Opeth’s older albums are theme based. So for them making much out of the lyrics of individual songs is difficult. It’s more about the music. But for their newer albums, they are focusing on heaviness of the emotion and lyrics rather than the sound, so for newer tracks (Damnation onwards) lyrics are more important.

I mean, the "song as it is" is not a collection of texts deciphering its meaning so it can be more coherent as a composition. All the important aspects are sonically presented. And that is how you experience it. Sure digging up the lyrics can make you appreciate the song much more, but i think that is for subsequent listening, not the first. Its like playing a game with a walktrhough in your first playthrough.

Harlequin Forest and Deliverance have the best Opeth song outros. Absolute killer. No other songs come close, even from other bands. However, the song All Things Will Pass has the best Opeth album outro of all time and now join Harlequin Forest and Deliverence in top 3 Opeth outros. Dripping with heaviness in emotion. Very different kind of song, but I highly recommend it.

Definitely do more Opeth, I think Opeth - The Moor, Face of Melinda or A Fair Punishment would be great songs to react to. As for the lyric breakdowns, you don't have to do a deep dive into them during your first reaction, but once you've listened to the track a few times, I would definitely recommend looking into them

Lots of people asking for reactions to Watershed and earlier era Opeth. But I'd like to hear something from Pale Communon. River or Faith In Others preferably. I think a lot of fans who were initially turned off by the dramatic style change have come back to Pale Communion over the years and really started to vibe with it. They stopped using growls after Watershed, so that'll help you a lot.

  • @noisypinkbubble875

I do enjoy the lyric speculation, however I do think for most tracks on first listen it's best to just focus on the music. I think if a lyric stands out to you, there's no harm in mentioning it. But as a consistent part of your videos, I feel it can be cut out. Especially if you feel it's making more work for you overall, and detracting from the music itself. (Also lyrics are like poetry sometimes, and discussing poetry is another channel entirely lol).
Now for reactions I'd love to see:
    - Blackwater Park by Opeth (heavy growls, but once the track picks up, you'll be grooving so hard you won't even care)
    - Arriving Somewhere but not Here by Porcupine Tree
    - Passionflower by Jon Gomm (not metal, but when you see what he does with a guitar, you'll be shocked)
    - Deadhead (Live at Royal Albert Hall) by Devin Townsend
    - Exit Strategy of a Wrecking Ball by Diablo Swing Orchestra (new orleans swing + metal. It's great)

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest Continuum & All Things Will Pass. They're the final two songs on their recent album and a totally different style from what they used to make. They're beautiful tracks and feed into each other. If you want to experience a whole different style of Opeth, I'd highly recommend those two.

Blackwater park is one of the album i have seen some people mentioning but I believe it deserves much more attention for this channel. The album is produced by a member of porcupine tree which is one of my favorite bands, and who i know you also very much enjoy. It contains a hint of their sound and this album ends with the self titled track Blackwater park which is a very fitting ending that builds into a climax. It starts slow and builds with emotion and ending with the growls you seem indifferent about. It may help you understand and maybe enjoy the growls more than you currently do. Please give this track if not the whole album consideration, you will not regret it!

    *_Opeth - Still Life_*
It is a concept album, so the songs have a plot-line and one song's mood and tone progresses into the next song. Because of that, you would probably get the best and most authentic impression of the songs, if you listen through the entire album in one sitting. It would only be about 60 mins, and whether or not you decide to live stream it or keep it as single video, I'm guessing that you would save time by not having to edit it :)
