  • So I got the swaying ghost up and running! Measures at 13 feet tall. Looks good set up in the bushes. No light FX yet which will be "lightning" lights run off my lightning FX machine. The up lighting will definitely make it look better. But I wanted everyone to have a look a few days before Halloween. As I said in the video, I limited the amount of swaying since this is my first time using the prop and I'm not completely sure how much it can sway without possible breaking or falling down. It's not the weight since it probably weighs no more than 20 pounds. I'm more concerned with the height and the torque. I plan on working on it more for next year and expect it will have more movement. But even with it limited I'm still getting good movement. The best thing is it works just as I hoped - 1 motor providing the swaying plus moving both arms up and down.

As usual, a really solid effort, particularly for your first go at it. I can't imagine a 13-foot prop with sound and this motion going for less than $350 or $400 and I'd guess you spent 1/8th that much. At some point it would be cool to see an "exposed view" so we can understand how the motor is oriented / set up / connected with the arms to create that movement. Great job, Rick!

Thanks for the comment. I had planned on doing an exposed view and a final view but the weather didn't cooperate and I didn't get the prop set up until late afternoon on Halloween. Then I couldn't get my camera to video tape well enough with the "lightening FX" on. So I figure I'll do it all next year with constant light on - weather permitting.

I've been trying so hard this year, but the heavy rains and high winds have been killing me.
I won't be able to get the projections/hollusions up until Monday or Tuesday because of the rain.
Inflatables, lights and my newly rebuily Monster In a Box v2.0 are ready.

I'm with you. Just checked our forecast and show 70% of rain Tuesday through Thursday. So I'm going to have to wait until Wednesday afternoon to decide what, if anything else, goes out. Unfortunately I know for sure that some of the big props won't be coming out this year. Such as it is living in the Seattle area - rain, rain, and more rain.

A few months back I posted a "tutorial" video that shows how the prop is made. Let me know if that doesn't answer all your questions.

I think next year you should make the arms move a little more but hes still really cool overall

absolutely. I can easily make the PVC pipe longer so it has a longer throw. I wasn't sure how much it was going to move until I got it running. more movement is always a good thing

@@RickVerlinda yeah because he barely moves

I like the height. I wouldn't shorten him.

Have you considered using a cellphone charger to power the lights and audio? The output of a cellphone charger is perfect for powering battery powered lights

good idea - I hadn't thought of that. What I found was the sound definitely isn't loud enough to carry out so I'm going to change to another "boombox" (thrift store purchase) that I use for all the other props' sound. With the lights I'll look into the voltage and see if I can find a cellphone charger at the amps and volts. - great idea

What device do you use to have different sounds to each prop?

    • @RickVerlinda

I started by using cheap MP3 players but then switch to old cell phones since MP3 players are now expensive. I go out to thrift centers and have bought old "boom boxes" which are getting harder and harder to find. Very low tech. 3 devices on each prop need electrical power - 1. the motor 2. the boom box 3. the LCD strobe lights in the heads
