the Marley Arc was adapted amazingly, but this episode specifically is one that i feel one should read. This episode adapts chapter 94-97 and it skips A LOT of info i personally feel are integral to the story, most notably about Annie, which the show just skips over. I would recommend, even if you aren't planning on reading the entire manga, to just read chapter 94 through 97, they are fantastic
5:39 omg I never actually asked myself how Marley knew about the vow renouncing war, but now by watching your reaction I just realised they got the info from Grisha and the restorationists! He got tortured and revealed everything he knew, including that info from Dina's family. That's how Marley knew, and shortly after they decided to plan this whole operation of retaking the founding titan. This is WILD how detailed this story is written I only understood that just now
"Why didn't she tried to eat him?" GOOD FRICKING QUESTION SIS. YALL ARE SO SPOT ON. IF IM CONSCIOUS WHILE WATCHING THIS, I COULD'VE ALSO ANALYZE AND PREDICT STUFF but I was just a kid when I first watch the show so I kinda wish I can go back in time ughhh.
If you ever go back to watch the earlier seasons you’ll see Annie Reiner and Bert are actually almost always together and even have a few confusing lines together that would only make sense now, but you’ll also see that even then Annie’s distain for Reiner was very clear
it's first time see reaction on this episode with someone asking "why she didn't tried to eat him!!" when bertholdt and the titan who ate eren's mom met ... the final episode will be phenomenal to them
Watching this episode cleared one of the questions i had back then, "why was annie crying in her titan form after losing Eren?" This show is one of the very few where every detail matters because you never know what you're really looking at.
the 'marley arc' is so important to make the show's context completely different and i have not seen a single person begin to have conflicted sympathy for both sides. This show's core message is very simple and common: War and racism is detestable and always ALWAYS leads to more war and racism. It will become more apparent as you go
Generally, I really enjoy these reactions. I'm here for the one piece ride and I'm getting through the other series atm, but these reactions are really well done. Like us viewers get to actually watch the show as we can visually see it unlike other reactors 😂 plus your imput and note taking really are perfection and keep me looking forwards to a new video drop. So thank you.

8:31 the answer will shock you 😉 📺
9:30
14:36 like 4 times or so
He talked to her after she saved Connie and she ignored him and walked away.
During Trost she asked him what they'll do (and then pan and Marco is next to them)
I need to watch Nicholas Light again, because despite not having many 1-on-1 conversations, he spoke up about their proximity so much it felt like they were _frequently_ hanging around as a trio. (Plus Marco part of the time.)
You guys are my favorite reactors. Love your insight too !! 🫡
Also yes the reason they use kids as warrior candidates is because they are so much easier to brainwash and control .
The last thing the Marley brass wants is a warrior who doesn’t listen or has distain for them.
Not Haley once again casually making an observation that would spoil the ending of the show if we talked about it.
She's just that perceptive, and I'm glad that the animators and Isayama put in these little details for the keen-eyed viewer.
She is too good.
i feel like it's meant to be clearly noticed. i'm actually surprised why most people miss it.
Seriously it's my favorite react channel by far, they are so perspective and are very smart that's refreshing.
Sorry what was the observation? I didn't catch it.
"Why does he look like Eren?" "Why does he SOUND like Eren??" Love these two!
I can’t wait for “tateo, tou-san”, I got shivers already.
One thing you may have missed is tbe story the older guy with the brown beard had about the titan in their window was the same story bert and reiner gave to eren about how they survived the breach of Wall Maria in season 1.
we love you guys thx for posting! 😊
But that's the thing. There is a continuity error in this episode because here shadis does ask Reiner...
I really believe its a masterpiece of a story, its just that of course, like any other one out there, there are some hiccups, or inconsistencies that are bound to be there due to the length and nature of the show.
brooooooooooooooo...they gonna be amazing at the end...these too are amazing
Definitely one of my favorite episodes
The speech from this PTSD veteran is my favorite in the show after Erwin's charge. Shows the true reality of this cruel world .
the amount of forgiveness Reiner gets from viewers gives me hope in forgiving myself. wild how anime makes you feel.
The scene where Reiner says "Reiner is dead" is one of the saddest moments from the show 😞
5:39 omg I never actually asked myself how Marley knew about the vow renouncing war, but now by watching your reaction I just realised they got the info from Grisha and the restorationists! He got tortured and revealed everything he knew, including that info from Dina's family. That's how Marley knew, and shortly after they decided to plan this whole operation of retaking the founding titan.
This is WILD how detailed this story is written I only understood that just now
Bro they knew from Tybor family 😅
Yeah that was a heavy one. But you have to give props to the writing in this show, it's phenomenal!
There was a particular question asked by one of you that had me doing that side eye puppet meme look lol
Starting on this episode.. Eren is no longer the Protagonist.. he's the Antagonist ... Reiner is the new Protagonist
This episode solidified Reiner as my favorite character in AOT
It's been a while since I've been so excited to watch a reaction 😁 Absolutely love you girls 💖
KEEP MOVING FORWARD 🔥
I've always wondered why Dina Fritz didn't eat Berthold too
If you ever go back to watch the earlier seasons you’ll see Annie Reiner and Bert are actually almost always together and even have a few confusing lines together that would only make sense now, but you’ll also see that even then Annie’s distain for Reiner was very clear
Love how you got sus on the final scene, for a moment I thought you wouldn't wonder about him, I didn't at first but you girls never let me down.😉
it's first time see reaction on this episode with someone asking "why she didn't tried to eat him!!"
when bertholdt and the titan who ate eren's mom met ... the final episode will be phenomenal to them
8:30 Just hold onto that thought for the time being; clearly one of the best foreshadowing of Eren's 'control' over the series :-)
I'm amazed that you guys figured out it was Eren. I didn't know it was him until the 4th episode 😂
Reiner, the hero of humanity.
Im patiently waiting for your reaction 😭😭
You're in for a lot of surprises the next episodes buckle tight xD
The flat twist of AOT is so smooth the back story is so detail thats why aot is peak for me
the finales gonna be so good
Watching this episode cleared one of the questions i had back then, "why was annie crying in her titan form after losing Eren?"
This show is one of the very few where every detail matters because you never know what you're really looking at.
8:20 "Why didn't she try to eat him?"
😭😭😭
the 'marley arc' is so important to make the show's context completely different and i have not seen a single person begin to have conflicted sympathy for both sides. This show's core message is very simple and common: War and racism is detestable and always ALWAYS leads to more war and racism. It will become more apparent as you go
The next 4 episodes are literally insanity. Enjoy 😊
"why didn't she try to eat him?" nice catch
Reiner is my favorite character from out side of the wall. My top 5 will be eren mikasa levi armin and Reiner for sure. Absolute masterpiece
I keep moving forward till my enemy is destroyed
14:25
i really hope you guys do a rewatch reaction once you are done
K: "why does he look like eren?"
H: "WHY DOES HE SOUND LIKE EREN?!" i laughed out loud! that was great. so excited to see the next episode.
Reiner is a very well reconstructed character, maybe he is the second protagonist, I know you love him girls but I also love him 😅
Generally, I really enjoy these reactions.
