Exactly! Dennis is an absolutely phenomenal musician, singer, and songwriter. But, as James Young said in an interview some years back, Dennis was "It's my way or the highway", and the rest of the band chose the highway.
In addition to the Highway comment, JY told Dan Rather just a few years back that he would not want to depend on him showing up and being there for a show. If people desire to see tribute bands, I applaud them. However, imitators do nothing for me. Don’t use the brand name for money reasons. True fans know the difference between tribute and original or the real thing. Sure, Dennis does well without his past cronies. Be kind to each other without dwelling on the past. We all have one, ask Shaw? 😮😁
How does a band throw out the founding member who made the band famous? Its HIS BAND ! I like the old stuff. Classic. Stood the test of time. I dont like the soft stuff, but the mix between everyone was what I liked. Babe is a chick song, but its a good chick song.

Tommy was always my favorite but Dennis had the creative energy. They fed off of each other that's what made them great. No one would like to see a reunion more than me.🤞
Tommy Shaw didn't leave Styx because of the song Mr. Roboto. He never had a problem with that song. He left because he hated the tour for the album Killroy Was Here. Dennis decided to change Styx from a rock band playing concerts to a Broadway-style rock opera group doing musical plays. He made Tommy play the role of Jonathan Chance during the shows, and Tommy hated it.
I saw that tour. It was quite confusing at first when the cops with big European police hats rushed out on stage with sirens and lights going crazy. We were all looking at each going wtf is this. Then they performed their little play about Rock n Roll. Lol. Put that aside, they were absolutely fantastic. Styx was one of my favorites back then.

Just saw Styx for the 25th+ time last Saturday night in Houston. They were GREAT. Styx was the second concert I ever saw. That concert was their Main Event Tour in 1978 @ Mn State Fair, A band called New England opened for them ( Dont Ever Want To Lose Ya) . The concert was supporting their epic Pieces Of Eight Album. Who would of ever thought they could repeat an album as GREAT as The Grand Illusion ? Personally though, nothing will ever top Equinox. I saw Styx's Paradise Theater Tour 3 times ( twice at the Met Sports Center in Bloomington, Mn and once at Reunion Arena in Dallas. I had left MN to go to college in Texas (JC) and then Louisiana to play baseball. I saw the Kilroy Was Here twice. Once in Shreveport at a medium size venue and then my JC baseball buddies and my D1 baseball buddies decided to meet up at the Cotton Bowl In Dallas on a hotter then hell day to watch Styx headline the Texas Jam. In case you had not heard according to Tommy Shaw & James JY Young and their manager Jim Cahil on the Styx episode of Behind The Music that was the show that broke up the band. I have no dog in the fight but what a crock of total shi T was their rendition of what happened on that HOT HOT day. Research the Texas Blue Laws and the (banning of alcohol at 12am on Sundays) to see what really happened along with the temperature that Saturday, # of stupid Budweiser beer muscle fights, and the restroom closures at the Cotton Bowl that day. Also the video used to depict the band being booed at the Texas Jam appears to be the same video used on the video for Heavy Metal Poisoning. Thousands did leave the Cotton Bowl that day but the majority that left, left before Styx ever took the stage. Those that stayed LOVED the show. Styx was the headliner that night, they deserved to be and they totally delivered. Getting back to last Saturday night Styx was great and the top 3 songs they delivered that the fans went crazy over were in order: 4. Renegade ( encore closer ), 3. The Best Of Times - every one was on their feet singing, 2. Mr Roboto ( encore opener), 1. Come Sail Away - last song before encores. 3 of the 4 are DDY led Styx songs that are now sung by Lawrence Gowan. Gowan IMO is the GREATEST showman I've ever seen. He's no DDY but he's got enough Freddie Mercury in his voice and unbelievable flair in his showmanship to make these Styx shows shine. Tommy's a GREAT #2. He was for Dennis and he is again for Lawrence. Lawrence was handed some GREAT GREAT material and that guy can pull it off. As for Kilroy.... At the time and still now today I disliked Side 1 of the album and loved album Side 2, but I LOVED the tour. Dennis found a way to play almost every great Styx song inside of a gripping concept (problems of too much technology & censorship). The tour was fantastic!
I went to see Styx at King's Dominion in 2000. The person that replaced Dennis was more like a fish, out of water, in the way he was fully David Lee Roth, jumping around on stage with a spinning keyboard. I don't know the name of the surrogate, but my wife and I walked out of that concert. I carry no torch for neither Tommy Shaw or Dennis DeYoung, but whatever happened, it surely divided fans.
But wouldn’t be the original lineup, Tommy came later and John is long gone. I know what you mean though, the core members. I’ve always liked Dennis and he got me into the keys as a kid, live Tommy as well. Would love for them to play together once again.
I can understand both sides of the argument. Sure Roboto and other DDY songs held and still hold high success. The same goes for many of Tommy's songs, many hold high success, till this day. The real problem in Styx was DDY has a psychological need to try and control and manipulate everyone in the bad, and every direction the band takes. I think Tommy is correct here, in that the beginning of DDY's demise as a band member, started when he fired the manager that took Styx to success. That became obvious, pretty rapidly. Considering this and a few other things, I'm now in agreement with the band. They have a unity, fellowship, and love for each other you never saw or experienced with DDY. I'm not sure DDY is capable of bringing that. They are joyfully happy, electric, productive and effective without Dennis DeYoung. Even JY says he respects Dennis, but has no desire to work with DDY, again, risking losing the unity and happiness they've experienced since DDY was fired.
They did great work together. I think they should get past the hurt, and forgive each other. No one is perfect. I like every song they did including that one. All three of them are Styx. The others are just band-mates but not Styx. This is my favorite band. They are still good but it is not the same.
I liked it when it came out but one of my friends asked me what the heck it meant and I was like I dunno. Now I think it’s a good poppy song. Long live Roboto 😅.
As a Fan of all the Styx players, I do not want to see them all again live. For one I don't have that kind of money, and that's what it would be all about for them. The Money. Maybe for Dennis it might mean a little more. I will save my money for the CD and DVD, if it ever happens. They could make more money if they could work together on new music, but that (sadly) would be even hardier to do.
When I hear Mr. Roboto I think of the Texxas Jam when Styx got booed off the Stage and Sammy Hagar, Ted Nugent and various other artists played a set of Zeppelin to avoid a riot.
It would be cool if they did that little tour-- Or even did a 'Union' type deal like Yes did. It seems irreconcilable, but hey-- The Eagles did it. Perry did it with Journey even tho he wouldn't tour. People change/grow/mellow,etc.. never say never (pun intended). T PS: I liked Cornerstone alot. Paradise T. grew on me later on. Kilroy...just wasn't as solid an album of songs..period.
Kilroy was better album than the albums before Paradise Theater. Paradise is number 1 and Kilroy number 2 album. 100 years from now is excellent album and also 10 on Broadway.
Dennis doesn't like to tour and the guys even asked him to come to do some shows when he's up to it like Chucky he plays when he can Dennis had the same offer and freaked so Styx went on with out him!
I always like this song. It was catchy and played constantly on the radio in 1983. The reason why styx is my favorite band is because they did a lot of different styles of music. Tommy, JY, and DDY and even within themselves were always doing something different. I love the fact that it wasn’t the same stuff over and over and over. I love Boston but they kind of sound the same. That’s not true of Styx
My understanding is that Dennis was fired bc he had health issues and the rest of the band wouldn’t wait for him and used the Roboto tour and too many ballads as an excuse.
I Tolerate Roboto, my favorite song on KWH is Heavy Metal Poisoning. JY SHREDS on that Song and I wish they'd do THAT one instead. But Tommy said they brought it back because of the fans. And we all KNOW they love to Please the fans. I'm a lifelong fan, I even have the first album signed by the original lineup and a 3 record set of a STYX interview done for Radio Stations only. I can't go see them this year and from what I've heard is many are complaining that STYX Should be HEADLINER every night because they're blowing Foreigner out of the house. 🤟🏻 JY, he makes my 💖🫠🤟🏻
Dennis is kind of like Sebastian Bach in a way....every time he talks about Styx, he basically reminds them why they don't want to work with him. Shame they can't put it all aside for the fans, but I can understand for sure. His solo band is honestly better than Styx, but without that name they don't get the venues.
I liked Roboto when it came out, bought the album, it had good sound to it musically, different then the usual giatar work on previous albums witch I loved, just a good album to change up things a little, still like the song and still like the rockers too at 64
I always thought "Kilroy was Here" was an awesome concept album. I liked "Mr. Roboto" and even the songs not written by DeYoung such as James Young's "Heavy Metal Poisoning". Now if Dennis DeYoung were anything like Gene Simmon's he would of had STYX market "Dr. Righteous Fried Chicken" for a quick buck ( or did he and I didn't know it?!?).
I’m not exactly sure what you mean. Dennis only wants the opportunity to perform with “his” band for at least one performance. Shaw is holding a grudge, and won’t let go. If you read what Shaw said, he won’t let go. If you read Dennis’ comments, he praises everyone. Whether or not you like Dennis, his response is straight to the point and truthful. If you can find anything negative toward Shaw ,in Dennis’ comments, please send them to me. Forgiveness and kindness are things I grew up on. I have values and morals, and treat others the way I desire to be treated.
Don't like Mr Roboto. I may be out of line saying this, but Tommy Shaw comes across as a very uptight person. Although i have the utmost respect for him as a musician, his voice is great to this day. It seems like a lot of singers with a high range lose it as they age.
@@TerryKrysinski Dennis still is a control freak. He uses these interviews and messages to try and push for a Styx reunion, which the rest of the band clearly does not want.
As Terry said, it's not about money. The guys just want to enjoy whatever time they have left touring. They know that wouldn't happen if DDY was allowed back in. I happen to be in agreement with the band here. Why put up with Dennis's drama and need for control? It's not worth the headaches...
@@someguy7993 ~ Exactly. Just by DeYoung responding to Tommy's interview, shows he hasn't learned his lesson. As you said, "Dennis is still a control freak". And his rant tells us so...

JY says He has No Desire to Work with DDY anymore... Dennis (according to JY) Made Touring Unpleasant .. Dennis was Like a King-Fish (informal Definition: a person regarded as an authority figure; an influential leader or boss)
@@seanmormelo01 If you think DDY has 'all the talent' then you are hugely misguided. He IS a huge talent no doubt. But he brought much unhappiness to the band with his tyrannical ways/attitude. They do NOT want that back. T
@@TerryKrysinski well whatever neither one of us were there. Pure talent wise it’s Dennis by a longshot. He wrote every one of the bands top 10 hits except for too much time in my hands written by Tommy Shaw.
@@seanmormelo01 its a Subjective Opinion .. I got to see them Live back in the 70s & 80s and they All contributed to being A++ Performers.. and All of The Studio Work as well ... John Panozzo 's Drumming was, in my opinion, a Very Huge part of their success
I'm just the opposite on "Mr. Roboto". I liked the tune back in '83. But hearing it today, I can't stand it. Too cheesy, even for Dennis. As for the band getting back together with DeYoung, you seem to forget about how DDY tried to sue the guys in federal court. They don't want him back, and to be honest, neither do I. Tommy has also stated that he wants to be happy at this point in his life/career. Constantly dealing with DeYoung's drama, and his wanting overall control won't change. Shaw also said that they already tried the reunion thing back in 1996. It didn't work then either. Dennis was my least favorite songwriter in the band. Between all the love songs to his wife {which usually bored me} and the goofy material such as "Music Time," DeYoung's tunes isn't what I go to when listening to of Styx's past Lps. That said, I do like some of DDY's songs in Styx. But his vocals have been deteriorating for the last decade, and I can no longer listen to his voice anymore...
Shaw took over the band when he wasn't even in the band until the SIXTH album. His songs were commercial bubblegum radio crap. Dennis was the real talent in the band. JY is a fool for taking Shaw's side......they refused to do Best of Times and Roboto after Dennis left and what are they doing now? Those two songs. Hypocrites. Styx had some albums that were bad ( Cornerstone and Edge of the Century), but with Dennis there is no Styx. Tommy's a hack, he wishes he could write great songs like DDY or JY can. The Styx feuding is almost as bad as KISS. They will never tour again with DDY, he claims to be retired anyway
Correct. Dennis is absolutely the monster talent of that band and it’s never been anywhere near the same without him. He wrote virtually all the great songs.
Riduculous, for a 76- year old guy to be even talking about this. And if its all for show ? well that's even more ridiculous. Tommy, Todd and Lawrence are the core of a great current band. They don't need bitter old men around them. Thats not entertaining. Stop enabling; these are adults.
In order to understand the deep Past, and by that I mean Past Lives--Styx, with DeYoung as vocalist (and Tommy!), is an indispensable tool. The unfortunate negative side to this musical journey back-in-time is that you may not like what you find, as DeYoung and company were actually villains, and I'll let your imaginations (and, most importantly, memories) fill in the blank regarding the types of crimes they commited. When one remembers one's front room filled with dirt coming from outside and long-dusty tree roots and vegation and so forth, one knows "STYX was Here" (along with Kilroy).
Nobody can really replace Dennis in that band. Gowan does a pretty good job on the keyboard parts but he cannot sing like him. It would be a hard task to fill in those vocal harmonies that Dennis had with them...like on "Suite Madame Blue" from the "Equinox" album. If you have seen the video for that tour you would know exactly what I am talking about.
i see that deborahtunes has the golden rule on her youtube page does this apply to dennis deyoung or are you just as much a hypocrite as your idol tommy.

All there best albums have Dennis involved
Saw the concert when it came out 1/2 of the show was mr rob
I never had hated Mr. Roboto. I don't love it, but you can skip it if you don't like it. No big deal about that song.
Roboto I think of the Texxas Jam when Styx got booed off the Stage and Sammy Hagar, Ted Nugent and various other artists played a set of Zeppelin to avoid a riot.
say it ain't joe.. i was there none this ever happened.
The strange thing is if you listen to Tommy Shaw's solo albums after Mr roboto, they're way more poppy than Mr roboto by far
Not Sure About your album ranking for styx but that's cool Thanks For Your Comment !
You are correct. That is exactly what happened.
Doesn't he have an allergy to the sun?
I Tolerate Roboto, my favorite song on KWH is Heavy Metal Poisoning. JY SHREDS on that Song and I wish they'd do THAT one instead. But Tommy said they brought it back because of the fans. And we all KNOW they love to Please the fans. I'm a lifelong fan, I even have the first album signed by the original lineup and a 3 record set of a STYX interview done for Radio Stations only. I can't go see them this year and from what I've heard is many are complaining that STYX Should be HEADLINER every night because they're blowing Foreigner out of the house. 🤟🏻 JY, he makes my 💖🫠🤟🏻
Do Tommy Shaw is the guitar genius in that band and even JY says that
Dennis is kind of like Sebastian Bach in a way....every time he talks about Styx, he basically reminds them why they don't want to work with him.
Shame they can't put it all aside for the fans, but I can understand for sure. His solo band is honestly better than Styx, but without that name they don't get the venues.
what tours have you seen in concert? Any? You dont seem like a die hard fan.
Liked roboto then and still do
Dennis DeYoung is a part of Styx. We miss him.
Lady will always be a favorite.
Mr Roboto was awful, was embarrassing.
I love Dennis and his comment to Shaw. Shaw is stupid.
You wouldn’t laugh at his bank account numbers.
@@kingtrance307 Anybody can make money. Dennis can make money, and Shaw can make money using the Styx brand.
@@SueKay-rq1lr- Then none of it matters anymore then. Water under the bridge…
@@SueKay-rq1lr - Honestly I don’t care about this pissing contest anymore between any of them. It just doesn’t matter anymore. Just enjoy the music.
Don't like Mr Roboto. I may be out of line saying this, but Tommy Shaw comes across as a very uptight person. Although i have the utmost respect for him as a musician, his voice is great to this day. It seems like a lot of singers with a high range lose it as they age.
Tommy Shaw has little man complex.
Why settle on county fair's , and state fair's making $50,000 , when you could reunite with Dennis, and Make $$ 1,000,000 Millions.
It's not about the $$ for these guys. It's about being happy as a band. That wasn' happening anymore with DDY because he was a control freak. T
2:55 stop!!! Did you say, "o-rrangement?"
I love styx music but Mr roboto I never cared too much for and still don't not running the group down they're one of my favorite bands ever but that wasn't one of my favorite songs from them
JY says He has No Desire to Work with DDY anymore... Dennis (according to JY) Made Touring Unpleasant .. Dennis was Like a King-Fish (informal Definition: a person regarded as an authority figure; an influential leader or boss)
Yes He Said That Absolutly But If Tommy Wants It Then Maybe ?? A Few Shows Thats It
That’s because he has all the talent and they know it and they are jealous. It’s that simple. The talent demands the respect.
Like any of it really matters anymore. Battle of the elderly rock stars… 😂😂😂😂
Hate it now hated then my favorite songs were always Tommy Shaw songs some of the ones Dennis did I had to cringe
as the same with mr perry the same coud be said for dennis ...not gonna happen
Me like yourself, took me back when it came out. I remember thinking WTF is this ? Last time I saw them was The Grand Illusion tour
I thought Mr Roboto was good at the time and prophetic in hindsight.
I Don’t like Dennis, go away! Mister Roboto song is my least favorite song! I love Tommy! 💜
Dorks 😅
Riduculous, for a 76- year old guy to be even talking about this. And if its all for show ? well that's even more ridiculous. Tommy, Todd and Lawrence are the core of a great current band. They don't need bitter old men around them. Thats not entertaining. Stop enabling; these are adults.
Tommy is the one who's bitter.
Tommy is the bitter old man.
I always loved 'Separate Ways'... crap. Wrong band.
Don’t care, never liked Styx.. do like Shaw/ Blades collaboration
Blah Blah Blah this guy wants to make money on the drama.
Get a life
Nobody can really replace Dennis in that band.
Yeah well, I HATE Mr. Roboto!!!
i see that deborahtunes has the golden rule on her youtube page does this apply to dennis deyoung or are you just as much a hypocrite as your idol tommy.
Not Sure I Understand Your Comment Please Explain
@@thestevechampagneradioshow7294 sorry the person using the deborahtunes name for ocmments is a deyoung troll. after reading deyoung's comments i would not call them fiery more like measured but slyly sarcastic
Some people want to make people happy with their music others want to be on top looking down.
I judge them if they have too much pride !
Personally I can stand most musicians
Even the ones I grew up with in my
Home town.
Dennis started focusing on himself to much not his talent.
I never liked the song when it came out, and only recently started liking it a bit due to the nostalgia and weirdness of the 80's. As a song, honestly it sucks.
