You're completely right though, dude wasn't straight up with details. I'd walk just from that. At the end of the day, you got a roadtrip with a couple buddies. Always worth it!
Your definitely right Mike
For sure!!
Next truck can u show how to check for head studs
Kyle Christensen you look at the bottom of the valve covers and you can see whether they are bolts or studs
At the end of the day you need to stop and say “ Do I need to talk myself into spending 20k?” be confident and walk. Cloth interior and, some extra paint to match. We wouldn’t give 8k for that truck in Texas.
I’d give him 8k all day for that truck you need to remember this isn’t a Gas engine
@@TruckMaster thanks for the reply. i do understand. But once the frame starts with rust its just a matter of time. If you start with a solid truck without the cheap mods you can end up with a nicer rig IMO for less money. Rusty bolts make life rough. I have been on both sides as the buyer and seller 100s of times. You made the right call. If a guy will be shady on a frame he will be shady on anything. Ill send you a truck from Texas and it will be what I tell you. Good bad or ugly.
Fishtrucks&dirt I’m from Canada, couple hours north of Toronto. Probably heading down to either Florida or Texas this summer to grab myself a nice duramax. Cheers
That's because the more north you go, the more expensive everything is haha been like that for years. My house in Texas would probably be 300k all day long but in MN it's 200K.
Fishtrucks&dirt neither in California, the state of Illinois is delicate and dumb asf when it comes to selling trucks and cars, they overprice stock pieces of shit just because they’re not rusted, smh😂
Glad you picked apart the truck , Real friend is gonna be honest & tell you how it is, in reality you helped him make the right decision . He’ll always thank you for it bro 💯👌🏼
Don't go to Illinois to buy a rust free truck.
James Larkin right lol, go to Florida for that😂 80% of trucks up north are rust fucked
Agreed!
Gavin Flan come to Saskatchewan shits brutal man 😢
@@keltonderkach9601 its the worse place to be xD
Southern Illinois isn’t too bad with rust. Just depends on where exactly.
The frame does not look bad from the video. My 06 lbz with 20k original miles went in with absolute zero rust for undercoating and it looks just like right after being undercoated.
That dude is nuts to want 20900 for that think. I’m in upstate ny and that price of shit would on my go for 12-13 here, and this is rust city here
ya 20k is way to high
Ny anything is not rust free
That truck is honestly really clean. If you see any truck around Illinois that clean people pay big money. That’s why people make money bringing southern trucks up north.
No offense, if you want to buy a clean truck go down south if you’re gonna drive far.
Gabe Kekis I hear up north like the Dakotas Nebraska ect...they only use sand from what I hear
Have to watch for flooded vehicles heading south. They try to sell alot of them up north.
Lol no offense, but down south is not where you go. Fuckin sand and saltwater lol anywhere with sand or snow is no good
We have seriously rust free trucks here. Alabama FTW
Dunner 812 yeah in NY where I live we use salt which vehicles rot after 5 years of being up here sadly but I wouldn’t doubt it.
Why would you pay 20k for a older dmax with almost 200k miles that only has rims and exhaust. Worth only like 13k

Used car seller's hate the most is a knowledgeable guy looking a vehicle over .
Did the same thing brother, a flew 1200miles to Denver , truck deal blew up, wasnt what I was told by a long shot, flew back minus two plane tickets and rental cars from my account...........rock on brother.
Oh no
Your buddy is lucky to have You along to have a second pair of eyes and Your knowledge.
That’s a ridiculous price for a truck that’s not even leather interior, and that’s sketchy
I prefer cloth. But definitely sketchy
20k for this garbage??????😂😂😂😂😂
Duramaxs are overpriced youll buy one thats already too expensive and then end up putting thousands in the motor, cummins or 7.3 is the way to go
@@ryanrussell3893 👍👍 thats True !!!!
@@ryanrussell3893 I've never met a dmax owner that had to put thousands into the motor. The only problem Ive ever had with mine was a collapsed fuel line
I think you did the right thing. Once someone says Rust Free and you see it has been painted over, the seller was trying to pull one on you guys. Your friend should be happy he didn't fall for the tug on his heart for the vehicle! You always have to have another another set of Eyes and a Brain when looking at this stuff. Good Video.
Thanks mike
Id pass. Too many little issues for the price. Drive south some more
jclark They got RUclips $$$ they ain’t worried
Good call NEVER let emotions get to you as the potential owner. Just because it looks good on the outside doesn't mean it's good internally beautiful truck though no doubt.
Just as a heads up because I learned it from it happening to me, if the ABS light was on and it would not go into 4 x 4 one thing is could be is, if he replaced the front wheel hubs he probably was given dully hubs and the parts store, and there is really no way to tell unless you have the guy at the counter pull up the product details and read for SRW single rear wheel. Had to have the front end taken apart and done 3 time before we figured that out.
Good luck finding rust free in Michigan and Illinois. I've got an 06 crew cab and you could stick your fingers through the rockers and bed by the time the truck was 5 years old.
Come to Texas see what you’ll find for 20k 🤔
I live in Michigan and coming down there in 2021 and buying a truck down there.
@@garywarmanen3987 Check Nevada or Arizona, the desert keeps them new.

Got a rust free 2005 Powerstroke in 2016 for $5000 close to same mileage in Texas... getting a Duramax should by new... started with Chevy then Honda then dodge then ford no shits given about brand a work truck is a work truck
damn i wish i had a friend like you to help me when i go buy a truck and pick everything apart like you did in this video.
Just a heads up, when traveling far, ask the seller to make a video of the truck and send it to you. Ask them to show specific things in the video. It saves a lot of time for everyone. I sell vehicles here and there and make videos all the time to save time.
Huge red flag when the dude isn’t at the location that you’re supposed to meet.
Mitch Bakken how come
Glad to see a friend strewing a friend an honest opinion !
I feel like a lot of the commenters don’t really know what these trucks go for, those older duramaxes don’t really lose their value
My exact thoughts.
Chiefaj 47 I’m not a truck guy so wouldn’t know but in my common eyes $20k for a truck with 178k mikes with rust and issues seems like a fucking lot
Exactly the damn wheels and tires are at least 8 grand
Stanced Dreamz those are normal miles here in Texas
Crystal Ellis 1k a tire 1k each rim depends on the brand but that’s just truck rim and tire prices in general
Haha. A GM without an oil leak. And no rust. Non-existent!
David Moore mine is rust free and not leaking anything. I also live in the Southwest, where we rarely get moisture.
Better then a ford
Your completely right on what your saying truck master good thing he walked and you helped him out that's a true real friend😎
Great flick! I really appreciate your honesty and taking time out of your life to help your friends. Not many like you left in this country. Keep doing what you do. Still driving my 02 crew cab 4X4 LT lb7 that I bought new, it has a whopping 85K on the odometer, the only mods are a cat filter, bug deflector and long side steps almost bone stock. Yea I’m an old fart! It has been the most dependable truck I’ve ever owned. Texas all it’s life no rust!
I love your LBZ videos. i got a 120k. LBZ I've had for 7 years and i smile every time i hear it crank up !!!
I want you as my wingman when I buy a truck. You brought up a lot of things I didn't even know about
unless he had pictures of the frame before and during the painting of it,you would never know what's hiding behind all that spray,it was smart to walk away from that truck!
Actually the pictures fooled us
You could see in the video inside the c channel it’s was orange. I’ve looked 10 vehicles a day that were supposedly rust and leak free and walked on all of them. Trying to hide and mislead ends up with me telling them to get screwed.
I know this is an old video but if people are looking to buy a truck don't rush. I went through this with my first diesel. It looks like a good deal at first to save a few grand vs a clean truck. But take my word for it, it cost a lot more to fix rust, frame etc. than to just pay a few grand extra for a clean southern truck.
Glad he walked away from it. Cool to see what you look for. Hopefully you do the same inspection on the truck you guys end up buying.
I will be more thorough next time 👍
For that price, DAMN GOOD WALK! Good of you Josh, to be honest with your buddy. Me, I wouldn't have gave more than 16k, tops. I would have walked at 18k asking price. With that mileage, a 4×4 that isn't activating, fresh paint on the rusty frame "and" rough rockers......that guy is way way over his ski's with that price.
Again, Josh, I applaud your honesty with your friend, I'm the guy that my friends and family ask to be in on a vehicle and/or motorcycle deal so, I getcha brother! Good luck, the search goes on.
A lender probably wouldn't go above 18k tops, I'd be willing to bet, judging from the deal I got last year on my LBZ with half that mileage. I knew beforehand, exactly what my lender was willing to go up to on a loan for my '06 with 150k on the odometer. Got mine for less than the limit, btw. 😎
Thanks 👍

14-year-old truck for 20k I wouldn't off drove down there!
James McGuire you won’t find a clean good lbz for less. I just bought and 06 dually for 20,900 with 130k but it was all stock looks wise. Only thing it has is a tow tune
Dakota Dickens I paid $8500 for my 2007 lbz crew cab short bed cloth interior 8 years ago. $5000 for my 2006. That one needed a bed tho. These prices are stupid af I tried to flip them for $16k no one pays that shit. I barely broke even on mine.
@@MrPland1992 people do pay that but they gotta be southern rust free because I can move them. I ain't talking your had paint repair cloth interior BS.
@@dakotadickens3747 big difference in a dually.
MrPland1992 the one I bought was a Texas truck. It also depends on where you are in the world to. Tennessee is almost truck central even people who done need them have them. If you find a truck under 150k that’s straight you’ll pay 18-20k all day everyday. Even if it’s under 200k you’ll pay 17-18k most of the time. Some places trucks are just cheaper.
i drove from indy to southwest IL to look at a truck, got there and the thing barely ran and was completely rusted out. wound up going to lunch and looked online for others. found one in Tennessee and after talking to the guy briefly over the phone, explained my situation then drove another 3 hours south. looked it over, was perfect with zero rust, paid cash on the spot and drove back home. around 22 hours on the road but worth it in the end.
I would have walked too. Said there was no rust and there is. Red flag right there. Trust just went out the window b
Been there before! Made a 3 hour trip to southern Ohio with a motorcycle trailer to look at a Harley. I checked it out and didn’t like things about it. I called a guy who had one 45 mins from my house that I’d already looked at and made a deal over the phone. Drove 3 hours back home with an empty trailer. 🤷🏻♂️ Burned gas I didn’t have to, but oh well...very happy with my bike.

That frame was fine. Stupid thing to point out
Do you not understand how bad it is to coat over rust?
Ryan Carpentier that frame can still be saved it’s far from junk. Pull the cab and clean it up they act like it’s about to break in half. All that was surface rust I worked at a salvage yard for years. That was a good frame
@@Dietiker01 I'm not saying it's total junk but you literally have no way of knowing if it's just light surface rust if its been coated, moisture gets stuck when you coat it and it can seriously increase the rate that rust will form.
Who would want to spend 20k on a truck and then have to remove the body and restore the frame
I have an 04 lly 😬 truly rust free, only 93,000 miles. All original besides a touchscreen and new speakers old were blown, still have old radio. It’s mint
Located in PA
Your a good friend man for lookin out for your boy.
You are the best person to take if someone were going to purchase a truck
Don't blame you for walking away for the price an the rust he waa hidding
Man I'm in Texas and walked away more than a handful of times on Texas trucks. I looked for over a year before I found the right one. People just don't take care of their stuff and don't know what clean truly is.
He tried 2 doctor up the frame and stuff before he put it up for sale he new what he had
I drove to colorado from northern wisconsin for my truck. It was a one owner old man truck; untouched. He had a service bible he kept in a composition notebook for EVERYTHING ever touched on the truck (i maintain the notebook to this day). It had 180,000 miles from his yearly trip to the family campround with his small rv. Not a single leak anywhere. Anywhere. Not a bad bushing or bearing. The ONLY thing i had to replace when i bought this truck was some new headlights as his had fogged.
You could not have found a better truck than mine. I would NEVER have paid $20k for it. Only a moron would.
I paid $12k and 3 beers each at the bar next to the lot we met at. I still talk to the dude and show him the progress on HIS truck (itll always be his, even if im the inheritee of this beautiful rig).
He doesn't necessarily agree with all of my mods, but he loves that someone who loves and respects the truck has it. He kbows i will baby it just as good as he did. He knows i wish to drive it till i die of old age and pass it on.
If you really bought this truck, especially for $20,000, you're an idiot.
When folks cover up stuff big red flag. I’m subscribing I need knowledge to pick apart trucks before I buy I’m waiting a year to get one so I wanna know what to look for
when you go buy a used vehicle and you have any DOUBTS>>>>>> RUN.. thats what i always tell people.. you will be pulling out the money with a little grin when you know its the right deal
Im curious why rust on the frame is an issue? especially if he coated it because you dont know if he took the right steps to coat it.
Andrew Holland it wasn’t you can see the bumps in it etc because usually it’s sanded down and looks smooth, this one looked like rattle can
And a coated frame over rust is going to cause it to rust worse. Now you're trapping moisture and it can't dry out. Coating a brand new, clean frame is one thing.
Helps when you got a very smart guy that's knowledgeable of vehicles. I always have a buddy with me to check out vehicles before. Love the video.
best deal was to walk away, good move right there
Thanks
Dude I feel this 100%. My duramax that I currently own, I really should have passed on and found something else. But the owner and the dealership it was on consignment with both kinda scammed me. Firstly, I paid wayyyyyyy too much money for it. He was asking 25,000 I got him down to 21,500. LLY with 140,000 miles. When I test drove it, I got up underneath it and checked, and she was spotless. There was a tiny bit of surface rust and the usual dirt and dust everywhere. I didn't really care that it had been offroaded some, and it did have a bulldog tuner on it and I was nervous when the owner told me he usually ran the highest tune. But it was fully stock otherwise. The big red flag I should have seen was that it was parked on the grass. I assumed it was because it was a huge truck that was parked at a small dealership and it was for looks. I found out not too much later that in reality, she was leaking oil from the turbo drain. Then when the shop went to fix it, they told me that it was an aftermarket, larger turbo. And that the installer used silicone instead of a true seal when replacing the turbo. There was also a huge chunk missing out of the backplate of the engine. Then right after that, a piston in the engine shattered and destroyed the whole block, so I did a full engine replacement. All in all, I've spent somewhere around $40,000 on this truck including the price of the truck. I love it to death, ill never trade it. But I should have passed and found a better deal and been more aware of what I was buying.
Wow, what a money pit! Do you still have it and if so, how’s it doing now?
I have driven 6h to see a truck that had a good frame. I could put my hand threw the rust holes he sent photos of the good spots only. Very frustrating
Just bought Chevy with rust bubbles thru hood. Person trying State this truck her real good.
Soo we poked hole thru hood.
Owner: oh
Having never lived east of Colorado, rusty frames etc just isnt something I've ever worried about or had issues with & i own 9 trucks, 3 are duramax..
NEVER BUY A VEHICLE THAT HAS MODS ON IT. its always a toss up on quality so just avoid them.
Unless you really know your stuff, or know the vehicle/owner
I hate it when people tell you its rust free and its not..!! Most people's idea of rust free is no rust on the exterior of the body. Guess most people dont know that rust usually always starts from the back side..!! My truck is super clean, came from Arkansas..!!
I've mentioned this before, there's a lot of nice rust free trucks down here in Southern Alabama.
Yeah come on down south... we have red clay but a whole lot less rust issues.... just be weary of flood damage vehicles sadly. But get away from the harsh cold and snow and come on down south ya'all.
I’m headed your way!
While your at it come down to FL.
@Sean Thornhill lmfao. Funny shyte!
True, just picked myself up an 2005 LLY in Mobile Alabama with 135,000 miles zero rust for under $19k.
Early March, I bought a 2006 Ram 2500 with the Cummins. Really clean, smooth ride, was 200k (now 209k), and I gave $14,750.
I keep hearing them say “you’re getting a deal” bruuh that truck is no where near being worth 20k you all should really come down to texas lol

Ok dude the truck is like 15 years old with 200,000 miles! Its not going to be perfect.
This past December I picked up an 03 LB7 Sierra, 165k, it has an intake, MBRP downpipe and 5” exhaust, 6” pro comp lift, 20s with 37s, PPE tuned, fully loaded, and custom lights all around. FL truck (no rust) with zero mechanical problems. Guy wanted $15k originally and after a few months I got him down to $10,200. Nobody wants LB7s down here and I don’t know why. LB7s are awesome trucks if you treat them right. No way I’d pay that for that POS with all those problems, just because it’s an LBZ.
Question if the guy wanted 16k for the truck would you buy it at that price even with the flaws?
I personally wouldnt buy it. If he lies about little stuff then who knows what else is he lying about.

I woulda passed too, Abs was easy to fix, im sure the 4wd was likely the same...just a shift motor on a t case or something like that. When they just leave problems like that on the truck, that means they didn't even care to show it attention prior to a sale. ANd if they couldnt fix minor issues prior to sale, do you really think they took care of it when they were using it?
That truck has 170k HARD miles on it... I bet they were running the hottest tune they could for most of them. Diesels are tough, they can run "fine" even when they are very close to failure....half the time you wont even know until it screws up big time.

The frame it looks like surface rust ...
Here in illinois they can rust from the inside out from all the salt sitting in the frames. If you coat them its even worse because it plugs up the drain holes. People talk about a oil treatment that gets sprayed into the frame that is supposed to work well if you do it from the get go and repeat every so often.
The frame isn't terrible if that's rust converter, and not just undercoating. Assuming it was only surface rust though, I definitely wouldn't advertise it as rust free however. I'd pay $12k for it.
I would’ve offered him 12,000 because of the time you have to put in
Do u think he would of said yes???
I'm just curious, why is coating the frame a bad thing? I'm putting together my 2004.5 sierra that he left me when he passed and was considering getting the frame coated. I thought being in Ohio it would be a good idea to help protect it from the salt but what issues does it cause?
If it’s not rust free the rust will rot even if you cover it, it will be rotting underneath the coating
20K no way, no matter what the truck looked like.
How do you plan to find a duramax with no rust on the frame or anywhere with over 150k miles and being 10+ years old for $20k or less

Seems like I got a decent deal on an 08 Sierra 2500 for $9k with 310k with an ARE topper and newer LT265 tires. A few dents/scrapes and light hail damage on hood but it was a kinda southern truck and minimal rust on it.
The frame was probably coated with por and wasn’t completely covered
The Passenger he know his shit mad respect for you , I'll take you with me anytime to get a vehicle
Who the hell buys wheels and tires and has them installed Before you even look at the truck?? Who does that?
Jay K I just want to see the conversation with the guy wanting to get his wheels back haha. Liken ummmm no, click
So did Dakota get anything off of his lml? I’d be interested in most of the performance parts off of it... (if still in great shape) especially the screen he had for the tuner... your a damn true friend for helping Dakota out... it’s always better to walk if your not 1000% happy with it. I’d definitely want you to go with me if I was looking for another truck! GREAT CONTENT!!
