Your guess is just that - a guess! Never have I heard anything from the band regarding resenting Dennis’s marriage. There has been plenty said about Dennis’s desire to be in control, even he acknowledges that. Unfortunately the band did not like his continual grab for control of all of their futures. DDY is a great talent and key to the success of Styx but he let his ego get in the way.
The problem with Styx really lies with JY, I know a lot of people don't want to hear that, but Styx or TW4 at the time was smooth running until JY joined them in 70. For the first few years it was manageable because for the most part because the rest of the bands didn't jump in on it. After Equinox ( I think) Curulewski, has finally had enough of the fighting and jetted, he's replaced by Shaw, who's a JY backer and the band starts to disintegrate. And before anyone give an argument on who wanted to do what and Barry Manilow etc. the tale of the tape is in the numbers who's songs were more popular, drew more money got more play etc. Styx was by no means a solo act with one great singer, I love JY and Tommy's stuff too, but Dennis was the MVP of Styx he as the number and the platinum to back it up. This is ironic, because my favorite Styx song is Man In The Wilderness, by JY.
Thank you for the correction. I think I may have gotten the leads of Man in the Wilderness and Ms. America mixed up in my head, another favorite of mine of the same album. Peace.
I was already corrected on that and thanked Rocky B for Correcting me weeks ago. If you want to participate in these grown up talks you need to keep up. that's a good fellow.
I've seen Styx at least a dozen times both with and without DDY. I've seen DDY and his band about 6 times in the past 3 years. We all get an opinion and a choice. I'll NEVER go see the group touring as Styx again. I prefer the vocals and pure performance from DDY and his current touring band - in my opinion what Dennis is now doing is phenomenal and very entertaining. No name calling. No finger pointing. No cries of who did what to whom. No calls for a reunion.
True and if the other guys did there damn job instead of complaining we could have gotten the perfect 'STYX' recordings yet! 'Dennis' wrote the ballads and 'Tommy' & 'JY' were suppose to ROCK!
We get it now! Dennis call you one time and treat you like a human being and since then, he is your god. It's ok! But you don't have to shit on Tommy shaw and the rest of the group...They are STYX too!
I don't believe Dennis DeYoung's been saying that he's an anti rock star. I saw him in 2017. And the way he has been putting all of the music together, it's still rock & roll to me.
Styx shifted and adjusted in the 80's and continue to make hits. Hell they had a hit in the 90s too with Show me the Way. DDY adjusted and it worked. Didn't make some people happy of course. I thought JY and TS didn't come across well in the recent interview with Dan Rather in talking about DDY but I think its just the way they are. LG was fine in the interview. He is in a tough spot. He has no beef with DDY in my opinion
I thought the same too.It made my respect meter for LG go up.Im sure he knows we were just kids when we heard these tunes and thats why were so much emotional the original lineup.
A couple of thoughts, it's gonna sound like I'm ripping DeYoung, but I'm really not, too explain, I've never been a fan of his voice, his voice is made more for Broadway, but having said that, it doesn't mean i don't like his tunes, from there inception to Pieces of Eight, he was The Prog guy, I am a big Progressive rock guy, "Suite Madame Blue" This Old Man", "Castle Walls", "Queen of Spades", "Come Sail Away" there classics that will always span the space of time, and he was the main force, how many hit singles did he have compared to Shaw, I think Tommy charted 5 top 40 hits, Dennis 11, and his direction sold the albums after PO8. Cornerstone, Paradise Theater, and Kilroy, he changed with the times, Tommy and JY didn't, how many hard rock bands were successful by 1984, you probably can count them on one hand, I'm on Dennis's side, he made them Rich....
Considering the events that have happened in the past, they have good reason to resent Dennis and his Yoko. Maybe Dennis has learned some lessons in the 20 years he has been out of the band, I don't know. Around Cornerstone, Dennis decided he WAS the band, and what the others wanted didn't matter, setting the stage for all the resentments and issues that followed. Ask Chuck how he feels about Yoko's attempt to cheat him out of Styx royalties. Just the fact that she has to be on stage with Dennis tells me all I need to know about her. I am not crazy about Gowan's voice. But Dennis is the one that caused them to have to replace him. They didn't do it lightly.
His Yoko...😁😂😂 But I agree. Suzanne probably controlled more than we know about back in the day. Just the fact that she sings backup in his band now says everything. But this guy is way off track here. Styx could care less what Dennis and his sidekick does anymore. They are enjoying their tours, and performing around the country. Dennis backstabbed both of the Panozzo brothers. And ironically, they are the reason DDY is where he is today, not the other way around...
Deyoung made Styx in the early days. His voice and the songs he wrote were the best ones they did hands down. Things change, styles etc. Thats all. Very simple.
It’s not that anybody is looking past the vacancy in the line up, it’s just the fact that it’s been 20 years now and Dennis is not coming back. It ain’t happening! The he said she said hardly matters at this point. Time to let it go Dave. Hopefully Dennis does release a new recording and everyone can enjoy it.
I'm not really a fan of the "new" Styx, but I can't help but notice the smart ass remarks that always come out of your mouth when you refer to Gowan. Of all the parties involved in Styx he is the least (if any) to blame for the bands break up. So I find your insulting remarks childish and boring. I was 13 when Babe came out in 79, and even then people were already aware that Tommy and JY were no fans of Dennis's wife. So your video is not really breaking news. Perhaps if you jumped in a time machine go back to 73 and stop Lady from coming out on Styx II, maybe you can alter Styx's timeline, and get Dennis back in the band. The extra benefit you get is that if you change Styx history, perhaps you won't have to be here explaining it to people who already know it a hundred times better than you anyway
Actually...Dave is right on for the most part...And Id like to think we are true STYX fans by making our comments and everyone is entitled to their own opinion.. And mine is....Dennis...Tommy and JY...were the nucleus of STYX....period! ...Because they all shined in their own way... Dennis with "Lady"...Tommy with "Fooling yourself"... and JY with "Miss America"...And then unfortunately things changed...But you cant discredit Dennis for what he was a part of because without him...and think about this...where would Tommy and JY be today? If Lady wouldnt have taken off two years later after its release STYX would have never been signed to A&M...They most likely wouldve went on to pursue other things...Tommy was playing in a band called MS funk with a friend of mine who now lives in Tennessee I met a few years back and MS funk took a dump and he went back to Montgomery Alabama....Ive heard Dennis was hard to work with and you know by his commentaries that hes used to ruling to roost...Yet thats what got STYX signed to A&M records!!...Holy crap Batman as Dave would say!... And after John Curlewski left the band because of power struggles with Dennis, Tommy came in and made the band so much more amazing! And yea I loved Curlewski's contributions to early STYX such as... "A day"..."You better ask" and of course the "Plexi glass toilet" song....And BTW...Supposedly he and the Panozzo brothers recorded the song without Dennis and JY and when they heard it they hated it...Yet it ended up on the album...Thats a question Id like to ask them about...He he he... So im not discrediting anyone!....Gowan can play keys but not even close to Dennis on vocals...period! ...And without that nucleus you might as well call the band STYK
"No, your're not the real deal when it comes to songwriting, playing." Are you kidding me? Do you have any clue of the ignorance of that statement? Dennis is not "Styx." Was he an integral part? Yes. No more, no less. The band Chicago became known for their "Babe" songs and destroyed their credibility. The rest of the guys had the right idea to go against what Dennis wanted to do. It went too far off the rails. Listen to the first five Chicago records and then go and listen to Chicago 17. Your delusion of your illusion of Dennis and his band is laughable.
"Angie" didn't ruin The Rolling Stones and "Beth" didn't ruin Kiss. What's everyone's issue with "Babe"? People tend to forget other Dennis songs such as "Born For Adventure", "Pieces of Eight", "Father O.S.A.", "Castle Walls"....etc, etc, Dennis didn't ONLY write love songs.
DDY is the factor that made STYX different. Maybe his development over time didn't appeal to some people but without him they are and were merely a pretty good band. Or so history is demonstrating summer after summer. The only success they've had without him is as a touring (or tribute) band.
I saw the "new" Styx soon after they reformed and were doing small venue gigs. They sounded great and put on a great show. I'm sure if I saw a DDY Styx show I would enjoy that too.
Or it could be the obvious and Dennis's ego and theatrics get in the way of the bottom line like has been said for 25 years and the other members want there paycheck without the ego
It is obvious to anyone who wants to be honest. I don't blame them one bit for getting rid of him. Instead of being able to tour and make music, they would still be stuck waiting for him to decide what three days out of each year he was willing to play dates. Do I wish he was still in the band? Of course, but he made his choices years ago.
Hi. I remember hearing an interview with J.Y. and remembered him mentioning how OVERcontrolling Dennis was. Don't get me wrong I love Dennis and especially his incredible voice. But for example Dennis wanted some acting prior to some of his songs and the band did not. The rest of the band would agree with certain things and he would shoot them down. It's just (at least as I see it) like a marriage where they drifted apart to the point where they were complete opposites. As J.Y. put it in the interview, "[Dennis said basically] It was my way or the highway and we chose the highway." No ill will intended towards either side but that's just how I remember it.
Everyone is missing a VERY GOOD POINT in all this Styx mish-mash and here it is, spelled out for you all to try to understand... TOMMY SHAW (who I love but have issues with regarding his views on Styx) did NOT WANT TO DO ANYMORE CONCEPT ALBUMS. Behold! "The Mission" is a CONCEPT ALBUM which was brainstormed by......(drum roll).....TOMMY SHAW! DUH! Hypocrite much?
@@crusheverything4449 ~ Exactly... It wasn't specifically "concept" Lp's the guys didn't like doing, it was stupid ones, such as *Kilroy...* which was hated. Styx had 3 other concept albums before the 1983 release, and the guys didn't have a problem with those...
Exactly , look at how he crapped all over the Kilroy album and Mr Roboto and now with the 35th anniversary of Kilroy and now Styx are playing Mr Roboto live Tommy and JY are both hypocrites
I do not really agree with you on this... but...and actually Denis doesn’t either.. he has said he felt he and tommy could not be replaced as main writers of Styx... so
I agree with you totally, except I DO NOT want Dennis to return to those ass-wipes!!! Dennis' love and faithfulness to the lovely Suzanne is inspiring!!!!!
Mark Payne they are both codependent; not healthy. Dennis was committed in 1974 and Suzanne didn’t want the Panozzo brothers to have any money. Of course they resent her. She’s a first class bitch!
I love your lollipop guild digs. Tommy and JY need to pull their heads out of their a-holes and just come to terms with the concept that ballads and rockers can coexist. And people like those ballads and people like the quirky roboto stuff, and they love the rockers too. Great vids my man, keep it up.
Great video Dave. Have seen Dennis with his current band twice now. He has come to our little city of 28,000 twice, and we are sure hoping he will come back again. He is absolutely fantastic, as is his band. He is funny and gives such a great show. Suzanne is in the band with him and she is gorgeous and funny. Sure hope he will come back with his whole show again.
Jackie Hall So DDY is happy playing with his band. TS and JY are happy with their band. What's the big problem? August is not Tommy and Lawrence is not Dennis but both are excellent musicians and fill their roles rather well. ☺
I don't believe I said there was a problem. And I don't believe I compared anyone to each other. Just said how much I enjoyed Dennis and his new band. If they're all happy that's great. Everyone is free to like and see whomever they want. And I just don't care to see TS and JY. If they are happy doing what they love, then good for them.
Jackie Hall I wasn't trying to put words in your mouth here. Just agreeing with you about Dennis being happy in doing his own thing, that's all. Just like you don't care to see Styx I, I don't care to see Dennis' band. I simply want Dave to know everyone is happy. So hopefully, he can get over this subject matter. There are so many other bands to discuss. Since you've seen Dennis, you just testified that he is happy. I recently saw Styx and can testify that Tommy and James are happy . So Dave should just accept the "divorce" and let it go. ☺
This the 3rd time I’m commenting on your channel (assuming this is the same guy) I still can’t get over how Styx and Pink Floyd mirror each other in thier conflicts with Dennis being like Roger and Tommy being like David in a way...what are your thoughts on that?
Dave, I meet Tommy and the entire Styx band on June 1, 2018 in Concord, CA. Tommy and the band were nothing but gracious and polite in meeting the fans. I have even spoken to Frank Hannon several times (the lead guitarist of Tesla) who says that Tommy is a great guy and he even wants to re-record a version of "Fooling Yourself" with Tommy. So, if you haven't personally met Tommy and talked to him, please keep your opinions to yourself!
If you're "too busy" for us, why are you seeking to do this as a job ? A normal work week is 40 hours. The fact that you ignore us on you tube isn't helping your patreon support increase. Think about it. ☺
Sherry B he wasn't saying he was too busy for us. He was just letting people know that if he didn't get back to them, he apologized ; that he had been busy. However..... It bothers me also that he doesn't read the comments generated from this site.
had 20ith row floor seats for paradise theater tour the sound was incredible . two year's Mr Roboto came out , I wouldn't ever see Styx again ever after that .
The bottom line is that Dennis doesn't want to tour like the other members of Styx. Yes, they also don't get along with him personality wise, either. But you cannot make money or be an artistically viable act these days unless you are doing what Styx is doing these days, which is playing 130 shows per year. DENNIS DOES NOT WANT TO DO THAT! People don't sell CD's anymore - in part because of piracy and the stubborn attitude of nostalgic classic fans and radio stations who refuse to honestly listen to new music from classic rock acts. "The Mission" was a GREAT Styx album, and I cannot wait for the new one. All the other stuff that you hear is B.S. It just comes down to touring with Styx. It has nothing to do with Dennis' bitchy wife. Styx has to be road dogs to be a viable act. Playing "Mr. Roboto" in a 2,000 seat theater for 30 shows per year ain't going to cut it.
So you're a Styx purist... we get it. Should we start discussing John Curulewski just so we can have another reason to bash Tommy Shaw? Man, I love your stand for Styx... but why are you so adamant about staying in 1983? By the way... tell me that ANY Dennis DeYoung solo album is as good as Styx at its prime! It doesn't exist. Did he write great songs by himself? Yep! Did he ever manage something as great as Castle Walls or Queen Of Spades without the input of Tommy and JY? Nope! Next topic... Ozzy vs. Dio... Supertramp after Hodgson... Phil Collins vs. Peter Gabriel. God... it gets boring, doesn't it?
Dave the Shaded allegedly "All Right" Pointer: I don't do Facebook and Twitter due to my beliefs about privacy, feminism etc. that are probably above your head; I just do Flickr and RUclips. I might consider contributing to you if you were kinder (if you didn't use degrading crap terms like "the lollipop guild," make fun of someone's slight speech disability etc), more accurate about facts and if I hadn't been victimized by expensive scams. The song you called "The First Time" was just titled "First Time." This revenge minded "I'm gonna be your worst nightmare" attitude is only sinking to the level you decry in others. Don't be a hypocrite. Two wrongs don't make a right. It's not like JY and Tommy are threatening you.
You really need to get past your hatred for the how Styx has progressed forward after Dennis DeYoung. They don't get along...period. They don't like each other...period. Why should they accept Dennis back in the band if they clearly don't like to be around each other??
The band that is Styx is Styx. They carry the rights to the name Styx, period. Unfortunately, Dennis does not. This whole thing can be hashed over and over and over again much like the Journey thing and nothing will change. We really shouldn't listen to Foreigner either since Lou Gramm isn't in the band anymore. Nor should we have ever listened to Genesis after Peter Gabriel left. And let's not forget about Yes and Kansas with new lead singers. What does one do? And let's not forget that James Young brought 'Best Thing' to the table when he joined the band which garnered them a record deal even if Dennis helped him with lyrics. And to say that James Young and Tommy Shaw aren't great at their respective instruments which you did on this video is really pretty shocking. I get it, you dislike the current version of Styx.
Notice Dave said about Glenn Shorrock and Beeb Birtles TOUGH NOOGIES! YOU'RE NO LONGER THE LITTLE RIVER BAND! The hypocrisy is only dwarfed by #AlwaysTrump
Terrence Reardon and Friends Podcast Podcast Dave said that the Styx band members resented Dennis and Suzannes' marriage. My point was, that JY has also been married, successfully and long term as well. Children weren't mentioned. Where did you get your info about JY drinking away his opportunity for fatherhood? I'd like to see that article or interview. Thank you. ☺
Sherry B - You’ll have to forgive Terrence; he has no life and spends his days trolling RUclips videos and lying about people who have never done a wrong thing to him. When you call him out for it, he melts down like an overgrown child and makes “threats” on your physical safety which are obviously idle and will never be acted upon, as he posts from the safety of mom’s house in suburban MA. Say one critical thing about Dennis DeYoung and prepare for a diatribe on how Roger Waters has been married twice, ruined Pink Floyd and can’t sing anymore (as if he ever could). Or maybe he’ll go off about Kiss or Genesis or Yes or any other band he likes. This guy is about as unhinged as it gets. I honestly wonder if he’s a paranoid schizophrenic and I don’t mean that as a joke or a knock. I knew someone with that horrible affliction and the similarities are remarkable.
Crush Everything I agree with you. He has attacked me a few times already for no good reason. I ignore him now. I forgive him and will pray for him as well.
DDY sucks compared to Lawrence Gowan. Lawrence is classically trained, has better vocals, and is the showman that DDY could never be!!! How dare you call Lawrence the lollipop guild. Styx would not be STYX without him. DDY IS NO genius!!! He is a sappy ballad so called singer. He ruined the original STYX with the sappy ballads then the whole Kilroy was here fiasco. No wonder Tommy left!!!
I love your videos Dave, you do a great job. You do a great job keeping peoples interest by speaking on somewhat controversial subjects. I do not agree with you regarding Styx. Tommy Shaw also sounds like Styx to me as well. I actually think of Tommy as more of a "rocker."
That's why Styx are performing Mr Roboto live now it's the 35th anniversary of Kilroy they thought it sucked back then but if it will make them some money what does it matter I think Tommy and JY are hypocrites
Your guess is just that - a guess! Never have I heard anything from the band regarding resenting Dennis’s marriage. There has been plenty said about Dennis’s desire to be in control, even he acknowledges that. Unfortunately the band did not like his continual grab for control of all of their futures. Man In The Wilderness is a great song, but it's a Tommy Shaw song
Thank you for the correction. I think I may have gotten the leads of Man in the Wilderness and Ms. America mixed up in my head, another favorite of mine of the same album. Peace.
Man in the wilderness is by 'Tommy Shaw' go back to sleep!!!
I was already corrected on that and thanked Rocky B for Correcting me weeks ago. If you want to participate in these grown up talks you need to keep up. that's a good fellow.
You really have a creepy obsession with Dennis DeYoung...should get yourself checked out
Yeah this guy needs a new hobby
Andrew Ganz you guys complain the same damn thing about Steve Perry😒
I've seen Styx at least a dozen times both with and without DDY. I've seen DDY and his band about 6 times in the past 3 years. We all get an opinion and a choice. It's as simple as this. It stopped being Styx when Dennis left the band.
True and if the other guys did there damn job instead of complaining we could have gotten the perfect 'STYX' recordings yet! 'Dennis' wrote the ballads and 'Tommy' & 'JY' were suppose to ROCK!
The Last Word - Based on the last nineteen years, the band Styx begs to differ.
He was kicked out and rightly so
Without Dennis De Young they're not Styx. They're a cover band that plays their music.
True
Everyone is entitled to their opinion so if you like the new Styx, fine. But Styx will never be Styx without Dennis.
You should call this "The Dennis DeYoung channel".
We get it now! Dennis call you one time and treat you like a human being and since then, he is your god. It's ok! But you don't have to shit on Tommy shaw and the rest of the group...They are STYX too!

Dennis formed the band period!!! It was his band before Tommy babyface. I saw them in HIGH School in 1977.
Styx shifted and adjusted in the 80's and continue to make hits. Hell they had a hit in the 90s too with Show me the Way. DDY adjusted and it worked. Didn't make some people happy of course. You don't have any more of a clue than the music observer.

Much prefer the Dennis DeYoung STYX.
Phil Maestro - Tommy didn’t want to do any more SHITTY concept albums. Fixed it for ya.
Jackie Hall
So DDY is happy playing with his band.
Again STYX ended in 1984, enough said.
Content starts at 2:25.
What argument ? Dennis DeYoung was , is , and always will be styx. Class dismissed !.
I agree
Remember this tribute band has zero gold records as we speak! Says a lot my Originals.
Dennis didn't want to tour. He still doesn't. The show must go on. Dennis wants to do theater garbage.
todd sucherman is the better drummer of the two bands, by far
The only valid reason for them to resent Mrs. DeYoung is if Dennis tried to get her onstage somehow. Which would be a total douche move.
You have the best personality of any you tube channels. And you are very knowledgeable
This guy is so far DDY's ass that it's unbelievable. DDY was a Prima Donna. Resent his marriage? You have GOT to be kidding!
Amy Smith - Oh, he reads them. Are you kidding me? He’s much too needy and narcissistic not to.
Thank you for the great news
well that is great news!!! about others loving your thoughts
had 20ith row floor seats for paradise theater tour the sound was incredible . two year's Mr Roboto came out , I wouldn't ever see Styx again ever after that .
Tommy Shaw is the Ultimate Rock Star. ABSOLUTELY Blessed.
Well said thankyou!!!!!
Linda Hammitt: You're welcome, and thank you!
Bob Davis thanks Bob!
Women can make a band or break a band..
You really need to get past your hatred for the how Styx has progressed forward after Dennis DeYoung. They don't get along...period. They don't like each other...period. Why should they accept Dennis back in the band if they clearly don't like to be around each other??
Man, this music observer guy just makes shit up all the time. It's like a RUclips version of the National Enquirer.
JY has been married for 48 years. DDY isn't the only one with a successful marriage.
The Sounds of Styx is the tribute band Dave, not Styx.
Terrence Reardon and Friends Podcast Podcast
Dave said that the Styx band members resented Dennis and Suzannes' marriage.
Dennis deyoung is an Awsome person the hell with tommy shaw
ME TOO!!
Yeah, Crystal Ball, Fooling Yourself, Sing For The Day, Lights and Haven't We Been Here Before? Were Rockers!
So get the fuck to it!
False.
Nope
It's as simple this...Dennis songs are just sappy. Not to mention Mr. Roboto crap he came up with.
That's why Styx are performing Mr Roboto live now it's the 35th anniversary of Kilroy they thought it sucked back then but if it will make them some money what does it matter I think Tommy and JY are hypocrites
@@sdime9858 I agree
