    This is definitely one of their signature songs to me, the light to dark dynamics are all used beautifully on this tune. Good reaction commentary, intelligent observations...my preferred album by Opeth is My Arm Your Hearse. You can’t go wrong with that one although it’s a little on the aggressive side of Opeth which I love.

    Opeth songs are so complex they need some listens to really understand what's happening. First time I listened to Deliverence I got disconnected from the song as you in that middle part so I guess is kinda normal... it was late at night and the ending got me back... When you see the drummer playing it live you realize how complex it's to do it right, way more than Harlequin Forest... This song is probably in my top 3 songs from their discography.
    I think you should listen to Face of Melinda next. It's part of a concept album, Still Life, to let you know if you'd like to hear it as a whole on your own.
    Give deliverence some more listens :). Thanks for the reaction

      @@captainmorgan1978 yeah I know although I consider Octavarium my favorite DT song and I have suggested it several times 😂 which is kinda funny. I'm a fan of DT too and I can understand that state of not showing the most complex works of any band as an introduction to a new listener. It happened with Nightwish reviews back when I watch them, I don't know if you know the band but people always suggest Ghost Love Score as the first song to hear and that song is one of their longest epic ones. I stopped watching those reactions long ago although Nightwish is a great band, I got tired of always the same pieces.
      Opeth is maybe more related with preferences between heavier or softer stuff. But all of their songs deserve at least a couple of listens, they don't usually do direct songs like As I Am, etc... They don't have either long epics songs (keeping in mind their songs are usually long)...
      I think you'll like Ghost of Perdition, it's from the same album that Harlequin Forest. Mid career Opeth.
      Face of Melinda is not a difficult song to digest either. It's from a concept album but it's not that long and mixes that jazzy feeling with heavier sound but does not have growls in it so it's good. The album as a whole it's different. But as long as you do the song itself it doesn't matter. Deliverence is part of a history relating Damnation (Windowpane) too... Those albums, Deliverence and Damnation are like opposite faces, Side A and Side B, Deliverence being probably the heaviest album by Opeth and Damnation the softest by that time, they had never sounded that way and Mikael was obsessed on writing that album. It's like from the rudeness of a growl to the tiny whisper of the wind blowing... So that's why Deliverence is that heavier...

    One of my fav bands! I think you and I have similar tastes though because you summed it up perfectly in the recap. They have a lot of songs where there are big chunks that kind of lose me. Thankfully, they usually make up for it somewhere else in the song. However, for me personally, that quality is why they have never crossed into that favorite band ever territory. Still in my top 5 though

    Opeth were influenced by bands from the 70s who made long intermezzos and repetitive parts much like the rave scene in the 80s and 90s. If you were on LSD, like most people who attended those concerts were, it seemed right for you. That's a part of music history that's illegal today, which is why we can't experience music the way our ancestors could. Opeth retains those psychedelic parts, and they may seem bland to some people.
    Also, the ending of Deliverance was made 3 years before Harlequin Forest and is much more technical. I feel you like Harlequin better because you heard it first. That reminds me of my friend, who rarely watched movies when they were released, he usually watched them a few years later. He'd seen A Beautiful Mind before Fight Club. I adore both movies, but he says he can't fully appreciate and enjoy Fight Club because it reminds him of A Beautiful Mind too much, in the sense that you realize (SPOILER) in both films some characters are imaginary. I feel this is what happened here. Also, everyone needs at least twenty listens to adequately digest a song, especially if it's Opeth.

    I know you responded to my last comment, but Imma recommend Jinjer again xD
    Very popular band to react to. Last time I recommended Outlander and Who is Gonna be the One, but forgot to mention Pisces, which is by far their most popular song to react to. It feels like there are 100+ reactions to that song on yt xD, but it's mostly because it packs a.. surprise.. I guess. Not their best song but very fun to react to. Usually people react to Pisces and get intrigued to discover more of their discography. I guess you could search for Jinjer reactions to see which ones are most popular, but my favorite is Outlander. Says the song needs to change tempo etc, getting monotonous. Enjoys the endings of Harlequin Forest & Deliverance, two of the most monotonous pieces of Opeths music. Not saying they're bad sections of music by any means, but it seems slightly hypocritical.

    • @captainmorgan1978
      @captainmorgan1978  5 лет назад +1

      Fair enough, I actually did say Deliverance ending was a little repetive and so was Harlequin Forest BUT the rhythm of HF was especially intricate which makes it less repetitive feel. And you know, repetition and tempo change are only 2 parts of many pieces to a song? 🤷‍♂️
      Also, there are different types of repetition...just like in Math there are sets of infinite. Between 1 and 2 there is infinite numbers. But also between 1.1 and 1.2 there is infinite numbers. In music you can repeat a chorus or you could repeat a phrase or a note... Etc if the phrase or section is more intricate as in HF it makes it feel less repetitious.
      Thanks for the comment. Cheers
