@@pennywiser9607 you'll need a special cable for that. It looks funky, three connections. Hi @GLBProductions, I recently acquired a Yamaha MG12UX mixer. When I connect my Roland TD25KV kit to it, I've noticed that the sound quality is lower when listening through the mixer's headphones port compared to the direct output from the drum module. I am using the same Bose headphones, btw.

Hello, thanks a lot for this excellent video ! I have the same for my drumset (4 dynamics micros & 2 overheads) and have somme questions : - 1) For the 2 Stereo Out, what is the best to use for an amplified speaker, XLR (balanced ) or Jack (TRS or TS ?) ? - 2) I also use this mixer to connect to a main mixer, what is the best connecting, XLR or Jack (TRS or TS ?) ? Do I have to use two Out or only one for connecting to the main mixer ? - 3) What is the difference between the 2 SEND (Aux 1 & Aux 2) & the 2 GROUP OUT ? Thanks again for your precious answer, musically, Emilio (France).
Hello Emilio! Some answers: 1. It depends on what the line input connectors on your powered speaker are - on some speakers the only line input available is a TRS connector. 2. Please watch my video on how to connect two analog mixers together - either connector can be used. 3. Aux sends can be pre- or post-fader, pre- or post-mute, and the amount of signal being sent can be varied independently of the fader position. Group outputs are always post-fader and post-mute, and the level of signal sent is always proportional the channel fader position. Aux sends are typically used for stage monitors or sending to external FX or recording units, groups are used more for managing groups of similar channels eg all your drum channels, all your vocals etc.
Hi, we had purchased MG12XU Mixer around 4 weeks back to be used for our online worship through Zoom. We currently use 1 line for Microphone (Shure SM48) and another line for keyboard. But no matter what we do the vocals volume is low and keyboard volume is high. Our current setting is Microphone gain is at 2:00 Clock, and the fader is at the peak. Keyboard gain is at 11:00 clock and fader is on 0. Any advise will highly support us in our online worship. Thanks
I tried raising the gain of the microphone and lowering the volume of the keyboard. But lowering the volume of the keyboard leads to non syncing of vocals and rhythm. Please give me your thought on what am doing wrong and what should be done. Thanks
It sounds like you need to set up a monitor system for the singer using aux 1 - that way you will be able to balance the vocal and keyboard for the zoom broadcast without affecting the singer's ability to hear the keys in the studio.
Hello. A question. If I set 3 mics to record my piano via usb to computer on a DAW, it will record the 3 mics on a chanel track of the DAW? Thank you. your videos are great.
Very informative Video m i would like to ask ,what is the maison difference between this model and the MG10XUF they look the same with the same design ,am wondering if getting the MG10XUF over the MG12XU is a good option , thank you
Good morning, thank you for making the very informative video. I'm not clear on one step, can the white fx/aux 2 knob manage both functions at the same time? Let me explain: if there are monitors connected to the aux2 output on stage and I operate the white knob, do I raise/lower the channel signal or increase/decrease the effect? I understood that I can only route the effect to the aux1 output. I hope I have explained myself clearly and thank you in advance for your reply.
Yes it can and does, but the mixer is not designed for aux 2 to be simultaneously a monitor send and an FX send: you're meant to use it either as a send to the internal FX or as a post-fade aux send, not both at the same time.
Thank you so much for your great tutorial! We have the 16 channel mixer and I am trying to figure out a way to give 5 band members their own in-ear monitors. Is there any cheap/easy way to do that, like splitting each of the aux signals to 2 people's monitors and then plugging the 5th person's into the monitor outs? I can't afford a fancy auxpander!
Hmm, these mixers are really not set up to work with IEMs - for a start none of the sends are stereo, and only two of them are pre-fader. And aux 4 is shared with the send for the internal effects. So the short answer is no, not really. Are you able to use a more conventional setup with monitor speakers?
Been watching your videos on/off the last several years! Once in a while I’ll come back and still doing a great job on explanations and instructions! Very detailed and complete 👍 Question - for live gigs is there a n external effect that can be added to give the vocals that warm smooth and clean sound? Or is the mixer enough? I was at a restaurant in Thailand recently and the house (full) band sounded so good! The mix sounded amazing and the vocal was so clean, warm and smooth! Almost like a separate vocal processor was used- like Warm Audio fox example.
Hi there River! Thanks for watching and supporting the channel. There is no magic formula to getting good live vocals 😅 The end result is typically the result of the singer + the mic + the mixer + the speakers + the room. Some engineers have told me that the room contributes as much as 50% of what you are hearing, which explains why the same sound system can sound fantastic in one venue and horrible in another. Having said that there are certain 'magic boxes' that engineers use: one of the main ones is multiband compression, another is something that the BBE sonic maximiser, which adds additional harmonics to the vocal, and a final one would be a tube preamp (analog) or tube plugin (digital), which do the same basic thing. Hope that helps 😊
@ Thanks for the comments! I understand the room and ambient noise around the room can contribute to overall quality and mix. Add to that a good compression unit. Makes sense! Also, I noticed you did not mention equalizer/multiband EQ. So chain would be - mic > mixer > preamp > compressor > maximizer? I know there’s a whole debate about compress pre or post EQ..?
You're welcome 🙂 EQ is something of a double-edged sword: I find that people either tend to overuse it or be afraid of it. EQ cannot fix room acoustics, badly chosen and/or placed mics or poorly installed loudspeakers, and it is very important to listen with no EQ first before applying any. Signal chain could also be mic -> outboard preamp -> mixer line input. Compressor and maximiser can be inserted before or after the EQ, whichever sounds best.
Hi, i am interested in this mixer, i would like to use this for my custom home studio. Could you do a tutorial on how to record to a DAW in stereo, for example singing into a condenser mic while playing music, and recording both or each separately, if at all possible?
sir good day, i have mg16xu.. i hope a thorough discussion on how to connect 1 power amplifier (px10) for passive loudspeakers, and 2 active loudspeakers into a 1 mixer (MG16XU)..have a nice day
Excellent video. For my karaoke setup, I am trying to address the need to take the output from the mixer and feed that into DSLR camera. As you suggest, I will use Group 1-2 for the microphone and music channel, set ST on these and take the 1/4inch output from Group 1-2 into DSLR camera; I will turn off ST on the GROUP 1-2 fader and use that for the volume going out to y DSL camera - just trying to confirm, is the right approach? How should I connect my mixer to the home theatre system such that the output from mixer goes into the home theatre system? If you can please help answer this.
Yes that will work fine, except you will need a device to convert the line level output of the mixer into a mic level signal suitable to be fed to the input of the DSLR. For connecting to your home theatre system, these typically use RCA/phono connectors, so you will need some adapters or cables to convert the 1/4" output of the mixer.
@@GLBProductions Thank you for taking the time to respond. When you mention about a device, are you suggesting a cable, two TRS 1/4 inch cables going to one 1/8th inch TRS to feed into DSLR (this is what I have) or some other device? Similarly, I took two 1/4 inch TS cables going out from Mixer main out into two RCA into home theater receiver (this is what I have) or some other device?
No it would be something like a recorder or audio adapter like the Beachtek DXA-HDV. The solution that you have now is not ideal as the output level of the mixer is not correctly matched to the input level of the camera which can cause distortion. When connecting to your home theatre receiver simple adapter cables are fine because the output and input levels are already matched.
@@GLBProductions thank you very much. The product is not available anymore. Would JBL M-Patch ACTIVE-1 work ( I have one of these)? Group 1-2 output from mixer to JBL M-Patch ACTIVE-1 SOURCE 'B', then JBL M-Patch ACTIVE-1 OUTPUTS 'B' going into DSLR - will this be better or the right way?
In theory no because the JBL unit does not have a microphone level output which is what the camera input requires. If your current setup is working fine with no distortion or other problems just keep on using it :)
I love ur vedios sir very helpful specially for the beginner like me,,, i used mg10xu at present may i ask if compression knob & HPF button can help in eliminating mic feedback even the eq knob all position at center, w/o affecting the desire volume output?? God blessed you sir...
Yes in certain situations: the compression knob can help prevent feedback that happens due to sudden loud signals eg when somebody shouts or screams into the mic. The HPF can help prevent low frequency feedback in the region below 100Hz. However this will not prevent all forms of feedback.
@@GLBProductions , I have the MG10XU and it does not have a PFL button. No faders too but volume knobs instead. My question is, how do I properly set the gain? Thanks.
Sorry I still don't understand 😅 Putting signal through the mixer will not damage it, don't worry - that's what its designed to do. It can handle multiple inputs and outputs all at the same time.
So, Is it possible to play the playback coming from Ableton by USB, and at the same time during the same session, record on Ableton the master track of the mixer?
No it does not Ivan - if you want old-school analog insert points you either have to get the previous C generation of this mixer or go up one tier to the MGP series.
Bruno, thank you so much for your tutorials on the Yamaha MG-XU series. I have a 20, a 12 and small 6. I’ve learned so much more form you than I could glean from the User Manuals. I use the MG12XU mostly in my rehearsal studio and for small gigs. The use of the Aux2 control for the Fx has confused my to no end. Is there a way to manage the output volume to Aux2 monitors output without increasing/decreasing the Fx intensity for any particular channel?
Thanks for watching Russ. The answer to your question is... not really 😄 This mixer is designed to manage one monitor mix and one FX send - if you need a second monitor mix you CAN use aux 2 but then it should not be used as an FX send. Even that is less than optimal given that Aux 2 is fixed post-fader and has no master level control.
Bruno, thank you kindly for your reply. Clearly this is a limit on this smaller mixer. As an aside, I am committed to analog for live gigs. I’ve used digital mixers/software but have found that for quick adjustments in live settings the digital software is not intuitive and can quickly get your entire mix in trouble if you adjust the wrong setting deep in some sub-menu. The visual signal path of the analog mixers, such as the MG series, make for “safer” adjustments on the fly. All this to let you know how valuable your tutorials on these mixers are to your subscribers. I’ve learned magnitudes more from you than from any other tutorial I’ve found or from the manuals. Thank you again. Russ
You're welcome Russ. Yes, the advantage of analog mixers is immediate access to parameters and controls and this is unlikely to be equaled by digital mixers any time soon. If you tend to mix the same band and/or venue and do not have complex processing and routing needs then an analog board is often an ideal solution. The right tool for the job. All the best with your music!
I bought a karaoke machine. The instruction asks to plug Line Out from karaoke machine into a AMPLIFIER, then from amplifier out to speakers. Can the Yamaha MG12XU console take the place of the amplifier?
@@GLBProductions Many mixer hookup videos instruct to plug the two STEREO OUT plugs (upper right hand corner) into speakers. What would be the difference between that (plugging directly into speakers), and plugging into an amplifier then to the same speaker?
It's important to distinguish between active speakers with a built-in amplifier and passive speakers which need a separate external amplifier. The mixer can be connected directly to active, but not to passive speakers.
Sir, can you make a video for mg16xu. I have an issue on effects session. I bought it recently, when I tried to put some effect to my mic wouldn't work. I don't know why, I tried all possibilities but still it's not working.
Hello i have a question regarding bossting the audio sound . Can i connect the ledt and right outputs from the mixer into one single top power speaker that has 2 channels and so connecting the left and right outputs into the speakers would that make the sound more powerful
Doing so will not actually make the sound more powerful because the active speaker will simply combine the two signals together at the same level. You might get a slight level increase of around 3dB but if you need more power the best solution is to invest in a more powerful loudspeaker.
It sets the aux send to be pre-fader - if your faders were way below unity when you pressed it there would have been a big increase in the level of your monitors which might have set off feedback.
It really depends on whether you are using the groups or not - there is no 'normal' position for these switches. Watch the video again from ruclips.net/video/J_yOvdlMUAg/видео.html, I explain all the possible combinations.
On that mixer you use the peak light next to the level knob: set the gain such that the light comes on at the very loudest input level for that channel but does not stay on.
In a live situation, can we use both dynamic and condenser microphones with 48v phantom power on in the same mixing console??? Or will it damage the dynamic microphone???
Great video. I've bought one of these mixer to use for a dual-pc stream. I've yet to set it up but I was wondering if you could clarify something for me... If I have 1 mic setup through channel one and it's going out through Aux 1 to PC 1 & Aux 2 to PC 2, if I use FX will it be on both inputs at the same time or is it isolated only to Aux 2? Lastly, if I just wanted to speak to one audience (aux) at a time without the other hearing me, am I able to mute that Aux output without interfering with the other? I'm very new to this, so this setup might not even work or make any sense. Some guidance would be appreciated. Thanks again!
Interesting question, not one I've gotten before! In this case, if you use the FX they will only ever go to Aux 1 - the internal FX cannot be sent to aux 2 when it is used as an external send because that would create a feedback loop. In your situation, may I suggest a simpler solution: use the L&R outputs to split your signal: connect PC1 to the left main output and PC2 to the right. If you want the signal to go to both PCs, pan the mic channel center. If you want it to go to PC1 only, pan hard left, and vice versa for PC2. This will give you full functionality of the effects for both destinations, and also keep both of them post-fader and post-mute. If you want to kill the feed to both PCs without disturbing the level, just switch the channel OFF.
By the way when I connect my Shure Wireless Mic do I need to press the Pad Button on Yamaha mixer ? Cause if I don’t do then I experienced very loud even if my fader were almost down. Pls suggest . Thank you

Yes it can and does, but the mixer is not designed for aux 2 to be simultaneously a monitor send and an FX send: you're meant to use it either as a send to the internal FX or as a post-fade aux send, not both at the same time.
Can you please help about how to connect mobile/Landline to attend callers during Live(online/offline) sessions?
Thank you for the video, you're a life saver!
You're welcome Billy!
Hello and Thank you for this tutorial.
My question is On the mg10xu, where do I plug in my in ear monitor? (Cable)
You're welcome Robert - plug into the headphones output.
Thank you for taking time to make this video ! 🥇
You're welcome!
Thanks for this great video, but the thing we are not using a powered speaker and the output is in low volume, what should i do? Thank you
By the way my speaker is only the yamaha 400bt. Looking forward with your help! More power!
You cannot connect this mixer directly to a passive loudspeaker, you need to connect to an amplifier first 😄
@@GLBProductions thank you very much for your help! Can you specify what kind of amplifier is needed? Great thanks!
It depends on the loudspeakers - more info here: ruclips.net/video/l9L7uK7Xy0w/видео.html
Hi‼️ What does pfl means 🤔❓
Thanks
Pre-Fader Listen :)
I got the non usb variety, still a great mixer
I want to thank you for all your help. Really helps me completely. Once again. THANK YOU VERY MUCHO Señor!..
You're very welcome Mariano!
Been watching your videos on/off the last several years! Once in a while I’ll come back and still doing a great job on explanations and instructions! Very detailed and complete 👍
Question - for live gigs is there a n external effect that can be added to give the vocals that warm smooth and clean sound?
So chain would be -
mic > mixer > preamp > compressor > maximizer?
Thanks for the suggestion Peter :)
Thank you very much.I'm learning from you dear Sir.❤
You're most welcome Sudesh, very glad the video was helpful!
1:40 USB on back panel is only input, not output?
It is bi-directional, so both an input and an output.
sir good day, i have mg16xu.. i hope a thorough discussion on how to connect 1 power amplifier (px10) for passive loudspeakers, and 2 active loudspeakers into a 1 mixer (MG16XU)..have a nice day
The simplest way to do this would be to use the XLR outputs for one set of speakers and the 1/4" TRS outputs for the other.
Thank you very much.
You are a Super teacher.
I love your tutorial, super christal clear and helpful
You're very welcome, thanks for watching TS.
Tnx sir... Very well explained,,, 👌👌👌
@@GLBProductions , I have the MG10XU and it does not have a PFL button. No faders too but volume knobs instead.
My question is, how do I properly set the gain?
Thanks.
Super tutorial.
Which mixer would you prefer. This , or the mackie profx 12
I'd be happy mixing on either one. The Mackie has one more mic preamp than the Yamaha, so that might make a difference in my voice.
Hello this has helped me a lot ,but could you tell me if putting floor monitors via the desk harms the output or the desk itself please....Thank you
Please explain what you mean by 'putting floor monitors via the desk' :)
Thanks for getting bk ..our bass player uses my desk to put thro 3 monitors so they can hear my voice..but I'm sure it effects my output thank u
Sorry I still don't understand 😅 Putting signal through the mixer will not damage it, don't worry - that's what its designed to do. It can handle multiple inputs and outputs all at the same time.
@@GLBProductions thank u so much that's fine
Do you need to use a DI box for an acoustic guitar or can you just plug directly into a track ?
Channel, not track 😄 Yes, active acoustic guitars can be plugged straight into the line input, no DI box needed.
So, Is it possible to play the playback coming from Ableton by USB, and at the same time during the same session, record on Ableton the master track of the mixer?
Yes it is.
does this mixer has inserts for external devices like revert , compressor etc .etc. ???greetings
No it does not Ivan - if you want old-school analog insert points you either have to get the previous C generation of this mixer or go up one tier to the MGP series.
Sir can you explain me about differences between balanced and unbalanced signals
Please see my video on DI boxes: ruclips.net/video/2SBGSDKgKHo/видео.html
Thanks for the explaining, it's very through and detailed.
You're most welcome.
I bought a karaoke machine. The instruction asks to plug Line Out from karaoke machine into a AMPLIFIER, then from amplifier out to speakers. Can the Yamaha MG12XU console take the place of the amplifier?
No it cannot, you will still need a separate power amplifier.
@@GLBProductions Thank you so much!!
Thanks for your detailed explanation in every video..
You're welcome Dresterwell.
Best tutorial.
Can I assign different effects to every channels? How? Thanks.
Thanks Henry. No you cannot - only one effect at a time across the entire mixer.
I have a Yamaha MG10XUF so can I use your tutorial as it looks similar ?
Yes you can 😄
Sir, can you make a video for mg16xu.
I have an issue on effects session.
I bought it recently, when I tried to put some effect to my mic wouldn't work. I don't know why, I tried all possibilities but still it's not working.
In this case I suggest you take it back to the person who sold it to you and get them to sort out the problem.
@@GLBProductions ok, thanks sir.
Great channel and video, THANKS!
You're welcome :)
I'd like to know it will work with a Lexicon external reverb. Not just for 2 chanels - but as a Master Bus solution - for all chanels.
Yes it will but you will need to use AUX2 and hence will not have access to the internal effects engine.
Awesome job, thanks man....
Hey, What does that little Pre button do. I pressed it in, and all hell broke loose. Ughhh
It sets the aux send to be pre-fader - if your faders were way below unity when you pressed it there would have been a big increase in the level of your monitors which might have set off feedback.
@@GLBProductions Thank you, can you answer my most recent question today regarding ST button and 1-2 buttons.
Thank you so much for your time and knowledge!
My pleasure!
If we're not using groups, should the ST and 1-2 Button be depressed on?
Not necessary.
@@GLBProductions so what is the normal position for the ST and 1-2. On or Off.
It really depends on whether you are using the groups or not - there is no 'normal' position for these switches. Watch the video again from ruclips.net/video/J_yOvdlMUAg/видео.html, I explain all the possible combinations.
I'm not using groups at all, so how should the ST button and 1-2 button be set , on or off position. Please answer the question.
ST button down, 1-2 button up. All the best with your music!
I want to know how sub groups ang bus mix works.. Can you please do a tutorial on this??
These concepts are discussed from 16:42 in the video - what additional information would you like?
@@GLBProductions yes I would love to learn because I'm a beginner..
Hi, Bruno.
I have the Yamaha MG10XU and it does not have faders (it has volume knobs) and no PFL button.
How do I properly set the gain?
Thanks.
On that mixer you use the peak light next to the level knob: set the gain such that the light comes on at the very loudest input level for that channel but does not stay on.
Very clear instructions. Great video!
Thanks Anu :)
In a live situation, can we use both dynamic and condenser microphones with 48v phantom power on in the same mixing console??? Or will it damage the dynamic microphone???
You can use both - just remember not to plug and unplug the XLR connectors with the phantom power on!
Thank you
Yes, you can either engage the pad on the mixer channel or reduce the output level of the wireless receiver. Both will achieve the desired result.
Please do for MG12XUK also
Professional, as usual.
Thanks Petru.
