      I love Martin "Axe" Axenrot, and he brought a new interesting sound to Opeth, but Martin Lopez had a sort of "subtle grandiosity". His work on My Arms Your Hearse was absolutely brilliant, and it's my favorite album. It was sad that he left the band but with what he was dealing with at the time i completely understand, and i hope he is doing better these days (i am aware that his departure was like 10 yrs ago lol).

  • @LiamNoir
    @LiamNoir 4 года назад +51

    I defend the tone at the start by saying that it's meant to sound uncomfortable. It's to load up the unease from the start before bringing in some contrast. The opening riff has one of the guitars rapidly play a single note on 2 different strings, then slide up to the tritone on one of those strings, a classic 'evil' sounding interval. Same as the intro to 'One Winged Angel' from Final Fantasy VII, very evil, uncomfortable and ominous sound to set the scene for what's to come.

    • @barrettdc1
      @barrettdc1 3 года назад

      It's common for people who aren't musicians and especially guitarists to complain about "tone" when in this case it's dissonant chords. That generally can throw people off and they don't enjoy it. I'm a 20 year guitarist veteran and have play basically every amp and chord and I find even Opeth's dissonance to be pleasing to the ear. Some people don't. Not a big deal but when people say " the tone is bad" they just dont understand music.

    19:00 What Wolf said is what I find to be one of the best things about progressive music. Understanding the brilliance of something that might not have fully sinked in when you heard it for the first time. Generally it's more rewarding and longer lasting than the type of instant satisfaction you get from more straight up songs. There's a lot to unpack musically and that's why I tend to get way more out of progressive music. People often say you can't headbang to prog and I couldn't disagree more. In fact, you'll be headbanging in 4 directions instead of 2 once you get the hang of it! :D

If you want to understand Opeth - check out *Demon of the Fall* !!! Progressive music often builds disperate and seemingly off-sounding parts of a song in the beginning and meld them together into the end in a way that only at a second listening the earlier parts makes complete sense. When you see those mechanics it is almost exciting to hear crazy sounding parts in the beginning as you wonder how everything will tie together. It's like a good detective-story or something but in music form.

    Just passing through . . .
    I'm 56, I have seen many genres "invented" in my lifetime, lived through the Pop music of the 60's and 70's, and it was my Dad's love of "Rock" music, Santana and the Beatles that gave me a love for Guitar driven music, so I continued on listening to AOR FM radio throughout the late-70's and 80's. I eventually got into Progressive Rock in 1977 on (because of Kansas and "Point of Know Return"), and then Heavy Metal in 1979-80 and then many of the subgenres it split into, and continued collecting Lp's and CD's.
    *Opeth* I got late into, but knew of them by reading reviews in a long gone Metal Mag called "Ill Literature", and reading up on their debut "Orchid" and for 3 more albums. It was the album "Still Life"(in late 1999) that I finally checked them out . . . I never used these 2 words together till I heard them; "Brvtality and Beauty". How they were so damn aggressively heavy and could go into acoustic guitar passages so easily, and Mikael going from the deathly growls, and then this beautiful melodic voice. And the musicianship, flawless, as they knew how to put the extremes together, even with the abrupt tempo changes. Btw - gotta' give it up to their former drummer to; "Martin Lopez" adding a hint of his Latin roots (he later forms the band "Soen").
    I would suggest next; "Ghost of Perdition" because of the changes, and how Mikael also develops as a melodic singer, while maintaining the brutality. But this track "Deliverance", the ending riffage is iconic to us fans, it took me awhile to figure the tempo (on Guitar and to headbang :p), but it is a staple to _headbang_ and "air-guitar" to it live when they perform it (see it LIVE, go find it!). As you can tell, I love this band, which they and Meshuggah are in battle for my fave Metal bands.
    If you would like to discover Opeth more: ruclips.net/p/PL2DU3TBNutEeqDvzLr5kVFKBm7DxaJvBZ
    - Glad you got into it Wolf \m/.
    Btw - I'm a HUGE "King's X" fan :P.

    What we say to the singer, mighty Mikael Akerfeldt is sings like an angel, growls like a demon. Two souls came from heaven and hell, combined in Stockholm, Sweden in his body. Angel won the battle so he quit growling in last four albums (I'm ok with that)
    I'd wanna see you reacting some Pain of Salvation and seeing you both crying then myself crying.
    Let's start with "The Perfect Element", "Her Voices", "Beyond the Pale", "Iter Impius"

    Wolf, I must say Opeth has always been about dissonance and abstract cadence. The off sounding parts are intentional because they generally make the regular "musical" parts have much more impact. Once you get it you really get it but I can understand it is not easy if you haven't grown up with it. Honestly, try the Blackwater park album and you might experience a deeper level of understanding of what I'm crapping on about. Talk soon

    Steven Wilson has worked with Opeth - and that's my way of presenting a challenge to HalfLifeSister. See if she can watch the video of Wilson's song, "Routine" for more than 30 seconds. It HAS to be the video with the animation: ruclips.net/video/sh5mWzKlhQY/видео.html. My bet is that she won't be able to do it. The sadness factor is through the roof. I can barely make it through myself.

    Just clicked on one of your last vids to ask a question: Do you still read comments that come in on old vids you did? Yesterday I added a request on an older video. Later in bed I thought: well maybe they don't even read comments on old vids.... I'd love to see you guys react to Soilwork. 'Let this River flow' and 'This momentary Biss'. There's also a live performance of Soilwork doing 'Let this river Flow' together with FLOOR Jansen. YUp. And she even grunts in it. Not the best performance if you ask me, them together, but it was an experience.
