@@Meatball2022 it wasn't that simple. He had chronic fatigue syndrome. They were just looking for an excuse to keep him out of the band. When Tommy was having financial problems, Dennis put the band together back in 96. Tommy left the band back in the 80's and Dennis wouldn't replace but JY got on his case so they hired Glenn. Dennis was very sick and asked them to wait for a while. They could have brought him back when he felt better but Tommy wanted control of the band
Also, when Tommy was with the Damm Yankees, he make jokes about Babe. Dennis said to Tommy,"if you are trying to hurt me you have succeeded." So it is more than wearing a pair of glasses.

"It's my way or the highway"...a statement that has been attributed to Dennis thanks to VH-1s "Behind The Music", when in actuality it was Tommy and JY saying that to Dennis during the "Brave New World" recording & prospective upcoming tour while Dennis was suffering horribly from an illness. Yet, Dennis still loves those guys after all that has happened. A true class act. Wish I could say the same for TS and JY and the rift that has subsequently happened within the fanbase after they didn't return the loyalty Dennis showed to Tommy so Tommy could do his solo albums despite JYs protestations. They didn't even pay Dennis for a year and a half while touring as "Styx". No good deed goes unpunished it seems. As a Styx fan, I bet that home video where the guys reunite after many years to record Lady '95 is heart-wrenching to watch. This was an incredible interview, the best one of Dennis that I've seen so far. Thank you Pete and Dennis.

I love Dennis, and I love his pivotal contributions to Styx, as a founding member and songwriter. I love those classic albums with him. I'm happy that he has continued as a solo artist and is releasing good new music. I'm also happy that Styx are still touring and releasing quality new albums. I do miss Dennis in the band-- but I also like Lawrence Gowan. Life goes on, and I'm just enjoying the music! Tommy and James have made it clear that they are happy with Styx as it is, and even though I wish that they could mend fences with Dennis, I'm just a fan, and I never had to go through any of the things, professionally and personally, that all of them went through with each other! Who am I to try to tell them what to do, as a fan of all of them? That's my perspective. I love the music of all of these guys, and I'll keep buying the albums and going to see Dennis *and* today's Styx, live, as long as they are still making music and touring. I don't expect to ever see Dennis, Tommy, and James on the same stage again, except for at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, if Styx is ever inducted, as should have happened many, many years ago.

I agree with Dennis! We should not be taking sides on which is better, Styx (new band) or Dennis! It's ok to like one or the other naturally due to your taste but, it is not ok to decide arbitrarily to hate one or the other due to some weird sense of loyalty based on the breakup. That is just sad. I genuinely like both the new Styx albums and Dennis's new stuff! Both are good in my opinion. I will admit, however, that Dennis comes off much better in interviews than the other guys. I try not to take sides but they just seem disrespectful towards him in their interviews. I especially do not like the way Lawrence Gowen talks about Dennis. Seems he was not there when things went down so why does he have to voice a public opinion at all? I like his music but I wish he would shut up sometimes. Sad. I do love hearing Dennis speak so fondly of the other guys! He does not take all the credit. He praises their collaboration. I wish they could all do that instead of throwing shade.

That's a very entertaining interview if you can find it. Great to read that you enjoy music from both The Pistols and Foreigner, most would consider them complete opposites, but I think some of Foreigner's early work has more in common with the likes of punky harder rock than people think. The Jones' boys guitar tones are quite similar, at least to my untrained ear.

Thanks Pete for this great moment with Dennis deyoung. Funny and respectfull person. Hé said all i was thinkin about a lot of subject... I like both the band Styx now and the solo stuff of Dennis. Even if i like less a band with the new singer i can appreciate it like Van Halen with Hagar and Arnel with journey and so on...

Pete, I've heard a sh!tload of DDY interviews, including two or three I did with him on talk radio (2001-2005). Dennis is always entertaining, but he was in absolute top form in both of your interviews Well done, Pete. Thanks for pulling some Wooden Nickel stories out of him. Serpent is Rising, indeed!

They should make an episode based on Columbo where Lawrence is killed, and Styx brings back Dennis. Unfortunately, Columbo's number one suspect was Dennis where he harassed him throughout the tour. It turned out that Lawrence was killed by his spinning keyboard and tried to frame Dennis. Styx was so happy and asked Columbo to join them on tour as their new road manager.

I think I know how to solve this thing... you know who should get together for a conversation? DDY and Lawrence Gowan.
LG is honestly a virtuoso. The guy is a phenomenal player. But the times I met him he was super sweet and humble as well. And I LOVE his Styx songs... they tread a nice area between Billy Joel the Beatles and Queen...but he also is a bit of a cornball on stage (like Dennis)
in short, i think he and DDY would probably like each other and have a mutual respect.
Maybe LG is the guy who could convince TS & JY to soften their stance and bring DDY out for a final tour. And as long as LG is involved with it too, I don't see why he'd be opposed. It would be a bigger tour and a bigger payday for actually less work for him, and he could focus on singing more of his own songs, rather than ones he didn't write... seems like a win-win-win to me.

One thing you have to watch when he talks though it's a lot of tongue and cheek and a lot of quick ad libs he let's fly which are a whole lot of fun always a great interview with Denny hope you enjoyed it.

AWESOME Pete, and thank you Dennis De Young!!!! brings back So many great memories. being in Indiana all of my life Styx for all of these decades have always been regional monster of rock. lost count of how many times i've seen Styx from way back in the day to more current shed shows but the line without Dennis is just ok, the magic for me will always be with Dennis being the integral part he has always been to the formula. Styx without Dennis is worse than pizza without cheese! \m/ \m/

Do you think the Feud is the reason why they are not in the Hall of Fame??? Maybe because of this they are waiting til either all of the current styx or DD is dead then they do it???? How awkward would it be if they put them all on stage today??? I would love to see it. Dennis is s First Class person and I see him every time he comes to town over the many years alone. He puts on a better show than Tommy......And yes I have seen "Styx" with Tommy 3 times over the last 20 years. I just saw him in Tampa 2 weeks ago. So no need to throw hate at this comment. Let me know what you'll think?

Dennis is the true voice of Styx, and always will be. I've been to see the "new" Styx and was left underwhelmed, even though I did enjoy alot of TS's material. Did not like Gowan, just sounds like a cover band. That said, from now on, think I'll be keeping track of when DDY has his next concert in the Northeast, can't wait.😘
