  • I wanted to post a video show the final mechanical set-up of this year's Spider prop. As I say in the video - the movement doesn't look perfect yet but once it's dark and with the sound FX, lighting, and smoke - it will look great. I also use a PicoBoo jr. for the movement of the center prop so they will move more realistic vs. just swaying side-to-side.
16 lines off one motor this year. Very well balanced - no heavy load on the motor. I haven't seen anyone else trying to get more than just 1 prop moving off 1 motor so I think this is good information for everyone to maybe try something like this.
It really is the same set-up as my graveyard - except this is pulling everything up vertically vs. pulling horizontal side-to-side.
Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

I just love all the movement you get from one wiper motor. Great job!

I own a shop in a downtown that hosts a scarecrow stroll. We normally go all out since we're a graphic design screen printing company. I got a exact fan with a dial to slow down the speed. We're thinking of making a giant spider with moving arms. Hopefully it works out =D thanks for the inspiration!

setting this system up for a single spider would be pretty simple I think. I'd hook lines to all the spider arms (8?) and run them up - spread out somehow above it. I tried small pullies before but the line got off the roller and got bound up. So that's why I just use small eye screws. The twine moves through the eye screws easily - no real friction. As the motor turns the arms would lift and move each arm individually. The largest spider I've found to buy is at 8 feet in diameter. I think you would have to make your own if you were trying to get one any bigger. Also remember you are going to need a speed controller for the motor or it will probably be moving to quickly. Good luck!
